Six wins and a draw in their last 10 in all competitions sum up Wigan’s springtime resurgence. This term, the Latics’ annual bid for top-flight survival has been twinned with a FA Cup run which has clinched a place in next month’s final against City and, as is the norm at this time of year, Roberto Martinez’s men present some late-season options for our 15-man squads:

Having turned our attentions to Arouna Kone in the middle of last month, we shine the spotlight on Shaun Maloney this time round. The Scot made his way onto Fantasy radars with a last-ditch free-kick equaliser at QPR in Gameweek 32 and followed that up with the opener in the FA Cup semi-final as Wigan made light work of Millwall. Indeed, over the last nine Gameweeks, the little Scot has found the net three times and also chipped in with four bonus points – compare that with two goals and two bonus points in the first 24 matches and Maloney’s upturn in performance is more than apparent.

Sitting third from bottom, Wigan are three points behind Villa but have a game in hand over the midlanders – luckily for the Latics, the upcoming schedule smiles favourably as they attempt to ease themselves out of the drop zone. Martinez’s side face three home fixtures (TOT, wba & SWA, AVL) in the final four weeks of the campaign, with a double Gameweek 36 also crucial to their chances of picking up the Fantasy points.

While the likes of City and Chelsea may well be plagued by double Gameweek rotation, thus placing question marks over the game time of premium priced midfield options such as Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and David Silva, Maloney looks far too essential to warm the bench if Martinez is to avoid relegation. Classified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) yet fielded on the left of the Latics’ front three, his out of position appeal, allied with guaranteed game time, makes him an enticing option – all the more so given his 5.1 price tag. While the 6.7 priced Kone is likely to earn significant investment up front, Maloney, with a mere 4% ownership, has the potential to mirror his team mate’s returns and, as Harry Redknapp will attest to, the dead-ball ability to devastate.

I know PB is the man for all the German news, but I recently discovered some news and would like to share:
Lewandowski has agreed a deal with Bayern. Bayern is bidding €25m for a summer move, but Dortmund is holding firm for the moment.
Dortmund said no to United last summer and no contact has been made for him, since then from United.
Also, last summer, City offered a Dzeko swap for Lewandowski but were rejected.
Schurrle move to Chelsea is expected to happen, only thing stopping it from happening is Leverkusen's struggle to find a replacement.

Oh, missed it then. Yeah it came from him. I was really shocked to see Lewandowski had so many offers and rejected them. As it appears, rightly so. But I think he should stay. He won't get as much playing time at Bayern as he gets in Dortmund.

I think BVB can become a big European powerhouse if they hold onto their players. Even though Gotze has left, they can still achieve greatness. Just like they proved yesterday, they were very superior to Madrid. I really like their playing style. Even though I am a United fan and would love to see Lewandowski at United, I think he is better off in Germany.

Not now, but in 2014, when his contract expires (if he doesn't move to Bayern) he is what can be considered as the best replacement for RVP

All from Raphael Honigstein, it would seem, and all true-ish.

Couple of points to add: The flurry of Lewandowski news is being pushed by his agent, who earns up to 10% of any transfer fee. Dortmund have today denied receiving a formal offer from Bayern. Lewandoski himself would like a move, but is happy to stay at Dortmund until his contract runs out in 2014 and then move free of charge. Bayern also favour this solution, or at least did until recently. But then the agent wouldn't get anything, would he?

      2) André Schürrle to Chelsea is as good as settled, but Leverkusen want to sign Kevin de Bruyne from Chelsea as part of the deal. This would make sense, not least because it would put de Bruyne near the Belgian border, but he firstly may be involved in relegation playoffs with Werder Bremen, and secondly might now also be a target for Borussia Dortmund. No movement for a while probably.

Cheers PB. I didn't realize you posted this earlier. All this is very interesting. I think BVB needs to hold on to their players and they can become a powerhouse like Barca was until last season. They have an amazing squad and their style of play is really impressive. When I saw them in the group stages, I fell in love at first sight.

Why do people really think RvP will be rested and rotated so much? It's not like he can't play a game a week. I'd see the point if they had other competitions to worry about, but they don't.

SAF wants to break the points record, and I can see RvP being an important part of those plans. Therefore, can we please scrap the RvP rotation worries?
    Thank you.

History has taught me not to believe a word Ferguson says. "We're going for a points record" could easily mean "I'm not going to risk my best player for meaningless games". I'm holding RVP for now though because everyone is in the same boat and there's a slim chance Fergie might be telling the truth, in which case I don't want my rivals having RVP when I don't.

Did Mancini sign Sinclair or was it a club decision to have homegrown players in the squad? Seems a strange one to freeze a player out like that. Almost irresponsible as you are interfering with a players development when he had a good season under him at Swansea. I suppose it's Sinclair's responsibility to find a club that suits him and ensures game time but his non existent season seems a bit extreme at City.

Yeah maybe although City are the team that wanted to sign him then not give him any games to prove himself in the team. Unless Mancini has seen enough in pre season and training to make his mind up about him.

Sinclair must have known what he was getting in for when Johnson went to Sunderland for gametime. Mancini probably brought him in to play a sub role to offer width late in games but he obviously does not rate him at all.

Even if Dzeko plays in both games, I doubt he'll play many after the DGW. Same for Ba. By putting them in your team you've burned through a future transfer.

Mancini was screaming at him during the Spurs game. I think he's one of the fall guys for a bad league season despite being their top scorer.

I've watched him play in person and I thought he was horrific. Slow, lethargic and had plenty of awful touches. He's a natural goal scorer though, but it's not enough to start regularly for City.

      it's why I;m buying Kolarov

At least you know what you are letting yourself in for and you have 4 other defenders to fill in, and let's be honest, he'll likely play the midweek game in GW37, so if you buy him for the DGW, you're only needing cover GW38 anyway

          Strength or bulk?

          Do reps like this;

          Twenty reps
          increase weight

          Ten reps
          Increase weight

          Six reps
          Increase weight

          3 reps
          Increase weight

          2 reps
          max weight

And then reverse the steps. All in one go.

When you get old you will go all flappy. 😀

Many reps low weight is the way to develope useful strength. But you dont need a gym for that.

Its what the guys at my school who took weights seriously adviced. Builds up peak power as well as building a solid base.

Thats all I know though as I tend to do press ups etc as I am not interested in pure strength.

2nd May – Chelsea v Basel (Ba cannot play)
5th May – Man Utd v Chelsea (Ba likely to play)

I'm surprised Bale is only 43% on the captain poll. West Ham have been impressive recently, Tevez seems risky to me.

I think both will do well, Bale is more explosive

      Old club factor?
      Spurs away?

      Just guesses.

For the record, Bale would be my pick of the two

Bale can tear any team apart, so I am not shocked. Don't have Bale, not getting him either (I don't like points 😉 ), so will probably go for Robin Reliant

I have Dawson so getting Vertonghen as well is a bit silly isn't it?

Whats everyones thoughts please for the dgw.......

    Jaask

    DAVIES rafael mertesacker

    MATA fellaini BALE MICHU

    berba rvp remy

Looking to do the following for the DGW (-8):

    rafael > vertonghen
    rvp > tevez
    remy > defoe

Is it worth taking an extra hit and bringing in another midfielder for fellaini (budget 10.5mil) ?

Is Fabianski & Sissoko ---> Hart & Maloney worth -8?

Or is there something else I should spend on (like the defence / Mata / Kone?)

    Squad (£1.8m in bank):
    Fabianski, Elliott
    Baines, Dawson, JoseEnrique, Monreal, Wilson
    Michu, Bale, Coutinho, Fellaini, Sissoko
    RvP, Tevez, Remy

The -8 looks a bit gruesome but I'd expect it to pay off over the next 2 weeks.

Gruesome is the right word! It will be my first -8 of the season but I already used 2FT to do Caz & Suarez --> Bale & Tevez
