We turn our attentions to Portugal now, as our covering of Group G continues. Paulo Bento’s side get their campaign underway by facing one of the favourites, Germany, on Monday June 16 at 5pm before taking on USA six days later at 11pm, and finish their group schedule with a showdown against the less-fancied Ghana at 5pm on Thursday June 26:

Road to Qualification

The Portuguese finished second to Russia in a qualifying group that also included Israel, Azerbaijan, Northern Ireland and Luxembourg. Winning six and drawing three of their 10 fixtures, Bento’s side scored 20 times but failed to impress at the back – conceding on nine occasions, they managed just four clean sheets in a relatively weak group. Up against Sweden in a two-legged play-off, they chalked up a 1-0 home win before triumphing 3-2 on their travels, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring all four goals to ensure his nation’s progress.

Most Starts Rui Patrico, Miguel Veloso, Joao Moutinho (12), Fabio Coentrao (11), Pepe, Bruno Alves, Cristiano Ronaldo, Helder Postiga, Joao Pereira, Raul Meireles, Nani (8)

Most Goals Cristiano Ronaldo (8), Helder Postiga (6), Bruno Alves (4)

Most Assists Joao Moutinho (9), Fabio Coentrao (3), Hugo Almeida, Cristiano Ronaldo (2)

The Key Targets

As the above statistics show, Bento has placed his faith in a small core of players – each of his preferred XI for the qualifiers featured at least eight times in the starting line-up. Since clinching their spot in this month’s tournament, Portugal have played two friendlies, with a 5-1 win over Jamaica in March followed by a goalless draw against Greece at the end of last month, albeit without Ronaldo.

Tactically, Portugal set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with an ability to counter at speed perhaps more suited to playing against tougher opponents, given that Bento’s side have struggled to break down teams that were willing to sit deep. Both Fabio Coentrao and Joao Pereira (available for 5.9 and 5.8 in FantasyiTeam) are nailed-on for the full-back berths – despite a lack of game time at Real Madrid last season, the former is key for Bento and will be tasked with foraging forward and offering width from deep, as evidenced by his goal and a trio of assists over the qualifiers.

Whilst Pepe is also as secure a starter, it seems more likely that Bruno Alves will be the man to watch out for at the back. The latter scored four times during the qualifiers, with his aerial threat in the box coming to fruition time and again – he comes in at 5.8 in FantasyiTeam, to Pepe’s 6.0.

In central midfield, Joao Moutinho is the standout option. Whilst Miguel Veloso’s role as the deep-lying destroyer in front of the back-four is now under increasing threat from Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, Moutinho (6.7 in FantasyiTeam) is nailed-on and his nine assists during qualifying leaves Raul Meireles – without any returns in eight appearances – firmly in the shade.

Handed a role on the left of the front three with the freedom to roam, Cristiano Ronaldo’s contribution will be the difference between success and failure. It remains to be seen if he’ll fully recover from knee and thigh problems in time and if the Real Madrid man fails to produce his very best, Bento’s side may struggle to progress beyond the group stages – eight goals and a pair of assists in eight appearances sums up how essential Ronaldo is.

Lone forward Helder Postiga chipped in with an impressive six strikes – without the aid of spot-kicks – and will remain firmly under the radar, though, due to Ronaldo’s popularity – understandably, he’s the most budget-friendly of the two in FantasyiTeam, by 8.1 to 10.7. United’s Nani should be handed the role on the right of the front three but made a minimal impact over qualifying and has done little, either domestically or on the international stage, to justify our attention – nonetheless, at just 5.7 and listed as a midfielder in FantasyiTeam, he may persuade one or two to take a punt.

The Long Shots

The energy-sapping conditions will surely ensure that most, if not all, teams will look to utilise three substitutes during each match. Bento could turn to Porto’s Silvestre Varela, who has a habit of producing the goods off the bench, to make the difference in the latter stages of games as opposition backlines begin to tire. He sets you back 6.6 in FantasyiTeam.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Back to the Premier League today

Diego Costa looks certain to be a Chelsea player for next season and thereby bringing back a fantasy asset that has long alluded us - A potentially credible Chelsea forward.

This should be something to rejoice, as the game could suddenly have another potential 20 goal a season player to break up the Suarez focused template of 2013/14 and the RVP one of 2012/13.

On paper he should be first name on your team sheet. But will you be tempted? Or is Hazard the better option for assists and his penalty duties?

I, like most, will see how he 'settles' in..... He'll come in around 10-11m, think (again like most) will put their money into proven fpl players to start with

Personally I can't see there ever being a viable Chelsea striker in FPL terms under Mourinho,

Even Drogba, widely seen as a Chelsea legend, had a mediocre goal record under Mourinho's management. In his system, the main role of the striker is to hold the ball up and run into the channels, creating room for onrushing midfielders, not necessarily score 25 goals a season.

At a similar price to Suarez, Aguero, RVP etc, I just don't see Costa scoring enough.goals. Adding to that, the threat of rotation if Torres stays, I can't see him becoming a worthwhile FPL option.

        This.
The only thing that tempts me from Chelsea is their defence. Hazard I think will be overpriced and he does rely a lot on penalties, although in his last 2 seasons he does have a good first half and fades away in the second half of the season

Drogba scored 29 in 2009/10 and 20 in 2006/7 and has scored 100 in 226 appearances for Chelsea. That's roughly one every two games..I'd take that kind of not very viable striker any day.

09/10 was Ancelotti though and they played 442 so slightly different circumstances. Think Costa will do alright but not light the PL up so probably about 12-15 league goals. Don't think I'll be going there for 11+. Prefer Hazard.

09/10 was under Ancelotti, not Mourinho, that's my point. Even Drogba didn't score huge numbers of goals under Mourinho.

One goal every 2 games wouldn't make him any better a FPL prospect than Giroud, Remy, Rodriguez etc. and would be nowhere near Suarez, Sturridge, Aguero, Rooney etc.

Given that he's most likely going to be price with the latter group than the former, I can't see him being worth his FPL price tag.

I think he'll do well for Chelsea, but just can't see enough goals to make him worth 11M.

What do you think he'll be priced at? Anyone know what price Aguero was on arrival, should be similar to that I would have thought?

Aguero was 11.5m I think. Be interesting to see how much he is in relation to Hazard. If cheaper then he could be an alternative option. If the same as Hazard then the midfielder on penalties surely gets the nod.

        Drogba in PL under Mourinho:

        2004/05: 26 Games, 10 Goals
        2005/06: 29 Games, 12 Goals
        2006/07: 36 Games, 20 Goals

Not bad, not amazing either although that last season was great.

Not sure about assists though - if Costa scored 15 goals but also got 10 FPL assists he'd get a fine tally.

Also Drogba's move to Chelsea is a case study in how not to let a player settle in. He was in hotels, given no help with the language. Chelsea changed the way it integrates players from other countries now after that. It is no coincidence that when he was settled in 2006 and then went on the rampage.

They did the same with Gullit...that's right the really cool, urban, hip Ruud Gullit...that Chelsea thought it would be a great idea to accomodate in a hotel in Slough. Not a great start.

Exactly, that was a great season for Drogba and he still didn't score much more than 1 every 2.

The way Mourinho plays, don't get me wrong it's effective, but his sides don't score enough goals for the striker to compare to say the Liverpool strikers.

        Drogba record under JM

        Premier League

        2004/2005 18 games started, 8 games sub, 10 goals 5 assists

        2005/2006 20 games started, 9 games sub, 12 goals 11 assists

        2006/2007 32 games started, 4 games sub, 20 goals 4 assists

        All competitions

        2004/2005 30 games started,11 games sub, 16 goals 5 assists

        2005/2006 31 games started, 12 games sub, 17 goals 11 assists

        2006/2007 64 games started, 7 games sub, 39 goals 9 assists

Drogba's record under JM shows that the right striker can thrive with his tactics imo.

As most have said when compared to someone like RVP, who under LVG is going to be the main man again, its hard to make an argument for Costa when you could take Hazard

Don't Chelsea usually park the bus after 1 goal? Not as much explosion potential then, surely?

And after jumping on the Soldado wagon at the start of last season, I'm reluctant to punt on strikers who have not played in the EPL before.

What template? The early templates don't normally start to emerge till the pre-season RMTs start to converge - are you trying to form one even before the new prices have been announced?

And what about the World Cup Fantasy templates? (One may not be enough, since there doesn't appear to be general agreement yet about which game is going to be the most popular or about the rules).

RVP and Suarez were already established PL players, and even then there were reservations about both at the start of their big seasons. At the start of the 2013/14 season the big discussion was 'Bale or RVP or are they both too expensive?', and not everyone brought Suarez in as soon as his ban was over. How can a newcomer with no PL experience possibly be the first name on my team-sheet, unless he is very cheap or scores shedloads of goals in the World Cup and in pre-season and looks nailed on (if he gets to play pre-season)?

Costa is most unlikely to be in my initial squad at all, never mind first name on the team-sheet, but may possibly play himself in later in the season. One for the watch list perhaps.

Is he the first name on your team-sheet, Jonty, and if not then why do you think he should be on ours?

They're just too reliant on Ronaldo, none of the other attacking players are convincing.

That said, they should get out of the group and potentially then beat the winner of Group H (Belgium?)

Anyone been watching France's recent games? .... Cabaye's position in the French team, does he play the No10 role just off the Striker or is it a more central midfield role?

Trying to decide between Cabaye or Valbuena for my Fantasy i Team.

The lack of transfers really rewards good initial team selection, but injuries/minimal management means you get very bored with the game. Only real issues are the lack of points for assists and a 'bonus transfer window.'

If Chelsea get Fabregas + Costa and keep hold of Hazard, how would they line up?

I don't really expect Fabregas to turn out for Chelsea under Mourinho but anything's possible..

Surely they realise that Fabregas won't be able to effectively play as one of the two holding mids in a 4-2-3-1... So does that mean the end of Oscar if Fabregas moves there?

Yep that looks like the best formation if those transfers happen.

I'm interested in assists of strikers under Mourinho though. He does like an aggressive central striker that can hold up the ball and let others come in and score. Costa's assist rate could shoot up.

Drogba got 11 assists and 12 goals in 2005/6...five assists and 10 goals in his first season 2004/5

fabregas isn't a mourinho player...he is shocking defensively

this deal makes no sense when they have a midfield of ramires matic and oscar, who are all industrious players

I reckon mourinho just wants to piss arsenal off, but then we would have rejected the buy back option which considering our injury problems and the fact that this guy is world class, baffles me...add to that wenger loves fabregas, and everyone wants him back, and wenger also loves buying people in positions we don't necessarily need

      this all makes no sense

Fabregas and Costa are going to be massive. It's more about the belief they will instill in other players and fans, than the effect they have on the league themselves. Ala Ozil for Arsenal in early season.

No one has any evidence to suggest he doesn't want him. Quality players usually find their way into the team regardless. And from an unbiased perspective, Cesc is much disciplined than Mata. So the argument that he isn't a Mourinho type of player is pretty much non backed up imo.

Hard to answer that. Pellegrini won a domestic double in his first year as manager in the premier league. Thats a good accomplishment especially considering the level of injuries City had. The same as Mourinhio did. Not too much between them is there?

Mou is certainly louder than Pelle, Ill give you that.

Very fair point, ok I'll change that to Mou being more accomplished than Pelle, and in my opinion more tactically astute, not that Pelle is a bad manager, I just think Mourinho is tactically spot on more often than not.

Don't get me wrong, I hate Mourinho, but credit where its due!

To be fair Mourinho is more accomplished and is a tactical genius. When City needed Liverpool to drop points there was nobody I would have had more faith in to get the job done than Mourinho. He is excellent at setting up a team for a one off match and getting a result.

In saying that Pelle is a class act and conducts himself very well. Not even a hint of mindgames. His style is far more entertaining to watch aswell.

Both excellent managers. Im looking forward to the matches between them next season.

City Squad is nowhere near as good as Chelsea's except up front.

Chelsea have better goalkeepers, better defense, better def midfield and better attacking midfield imo, all they lacked last year was a cutting edge and their young players ran out of steam

Liverpool agree deal with Bayer Leverkusen for Can

Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle with Bayer Leverkusen to sign 20-year-old Emre Can, subject to documentation being completed.

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can, the club have confirmed.

The Reds have been heavily linked with Can in recent weeks and they have now reached an agreement in principle with Leverkusen to sign the 20-year-old.

Leverkusen wanted to keep the Germany under-21 international but admitted they are powerless to prevent him from moving on after Liverpool met his release clause fee.

The German club's CEO Michael Schade said: "Emre Can has developed very quickly at Bayer 04 Leverkusen over the past twelve months. We wanted to keep Emre at Leverkusen but the release clause is part of his contract. So we wish him all the best and lots of success in his time in the Premier League."

Can, who moved to Leverkusen from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich last summer, scored three times in 29 league outings last term.

I discovered him at University and really like his works, both the Cloths of Heaven and the Second Coming (especially this part ->
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
            The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold) are my favorites. Very vivid imagery.

    Nani: Ronaldo should be fit

Nani believes Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit to lead Portugal’s World Cup campaign in Brazil, despite fears over the former Manchester United star's current fitness.
The Portugal Football Federation have confirmed the Real Madrid forward is suffering with a muscle injury on the back of his left thigh as well as a condition known as jumper's knee.

Ronaldo's absence would represent a major blow to Portugal's chances of reaching the latter stages but Nani insists the FIFA Ballon d'Or winner is relaxed about the situation. The United winger has also played down the impact his pal's potential absence would have on their hopes in Brazil.

“We hope that Cristiano is in good enough shape to play and to help the team,” Nani told reporters at a press conference. “He is going well and he is relaxed about it, things are going the right way. If, for some reason, Ronaldo is not there, whoever is there playing has to be confident in their ability to get the job done.

“The World Cup is a one-of-a-kind challenge,” the Reds winger continued, when pressed on his own ambitions. “I want to be fully fit, and in top form alongside my team-mates. I could not be there last time [in 2010], but happily, I am here now.”
