Election fever gripped the community this week in its search for a Scout Picks champion in what proved to be the closest contest yet. We look back on that campaign, whilst also checking in on the activity surrounding the frantic deadline day dash Ultimate Fantasy Premier League managers faced. Elsewhere, we revisit a love letter for Leighton Baines and consider the balance of perception versus reality. As ever, we throw in all the latest members tables, hottest topics and hear news of a new team-based quiz taking place soon.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 4 proved was pivotal for those playing the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game as the transfer window closed and managers made their final squad changes before January. Loans are still available up to then, but may not be needed if managers can get their selection right. Luckily QPR Expects Glory was on hand with this excellent guide to picking the right UFPL players for the next few months.

This weekend’s matches were also important for those looking for key differentials. The Puntmaster is proving quite the soothsayer with his regular trio of gambles and this week Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was among those coming into sharp focus in his crystal ball for Gameweek 4. Arvin-ation is another regular “punter” and offered up a trio of midfield options ahead of Gameweek 4.

With 15 % ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, Leighton Baines is hardly a differential. Christina argued, though, that his ownership ought to be higher. Here’s his passionate defence of the Everton man who repaid the faith with a strong haul in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, AZ took a look at the promoted teams’ defences to see if any budget friendly differential defenders had emerged as enticing prospects.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

As British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond took part in some frantic last-minute campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, we had our very own dramatic battle on the hustings. In our tightest contest yet to find a community champion for our Gameweek Scout Picks, Arvin-ation prevailed over rival Doosra by a nail-biting 105-104 votes. This was our biggest poll yet, with the community offering up 20 candidates to choose from. Watch out on Monday when the morning’s daily hot topic will launch the search for a Gameweek 5 community champion.

There was more campaigning against homophobia in football this week by the charity Stonewall. It has been urging footballers to show their support for their campaign by wearing rainbow laces. Thanks to the efforts of Tinkerman, our community also showed their support for the campaign by adopting a range of brightly coloured Gravatar images.

Facer chipped in with another of the week’s popular posts – our resident injury expert correctly assessed that Aaron Ramsey would shake off his injury and start.

Diego Costa was, of course, another player to recover from an injury doubt for Gameweek 4 – with devastating effect Pepin pointed out that, with such a high ownership, his hat-trick this weekend presents the season with its first game-changing moment, particularly for those that captained the Chelsea striker. Why is Pardew for Kinnear took this issue further, showcasing how a raft of highly owned, high scoring players, also including Cesc Fabregas, have the potential to ruin the season.

Impressed by QPR Expects Glory’s guide to the UFPL transfer day, 7 Shades of Smoke consulted his abacus to come up with this detailed look at where the smart money should be invested in the game. This will be worth looking back on in January when the transfer window reopens.

Finally, we asked to what extent perception clouds our sense of reality over a player’s potential. Inspired by a raft of posts critical of Danny Welbeck’s goal-scoring ability, despite statistics showing he is one of the Premier League’s most accurate strikers, we asked which other players cause a blind spot. For Goonerbyron, Yaya Toure remains a no-go zone, while for Athletico Timbo, Mario Balotelli is a player he remains reluctant to recruit; the showing against Villa certainly backed his stance.

The Members Tables

My goals imminent table, which seeks to predict potential goal-scorers based on goal attempts so far, claimed a couple of notable victories this weekend after correctly anticipating strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Pelle. Members are urged to keep a close eye on this table during the week to gain an insight into Gameweek 5’s under-the-radar potential high scorers.

Elsewhere in the members area Saintkeratinsins constructed this interesting look at the most attacking midfielders so far this season based on attempts on goal. Goal threat was also a focus for Burdinho in his look at the key performance indicators for forwards, midfielders and defenders.

Shots in the box remains the key criteria for assessing attacking potential for Banana Shaquiri, meanwhile Sk42ers looked at more negative attributes of strikers by delving into indicators such as bad touches and big chances missed.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Freak dropped in to bring us news of an intriguing new team-based quiz competition he has planned. More details can be found here. Meanwhile, to take part in discussion on another team-based competition, the FFS UEFA group’s Hockey World Cup, please visit their dedicated competition article here.

Lads, spewing I went with ballo after saying that I would go with Pelle replace studge!

Should I make the switch now for a FT?

I already have Sterling and I think that might be enough LFC cover for now!
Really think Pelle could be amazing value (as I was saying before I went back on my word)

    Thanks in advance!

    Krul // Elliot
    Clyne // Dummett // Hutton // PvA // Wisdom
    Albrighton // Cesc // Ramsey // Sig // Sterling
Aguero // Diego Costa // Rooney

    WC = Used
    Bank = 0.1
    FT = 2

Want rid of Albrighton & Dummett... Would you:

    A) Dummett > Duff (save 1FT)
    B) Albrighton > Boyd (save 1FT)

LvG said he will move Rojo to CB when Shaw returns. It was a recent interview. He was basically saying that Blackett won't play once Shaw is back.

Interesting. The side would certainly look better with Shaw in there instead of Blackett. Will be interesting to see who the other starters will be, Jones can obviously play as a RB as well.

    Green Forster
    Dier Iva Clyne Caulker Wisdom
    Sigi Fab Sterling Ramsey Rodwell
    Naismith Rooney Costa
    £0.4ITB and 1FT
1st post and guessing im pretty template around here, but wondering if its worth Ramsey and Naismith out for -4 to Chadli (or similar price) and Pelle for the next 3 GWs?
Im planning on WC in the next Int. break when i can re jig things accordingly for the months coming, but are these transfers gonna pay off between now and then?

No I don't think that trade is necessary. I don't think it will improve your team much and its really a bit of a kneejerk reaction. I'd consider saving a transfer actually unless one of your starting players has a tough fixture that you'd rather not play them in this week.

      1. Durr

        Thanks,
I can see why its a bit kneejerky this early on, and tbh im happy playing 3 4 3 this week dropping Rodwell and obvs playing the rest.
I just see spurs running riot at WBA and would like some cover there and see Chadli as the best way of doing that, and obvs after this week Naismith has 2 hard games and see Pelle outscoring him in that time, but I am worried by Ramseys potential every game and missing that.

You have to look beyond 1 GW though. Spurs have a couple of tricky games in the next 4 so they are by no means essential. Ramsey meanwhile has bean steadily getting points and surely doesn't deserve to be dropped. I think saving up for 2FT's next week is the way to go, it will afford you more flexibility to make changes and imo you don't have anything urgent to do this week.

Yh nothing urgent and suppose planning a WC never works well esp with the TV not rising much this season, even tho im upto almost 102m......
I suppose im just looking for differentials in these weeks to push and jump me up in my main ML
            Thanks for the advise

Ok Final thoughts before going to bed and after tinkering with the team for a while.
    Currently on
    Krul Foster
    Clyne Cahill Debuchy Duff Moore
    Ramsey Sterling Mata Siggy Marney
    Costa Rooney Naismith

Fabregas I think is becoming essential, and I think playing Naismith every week is not the best scenario, I want to switch to a 3-5-2 so I want to upgrade Marney.
Already did one FT for Jones to Duff
thinking of taking a Hit for Debuchy to Hutton , who I know his fixtures are not good for the coming three weeks in which I wont play him but I think Villa are becoming much more tighter and they can keep more clean sheets this season than many other times.
And next week I will do Cahill+Marney to Rafael/Fabregas for another hit.
I have not taken any hits yet this season, thinking this should be okay.

What do you guys think? Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance. 🙂

Evening. This summer, TorresMagic helped me run a World Cup Picks Competition in the Deadzone.
I would be happy to do the same for the Champions League. If you are interested, please post your picks here by copying the groups from this post and entering your picks as a reply. I will repost the link to this post over the next few days and entries will be due before the matches kick off, sometime Tuesday afternoon. Cheers.

    DEADZONE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PICKS COMPETITION

Rank each of the teams below from 32 (most likely to win) to 1 (least likely to win), giving a different numerical value to each team. DO NOT USE THE SAME NUMBER TWICE AND CHECK YOUR OWN WORK.

Each time a team wins in the group stage, you get those points. If the teams draw, you get the verge of their two rankings. Each stage of the competition has a different value.

    Group Stage 1x
    Round of 16 Advance 4x
    Quarterfinal Advance 6x
    Semifinal Advance 8x
    Champion 16x

Unlike the World Cup, the matchups are not known for the knockout stages until that draw, so you could get your 32 drawn against your 31 in the round of 16, for example.

    Wildcard draft:

    Begovic, McCarthy
    Rafael, Chambers, Clyne, Naylor, Moore
Di Maria, Ramsey, Fab, Sig, Boyd
    Costa, Aguero, Welbeck

Considering VA for Chambers or Welbeck -> Pelle and Rafael to VA

    Any feedback?

        van Aanholt from Sunderland.

Wary of Rafael's injury record, value at 5.3 if he continues getting starts though. Easy to shift out later if he doesn't.

Why the wildcard, if I may ask? You have been doing well, and it is not as if the price rises are fast enough to put any prospective wildcard team out of reach.
Long-term, this is what I want my team to look like. It may be a few weeks early for Welbeck, but he will do well. Same thing for Chambers... Arsenal have a tough couple of fixtures.
I would also urge caution with DiMaria - qpr make most teams look like world-beaters. ADM is quality, though.
IF Rafael nails down his place and IF United find some form, then Rafael might be a great pick.

Might have been hasty with wc, felt was losing ranks earlier w/o Costa C. Will always try to wc on first day of the week. Rooney C didn't do too badly though.

Wanted to shift out Albrington, Cahill, and wasn't happy with Krul/Foster rotation anymore after Newcastle shipped in 4. Also wanted to get in Southampton players like Clyne/Tadic/Pelle/Bertrand; Aguero and also Man United players like Di Maria and Falcao if they performed.

Wanted to get my team right early in season and felt this is the best time to do it. Hopefully will be able to manage injuries later without taking too many hits *fingers crossed*.

Anyway it's done, so will just make the best of it.

Hii guys! Luckily survived this week without Sigurdsson, Sterling and Fabregas but now planning to use my WC and do required changes, what do you think?
    Current team:
    Mannone
Cahill, Curtis, Caulker, Clyne, Van Aanholt
    Ramsey, Tadic, Eriksen, Arfiled, Davis
    Costa, Ade, Balotelli
    Thanks 🙂

I'd be losing Balotelli, Curtis and Caulker at a minimum, and would probably be upgrading Arfield and / or Davis ASAP too. You could roll this out over a few GWs, otherwise something like this:

      Cahill > Duff
      Arfield > Sigurdsson / Sterling
      Eriksen > Fabregas
      Davis > Boyd
      Balotelli > Pelle

In which case it'd be worth pulling the trigger!

Cheers! 🙂 Thanks for input... Balotelli punt didnt go well, team mates never looked like passing to him. 😉

United thrived in that formation today. It is extremely attacking with Blind the only midfielder back and both fullbacks getting well forward.

I really feel Rooney will thrive in this set-up. He has so much more talent behind and beside him he is free to roam instead of feeling a need to put out fires for other players.

You could be right there. He no longer has to be 3 players at once. He can do his own thing again, exactly what he needed.

Such a thing can only happen early in the year when 30 points is the difference between 70k and 1k. But yeah, pretty crazy none the less.
And that's all before Monday's game where Chester's hat-trick and clean sheet will throw a spanner into the works... (Chester is more likely to score a hat-trick of own-goals, but I can dream).

Security of starts should be #1 priority in draft style games as they tend to be pretty shallow.
After that, I'd wonder who else you had?
I mean don't take another defender of you're in need of depth in the midfield.

I got 7th so I ended coming out with this...

        Begovic/Szcezny

        Terry/Moreno/Bertrand/Stones/Rose

        Ramsey/Tadic/Lallana/Zaha/Navas

        van Persie/Adebayor/Fletcher

Not too bad considering. Not sure who to get rid of and who to pick up.

Actually I've only made two transfers the entire year.

Was tempted to WC w/ Jones, Jovetić, Costa, & Ramsey all potentially out but, I figured I'd wait it out & use my bench.

What are people doing with Balotelli? As mentioned above I was disgusted with his lack of interest and lethargy against Aston Villa. Is he a flat track bully who'll score an early goal and then go on with it, or might just be lucky to snag a cheeky backheel assist every 5th game?

Very tempted to ditch him for Adebayor / Lukaku for this GW

Give him one more week, perhaps. Villa fouled and chipped him out of the game, not sure if that will happen every week,

      He shoots.
      He shoots a lot.
He shoots a lot for one of the league's best offences.
So, one bad game isn't enough to ditch him.

The same was said about Rooney after a cpl blanks.
It's silly to expect goals *every* week.
Players of their quality will come good.
      Be patient.

I think Sterling not being on the pitch affected him. Sterling stretches the defence so much and puts them on the back foot, makes room and time for Ballo. Rodgers is a clown to bench him especially with Sturridge out, don't think he will do it next week

There are some players in FPL that suffer from depreciation. Belotelli and Naismith are some of them. You buy them in and then after one week immediately you want to sell them again. The same can't be said of players that hold their value even through a blank, Aguero and Sterling being such examples.

I think its important to consider your transfers wisely, every player you get in, you should think, will I want to sell this player if they have a poor game straight away?

No, but he's playing in a shite defense. And maybe it doesn't. But it's the very definition of what Ryan is describing. I went with the wagon despite my concerns and now I can't get him fast enough. Sold my sleeper pick of the season Blackett for him, which makes it that much worse.

Yep. Liverpool kept the least amount of clean sheets out of last seasons' top 7 sides, from memory.
Having said that, I did still go ahead with Lovren in my WC side for GW4. You would still think they would improve defensively... hard to ignore the DEF investment with their upcoming fixtures too!

When's Skrtel due back? Does he come straight in for Sakho?

Easy to say after the event. I think most bought Naismith for the two games, and to make some money, plus to free up finances.
With Balotelli people were looking for an intermediate punt while they waited to see how Falcao performs.

Personally im no fan of Aguero, too much money for too much risk. Yes he will get points (when fit) but they come at a high price that sees the rest of the team suffer

I did the same with Naismith. Happy to hold for CPL, the intention was to switch to Welbeck but that could become Pelle now as they have QPR in 2 weeks

Aguero can score points in bunches, regularly. As Costa has done. I'm quite happy to invest in him and don't see where my team is suffering elsewhere. Simple fact is there looks to be more value in budget defense this season and so I already regret my Moreno pick.

That was one of the arguments that swayed me from getting Bojan at the beginning of the season. Knowing that if he did not fire straight away, his price would drop, and I would want to lose him before too long. I'm glad there are a few voices of reason around here 🙂
