We continue our analysis of the Group C options with a look at Ivory Coast. In what’s regarded as one of the most open of the eight groups, Sabri Lamouchi’s men open their campaign with a showdown against Japan on Sunday June 15 at 5pm before taking on Colombia four days later at 5pm, then squaring up to Greece in a potentially decisive final group match on Tuesday June 24 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

In a group containing Morocco, Gambia and Tanzania, The Elephants won four and drew two of their six matches. Finishing top with 15 goals scored, five conceded and a couple of clean sheets accrued, they then defeated Senegal 4-2 in a two-legged play-off to seal their passage into next month’s tournament.

Most Starts Boubacar Barry (8), Salomon Kalou, Gervinho (7), Yaya Toure, Cheick Tiote (6), Didier Drogba, Didier Zakora (5)

Most Goals Salomon Kalou (5), Yaya Toure (4), Didier Drogba, Wilfried Bony (3)

The Key Targets

The Ivorians arrive on the back of an impressive 2-2 friendly draw with Belgium, though the game once again exposed their defensive limitations. Former Spurs midfielder Didier Zakora and Kolo Toure (both 5.1 in FantasyiTeam) were the central defensive pairing that evening in March, though Lamouchi also has the option of Sol Bamba should he move the former into a sitting role in front of the back-four.

An unimpressive clean sheet record in qualifying suggests defensive returns look rather doubtful, though elsewhere in defence, Serge Aurier offers a greater attacking threat that fellow full-back Arthur Boka – the highly-rated 21-year-old notched six goals and six assists for Ligue 1 side Toulouse and has been linked with a move to Arsenal due to Bacary Sagna’s expected absence. Available for a mere 4.6 in FantasyiTeam compared to Boka’s 5.0, Aurier is the bargain buy at the back.

In the centre of the park, Zakora will vie with Cheick Tiote, Serey Die and Romaric for the defensive midfield berths, though their appeal is minimal in comparison to Yaya Toure. The most advanced of the central three, the City man notched four times in qualifying and arrives on the back of his extraordinary 20-goal season – unsurprisingly, he’s highly priced in FantasyiTeam, setting you back 7.3.

Up top, Didier Drogba remains the main man. The former Chelsea striker netted three times in five appearances during qualifying and is number one spot-kick taker ahead of Toure – he fired a late penalty equaliser against Morocco last September when the City midfielder was on the pitch. Drogba’s physical presence could be a real problem for the Japanese in the final group game, in particular, though he’s far from budget-friendly at 8.9 in FantasyiTeam.

Whilst Drogba is likely to be the favoured Ivory Coast forward amongst Fantasy managers, both Salomon Kalou and Gervinho (available for 7.6 and 7.8 respectively in FantasyiTeam) carry exceptional form into next month’s tournament and may prove a cannier acquisition. Kalou – the top scorer in qualification with five strikes – scored 16 goals and provided six assists for Lille in the season gone by, while Gervinho produced nine goals and 10 assists for Roma and looks vastly-improved from the player that struggled at Arsenal.

The Long Shot

Wilfried Bony is uncertain to start but, if he brings his domestic form to the competition, will surely offer a threat off the bench at the very least. The Swansea striker netted in three of his five group games and with 17 goals in his debut year in the Premier League, will be feeling a little unlucky if he fails to nail down a role in Lamouchi’s XI. Coming in at 8.6 in FantasyiTeam, he may be a punt too far.

Put the tab on defensive. Don't count the fouls and was dribbled then you'll get the RBs.

Similar to the current Japan team actually, with the likes of Kagawa, Honda, Okazaki, Kiyotake.

Certainly puts a spanner in the works with the McDonald's rules at the moment.

Makes smaller defensive teams great options, like Greece.

Maniatis is my first choice with Greece being so defensive, also he has been OOP in midfield recently. Hoping he comes in at 4.5

Many don't rate him because he didn't score much for Chelsea and was reduced to bench fodder from the beginning. But same here, hard to remember the guy playing badly, and can recall some very good performances from him. Like in CL when Chelsea won it.

Different sort of player....When it comes to pace Walcott has very few peers..including Balotteli, who's no slouch himself. The trick is to play to that strength. By seasons end if, they both played similar minutes, I wouldn't be surprised to see Wally outscore him.

Have I read the rules wrong? Seems like you have to pick a squad of 23 and then pick 11 to start without the option to change them?

In the last one couldn't you change the low scorers for players still to come?

So how does it work then?

You pick 23 players and then change the ones that score badly for players still to play the next day? (Like the euro 2012 game)

Why have a squad of 23 then? Surely most people will fill their squad with cheap rubbish so they can afford 11-14 top players?

I think it's to give you options as that's your squad for the first 3 rounds of games, so you might want to pick players who've got an easy game and bench 'em for tougher fixtures.
At first glance I quite like it, as, depending on pricing, it gives you the potential for lots of differentials rather than going for all the must-have big-hitters.

Not that that strategy did me any favours in FF this season...

Hi all, hope everyone is good, not posted for a while (too long)

I have set up a fantasy iteam for wc but having never played the game before have a few questions:

    1. Can you use transfers to get more than one captain? EG if I had neymar as captain for 12th and then transfered him out for Costa on 13th would I get double points for both or just Neymar?

    2. Looking at the points scoring system it seems like its worth investing in decent defenders so you don't cop too many minus points, am I right?

    3. With the above in mind and the increased points for goals (5 for striker instead of 4) is the best formation to play 3-4-3?

Any helps from anyone who has played the game or knows what they are doing would be very much appreciated

      1) Only one captain per gameround. If you did what you suggested, you'd keep the double points bonus for Neymar, even if you transferred him out, and Costa would just score as normal. You may have already noticed but I'll mention it anyway, Brazil have a DGW in round 1.

      2) You definitely want a balanced team IMO. I try and use all my free transfers to rotate forwards and occasionally midfielders, so if you can select a half decent defence at the start you won't regret it.

      3) Yes and no. Midfielders score 6 points for a goal, and the most expensive midfielders are a lot cheaper than the best forwards. Your team budget will increase over the course of the tournament, so by GR5 you should be ok playing 3/4/3. But with budget being a massive issue at the start, 3/5/2 will be the most popular formation.

If there's anything else I can help with you can contact me at alan.davey@fantasyiteam.com

Poor Southampton - lost their manager, their team being plundered (Shaw and Lallana at the very least will be gone). Next season could be a long one for them. Seems to be the fate of 'smaller' clubs nowadays, well moreso than previously - any success and all the vultures start hovering

You can argue that Spain, Germany or England is the strongest, Italy is very clearly weak. It's posiion in relation to the French an Portugese league is even questionable.

                    lol

Italy doesn't have teams as good as bvb, Bayern, barca, and both Madrid teams but the Italian league has depth

juve, milan, inter, roma, Napoli, fiorentina are all good teams

epl is the same. the league is deep but none of the teams are top class

german league is bad except for 2 teams

and honestly, talk to someone outside of England who watches more than one league

I guarantee they would not say german or English league are the best.

it is clearly la liga as they have the top 3 of 4 best teams in the world

Lamela didnt arrive injured though. People were saying they will put hom in their teams, but there was no good reason to put him in. Other than glimpses o talent (i said even townsend showed glimpses o talent and noone would put him in) then there is him doing wrll in Italy (i said it means nothing, and pointed out italys flops) Then saying Lamela will do well because Ramsey managed to improve is ludacrous. He could go onto be the best player in the world, all im saying is that there is no basis or evidence to siggest that he can or will be a good fpl option.

Bale was also shite a few years ago.... Look what happened there...

Suarez continuously hit the woodwork two season ago and was subjected to ridicule on here....

Lamela will come good but yes that is just my opinion and of course I may be wrong... A young lad moving to a foreign country with a heavy price tag attached was always going to affect his performance... He then got injured and the rest followed...

At least Lamela has actually had a great season in his career. Townsend has been terrible snd has loomed pretty average previously in league 1.

Maybe Lamela won't be great next season but Townsend, well in about 3 years when people have forgotton about that England game, he'll be lucky to be back in League 1, probably lower.

Are you really that deluded? What makes you think Lamela won't improve and Townsend will.

Not forgetting Lamela managed an assist in like 5 games, compared to Townsend who managed NONE in 25 games.

Has Spurs made the wrong choice yet again?

Pochettino came into a good Southampton team with a wealth of young players available and came into EPL with just a 32% win rate at Espanyol and over a full season had a win rate of 38% at Sts.

Whilst Sts have played well under him, he has pretty much utilised the players Adkins had brought thro whilst his signings have had very little impact eg Dani Osvaldo for £15m.

A 5 year contract from Levy must have certain milestones in place after the last few years of the White Heart Lane revolving door? Anyway its left a little egg on a certain Dutch mans face-for now!

Erm, i thought he was impressive at Espanyol? That's the impression I got. Stats can tell the wrong story, he made a massive impression on that team, it was instant, they outplayed and humiliated a lot of top teams within a few months, and relegation was never a possibility like it was under Atkins whose team were defensively shambolic. I think he's exactly like Martinez, hungry, ambitious, people weren't sure how good he was until he got the chance. I think Levy has finally picked the right manager. I hope they play good football anyway because they're horrid.

Thats the point being made - the guy has been put on a pedestal for revolution at Sts but Adkins and his staff brought the Club up and had that Youth team in place to produce the quality they have demonstrated.

Whilst Southampton have played attractively and he may get Spurs playing a better style but he has not got the CV to support a top 4 challenge, a pull on top players, or as a winner. So its a bit of a gamble ?

Spurs fans may have felt that bringing in a guy Winning titles with Ajax and playing Champions Lge may have been a statement.

Yeah. He'll almost certainly play as the most advanced of a midfield 3. With Bony/Drogba up top, Kalou & Gervinho on either side.
