Our team-by-team coverage of the 32 World Cup qualifiers finally comes to its conclusion with a look at South Korea. Hong Myung-Bo’s side open their campaign against Russia on June 17 at 11pm before a couple of contrasting fixtures – five days later they play outsiders Algeria at 8pm before squaring up to group favourites Belgium at 9pm on Thursday June 26:

Road to Qualification

South Korea finished top of a four-team group that also included Lebanon, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates. Winning four and drawing one of their six fixtures, they scored 14 times and conceded four goals and clinched a spot in the final qualifying AFC group along with Iran, Uzbekistan, Qatar and Lebanon. After winning four and drawing a couple of their subsequent eight games, they finished second and qualified automatically for Brazil 2014 on goal difference alone – scoring 13 goals and conceding on seven occasions, they mustered just two clean sheets to suggest they may struggle to keep out high-calibre opponents this time around.

Most Starts Jung Sung-ryeong (8), Kwak Tae-hwi, Lee Keun-ho (7), Ki Sung-yong, Kim Bo-kyung, Lee Dong-gook (5) Kim Shin-wook, Lee Chung-yong (4)

Most Goals Lee Keun-ho (3), Kwak Tae-hwi, Kim Bo-kyung (2)

The Key Targets

What’s worth noting is that Myung-bo only took the helm last July, so results during qualifying are not a reflection of the team under his guidance. Since the new manager’s installation, though, South Korea have played 12 friendlies with fairly limited success – five wins and six losses, 14 goals for and 16 against, with just a single clean sheet over that run (in the first match against Peru) is not too convincing.

Set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, the Koreans tend to favour a quick counter-attacking approach under Myung-bo. On the flank, the full-backs push up and offer support to the wingers, who look to get in behind opposition defences and seek out late runs from central midfield.

At the back, two of the likely defence are Bundesliga-based for the roles in front of keeper Jung Sung-Ryeong . Augsburg’s Hong Jeong-ho (who sets you back 4.7 in FantasyiTeam) played 16 times in the German top-flight last term and should partner Kim Young-gwon or Kwaj Tae-hwi in the heart of defence, whilst on the left, Mainz’s Park Joo-hoo (4.4 in FantasyiTeam) has turned in some strong displays at club level and is likely to get the nod ahead of Kim Jin-soo, with Lee Yong on the opposite flank.

Providing he’s fully-fit after suffering a knee injury on loan at Sunderland, Swansea’s Ki Sung-yeung is likely to be partnered by a ball-winner such as Park Jung-woo in the double-pivot. Available for only 4.8 in FantasyiTeam, the former’s distribution from deep and penchant for a long shot could boost his points potential and ensures he’s essential to his manager’s plans. On the right, Bolton’s Lee Chung-yong (5.0 in FantasyiTeam) seems a certain starter, whilst another European-based winger, Son Heung-min of Bayer Leverkusen, will take up the opposite flank. Aged just 21, the latter scored 10 times in last term’s Bundesliga campaign and can be snapped up for 5.3 in FantasyiTeam.

The role in “the hole” looks set to be taken by Mainz’Koo Ja-cheol, who was captain of the 2012 Olympic side under Myung-bo. He struggled for form and fitness last term and started just eight league matches in the German top-flight and his Fantasy prospects dented further by the fact he is classified as a forward (priced at 6.1) in the in FantasyiTeam game. Up front, the new manager has turned to Park Chu-young in recent matches despite the Arsenal man’s failure to start a single league match in 2013/14. Having scored in a recent friendly win over Greece in March, he can be acquired for 6.5 in FantasyiTeam.

The Long Shots

Available for 6.3 in FantasyiTeam, Kim Shin-Wook is likely to be “Plan B” late on in games. Standing six foot five, the introduction of his height up front is usually the catalyst for plenty of high balls into the box, with the possibility of Myung-bo even moving to a two-man frontline if needs require a more offensive game plan.

Regarding Billy's post for 2010 points of players on the basis of McD rules...

Didn't we think that defenders will have 5/6+ RBs every game. How come they are so less?

Apparently it's not what you would expect. Not sure what constitutes a RB in the game but they aren't awarded as often as in the Champions League game.

I believe the RBs in CL is just the sum of all clearances, tackles and (maybe) blocks and interceptions. For the McD game only tackles that regain possession and clearances that find a teammate are counted, so merely bombing the ball back to the other keeper isn't rewarded, which I think is better.

1 point for every recovered ball.

To compare, it's 5 points for every goal.

So yeah, I'm going with 5 at the back.

Last World Cup they changed the rules after the World Cup had started to rectify this though. So I may end up going with two teams.

I'm not sure it's not a simple as that...

The maximum RB points a defender got in one game in the WC2010 game was 6, and that game had the same rules...

Apparently they accumulate the RB points very differently than what we're used to with UCL for example...

          Let's see what happens...

25k in the bank to do Suarez to RVP/Super Mario and KDB to Di Maria in GW2

I'm nervous about it but I have fond memories of having the entire Spanish defence in the Euro 2012 knockouts. No goals conceded against France, Portugal and Italy then. Going back 4 years it was a CS after 120 minutes against Netherlands in the last WC final.

Nice set-up there Milan. Midfield price distribution looks spot-on to me (I've gone for Di Maria & Robben over Oscar & Muller, we're a bit spoilt for choice in that bracket). Cuadrado is peerless at that price and one of Bentaleb/Jahanbakbish looks important too...leaves plenty of funds for a decent defence and a killer strike-force.

Thanks Reedy, most of my time spent picking the team was trying to squeeze Di Maria in then I realised I could get him GW2 after Suarez has played Costa Rica 🙂

Some cheap bench players to enable a strong starting XI looks key in this game. Found 3 cheap defenders to help me out.

Yeah pricing allows a very strong team. No way could we get an equivalent team of big hitters at the start of an FPL season.

I have Itandje (110k) who I forgot to put in the RMT as backup keeper and he's first choice for Cameroon according to Parm. De Sciglio would have been a bargain with an easier group but its only the Costa Rica game that looks good for a cleanie.

Good team, aside from the 3rd-5th defenders (110k-120k each) rotating for the 3rd spot I've ignored rotation in favour of the Spaniards. That very nice looking rotation has given you a beefier midfield.

Belgian players are oddly popular in the Fox game. I know they're a good side but the player's aren't bargains. Courtois, Kompany and Hazard are the most owned players in their respective positions and Lukaka is the second most owned striker behind only Neymar.

Lukaka more popular than Messi, WTF

There's a cheap Eastern European left back in the game that gets assists and may be on pens. His name starts with Ko and ends with an arov.

More worrying is their lack of form, they've hardly been setting the world alight. I backed out of the triple up on Belgian players in the Fox game and am now down to just Hazard. Compare their goals per game to Germany's and I think many are backing the wrong horse.

"Others faired better across our leagues. Scout poster “Jafalad” won the McFifa league, and finished 8th in the world, whilst regular poster “Gargamel” also won himself a slice of delicious technology by winning the “ipad league” and claiming 226th place."

Not sure what you mean exactly but basically you have 40 transfers and can use them any time you want, if you bring a player in before their game starts you get the points for them. So if there is three games in one day you can use your transfers swapping players to maximise points.

Husband/Boyfriend's instructions to his Wife/Girlfriend before Fifa 2014 World Cup:

          My Dear,
The Fifa World Cup is close by. Let me give you a few rules that will preserve your beauty atleast till 14th july 2014...

          1. The remote control belongs to me for the whole month.
          2. Tell all your friends not to give birth or wed or die or whatever during the World Cup coz we won't go.
          3. You support the teams that I support.
          4. No talking during the game, wait for half-time or end of the game.
          5. Repeats & highlights are as good as the main match, so am gonna watch them..
          6. We can watch Daily tv soaps provided actors and actresses are wearing football shirts and they are in Brazil.
          7. You don't just pass in front of the TV if i'm watching football, you better crawl on the floor.
          8. Make sure you don't ask silly questions such as- is this Chelsea versus England?
          9. No funny faces to my friends when they come to watch football.
          10. Smile everytime EXCEPT when my team is losing.
11.There shall be no comments about Cristiano Ronaldo's looks. Professionalism shall remain an absolute part of the World Cup.
12.If you miss the line up please don't ask, 'who is that guy?' in between the game.
          13. Ronaldo the Brazilian and Ronaldo the Portuguese are not related, Tanzania and Kenya did not qualify.

                Thanks for the invite Rodeo.

I'll have a look at the game first. Was initially put off by the RBs thingy. But couldn't resist. 😀

I'll let you know in another 50 mins after I have a look if you're around. 🙂

That would really be nice Thomass.

An in depth analysis on the situation is really necessary.
