Over the last few weeks, a combination of factors have elevated Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez into many pre-season Fantasy squads. The Saints’ kind opening run of fixtures has caught the eye, while Rodriguez’s more budget-friendly appeal over Rickie Lambert has also played a part in how we assess his potential across the Fantasy games. Having scored three times in the opening couple of summer friendlies, Rodriguez has been quick to hit form and as interest in the former Burnley man gathers, we use the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to analyse the impact of Mauricio Pochettino on both Rodriguez and Lambert over the previous season.

As mentioned previously, the KPI helps us track certain key statistics which are indicative of a player’s form over a certain Gameweek range or season. Having ran the rule over Robin Van Persie’s impact at United compared to his final year with Arsenal, we delve into last season’s data to look at the Saints duo’s performances from Gameweek 1-22 under Nigel Adkins compared to Gameweek 23-38, when Pochettino was installed as the new man in charge at St Mary’s. By also utilising the Comparison Tool across the two periods, there’s plenty for Fantasy managers to mull over.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I'm set barring some over the top transfer dealings:

    Migs / Boruc
    Coleman / Mertesacker / Ivanovic / Collins / Brayford
    Hazard / Mirallas / Walcott / Coutinho / JThomas
    Dzeko / Soldado / Lambert

    Ivanovic --> 5.0/5.5
1mil to upgrade either Dzeko/Lambert to Bony or Soldado to Aguero in my thinking....

Luiz has only played 30 minutes in pre season so far compared to Cahill's 420, Ivanovic's 382 & Terrys 298.

This is mainly down to having an extended break after the Confederations Cup but does mean he will be behind the other for fitness.

Currently have 4 DGWers. Would I be foolish to leave so much money on my bench for GW3. At the moment I'm very happy with my team and could only see myself making 1 transfer, leaving me with this for GW3:

    Mignolet (MUN)
Koscielny (TOT) | Coleman (car) | Brayford (EVE) | Parr (SUN)
Walcott (TOT) | Coutinho (MUN) | Mirallas (car) | Kim (EVE)
Bony (wba) | Benteke > Man City FWD (HUL)

    Harper | Terry | Hazard | Lukaku

I know you can't really plan ahead and injuries could come into it but I would still have 1 FT in this situation and could see this working. With Man City having Hull at home the two previous GWs should help to pick one out of Dzeko, Negredo or Jovetic for this game.

      Newcastle United:

Pens - Ben Arfa, Cabaye (Shola if he is on the pitch will be in the mix but shouldn't happen too often)
Corners - Cabaye mainly, but we haven't scored from a corner for almost 2 years so I wouldn't get too excited.
Free kicks - Cabaye most likely but Debuchy has been teed up a couple of times in pre season and Ben Arfa may fancy the odd one.

    Hi all.
This has probably been discussed to death already but what is the benefit or Coutinho over Gerrard? As I see it, Gerrard will probably play deeper but is on many set pieces and pens. Coutinho looks good but will surely assist more than score, leading me to think Gerrard is the man to get. However...I see Coutinho in loads of teams but not Gerrard - can anyone please explain the thinking behind Coutinho over Gerrard?

Coutinho has had a brilliant preseason, and a great end to last season too. This is all without Suarez. Coutinho is either playing 'in the hole' or in the attacking front 3. Either way he is playing an advanced role, slightly out of position. For 9M, you're getting an advanced MID/FWD who plays for one of the best teams in the league, and has amazing opening fixtures. Liverpool have also conceded one goal in the last 6 games, and have another this weekend.

Thanks for the info - I know he is a good option, but Gerrard is a proven performer and those set pieces give him the edge for me. I have exactly 9 million and if I thought Silva would get a full 90 mins I would have him, but I have no Liverpool attack otherwise. Problems problems...

Yeah, pretty much - I get the impression Jovetic plays wider and I'd back him to play over Navas. Negredo competing with Dzeko and Aguero, unless he plans to play Aguero wide so I just get the feeling Jovetic will get more gametime.

I'm not a City fan though, so I don't know. Having said all this, I wouldn't pick either yet.

    RVP or not RVP

if he do something in gw 1 teams with him will benefit and if he dosn't teams without him will need use wc or take big pts hit

flying start of the season is very important

I am currently going without RVP. but I'm starting to wonder, with his price tag, if he will be more valuable this year with less players going with him in their starting 11. I know he has high ownership but a fair percentage of these will be made up of casual selectors. To get a true picture of how many challenging FF players will have him in their team, perusing the RMTs on here is a greater source

Last year we had to have RVP because if we didn't we'd lose ground on rivals. This season, with the slightly off putting 14 million tag slapped on him, we may actually gain ground on a fair amount of our rivals.

The captain pick issue is also key to having him. You don't have a 14 mil player in your team unless you are captaining him almost every week of the season, bar the DGWs. The positive here is that RVP produces almost every week of the season whereas any one of Hazard, Couthinho, Wally, and the other big hitters up top are, while obviously capable of many big returns, still no where near as consistent and the potential of 2 point captains in a RVP less team is far greater.

I'm still without him, but the closer we get to next Saturday, the stronger the urge becomes

Surely you can't plan to wildcard GW 2-3...?

        Why not?

        1. Get rid of DGW deadwood
        2. See what's happening at Citeh(form/strikers)
        3. Get Rvp(if required)
        4. Hopefully have more Bale news
        5.Check on Sturridge fitness
        6. Increase TV by 1m
7 Get of to a good start
        8. See how the new boys Soldado/Bony are doing

          After one week?

It may require more time Danny boy.

Best keeping the WC for a bigger DGW.

1- Could do that with a couple of hits
          2- Can't tell the form/nailed on strikers after 1-2 gw's
3- So leaving him when he plays Swansea, then getting him in for Chelsea, Liverpool and City in 3 of his next 4 matches?
          4- Fair point
5- Will probably become clear at the Friday press conference
6- Only the 1st week, and you may already have most of the players increasing in price. Better in an International break.
7- Can do that with 3 Chelsea players, and not wildcarding. Lot of the single GW players will outscore Villa's 2 game ones.
8- 1 game won't be enough to assess

          1. This you can plan for without WC.
          2. Will you know after 1-2 GWs?
          3. Get him from the start.
          4. Either you will know by start of season or around deadline for GW3.
          5. There are plenty of good attacking options and he's just one transfer.
          6. Maybe...
          7. Hoepfully you will manage to do this anyway
          8. Will you know after 1-2 GWs?

But it was a question as well. I did WC really early last year but that was due to major lack of experience and I had to jump on a number of bandwagons and get rid of dead meat. I would just assume that it is an option of last resort (if a lot of things go wrong) and not something you plan for...

I have many different draft ideas. A post-GW3 WC for one 🙂

GB, if you can hold out til post GW3, you'll also have the international break gives you longer, plus can swap out any international injuries
