World Cup quarter-final team selections and the tournament’s heroes and villains have hogged the submissions and hot topics generated by the community this week. Back home, the launch of Sky Sports’ Fantasy Game was also discussed, as was the Premier League’s potential hot prospects and weakest links for the season ahead. We recall the key contributions from the community over the past week, whilst also dropping in on the current crop of World Cup tournaments and competitions.

The Community Articles

Preparation for the knockout stages and the weekend’s last eight of the World Cup were the major focus of this week’s submissions. Balotellis Bib was in fine form once again, guiding the community on the key squad selection decisions. He was on hand to look at the major lessons learnt from the group stages and last 16 ties, whilst also provideding this excellent guide to navigating the knockout rounds in the Official FIFA Fantasy game.

Another of our most prolific writers, Daniel Levy 16, also came forward to offer sound advice for those scanning for a bargain in the Official game. His rundown of the best budget goalkeepers and defenders and midfielders provided essential reading as the transfer window swung open.

Each month, we have a £20 Amazon voucher on offer to the author of the best community article as chosen by you. We will launch a Hot Topic to gather your votes and remind you of some of the best of June’s community articles on Monday. The winner will be revealed in next week’s Round-up.

The Hottest Topics

With just the semi finals and finals left to play, many of the World Cup’s heroes and villains have already made themselves known. In answer to Irish Madrista’s call to name the World Cup’s most sensational surprises, DonaldDuckSnr has been impressed with the performances of the Algerian, Costa Rican and Greek outfits, while Siva Mohan was among many to nominate Colombian pair James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado as the tournament’s surprise packages.

Meanwhile, Heydudes13’s hot topic explored the best prospects available at the back in the Official FIFA game, with Holland’s Stefan de Vrij earning special praise. Germany’s last 16 goal hero Andre Schurrle is a favourite of Willis and gained a special mention in our look ahead to the quarter finals clashes.

Elsewhere, Gnu and A SquishyPotato looked at the villainous bunch who have failed to live up to their pre-tournament billing. In Gnu’s assessment of the tournament’s biggest flops, Juan Carlos nominated the entire England team, while Ginkapo placed Spain’s squad at the top of the flop charts. Sheep, meanwhile gave a long list of World Cup 2014 failures, including Wayne Rooney, Leighton Baines and Eden Hazard. ASquishyPotato’s World Cup disappointment XI included Steven Gerrard, as well as Ecuador skipper and United winger, Antonia Valencia.

For DHWizzo the entire Brazil squad have been a let down. In one of the week’s most popular posts, he explained his argument for avoiding their assets in the closing rounds, particularly their suspect defence. For those wanting to find more evidence of World Cup heroics and villainy, Jared Mason’s excellent player statistics for the Official FIFA Fantasy game will prove interesting reading.

The community was also in nostalgic mood this week, taking time out to look back and name some of their favourite ever World Cup goals. Maradona’s second strike against England in the Mexico World Cup of 1986 was the top choice for Aaron Ramessi among others. Meanwhile, our resident quizmaster The Fantasy Freak, looked back fondly at Papa Bouba Diop’s shock winner against France in 2002.

Domestic football issues are creeping into the community’s thoughts and this week saw us assess the field of the new Premier League recruits. Evs and D1sable were among those to predict a successful Premier League return for Chelsea’s new midfielder and former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas. Sherlock Holmes, however, foresee’s a poor debut season for another new Chelsea arrival, Diego Costa.

This week also saw the early launch of the Sky Sports Game, which, this season, includes the addition of a new 3-4-3 formation, along with at testing player price list. Croatia Deserves More Mata and Zepinho were among those to find the player values restrictive. Gigging Order, who topped the Sky component of last season’s Iron Man community tournament, stated that, given the tough pricing, 3-5-2 may well be the formation of choice.

Finally, Irish Madridsta started one of our longest ever discussion threads when he asked for the community’s favourite movie-title and footballer crossovers. There followed an epic multi-page run of some of the most ludicrous movie based puns around, with Applebonkers’ The Quantum of Rod Wallace, Billy Gilmore’s Finding Neymar and Bubz’s 2001 A Space Odemwingie among the many highlights from more than a dozen pages of cinematic word play. The puns flowed at such a rate that The Fantasy Freak even had to abandon his regular pre-match quiz.

The Community Tournaments

Following the quarter final matches an impressive 22 of our Fox league members are in the top 50 of the overall rankings. With 425 points our league leader, Alba Esque, is third overall. Arvin United leads the Fox FFS Deadzone league, while Roscola continues to dominate the Fox moderators and contributors league.

Ceac90 tops the Scout League in the McDonald’s backed Official World Cup game: he also sits fifth in the overall ranks, just five points off the summit.

Lambert, Origi, Markovic, Lallana, Can, all good players that'll add some depth to the Liverpool side, but none of them are anywhere near the calibre of Suarez, all five of them put together won't get 31 goals a season let alone a single individual.
Liverpool should be making bigger signings than that if they really want to improve.

Origi a terrible signing? I've been impressed with him at the world cup. Quick and strong with a bit of talent. Needs a lot of work on his end product, but he's only 19, a year spent loaned out at Lille and we might have a good player on our hands

But signing based on national performance is never smart, as I say above 5 goals in 29 for Lille. Loan him out certainly but Pool don't have the money to be buying players they don't intend to use this season. I understand punting on potential but when that becomes your only transfer policy it concerns me.

I'd say however he turns out he's unlikely to go down in value as he's young and Belgian, so its not a huge risk of a transfer.

Chelsea have been doing it for years, buying players, loaning them out and selling for a profit if they don't find a place in the first team.
De Bruyne didn't work out and was sold for £18m!

              But I've heard he'll cost €14 million...

Yes but Chelsea have the business model to back this up, Liverpool are making a£50 million loss every year. As well as this, they need to solidify in order to stay in the CL but this isn't solidifying...

Apparently up to £10m depending on performance which isn't a huge amount.

I'd say this sort of transfer is a good thing if it doesnt impact the rest of our transfer business. If signing Origi resulted in us not being able to afford a top target it would obviously be a bad idea, but as a future player he is young and only going to get better.

If he were Suarez' replacement i'd be critical of the transfer, but as he's being loaned straight back to his current club thats clearly not the case so I don't see the problem

As a winger of a team playing ultra-defensive tactics (finished 3rd, scored tied 9th most, 4 on them on last round), in his second season (in his first he entered the game at late minutes in 10 matches) at end of which he turned 19, and only 12 of those matches were starts.

Buying based on World Cup or EC is, I agree, not wise, and I also agree that Origi is not yet ready to step in Suarez's shoes, but cut the kid some slack, he played a very promising season, actually a good season, being one of the better forwards in the team.

Key word is promising. It's all promising. All of them are promising. I have nothing against him, I love seeing young talent but he's not ready for the PL yet at all. So he needs to be loaned out but Pool don't have that luxury just yet. I would hate to see them regress. Origi has a future but Pool need to stop thinking of 4 or 5 years down the road and start thinking of next season.

He already plays very well, is clearly a talented boy. That's what they pay for: good now, promises of much better. If Origi played like Suarez already, they'd pay €100M for him.

Whether it's a wise buy for Liverpool is another thing. I don't quite grasp their business model. Nor their sportive project.

And he is a talented boy definitely but it is based on fitting into the club's model and I agree, I dying understand it.

It's like the Markovic and Shaqiri stuff, they also wanted Sanchez, I know they wouldn't sign all of them but including Lallana that's an awful lot of wingers to be talking with.

I don't really say anything about what's good for Liverpool. All I'm saying is that it's unfair to slate 18-19 year-old boys playing on the flank for not topping scoring charts.

I'm not saying topping at all, just if they expect him to score goals/assist if they don't loan him out. As I say, not really slating his ability.

But I concede terrible sounds harsh. I mean terrible based on the club's current situation, he'd be a good signing for a club that can afford to spend the money and loan him out until he's developed more.

Liverpool haven't shown any interest in Higuain, so I can't see that happening.

      RVP - 13
      Bony - 9
      Lovren - 5.5 (All Liverpool's defs at 5.5 I reckon, like Arsenal's last season)
      Fabregas - 9.5
      Shaw - 5.5/6

Isnt that the point in Lambert though? Obviously not a straight up match winner, but could hold his own. Ive seem Higuain twice against Arsenal, twice against Swansea, this world cup and numerous times for Real Madrid, and he is overrated.

Realistically need 4 strikers to compete - United have had that for a long time

Higuain is just an option, many others of course. Lfc need a player of high calibre

I'd be happy with Sturridge new signing Lambert Borini as our strikers

Sorry for what's likely a stupid question
In McD's can you sub a player out in the middle of the game and bring a player into the game who hasn't played yet?
For example, if Robben gets a red card can I substitute him for Depay in the middle of the game?

Luiz is on the set pieces now with Neymar out. Yes, I think Brazil CB's will get a good amount of blocks/RBs.

Mertasacker might've been sick. I think he'll start next game. You'll get to see the line ups before the deadline.
