Last Friday saw Man City make a couple of significant moves in the summer transfer market. Having acquired Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla earlier in the day, Manuel Pellegrini added to his forward options by snapping up Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina in a deal reported to be in the region of £22m. The 23-year-old Montenegro international is the club’s fourth signing of the close-season, following Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Negredo to the Etihad as Pellegrini sets about restructuring his first-team ahead of his debut season at the helm:

The subject of plenty interest over the summer, Jovetic is thought to have rejected the advances of both Arsenal and Juventus to join up at the Etihad. Speaking to the club’s official website, he revealed that City’s long-term pursuit was key to his decision, with City centre-half Matija Nastasic also playing a part in persuading him to make the move to the Premier League:

“Manchester City has wanted me for a long time, more than everyone else. They have a big project here and are always fighting for the Champions League and Premier League. This is the reason I came here. I also spoke with Nastasic who tells me good things about Manchester and the players and everything here. He sent me messages every week telling me to come. Now I am here and look forward to playing with him every week.”

The History

Starting his career as a 16-year-old for Partizan Belgrade, Jovetic produced 13 goals and 10 assists over 51 league games between 2006 and 2008, with a further 10 goals arriving in 10 European and domestic cup matches. His performances caught the eye of Fiorentina, with La Viola splashing out £8m for Jovetic’s services in May 2008.

The six foot one forward’s first season in Serie A was a transitional one, however, with just two goals and a pair of assists delivered from 29 matches. Jovetic stepped up a level in 2009/10, with six goals and 10 assists from 29 appearances, but his progress was halted the next year after a cruciate ligament injury ruled him out for the entire 2010/11 campaign. Returning from injury, he racked up 27 goals and 11 assists over 58 Serie A matches in his final couple of seasons at the club.

On the international stage, Jovetic notched twice in six appearances for the Montenegro Under 21s and has turned out for the senior side on 27 occasions, finding the net 10 times.

The Prospects

Mainly utilised as a forward in a 3-5-2 formation at Fiorentina last term, Jovetic is a versatile type who has the ability to play in a number of positions under Pellegrini. While fellow new boy Negredo is a more one-dimensional, typical centre-forward, the Montenegro international summed up his all-round game by saying:

“I’m a forward who is good in one-on-one situations. That’s my best quality and I think my best years are ahead of me. I have played in a lot of systems. I can play as a striker, behind the striker or on the left. I think and I hope I can score between 15 and 20 goals in all competitions this season.”

Pellegrini’s penchant for a 4-2-2-2 system should prove beneficial to Jovetic, then, but with Aguero, Negredo, David Silva and Jesus Navas all vying for the four advanced roles, in addition to the options provided by Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko, rest and rotation will surely come into effect.

With both Negredo and Sergio Aguero perceived as more natural goalscorers, it’s unlikely that Jovetic would get the nod to lead the line in a 4-2-3-1 formation, for example, with a role in “the hole” or even wide left a possibility. His trickery in possession and eye for a killer pass may be more suited to a more withdrawn, playmaker role, thus reducing his appeal as a Fantasy prospect –indeed, as mentioned in the Negredo Scout Report, Aguero could still be the forward to earn most game time under Pellegrini, due to his ability to play either of the central roles up top.

Both new boys have yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, though a price of 9.5 looks likely for Jovetic and Negredo in Fantasy Premier League – less than Aguero but clearly more than the 7.5 priced Dzeko, who looks forced further down the pecking order on the back of Friday’s business. At that price, Negredo would likely be the better value due to his advanced role though much depends on just how much Pellegrini plans to utilise the depth of his squad over all competitions – it may well be that Fantasy managers are faced with the same dilemma posed by Roberto Mancini, where we’re anxiously awaiting the team sheets every weekend.

At present, then, it’s hard to see past Aguero as the man most likely in terms of security, though the remaining pre-season games will hopefully give us a window into the new manager’s thinking. With home games against Newcastle and Cardiff and a trip to Hull in the opening three, the platform is certainly there for Pellegrini’s side to rack up the goals and get their season off to a quick-fire start as they look to reclaim the title from neighbours United.

What will you do differently in FPL this season?

For some it might be a pledge to make less points hits. For others it's to invest more or less in defence?

What was your key mistake last year and did you learn from it?

Had him (Michu) in GW 1 but on the bench.
He caused me more agony than anything else in reality.. Think he was over rated.

Never felt I got full value out of him.. sold and bought back eventually..only to sell again..

Summed up my really poor season..

I will look at upcoming fixtures and rotations of players in my team more..
Important is not if A is a better player than B - its all about how they fit into your team and who will be a sub etc
That's the hardest part to get right I think..

Making the transfers you really need and not just jumping from bandwagon to bandwagon while your overall team struggles..

I will never buy a player who has doubts over his playing time. Missing the odd game is understandable but buying Evans for united good run of fixtures was terrible. Played 3 out of 7 games and only starting 2. He also received 2 yellow card's.

Less in defence and fewer hits covers it.

Spending less in defence allows more big hitters to be crammed in from the start, which in turn should lead to fewer points hits.

My big change last year was to swallow my pride and get on bandwagons quickly. The team value gained really came in handy for the last part of the season.

This year I need to take more risks but plan them well to make the next step into the top ranking places. My dullard mentality pulled me back too often.

Worked perfectly last season - most of the bandwagons were sustainable and rolled sweetly into pointsville with scarcely a bump. I'm not making any assumptions that this will happen again this year (but then I am a bitter twisted player, mentally scarred from avoiding Michu, Fellaini, Suarez, Benteke, etc. pretty much all of last season 🙁 )

CHANGE: Christmas usually fecks up my season. All the holiday noise messes with the focus. Also need to be even less stubborn about getting in douchebag players when they are on a run (the CRonaldos, Nanis, Suarezes, Gooners etc).

NEW: Going to try a completely new transfer strategy.

MISTAKES: My major mistake last year was doing transfers for transfer's sake. It comes a point when your squad is so good you don't really need to transfer, so you start doing these luxury transfers. My biggest mistake with this was removing Suarez to complete the power 5 with Mata a couple of days into the Christmas run (see above).

After spending a lot of time last year trying to do the best I possibly could and ending up in the top 5k, I'm going to take it much easier this year and try not to over analyse, follow my gut more and spend less time worrying about my team. I want to try to only think about it the day before/the day of the deadline.

It's a move which is partially forced on me, but I reckon I'll enjoy FPL more as a result!

Thing is with Michu, at least, is that he will still score points to make him worth something...

Just quite probably not £9.0m worth of FPL investment.

He's had the Steven Ireland bump up, but I don't expect he'll have the Steven Ireland fall from grace either.

Depends how well Bony settles into their team. He could easily take away a high% of Michu's goals if Michu is played deaper. The only saving grace could be he's still regarded as a Midfielder. They may decide to play him as a lone forward when Swansea play away from home.

I think he'll fair better than Siggy, purely because he's nailed on, plays a more attacking role and has stayed with the same side. Siggy went from excellent attacking mid to rotating chap in a better team and little chance of bonus.

Michu will do well this season, but not as well as last.

More like a dempsey imo after his breakthrough season with fulham. The following year I think he might have been top scoring mid before moving on to Chelsea. I think a lot of teams will have him in the second half of the season especially if they are knocked out of Europe

Don't think he's "that" overpriced. Just not the bargain he was with his price and Bony coming in. Although he does seem better suited to playing behind than alone upfront. Sigurdsson was overpriced because he wouldn't get much game time. Michu could be in people's thoughts with good fixtures

15 goals, 2 assists for Rayo in La Liga.

17 goals, 2 assists for Swansea in the Premier league.

Age 27, rarely misses a match. Nailed on. How many other 9+m options have scored like that consecutively in decent leagues? Off top of my head, Lampard and Gerrard, but they're a wee bit old now.

      He'll do fine.

Scored against Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea off the top of my head last season.

Arguably you could say he is a 9.0m option that you stick in your team and he gets your dozen and a bit goals for you in a season.

I think he will definitely still get points over the course of the season (so no to this season's Siggurdson) but I think there are 3 things turning people away from him (myself included).
      - Difficult Fixtures in the first 6 weeks
      - Europa League (Stoke, Newcastle effect)
      - Bony signing (although this doesn't bother me compared to the first 2 because I think he has proved he scores points playing at no.10)

        Chazza

        Reputation Level: Scout

"Nolan performs better with Carroll"- I must admit I've had my doubts about this and was especially interested when people were choosing not to pick Nolan based on this conjecture despite his favourable fixtures to start the season.

I looked at the results of West Ham's Premier league games last season and BEFORE Nolan's hat-trick (with Carroll playing) against AN ALREADY RELEGATED Reading, these were essentially (bit of a grey area with substitute appearances) Nolan's league stats:

With Carroll: 18 games, 4 goals, 1 assist

Without Carroll: 15 games, 3 goals, 1 assist

Also, he started the season well. Providing a good pre-season under his belt I think Nolan is a great pick- a proven fantasy midfield goalscorer at a reasonable price.

3 goals? I thought it was 2...oh well. Either way he had 7 goals and about 2 assists until a GW38 game against an already relegated Reading. Mirallas/Snodgrass are better IMO.

Nolan scored 2 goals without him and 5 with him, can't be arsed with the games but he went on a streak of 1 goal in 19 PL games last season. No thanks.

      A lot.

Nolan's total output over the season was 149 points in 33 games.

      That's broken down into:
      - 97 points in 19 games with Carroll (5.11 PPG)
      - 28 points in 10 games without Carroll (2.80 PPG)
      - 24 points in 4 games where Carroll played some part but not the full game (6.00 PPG)

Even adding those last 2 categories together to be generous that only makes 52 points in 14 games (3.71 PPG) without Carroll.

Also, to satisfy those who for arbitrary reasons don't wish to count GW38, that would bring the 'with Carroll' figures down to 78 points in 18 games (4.33 PPG)

Whichever way you slice it, Nolan's output is much better with Carroll than without.

Fair enough gw I am just getting a bit disillusioned with the whole hc experiment tbh. The hot topics are average at best with the odd gem and nobody is upvoting the interesting posts so it is both impossible to find them when you log on and not worth the effort to post anything worthwhile as it gets lost in minutes.

Upvotes need to be promoted in some way imo to increase the quality of posts again otherwise the message boards will be left to the cretins again.

    Sturridge - JRod - Berbatov

It seems that there is always a new player who goes bonkers at the start of the season aka Michu, Aguero and Hazard.

I toyed with the idea of actively recruiting new players to catch the run and ditch the ones that need time to settle, they are usually a bit cheaper too.

who is the best pick from City's plethora of attacking mids/fwds

Just caught on to the Baines vs Mirallas debate, a key point with this is money goes a LOT further in defence, a 4.5m defender is a lot better than a 4.5m midfielder.
Yes Baines is probably the better prospect, but you end up with a cheapie midfielder, and they are not appealing.
So a better question I think is:

Is Baines and a 4.5m MF (Thomas) better than a 4.5m DF (Collins/Clyne/Turner) and Mirallas?

I wish I could swap my 5th MF place for a 6th DF, that would be sweet.

Defensive rotations. Got 23 million to spend on my defence.

Want, Saints, Norwich and West Ham (so Clyne, Turner and Collins). The question is do I try and Coleman and Yanga and have a 5-way rotation going on or, or maybe get Mert and a 4.0 and thae a 3-way (even though it isn't good). What defences have people got?

I realiase Hazard has HUL in GW1, but after that he has mnu, blank.

Why is he in so many drafts? It strikes me as a GW2 transfer waiting to happen. GW4 seems more ideal to me, especially for those planning to wc after GW3. Obviously a DGW changes that, but is not looking likely

I'm not sure i agree with that.

My other issue is that with RvP in toe (and I;d rather start with him and lose him then not have him and scramble to get him in) it's Hazard and rotating budget mids or Snodgrass and Mirallas. I reckon the latter 2 could both hit 170. Hazard will hit 190-200. Really worth 2-3 million more?
