World class goals, TV commentators, England’s demise and further controversy over the Official FIFA Fantasy game provided the inspiration for this week’s output from the Fantasy Football Scout community. We look back on the notable articles and hot topics produced by you, including the early analysis following the release of the Premier League’s 2014/15 fixtures. As always, we also catch up with the community tournaments currently taking place around the World Cup.

The Community Articles

Yet again this week, there was a batch of community writers on hand to help out with our latest predicted lineups. Advice and tips from Demi, Beavis and Portsmouth Bubblejet, among others, proved invaluable to keeping our list up to date with latest injury and rotation news. We’ll be posting a Matchday Three predicted lineups article next week, no doubt calling on your knowledge and opinion once more.

Fresh from his run of excellent World Cup preview articles, Balotellis Bib showed his talents again, this time running the rule over Matchday One’s games and the lessons we can learn from them. He also posted this look at the Official FIFA Fantasy game’s formation trap, a bugbear that has caught out a number of community members recently.

The Hottest Topics

Many of our hot topics focused on the winners and losers in the World Cup to this point. England inevitably rank amongst the biggest flops and, thanks to back-to-back defeats and Costa Rica’s improbable form, Roy’s boys will be on the golf course earlier than expected. Our discussion attempted to examine where it all went wrong for Hodgson’s men, with Wakey pointing to Leighton Baines failure to deliver successful crosses, while The Tinkerman was adamant that a simple case of failing to take chances cost England dearly.

The Official FIFA Fantasy game must also rank amongst this summer’s big disappointments. Bogged down from the start with confusion, last minute rule changes and an array of infuriating design problems, you’ve been quick to highlight the grips with a string of community posts. Phil Fox 85’s Letter to Fifa was one of the very latest and is undoubtedly one of the most eloquent of this week’s threads on the issues on show.

While the FIFA game’s design has come under fire, the basic premise of offering Fantasy managers more complex rules, with Gameweek squad changes and points for a greater variety of player attributes, still appears to carry plenty of appeal according to many who responded to our discussion last week. Roscola and HamsterGod were among the ranks of those welcoming such new dimensions. Hopefully, in 2018, FIFA will finally deliver a game that couples rich features with a clear ruleset and reliable design and interface.

Across the Fantasy games, one of the winning tactics during the tournament so far has been the investment in in full-backs over centre-backs. With a lack of clean sheets on offer, us Fantasy managers have been relying on the considerable assist potential that the full backs from teams such as Holland and Switzerland have offered, according to Parmtree’s hot topic contribution.

Off the pitch, you’ve also been assessing the quality of the TV coverage on offer, with Gnu’s discussion on the commentators and pundits highlighting a number of abject performers. For MJ6987, the BBC, steered safely by the reliable Gary Lineker, has fared well. ITV’s Adrian Chiles, meanwhile, has been far from convincing in opposition according to the opinion on show. Predictably, Phil Neville’s punditry also took another kicking within the thread, but at least the former Everton man’s performances provided the inspiration for this video, imagining Neville’s commentary dousing the flames of excitement during an episode of Game of Thrones.

Back amongst the comfort of the Premier League, this week saw the release of the 2014/15 fixture list. We were quick to take an early look at the fixtures, revealing that Manchester United players could well be back en vogue very early on, given their obliging start to the campaign.

Meanwhile, Fring pointed out that Chelsea have not been so fortunate. The London side have been handed tough matches after all their Champions League group games and face a nightmarish season run-in, as they visit Arsenal and play host to Manchester United and Liverpool in their final six encounters.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Football Scout takeover of the Fox game has been unprecedented. Going into today’s games, 18 of our league were in the top 50 of the game overall, including the current leader Liam Jones. The Fox FFS Deadzone league is topped by Innsie, while Roscola has a commanding 28-point lead in the Fantasy Football Scout Mods and Contributors Fox league.

Over in our Official FIFA Fantasy game league, Welliott is currently top on 257 points ahead of HenryFarr in second on 253. Welliot is also just 13 points over the overall lead in the chase for the first prize of the Kia Soul motor. The Official FIFA game also plays host to the FFS UEFA’s team competition. The results from Matchday One’s matches can be found here.

Sakho won't play against Ecuador. He has to went off because a little injury against Swiss and Deschamps won't take any risk.

I think there will be a lot of changes but Benz will start for the goal record.

Yep, found out last night by accident. I'll try and explain as best I can

Say you have a 4-4-2 and you want to switch to a 3-4-3 but want to remove the player who's second from the left. You remove that player FIRST, then change your formation and add in the striker you want.

I like C. Portugal decimated by injury and just plain ordinary at the back... Is Pepe still suspended btw..?

And Suarez is immense and with it all to play for, I fancy them to have too much for Italy.

*** FFS UEFA - Greece Camp Review (2 summaries condensed into 1 for obvious reasons)

Greece captain Berbagod's pre-tournament interview took inspiration from the side that won Euro 2004. "The Ancient Gods had blessed our Golden Generation 10 years ago, and it is about time we were bestowed with these heavenly 1-goal match-winning powers again", bellowed Berbagod into his audio recording app while making his best angry face.

Truly enough, Matchday 1 went as expected, with the mighty Hellas stifling favourites Colombia from the very start. Berbacat "Georgios Clooniest" led the charge, taking down an aptly named Major Fail with a 93rd GW1 Rank score of 132, while Colombia equalised with an equally monstrous score of their own, captain Bubz recording a 135.

"Marco Zeus" Solidado, TotalFPL's brightest prodigy, nearly matched captain Berbacat's score, edging his opponent 128 while wildcard JeremeHaliday "ihavethelongestnamepapa" was expectedly beaten 120-105. True to their own prophecy, veteran from the Beach Soccer World Cup, Dadoune, edged his opponent Aatish in injury time, winning 111-104.

*tapes newspaper cutting onto new piece of paper*

Japan weren't going to be underestimated either, despite their 5-0 whitewash by the Ivorians. "Eccentric taste" wasn't an exaggeration of the Japanese' lineups as they rotated positions with the hope of baffling the mighty Hellas.

Captain Berbagod's tie against Iconic FFScout poster Red Lightning was a gimme for the Greeks, but the real surprise came in the Japanese' outfielders who won 2-1 against the Greece midfield. The wily Japanese took advantage of "Biggus Dickus" Discobar's libido as well as JeremeHaliday's inexperience to take the lead 2-1, while Solidado equalised by matching captain Berbagod's score to level the tie at 2-2.

With the fate of this tie within the heavens' hands, fittingly enough Dadoune "Angel Christeas" edged Goalkeeper AZ in injury time, nudging the ball over the line with 5 of his body parts to have Greece sitting top of the group, striking fear into their next opponents, the Ivory Coast.

Not bad, bit tense about my ranking on McD's and Mirror. Feeling a bit weird about the fact that I have TWO 14 pters (Djabou + Enyeama) that I didn't have the balls to field because I had capped Karnezis and I would take a 7 pter off for an Algerian striker.

        Very tense indeed.

If we lose to the Ivorians and Colombia win, we still lose out unfortunately. The tables are poised such that everyone's on equal GD, GF and GA but Greece are on 6 pts while CIV and COL are on 3.

Hey, can I get a little help on my Fox team, please?

My team at the moment is.

    Courtois, (Davari),
    Luiz, Zabaleta, Aurier, (Debuchy, Rodriguez),
    Muller, Robben, Cuadrado, Shaqiri, (Bentaleb),
    Messi (c), Neymar, Benzema.

    100k ITB, 2 FT.

The transfers I have in plan are Zabaleta --> filler (play Debuchy), and Shaqiri --> Oscar.

    What would you suggest?

        It seems to be this

If 2 or more teams in a Group end up on same points, ranking will be determined based on:

        3) points obtained in the matches between the teams concerned

    McDonalds fantasy league so far:
Rule changes after the game has started: Quite simply sucks. Formation changes, less points for midfielders and no safety guard for losing players on the right side of formations must have cost a lot of support for the game in the initial stages. Having gone through a learning curve the last prelim round will be a little fairer but the damage has been done. Djabou cost me 10 points because I was not available to correct my score in time, plumping for Lukaku before bedtime.

I see people asking for advice on the captaincy pick which, indicates to me people still don't understand the rules:

    Am I right in saying:
Pick your team according to date and time; not according to who you fancy.
The same with the Captaincy pick knowing you can move to a later game if your choice fails.
Choose a formation according to replacement players and make sure the players not playing until later are positioned on the right hand side of your formations.
Don't rely on phone apps to make changes as the buttons work intermittently.
Keep an eye on injuries and yellow cards before making substitutions This is critical when at the transfer stages.
Don't waste money on attackers apart from nailed in picks in the next round. I imagine points per buck are heavily weighted to defender budget buys.
Picking the knockout choices should be spread across game dates and times.
Try and buy people who play rather than expensive stars allowing you to substitute more often.

I f I have missed a beat then let me know.

    caring is sharing!

I hear what you say about the right hand side. Only has value keeping your earliest players on the pitch first so you don't miss an opportunity to play everyone playing at different times.

Out of my 23 players, only 4 (Neymar, Cillesen, Cuadrado, Cholevas) are playing in the first 2 days (Groups A-D).
This will bite me in the arse, again. 😐

Anyone with less or equal players?

Less chances for changes so having the bulk of your players at one time might mean some left on the bench.

Not if they're all at the back....

Seriously even if he had 8 players in the final day itself, as long as they are GOOD players, you'll minimise your risk going into the Gameweek....

I wouldn't say it'll BITE you in the arse, but yea having big players on the final day does minimise certain "low points" risks

Yeah, in the first two rounds, wasn't much of a problem.
But now, with two games starting simultaneously, my players will play in a bulk of 5-6 on the last two days.

Well it seems that you'll only hit a snag in the very last game only anyway, so it comes down to how strong your group H players are (or are willing to risk).

You should get a prize for bad luck. If you have a load of players playing on the last day a bit of forethought should have gone into your original selection. I have 8 players.

I have Messi already, but I'm thinking of going with Suarez too.

More central to the goals in his side, whereas Messi is on the wing and 'tina have loads more areas for goals.

I actually like McD's system of not doing any transfers until Knockout and also not being able to see other peoples team..it makes it more interesting!

I think not being able to see other persons team should be applied in FPL as well...because if someone is chasing the leader or if someone if defending he can see their team and predict what the transfer will be that becomes boring..Imagine you're 5 points behind 'X', so both will be wondering who does he have and what should I do..

I have a guy in our FPL H2H, who always checks out the opponents team for the round and then gets in players accordingly. Hiding teams would definitely change that tactic.

It has it's pros and cons, I guess.

Think having no transfers already protects people enough, but this is a rule that only really shines in "7 Gameweek" Fantasy games like the WC.

I'd really, really like to see other teams, though. Adds to the banter

You will have to be a clever bloke to know who managers will rest etc. England though is fairly easy to guess. No Gerard, Baines for sure and Lampard will play his swansong and Barklay will get a start.
