There was panic among the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as pre-season bandwagons de-railed and the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price changes became even more difficult to predict. We look back on the reaction to these events, along with some of the week’s top contributions, including some further number-crunching from our community contributors. Elsewhere, we catch up on the latest custom statistics tables created by our members and the runners and riders in the various community tournaments.

The Community Articles

With two weeks’ worth of statistics at their disposal, our community writers felt confident enough to wave goodbye to some early-season punts and follow some new leads.

Stoke City’s mercurial forward Bojan Krkic started the season surrounded by plenty of hype following an impressive pre-season, earning him a handsome ownership level. Sadly, he’s struggled to come to terms with expectations and has failed to make an impression for Mark Hughes’ men, disappointing an army of Fantasy managers. Aussie Pundit was amongst them, leading him to create this article offering an in-depth analysis of the Spaniard and the Fantasy conundrum he’s posed.

The Puntmaster was on hand to offer an immediate solution to Bojan issue – he urged us to take a closer look at West Ham’s Mauro Zarate as a tailor-made replacement as part of three punts going into Gameweek 3 – the latest instalment of his excellent regular article.

Elsewhere, Arvination was another to highlight the talents of Zarate, although the focus of his his round-up of the weekend’s best punts was most definitely Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.

As ever, our number-crunching experts have been busily generating new theories with the data at their disposal. Red Lightning has been looking in detail at the measurement of points per 90 minutes, while Rab Mac brought us news of a team and player spreadsheet he’s developed to help Fantasy managers get to grips with the latest statistics.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

There was widespread panic amongst Fantasy managers this week with the realisation that the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seemed to have tweaked the values that govern the player price changes – leading to some expected results. With less information available and seemingly fewer price falls taking place, Dr Funk wondered whether casual managers will benefit at the expense of veteran managers who have based their strategies on monitoring movement in the market.

That unwelcome development has compounded an uncertain opening to the campaign, with a wide array of options and no cast-iron captaincy contender on offer. AA7’s Hot Topic captured the issue perfectly, as he underlined the bewildering amount choice available, particularly in the key attacking roles.

With panic setting in, it’s far too easy to make rash decisions and, with that in mind, Harrysponge invited the community to look back at the best and worst 11th-hour alterations from the opening weekend of the season.

Talking of rash decisions, last week we witnessed Berbinho’s Forehead and Rayne Wooney’s foolhardy and unpleasant pair of pledges should Liverpool complete the signing of a certain Mario Balotelli. This week it was John Barnes’ turn to make a promise he’d regret: he was so keen to see Stevan Jovetic score a brace last week that he swore to captain the Manchester City striker every week for the rest of the season if he could achieve that feat. The Montenegrin duly delivered against Liverpool, leaving John Barnes banking on a few more braces as the season progresses.

There’s nothing like a trip down memory lane to calm the nerves and anxiety and, fortunately, Leicester’s unlikely signing of Esteban Cambiasso offered us the opportunity for nostalgia as we looked back on other legends who have arrived in the Premier League in their twilight years.

There was further serenity among UFPL managers who are busily completing their Transfer Window selection. A timely contribution from Goonerbyron provided an invaluable list of the teams playing on Matchdays 2 and 3 for those still tinkering those long-term plans.

The Members Tables

Over in the members area, Jesus Navas My Lord has been taking an in-depth look at the underlying stats of attacking full-backs, a group that is thought to be favoured by a change in the Fantasy Premier League bonus calculations this summer. His Bertrand v Clyne table focuses on final third touches among this group, while he has also cast his gaze on the attacking threat of Chelsea’s defenders.

Arvin-ation has been another prolific table builder this week, looking at a comparison between Dzeko and Jovetic, Bojan Krkic replacements and Gameweek 2’s most attacking players in defence and higher up the pitch.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how these work.

The Community Tournaments

In TorresMagic‘s”Last Man Standing” competition, Chrissy Waddle’s 85 was the top score in Gameweek 2, where 102 teams were eliminated, leaving 1502 to progress.

”The Dead Team Challenge”, in which managers selected a team and captaincy in Gameweek 1 that has to remain in place until the end of the season, saw Medo_Je climb to the top of the leaderboard after Gameweek 2’s matches. He scored 142 points in the first two Gameweeks of the competition that has been organised by Zep.

Elsewhere, Kalmoffit won the Gameweek 2 “Scout Picks Challenge”, the competition organised by @ofcprodigy that is loosely based on our Scout Picks. Overall in the competition Lionel’s Messy Boxers and IniestaFiesta are joint top.

In AZ’s “Early Bird FFS Cup” the group leaders ahead of Gameweek 3 were Doosra, Pundit of Punts, Baines on Toast, AZ, Acquafresca, Costa – The Chosen One, cmonster and NTFM.

With the international break, our search for a Gameweek 4 community champion will start on Monday 8 September. Watch out for a hot topic that day when we will be asking for nominations and votes for those wishing to follow Tom Fenley, HVT and Innsie as your champion.

for the record, I did captain Jovetic this gw, and I will be captaining him next gw - whilst praying he doesn't play so my vice captain can cash in the points. 😀

Unfortunately for Remy he will have to get used to warming the bench. I'm surprised he was happy to go to Chelsea.

You'd think in his prime he would want to be a first teamer. Maybe he feels Drogba will only be used as an impact player from the bench and that he's only a Costa knock away from getting a starting berth in a championship challenging side.

      ::::: Dead Team Challenge - GW3 Leaderboard Updated :::::

Congratulations to our current leaders, Kerrazy & Michudagawd who are on an impressive 198pts each, which equates to an Overall rank of 2k... 😯 not bad for a dead team...

Highest scorer in the GW was Canadian Football with 82pts (honourable mention to AZ on 81pts)... which would have given him a weekly rank of 2k... 😯 just goes to show that sometimes making no transfers is the best option... 😐

From a technology/security perspective it seems likely that FPL simply forgot to renew their SSL license/certificate, and that old certificate is still being used. Since it does log you in into.FPL correctly it should be fine to use for now.

If it was redirecting you to users.fantasypremierleague.com...or some other fake URL I'd be concerned. Hackers can't create a fake page on a subdomain. Nothing fishy here that I can see.

Just a certificate issue. Firefox is basically saying "I don't know about this website, so I'm telling you to be careful". Obviously we know the site very well, and that it is safe to continue 😉

        Don't worry about it

I got that this morning too. Apparently the solution is to update your date and time in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.

It is supposed to give this message if it thinks your time is more than 15 hours different from what it expects. My time was correct, but I just changed the time by an hour and then put it back to the original value, and it appears to be working fine again now.

For those of you(like me) that are worried about the "security issue" with the FPL site...if your FFS profile is linked to your FPL team then you can click on your link and access your team without the "security message".

Just another reason to link your team on FFS.

Predicted Price Rises from last night: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/08/31/the-community-round-up-56/?hc_page=13#hc_comment_8159927

        Actual Risers:

        Sigurdsson
        Costa
        Dyer
        Sterling
        Weimann
        Dier

        Actual Fallers:

        Eriksen
        Brady
        Campbell
        Baines
        Osman
        Boyd
        Varela
        Remy
        Shelvey
        Sidwell
        Canas
        Keane
        Suso
        Meyler

After 2 days it's already pretty apparent it's near impossible to analyse these and be able to draw any real meaning from it. While all sites did correctly predict the Costa rise the rises for Sigurdsson, Weimann and Dier came out of no where with no site predicting them. Sterling was also highly unlikely (only one site had him, and that was only in 90-100) and Dyer was only 100% to rise on 1 site, although another did have him between 90 and 100.

        Risers:

        TFPL - 33%
FPLStats - 50% (they only predicted two risers however)
        FISO - 50% (As above)

Alternative percentages for FPLStats and FISO (Since far more players rose than they predicted):

        FPL Stats ~ 17%
        FISO ~ 17%

Fallers was again all over the place, FPL Stats was the best again but only at around 50% and while both TFPL and FISO drastically reduced the number of players they thought would drop it didn't do their accuracy much good.

        Fallers:

        TFPL: ~25%
        FPLStats: ~50%
        FISO: ~17%

Realistically I don't think there's much point me doing this every day. It's going to take a while longer for the new algorithm to be worked out and then all the flaws to work their way through the system. I might do it once more tonight then give it a few weeks before seeing if they really are getting any closer.

From the VERY small sample set there is it seems TFPL are best for risers and FPLStats best for drops although you could hardly call either reliable.

        Best of luck fellow wildarders!

The problem is not the algorithm, it is that they have been cut off from the key data source they used to use. I was praising FISO a day or two the data source was removed for being already almost on the money this year. They pretty much had the algorithm nailed. Then it all went wrong.

Forgive me, but I would also contend your percentages are misplaced too. I think you acknowledge this, but don't follow it through to its logical conclusion. Yes, they got 1 out of 2 risers correct - Costa, but not Guzan (or 2 out of 3 if you count Dyer), but that's only half the prediction. For example, 6 players increased in price last night, but FISO only predicted 2 (technically it was only 1, but as Dyer was within 0.5% I would give them that too). That's 33%.

There's 7 players who either rose in FPL or were predicted to rise by FISO and they were right on 2 (Dyer and Costa). That's 28.6%. If you don't give them Dyer, it's 1 from 7 or 14.3%.

The FISO team did great work, but the knowledge that powered it (and others) is not currently there. I would not rely on these sites at the minute.

Just some thoughts over the weekend:

Rooney will manage ten goals and assists over the season.
MAN CITY COVERAGE IS NECESSARY despite their defeat. They will definitely finish in the top 4.
SPURS COVERAGE IS NOT NECESSARY. They haven't played so well thus far, (lucky to beat us) and again they have their issues against the bigger sides.
There seem to be a lot of good option strikers who are performing in the 5.0-6.0 bracket. At least there are much more than those in the 6.5-8.0. In the lower bracket: Naismith, Chamakh, Weimaan, Berahino, Ulloa, Jelavic, Agbonlahor. In the higher bracket Pelle is the only striker to score a goal.
The same theme can be seen across the defence where the only player who costs more than 5.5+ and is in the top 10 scoring defenders is Ivanovic.
From this it seems to suggest that we should spend our money, mainly across the midfielders with 3 of the top 5 scoring midfielders being 8.5+..

10 goals for rooney? A career low, that is just ignorant. Why did you ever buy him than?

My lowest hope of him over the course of the season. I expect him to get 17+ goals.
