The Community Round Up

There was panic among the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as pre-season bandwagons de-railed and the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price changes became even more difficult to predict. We look back on the reaction to these events, along with some of the week’s top contributions, including some further number-crunching from our community contributors. Elsewhere, we catch up on the latest custom statistics tables created by our members and the runners and riders in the various community tournaments.

The Community Articles

With two weeks’ worth of statistics at their disposal, our community writers felt confident enough to wave goodbye to some early-season punts and follow some new leads.

Stoke City’s mercurial forward Bojan Krkic started the season surrounded by plenty of hype following an impressive pre-season, earning him a handsome ownership level. Sadly, he’s struggled to come to terms with expectations and has failed to make an impression for Mark Hughes’ men, disappointing an army of Fantasy managers. Aussie Pundit was amongst them, leading him to create this article offering an in-depth analysis of the Spaniard and the Fantasy conundrum he’s posed.

The Puntmaster was on hand to offer an immediate solution to Bojan issue – he urged us to take a closer look at West Ham’s Mauro Zarate as a tailor-made replacement as part of three punts going into Gameweek 3 – the latest instalment of his excellent regular article.

Elsewhere, Arvination was another to highlight the talents of Zarate, although the focus of his his round-up of the weekend’s best punts was most definitely Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.

As ever, our number-crunching experts have been busily generating new theories with the data at their disposal. Red Lightning has been looking in detail at the measurement of points per 90 minutes, while Rab Mac brought us news of a team and player spreadsheet he’s developed to help Fantasy managers get to grips with the latest statistics.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

There was widespread panic amongst Fantasy managers this week with the realisation that the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seemed to have tweaked the values that govern the player price changes – leading to some expected results. With less information available and seemingly fewer price falls taking place, Dr Funk wondered whether casual managers will benefit at the expense of veteran managers who have based their strategies on monitoring movement in the market.

That unwelcome development has compounded an uncertain opening to the campaign, with a wide array of options and no cast-iron captaincy contender on offer. AA7’s Hot Topic captured the issue perfectly, as he underlined the bewildering amount choice available, particularly in the key attacking roles.

With panic setting in, it’s far too easy to make rash decisions and, with that in mind, Harrysponge invited the community to look back at the best and worst 11th-hour alterations from the opening weekend of the season.

Talking of rash decisions, last week we witnessed Berbinho’s Forehead and Rayne Wooney’s foolhardy and unpleasant pair of pledges should Liverpool complete the signing of a certain Mario Balotelli. This week it was John Barnes’ turn to make a promise he’d regret: he was so keen to see Stevan Jovetic score a brace last week that he swore to captain the Manchester City striker every week for the rest of the season if he could achieve that feat. The Montenegrin duly delivered against Liverpool, leaving John Barnes banking on a few more braces as the season progresses.

There’s nothing like a trip down memory lane to calm the nerves and anxiety and, fortunately, Leicester’s unlikely signing of Esteban Cambiasso offered us the opportunity for nostalgia as we looked back on other legends who have arrived in the Premier League in their twilight years.

There was further serenity among UFPL managers who are busily completing their Transfer Window selection. A timely contribution from Goonerbyron provided an invaluable list of the teams playing on Matchdays 2 and 3 for those still tinkering those long-term plans.

The Members Tables

Over in the members area, Jesus Navas My Lord has been taking an in-depth look at the underlying stats of attacking full-backs, a group that is thought to be favoured by a change in the Fantasy Premier League bonus calculations this summer. His Bertrand v Clyne table focuses on final third touches among this group, while he has also cast his gaze on the attacking threat of Chelsea’s defenders.

Arvin-ation has been another prolific table builder this week, looking at a comparison between Dzeko and Jovetic, Bojan Krkic replacements and Gameweek 2’s most attacking players in defence and higher up the pitch.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how these work.

The Community Tournaments

In TorresMagic‘s”Last Man Standing” competition, Chrissy Waddle’s 85 was the top score in Gameweek 2, where 102 teams were eliminated, leaving 1502 to progress.

”The Dead Team Challenge”, in which managers selected a team and captaincy in Gameweek 1 that has to remain in place until the end of the season, saw Medo_Je climb to the top of the leaderboard after Gameweek 2’s matches. He scored 142 points in the first two Gameweeks of the competition that has been organised by Zep.

Elsewhere, Kalmoffit won the Gameweek 2 “Scout Picks Challenge”, the competition organised by @ofcprodigy that is loosely based on our Scout Picks. Overall in the competition Lionel’s Messy Boxers and IniestaFiesta are joint top.

In AZ’s “Early Bird FFS Cup” the group leaders ahead of Gameweek 3 were Doosra, Pundit of Punts, Baines on Toast, AZ, Acquafresca, Costa – The Chosen One, cmonster and NTFM.

With the international break, our search for a Gameweek 4 community champion will start on Monday 8 September. Watch out for a hot topic that day when we will be asking for nominations and votes for those wishing to follow Tom Fenley, HVT and Innsie as your champion.

I'd rather a cheaper forward for Sturridge and a premium mid for Lamela. Also try to limit yourself to only one 4.0 defender

Sturridge not worth the investment..get Naismith instead...use the funds..to upgrade defense (Ivan in hot form)...lacks City as well...so maybe get Dzeko instead of Sturridge...

But once you're 80-100 points back and your opponents have a settled team with the performers they got in early, you'll struggle to come back. Just my experience.

Get on a level playing field early is my advice.

we dont really have that many must have guys at the moment that warrant a waste of a WC especially if he has 2 fts, that team is fixable with 3 moves

Not in my opinion. I think with a wildcard he can improve the following players:

Migs + non-playing keeper (if gonna do this, maybe get Courtois only)

                    Cahill, Jones,

                    Silva, Lamela,

                    Wickham + Riviere

                    Plus a weak bench.

Even Rooney is questionable when you consider how many better options there are.

That's 8 players i'd have nowhere near my team. Sorry, just my opinion. It's a weak team.

Thanks but I'm not gonna panic and do WC...

Migs has good fixtures coming..he kept a CS against Tottenham...Courtois conceded 3 goals against Everton...

Cahill --> Ivan maybe..but Chelsea can get CS points..
Jones got a CS and United will get stronger defensively...

Silva is unselfish..so I will remove him..I can remove Lamela next week as well there is no emergency..

Wickham and Riviere are going out have 2FTs...

Rooney is Rooney..when United starts to play well he will get points..

You say panic, i say logic. Each to their own. To compare keepers on the back of one game is myopic in the extreme.

Also, 'when United starts to play well' is in itself a risky prediction. Can you afford to wait? Their 'easy' fixtures are soon done and against the big boys do you see them banging them in? Much like do you see Jones keeping cleanies?

                        Not for me.

Now go check fixtures for Liverpool, United, and for Chelsea in the next 3 games. All of those defenses will get at least some CS, and both Cahill and Jones are possible attacking point getters. I dont get you saying you have to get Cahill out, but you suggest to get Cortois, as it is always better to have playing defenders for big teams since they get more attacking returns. Lamela has 3 good games coming up as well, he has showed some potential, not a must ditch especially as he has Sterling who seems like the main mid to have.

So That leaves just ditch the 3 front men into maybe Siggy, Costa, Naismith. On the bench a lot of people have Moore, and Albrighton, cheap guys are not an issue especially at the back as in the start defensive returns are not consistant anyway

and I get Rooney hate, but with the fixture against the whipping boys so far he is at least playable, some idiots might even C

No, what i said is, if you're going to go the one-playing + non-playing keeper, Courtois is your best bet, because in the long term i believe Chelsea will keep more clean sheets.

What i mean is, that there are better options than Cahill, and there are most certainly better options that Jones. People still talking about United's great fixtures, but they've lost against Swansea and drawn against Burnley and Sunderland. Their defence is weak as shyt, and they have a gaping hole n midfield.

Dont they have the same amount of CS as chelsea??? And if you are talking long term than why must he use WC when things are better short term and he can fix problems as they come. No matter how shht United are, they will get something in the next games especially as many players should be back after the international break. Considering defensive returns are inconsistant in the beginning of the season, it is not smart to even waste transfers in defense in the beginning of the season.

Not really. I'm not saying it's impossible, but as we've seen already, there are certain performers for the season who have already carried form into this season and will likely be consistent. He's gone with two punts up front who play for bottom half clubs, and risky picks in Jones, Lamela and a weak defence.

                    It's not a good team.

I never suggested that you have the same. I figure that much is obvious. The point was to get players on at least a level playing field. Riviere, Jones, Wickam and the like, are very much not going to be very competitive in the long haul. There are tons of options this year in every department.

    Morning DZ,

    Current team:

    Krul Foster
    Terry Jones PvA Chester Moore
    Eriksen Sterling Ramsey Siggy Marney
    Rooney Costa Bony

    1 FT, 0.3 ITB

Did Mata to Sterling last night, thinking of doing the following over the course of the international break, barring no injuries.

    Terry -> Ivanovic
    Eriksen -> Fabregas
    Bony -> Naismith

This translated to a -8 hit and 1.6 ITB

    How's this?

You're right, one of the FFS commandments is to never transfer in a defender for a hit.

Ivanovic's attacking statistics just make the hit seem so tantalising arghhh.

I can afford a 7.5 striker if I can keep my mitts off Ivanovic and retain Terry.

Pelle seems the obvious choice given Soton's fixtures hmm.

    Important here lads...

When I attempt to log into FPL, I get a major security warning saying that the sites security has expired or summat.

Sounds like hackers are after me and us?

Once before my laptop was hacked through either this site or FPL.

From a technology/security perspective it seems likely that FPL simply forgot to renew their SSL license/certificate, and that old certificate is still being used. Since it does log you in into.FPL correctly it should be fine to use for now.

This is a personal opinion I am.not.an IT profrssional.

If it was redirecting you to users.fantasypremierleague.com...or some other fake URL I'd be concerned. Hackers can't create a fake page on a subdomain. Nothing fishy here that I can see.

Just a certificate issue. Firefox is basically saying "I don't know about this website, so I'm telling you to be careful". Obviously we know the site very well, and that it is safe to continue 😉

      Don't worry about it

I got that this morning too. Apparently the solution is to update your date and time in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.

It is supposed to give this message if it thinks your time is more than 15 hours different from what it expects. My time was correct, but I just changed the time by an hour and then put it back to the original value, and it appears to be working fine again now.

Yes, and then captain Costa home to Swans.

Team is pretty much set then. Early hits are fine to get the team right.

Later Kolorov to a 4.5 makes Marney into 5.5. But some just love Kolorov regardless!!!

I loved Kolarov enough to captain him but I guess it didnt matter as his two matched the scores of most everyone in my team, sounds like a good plan and I think i'll be ready to part with Kolarov pretty soon at this rate. Still a bit hesitant on Fletcher > Naismith but Ill probably do it in the end

    Krul (Foster)
    Terry Jones Clyne (Chambers Moore)

    Jovetic-

Total trasfers out this gw- 42,638

    Net NTO - Around 15k.

QPR plot Aaron Lennon transfer from Tottenham and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson swoop on deadline day.

Armed with the money from selling Loic Remy, Harry Redknapp is also looking to land either Spurs' Sandro or West Ham's Mo Diame for central midfield.

Disappointing to hear about the Sigthorsson news but I've heard its only speculation atm. It'd be disappointing to see him leave, loved to watch him at Ajax

Its time he moved on from Stoke. He's a very talented CB and deserves his chance to play for a bigger club.

Yaya looked very lively against Stoke and should have scored but didn't. Should I take a hit to get rid of him and for whom? I already have Sterling, Ramsey in the prime mids bracket. Fab maybe? Worth a hit?

It will be the first time I remember when I will not play my WC in GW3. Theo game is strange sometimes. With no City cover, 9 players away from home, I was expecting a score in the 40s. I lucked out on Clyne's assist plus Chambers cleansheet that has pushed me into the top 10k. The latter was a fine farewell gift as I will get rid before GW4.

There is something to be said from sitting on one's hand 🙂

Had Lovren since GW1 primarily for that reason. Not super confident they will keep a lot of cleansheets but based on Gerrards comments post-match, it's certainly something they are focusing on. So yes, if I didn't have any cover, I would get some in.

It's all relative. 5.3 is decent value compared to 4.0. player you'll only find in teams who'll ship a ton of goals.
