As City await knee scans on Sergio Aguero , Samir Nasri is the main protagonist as his side continue their penchant for 3-2 thrillers by coming back to see off Southampton. Carlos Tevez and Rickie Lambert both open their Premier League accounts for the season, while Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic help steer Chelsea to a comfortable win at the DW in Sunday’s early game:

Samir Nasri
While David Silva fluffed his lines by missing a spot-kick and crashing a close-range effort off the bar, Nasri served a reminder of his potential in the City midfield with a solid showing. Last weekend, he was handed a role in “the hole” in the 3-4-1-2 system and produced a goal and assist against Chelsea – despite moving out wide as City shifted back to 4-4-2, the Frenchman replicated last week’s returns to steer his side to victory and deny Southampton a famous win. At 8.5 in FPL compared to Silva’s 10.0, Nasri looks a more than decent alternative right now, with the Spaniard seemingly slightly off the pace after a lack of pre-season matches.

Carlos Tevez
The Tevez v Aguero debate raged for days on the site after the former’s strong display in last weekend’s Community Shield and he continued his pre-season form with the opener in yesterday’s 3-2 thriller. The case for his inclusion in our Fantasy teams could well be considerably strengthened, depending on Aguero’s upcoming knee scan – Tevez may also be set to move up the spot-kick pecking order after Silva’s dire miss yesterday and could well be first-choice if Aguero and Mario Balotelli are not on the pitch; that 9.0 price tag is looking more enticing by the day.

Rickie Lambert
A goal on his Premier League debut just minutes after climbing off the bench capped a fairy-tale beginning for the Southampton striker but his omission from the first XI could well be a worry for Fantasy suitors. Nigel Adkins preferred the more dynamic Jay Rodriguez as the lone striker – a tactic he may well choose to deploy in certain away matches, with Lambert’s eye for goal perhaps saved for the final half hour or so. With a home clash against Wigan to follow next week, we should get more of an idea as to how the Saints will line up at St Mary’s – Adkins had consistently rolled out a 4-3-2-1 system in pre-season but could revert to 4-4-2 in front of his own supporters.

Eden Hazard
His Fantasy ownership had taken a dip prior to the season kick-off after a less than inspiring domestic debut in last weekend’s Community Shield but, with Wednesday’s game against Reading still to follow, the Belgian has his nose in front of Frank Lampard in the scoring order after accruing a pair of assists at Wigan. The summer signing was a shade more popular than Juan Mata in FPL heading into the double Gameweek, with 12.9% to 12.8% ownership reflecting our dilemma but, while Mata toiled in “the hole”, Hazard’s fleet-footed ball skills tore the Latics defence apart and helped him to a nine point pre-bonus return. While Lampard’s spot-kick duties delivered yet again, the Belgian looked in the mood early on and, having been subbed off on 64 minutes, should be fit to start on Wednesday once more.

Branislav Ivanovic
The Serbian was the fourth most popular Chelsea defender in FPL (5.8% ownership) heading into the Gameweek, with Ashley Cole snapped up by over 23% in comparison but he stole the show with a strong attacking display from right-back. A goal and clean sheet harvested a 12 point haul but Ivanovic looks a good bet for bonus today and with the Reading game still to come, could be set to kick off the season with a bumper score. Recent reports suggest Roberto Di Matteo is shopping around for another right-back but if the Stamford Bridge outfit fail to bring anyone else in, Ivanovic is making a strong case for our consideration over the campaign ahead.

Very good squad. Have you used your FT yet?

Difficult trying to bench any of your midfield but I guess you have Hangeland + Petric subbed at Old Trafford.

Good to go I would say.

Arsene Wenger sold Arsenal midfielder Alex Song to Barcelona after losing patience with him turning up late for training as well as deeming him as lazy and lacking defensive discipline. 😯

I can't see Wenger getting another year in charge if this season doesn't pay off. I expect the fans are pretty tired of him selling their best players each year, bringing in some French unknowns who fail to perform etc.

That said he balances the books well so the board may just be happy for top 5 or so, technically they're a very good club that probably won't get back to their glory days until they get a little more reckless with their spending - if you want the big bucks from the trophies you've got to spend the big bucks nowadays.

I wonder how Redknapp would get on in charge...

Is it Wenger or the board though? Never hear anyone from Arsenal board nowadays. Will they spend the £40m+ they got for RVP and Song. I keep hearing Sahin but he is nothing like Song. They need another defender and a ball winning mid, they could do a lot worse than S Taylor and Tiote from Newcastle (sorry Newcastle fans!)} who they would get for that kind of money.

Thing is they're competing with billionaires, perhaps the board have just come to accept they'd rather be profitable than truly competitive with the very top. Sad but would make good business sense.

Arsenal of 10 years ago had the formula to win - good goalie, two big solid centre-backs, a rock solid defensive mid surrounded by pacy wing-backs and skillful playmakers further up the pitch. It's that solid spine that seems to be the key to all the very best clubs.

I'd love to have the perfect week - I've done well but so far have at least a few letting the side down, Kolarov was a mistake - or more he deserves more gametime than he gets. Mariappa and Federici gambles based on double GW and Sigurdsson didn't really get into his game - hopefully he'll keep a spot over VDV.

It's great to show off a good score, that's why we play - to get the most we can. As long as people don't take it too seriously it's no biggie and it's more important to capitalise on a good week than rest on your laurels.

After a few years of working round the World too much to play properly I want to get back to a top 1k finish this year dammit! 😀

That's the team gamble I think - you either go like him and play a great main squad with weak bench or try for a solid all-round team... Can work either way depending on how safe your main players are - lately seems very few are 100% nailed on.

I don't know who "The Apache" is .. but I'd be tempted to ditch Lampard / Torres before GW2 and the other before GW3 (or save both transfers until GW3).

Don't get too pre-occupied by value, it doesn't win you any points. If you go Lampard --> Michu then you can take your pick in terms of strikers.

Wrong. He's not anything amazing yet but very attacking like Evra and only young. 4 mill for a player who was nearly brought to the Euros as a member of the Dutch squad and will likely be in the squad soon is not too shabby especially as a back up.

He was in their prelim squad just lost his place to that other lad United were after (can't get his name right now). Was considered the best defender in the Dutch league last season (think he may have even received a reward for it.) Big step up to the prem but he's not crap. What I can't get is why they let Fabio on loan if they were looking to give Evra a bit more time on the bench.

This is gonna be a nightmare having to chose between the 2. I really don't think RVP will have the same season, so it will be pretty right in my opinion. One week Rooney, one week RVP and vice versa. I'm going to stick to Rooney, unless of course RVP maintains last season's form (which I doubt I'm afraid)

Yes something like that. I'd rather have Rooney who's on penalty + cheaper. Use the extra £1M for other players

What are VDV owners doing? Keeping for GW2 in the hope that he plays or ditching? I've already used up my free to ditch Ramires>Michu and as a VDV/Torres/Aguero owner I am already in the mire....

Im in the same boat, and I will keep. The midweek fixture could have been the factor in his benching. Especially given the fact that Tott lost the game, he could be in line for a start.

I say same boat, I don't have Aguero .. so it's a slightly different boat. If anything, it's more reason to keep VDV.

Same boat here, Jelly. If Aguero is deffo injured then he'll have to go first. I'll be keeping VDV until AVB makes his plans clear.
Assuming he has any plans to make clear, that is.

Depends on your team. If Carrick plays in defence again he will have a decent chance of a goal.

Really confused about the signing of Buttner. Not that I don't like him or anything, he's alright and might be better than that as he learns but why let Fabio go QPR then sign a new player in his position? Fabio is actually more defensively able than Rafael and could be the perfect Evra replacement. Cannot understand it.

fabio need 1st team action to allow his growth as a player. staying in united for bench 90% of the time doesn't really help.
I think fergie is thinking more long term

He's not going to learn great defensive technique at QPR and I could see Evra getting a lot more bench time this season, PL + CL will be far too much for him. Fabio could be given a fair bit more time. Ah well.

What transfer do I do? (2 mil in bank)

    Aguero > Tevez
    Torres > rooney
    Mata > VDV/Bale

I wouldnt be too fussed with missing 1 game with city coverage (away to liv) ... but if Aguero is out for longer than I'd want Tevez in...

I also have 3 chelsea & 3 reading, so I need to take out a couple of those in order to field a full team on GW3

      - Aguero vs Tevez : Aguero will be fine, hang on one more GW if you're not bother about CIty coverage against L'Pool
      - Torres vs Rooney : 100% yes. I already had Rooney, but going for Petric or something like that, looking at ditching Torres, definitely
      - Mata vs Bale/VDV : I'd stick to Mata. You will want him back soonish I reckon

Just done Ageuro>Tevez myself, mostly to preserve the full 2.5m.

I have Torres+Rooney, so now have the option of sticking with Tevez, getting Aguero back, getting Aguero for Torres and doubling (have Lamps too for Chels coverage), or swapping Rooney for RVP! 🙂

Really would like Torres to score Wed night as a Utd/City/Chels front line just looks so right!

Had thought along those lines - Tevez, Rooney, Petric/Lambert etc. Did start with Hazard but swapped to Lamps last week lol which i'd left captaincy on him and not that clot Torres!
