Having analysed the rule changes and assessed the prices of Goalkeepers and Defenders, our third article focussing on the Sky Sports game takes a look at the Midfielders, as Fantasy managers begin to assemble their squads ahead of next month’s kick-off:

Budget Bracket

In terms of cheap likely starters, Sunderland new boy Cabral and Fulham’s summer signing Derek Boateng have been slapped with a 4.1 price tag – the pair should benefit from the tackling bonus rule at least and help free up the cash to be splashed elsewhere. Hull’s Stephen Quinn (42 apps, three goals, six assists last season) is a mainstay in the middle of the par under Steve Bruce and perhaps the best all-round option of the three.

In general, much of the budget bracket is filled with fringe players, though the promoted sides offer some regular starters. Cardiff’s Bo-Kyung Kim (4.5) became a key player for the Championship winners as the season unfolded last term, while Crystal Palace’s 4.6 priced Owen Garvan offers a more attacking option; likely to be fielded in “the hole†by Holloway, he produced four goals and six assists in 2012/13. Hull wing-back pair Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are also listed at 4.6; Brady’s set-piece duties helped him accrue four goals and 13 assists last season and he could also be fielded in “the hole†if Steve Bruce shifts from 3-5-2 to 4-4-1-1. Man City’s forgotten winger Scott Sinclair (4.7) could be one to monitor if the rumours of a potential loan move to West Brom come to fruition.

At 4.8, there’s a couple of promoted options who produced decent returns from last time out. Hull’s Robert Koren (nine goals, five assists) looks an option in “the holeâ€, with spot-kicks and a share of set-pieces and corners in his locker, while Aron Gunnarson’s eight goals and five assists highlight his appeal in the Cardiff central midfield – he’s struggling to shake off a shoulder injury in time for the kick-off, though. Villa new boy Aleksandar Tonev could prove a snip at this price if he’s handed a role behind a lone striker. Staying in the sub-5.0 bracket, Charlie Adam looks set to be an integral part of Mark Hughes’ Stoke side next term and will likely be handed a key role in central midfield – with set-pieces and corners in his locker, 4.9 looks tempting. Leon Britton offers plenty of bonus pass potential, if he remain immune to Michael Laudrup’s rotational whims in the Swansea midfield, though Tomas Rosicky (4.9) only looks an option if Arsene Wenger fails to spend in the summer.

Mid-Price Options

Newcastle’s Yoan Gouffran may be one to watch. Coming in at just 5.1, he grabbed a couple of goals after being fielded in “the hole†towards the end of the season and could be a bargain for the Magpies; he could potentially move to the left of a front three if Alan Pardew decides to move to 4-3-3. Due to Papiss Cisse’s dispute with the club, Gouffran was fielded up front in a friendly against Motherwell in midweek and managed to find the net. If Sandro can steer clear of injury this year, his style looks ideal for the bonus points ruling – a price of 5.1 may appeal for the Tottenham man, though Mousa Dembele comes in at 5.8 for Andre Villas-Boas’ side and may offer a little more attacking potential if Spurs shift to 4-3-3. West Ham’s Mark Noble, at 5.2, has spot-kicks and set-pieces to fall back on and comes in at 0.5 less than team mate Matt Jarvis.

Aaron Ramsey’s role in the Arsenal double-pivot should offer the Welshman greater chance of passing bonus points – a price of 5.8 is relatively cheap if he remains a regular under Arsene Wenger, though Jack Wilshere, at 6.2, may offer far greater potential at the Emirates if he’s selected to play in “the hole†behind a lone forward. Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa has the potential to be a real steal at 5.9 – if he can steer clear of injury, the Frenchman’s cost looks hugely enticing here.

Southampton duo Morgan Schneiderlin and Gaston Ramirez will both set you back 6.2 and both appeal for differing reasons. Schneiderlin’s passing and tackling bonus potential somewhat offsets his overall lack of offensive contribution, while the latter hoping to steer clear of injury to flourish in his favoured position behind Rickie Lambert – with just five goals and three assists last term, there’s plenty of room for improvement. Saints new boy Victor Wanyama has also been added as a mid-price option – at just 5.9, he looks a key first-team player in the season ahead.

United trio Ashley Young 6.0, Antonio Valencia (6.4) and Nani (6.8) will be hoping to recapture their form after a dire season last time out and could be given a fresh start on the flanks under new boss David Moyes. Similarly, Samir Nasri (6.3) could be a bargain if he can cement a role under new City boss Manuel Pellegrini, while Kevin Mirallas, at 6.5, has the potential to thrive as an out of position forward if, as anticipated, he’s fielded on the right of a front three under Roberto Martinez at Everton. With six goals and three assists from the right in a 4-4-1-1 in 2012/13, Mirallas may well step up another level under the Spaniard’s guidance. Spurs new boy Paulinho will be one to watch. Many suspect Villas-Boas will move to 4-3-3 this season and hand the Brazilian the role as the most advanced central midfielder – at 6.6, he’s already on plenty radars.

Staying under the 7.0 price mark, both James Morrison (6.7) and Kevin Nolan (6.8) will be looking to benefit from their roles in “the hole†once again – Morrison registered five goals and five assists, while Nolan produced 10 goals and a pair of assists in 2012/13. Stephane Sessegnon will set you back the same as Morrison but it remains to be seen whether the Benin international will still be at Sunderland when the season kicks off next month, with rumours suggesting a move away from Wearside could be on the cards. New Black Cat Emanuele Giaccherini could be the pick of Paolo Di Canio’s midfielders and is far more reasonably priced at 6.2, by comparison.

Premium Prospects

Much depends on City’s tactics under Pellegrini but if the Chilean opts for his preferred 4-2-2-2 formation, Fernandinho is likely to partner Yaya Toure in front on the back-four. The former comes in at 7.0 compared to the Ivorian’s 8.6 and could prove a viable alternative, with the Sky bonus system looking tailor-made for his talents.

Shinji Kagawa may be one of the bargains of the season if David Moyes hands him his preferred role in “the holeâ€. The former Dortmund man costs just 7.0 and will surely leap into many a Fantasy team if United part company with Wayne Rooney this summer. Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass has been handed a 7.3 price tag after last term’s success but with set-pieces and corners in his locker, the Scot’s guaranteed game time could still appeal, as he looks to improve upon his six goals and six assists in his debut year at Carrow Road. Sunderland’s Adam Johnson also looks an option but Giaccherini’s price will likely prove a deterrent for those eyeing up the Black Cats midfield. Mikel Arteta’s spot-kicks, allied with his propensity to pick up bonus, keeps him firmly on the radar at 7.5, while 7.6 priced Oscar offers an alternative route into the Chelsea midfield three – he’ll be hoping to continue the form which saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13.

Jesus Navas, at 7.6, could rival 8.4 priced David Silva for our consideration as Pellegrini brings a more attacking brand of football to City, while Philippe Coutinho will be earmarked by many after registered three goals and five assists in just 12 appearances in the previous season. The Liverpool winger costs 7.8 – 0.3 less than Steven Gerrard, though the latter does have spot-kick duties and a share of set-pieces and corners to bolster his appeal, with a deep-lying role also more inclined to favour him in terms of passing points bonus.

Frank Lampard’s consistency of game time could be set for an upturn following Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge – he’s priced at 7.9, after finishing last term as Chelsea’s top scorer with 15 goals to his name. Marouane Fellaini’s (8.3) prospects could be set for a dive, however, if Martinez rolls out a 3-4-3; the Belgian would return to a deeper role this time out, thus considerably reducing his goalscoring potential – a reliance on extra passing and tackling points may be on the cards.

Unsurprisingly, Santi Cazorla has leapt in price after last season’s superb batch of displays. The Spaniard will now set you back more than Theo Walcott (8.7 to 8.5) as a route into Arsenal’s midfield after registering 12 goals and 11 assists over 38 appearances. While Cazorla is also more likely to pick up passing bonus, it’s worth noting that Walcott’s 14 goals and 10 assists arrived over just 24 starts (and eight sub appearances) – he played over 1,000 minutes less than the Spaniard in 2012/13 and with more first-team minutes expected, could prove the better pick. Perhaps surprisingly, Gareth Bale is not the costliest midfielder on offer this season. After last term’s 21-goal haul, the Tottenham man comes in at 8.9 – 0.1 more than Eden Hazard but 0.1 less than the Belgian’s team mate Juan Mata; with Chelsea potentially primed for a double Gameweek 1, plenty of line-ups may well feature both as we look to get out of the blocks quickly.

Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league for those playing the Sky game – we’re looking to defend our crown, having finished as top-rated league in 2012/13. If you fancy the challenge, you can enter with the pin 8000112 and with Sky offering a cool £1,000 for the winner of our official “FFScout†league, there’s every incentive to get on board.

    So Negredo's coming to City,

I watched a lot of him the in Spain, including the last few seasons. Things to watch out for

He's strong, and a good finisher - but he does not engage in link up play very effectively. Despite his strength, he doesn't drop deep to hold up the ball. He was extremely strong in the air, but tends to use it offensively rather than defensively. His aerial ability in the Spanish league must be taken with a pinch of salt though, despite all of La Ligua's strengths, their vulnerability to a long ball still persists. About four or five of his goals last season came from headers, while his knockdowns for his own players met with less success. Again, this may be due to the quality of Sevilla players around him, but it was rare for him to make assists. He's left footed but he's perfectly capable of scoring from his right.

He tends to be explosive too - again, you may want to double check this - but he had a tendency to go on burst of goals followed by lean spells. Often a lot of his goals would come in against one team.

Discipline is not his strong suit, he is combative regardless of his distance to the ball, opposition players, or officials. He's matured in recent years but I've watched him a few times and felt he's been lucky to get away with some of things you hear him say/do on the pitch. Again, the Spanish League tends to be more permissive of certain off the ball incidents which premiership referees tend to look upon less kindly.

I'm puzzled by Pellegrinis signing as I'd imagine Negredo would take a while to settle in the team. He has been a consistent starter at Sevilla but would be better employed as an impact sub, especially as he still lacks the maturity or consistency to start every game. My only guess is Dzeko is well and truly on the way out, or that we are to expect some very old-fashioned football at Eastlands again.

        Heh, nice.

What did you think of him? I find him quite an intriguing player to watch, but I struggle to see how he'll settle in the league quickly. I'm also surprised that Pellegrini signed him as he's much more of a Mancini player.

Not watched very much tbh, but from what i've read it seems to pretty much agree with what you've said. Inconsistent, has a bit of power about him, but also flair. Not sure he will start very regularly under Pellegrini

He's performed very badly in Europe too; again I don't know whether that is due to Sevilla as a whole or whether he struggles against teams from other European countries. Something to consider when he moves here.

I imagine he's intended to be the Dzeko of the squad but better. Sometimes aerial is the best way to exploit teams but Dzeko's movement was too poor to be used consistently as a starter. Can see him doing well in the PL actually - think he's got a good skillset to score a fair few with the talents that will be behind him.

This could be where the difference kicks in between Sevilla and Manchester City. He won a lot in the air, and even though I doubt he'll be able to do so with such ease over here, I'm sure having the likes of Silva and Aguero to pounce on those knockdowns and work their magic would boost his assist rate at least.

FPL tactics I feel revolve more around how you use and move your funds than what formation you play. I think we have to go into the new season assuming we're going to make a mistake and pick a dud here and there. But the important thing is not that we picked a dud, but how we can move the dud as quickly as possible without under utilising funds.

It's more or less accepted that teams will be playing 3-4-3 again this year. Standard build. But even within 3-4-3 you can use your funds entirely differently. Let's look at how you can setup a flexible team:

Team 1 - MF and Forward Stack:

    4.5 4.5
    5.0 4.5 4.5 4.0 4.0
    12.0 9.5 9.5 9.0 4.5
    9.0 7.5 8.0

The midfield and forward stack is a fairly common approach but the concern here is in the defense and 3rd forward slot. Arguably, defense has more value this year than in previous years (not quite enough to overhaul 3-4-3 but certainly enough to warrant more than bargain basement prices. The funds up top at the 8.0 mark I'd argue are worth plugging into the defense. Buying someone like JRodriguez at 6.0m or Anelka at 5.5m would see the defense get fairly substantial reinforcement and much more flexibility ala ...

Team 2 - MF stack with more defense

    5.0 4.5
    5.5 5.5 4.5 4.0 4.0
    12.0 9.5 9.5 9.0 4.5
    9.0 7.5 6.0

This one is a little more balanced out. The defense has gotten the funds from that last forward spot and the difference here is likely Nastasic + Mertesacker VS Coleman + Shaw. That's a fairly worthwhile tradeoff, while the extra 0.5m on goalies ensures flexibility there if needed. I'd argue for flexibility's sake and for the fact we may well be wrong on guessing the Sunderland keeper, this one is the superior build for flexibility at least.

    Team 3 - RVP Build:

    5.0 4.5
    5.0 4.5 4.5 4.0 4.0
    12.0 9.5 9.5 5.0 4.5
    14.0 9.0 5.0

This is a surprisingly flexible build. If you have confidence in the rotating 5th mids, this could work pretty well. The concern is that you'll be missing out on one of Arsenal or City depending on who you choose for your 3rd everyday mid. The upside of course, is that you have RVP. Moving funds could also be surprisingly easy provided you ship RVP. You could easily do 5.0 mid + 14.0 > 9.5 mid + 9.0 striker. But if you insist on keeping him, you may well be looking mournfully at that 5.0mid and seeing the likes of Silva, Walcott, Oscar killing it and without a way of getting on board.

    Team 4: Aguero Build

    4.5 4.5
    5.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 4.0
    12.0 9.5 9.5 6.5 4.5
    11.0 9.0 6.0

Aguero builds have gotten a lot rarer because of the pending transfer of Negredo. I'm inclined to agree with them, but this is about flexibility and fund distribution, and looking at those varying prices, if there are good options here, this may well be the best squad in terms of fund distribution and here's why.

You have your standard midfield trio which can be mixed and matched as needed, two high price strikers but at varying price points. 11.0 is a fantastic price in terms of being able to move funds around. Suarez will be back if he stays on, and there's always Rooney too at 10.5 just waiting to be snapped up. That 4th midfield slot is also instantly more flexible. What happens if the big bandwagon is Leon Osman, Kevin Nolan or god forbid, Charlie Adam? Your 6.5 (Snodgrass I'm assuming) will be one click away.

Mixing and matching price points among midfields and forwards I feel is something important to consider and could save you that extra points hit early in the season.

Well argued and laid out, though I feel there is something wrong with it but without cogent reasons.

Seems based on numbers more than players and fixtures.

I also like and think it viable to have a few mil or so in the bank at the start of the season giving flexibility to early transfers.

I shall have to read it through several more times. You might win me round Camzy.

      12.0 9.5 7.0 6.5 4.5
      14.0 9.0 6.0

Scraps a 3rd big hitter in midfield which I'm not a fan of doing but it allows a decent 3rd/4th mid and 3rd striker. Nolan, Snodgrass and J Rod take the spots in one of my drafts.

#hcafc spent this morning working extensively on the 3-5-2 shape. As SB said last week, that system looks favourite to start PL season.

Did Brady still start when Hulll played 4-4-2 last season? If so was it behind the striker or out wide?

All this JRod love on the boards has got me to using the comparison tool to check what it is all about. Stats aren't great looking at the last six gameweeks with 0 goals and 0 assists. At least that what its telling me. Then you look deeper and his game is not suited to the new bonus system as well. He doesn't get on the ball enough to receive PC points for example and even in the game he does its in the 70% category.. Now within the same side there is a player that their style does suit the new system with PC passes, 80% PC, crosses, tackles, recoveries, set pieces (assists). His name is Adam Lallana and at 1.4% he is a massive differential in the game. Club captain lets not forget.

IMO the new bonus system is getting over stated on here. I don't think it will produce any new Charlie Adam/Barry Ferguson types and I don't see the sense in going for a player because they *might* nick an extra 5 or 10 points over the whole season (unless you have otherwise equally weighted options of course).

        I agree.

From the numbers on the FPL site, it looks like over the course of the season, players will accumulate less "points which count towards bonus points" than they did ICT, i.e. bonus points will be tighter in each game.

This theory would make the players that have a game suited to the new BPS more likely to get more bonus if the field is more compact?

I'd say that while some players like Arteta may accumulate a decent haul steadily, they're likely to be outdone by a few star performers in any given match.

I agree with that but a suited player within these spike has the potential to go from 1 to 3. It can't be a bad thing to suit the system. Especiall when the above two players are priced the same

It's either Lallana or JRod for me. the lack of budget striking options is making me lean towards the latter, though.

One must not forget that SOT completely switched off offensively in the last weeks. If i'm correct, Lambert did nothing in that period too...

agree with you Nate. SOT switched off offensively towards the end.

I think Lambert got the odd goal but when they had something to play for, and even those last few weeks, i liked what I saw with JRod. And if pre-season is anything to go by so far, he's definitely not short of confidence and will probably be utilized better this season.

IMO he's definitely good value at 1.5 less than Lambert as a budget option.

Saw you mentioning going with one keeper, Mig/Boruc. I'll prob go down that route myself tbh. Played Jaas practically every game last yr. I'll stay away from any dodgy looking team who don't know their keeper but it's a sound strategy imo.

Yeah, i was just thinking surely Mig would play every game? Only downside is if he gets injured, but that's rare for keepers. Harder to rotate 2 cheapies i think, fancy Liverpool strongly defensively this year.

Mig and Boruc is good too ofcourse, but i'm just struggling with my front 8 so need the .5

The amount of people who have put either Bony, Ruiz or JRod in, has really astounded me. You guys really want to put in losers for your attackers? That is the position that gets the most points and you guys wanna put a bunch of Ron Weasleys and Ralph Wigguns in it? Good luck guys seriously. I prefer Jack Bauers and James Bonds in my teams.

Nothing but I believe there are better options with the Saints dressing room. Also I don't think a 6 mil price tag for a front man is squad friendly. Either go bigger and go smaller to remain balanced imo

Bony has a great record, but I've stayed away, but he could do well. Ruiz ain't worth it i agree.

I expect you to be proven wrong on JRod. Got a lot better towards the end of last season, has begun playing centrally, the manager seems to rate him highly, he is doing well and has nice fixtures.

I'll try and find the link, it may have Triggerlips who posted that. Lambert was playing behind him I think. Either way, there's no disputing that towards to end of last season JRod was outperforming Lambo. For me it's on;y the fact that Lambo has pens and free-kicks that makes him anything like worth 1.5m more at this point

Lambert will start up top, unless we buy another striker and then rotation could be more probably. Rodriguez will flit from the hole, to the left side of the 3 behind Lambo. IMO

        i.e two budget mids

In time one strategy will emerge. Most seem to be trying to squeeze 3 big hitter in midfield. i've stuck with 2 and gone with value in my other 2 starting slots

and that strategy will be in fashion for about 2 weeks and then switch. FPL has no one strategy - flexibility is key.

Was Bale really that good last year? He scored a lot of amazing goals but teams will surely be wise to this now... So many times they allowed him space, didn't close him down and allowed him to get onto his left foot. He never assisted all that much if I recall either. Of course I'm getting him but are we expecting too much?

Please, I hope you're joking! I had him at the start for about 8 weeks. Only cloud was he scored his only goal when I captained him. Then 0 at Sunderland too. Poor.

I'll probably get downvoted for this, but anyway...

Danny Graham is a good finisher and a good signing. He may have had a poor fantasy season last year, but he wasn't as shite as some are suggesting (I'm aware of his shocking record at Sunderland). I'm not advocating buying him, just saying that he's a good player.

I agree about applying some caution when embracing an import to the premier league. However the issue with Afonso Alves is that he scored a significant amount of his goals against a select few teams - including 7 in one game. There are those that argue that goals are goals, and that you shouldn't isolate individual instances, but this is perhaps one example when you should.

Bony on the other hand is a younger and more malleable player who has shown signs of improvement from one season to the next - and his explosive breakthrough season last year was one filled with consistency too. Neither has he suffered from the off pitch and disciplinary issues that Alves struggled with, and is arguably playing in a team (sorry Middlesbrough!) filled with creative and dangerous players, who create a very high number of chances.

Yes, there are many players who flop when they move from abroad. Equally there are some that are an instant success. While I adopt a more conservative method myself, preferring to bring a player once they are established and saving myself unnecessary hits, many early adopters benefit from bringing in new players who explode on to the scene. After all, if you had Michu in for the first Gameweek last season, you could have had your mini league decided by those points. Horses for courses.

I feel the league they're moving from is usually a decent yard stick.

Dutch imports tend to be the most unreliable unfortunately. Lots of people scoring a ton of goals in the Dutch League only to come over and either start slow or bomb.

Spanish and German imports tend to be the best. Something to do with having the best league I'd think...
