Election fever gripped the community this week in its search for a Scout Picks champion in what proved to be the closest contest yet. We look back on that campaign, whilst also checking in on the activity surrounding the frantic deadline day dash Ultimate Fantasy Premier League managers faced. Elsewhere, we revisit a love letter for Leighton Baines and consider the balance of perception versus reality. As ever, we throw in all the latest members tables, hottest topics and hear news of a new team-based quiz taking place soon.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 4 proved was pivotal for those playing the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game as the transfer window closed and managers made their final squad changes before January. Loans are still available up to then, but may not be needed if managers can get their selection right. Luckily QPR Expects Glory was on hand with this excellent guide to picking the right UFPL players for the next few months.

This weekend’s matches were also important for those looking for key differentials. The Puntmaster is proving quite the soothsayer with his regular trio of gambles and this week Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was among those coming into sharp focus in his crystal ball for Gameweek 4. Arvin-ation is another regular “punter” and offered up a trio of midfield options ahead of Gameweek 4.

With 15 % ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, Leighton Baines is hardly a differential. Christina argued, though, that his ownership ought to be higher. Here’s his passionate defence of the Everton man who repaid the faith with a strong haul in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, AZ took a look at the promoted teams’ defences to see if any budget friendly differential defenders had emerged as enticing prospects.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

As British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond took part in some frantic last-minute campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, we had our very own dramatic battle on the hustings. In our tightest contest yet to find a community champion for our Gameweek Scout Picks, Arvin-ation prevailed over rival Doosra by a nail-biting 105-104 votes. This was our biggest poll yet, with the community offering up 20 candidates to choose from. Watch out on Monday when the morning’s daily hot topic will launch the search for a Gameweek 5 community champion.

There was more campaigning against homophobia in football this week by the charity Stonewall. It has been urging footballers to show their support for their campaign by wearing rainbow laces. Thanks to the efforts of Tinkerman, our community also showed their support for the campaign by adopting a range of brightly coloured Gravatar images.

Facer chipped in with another of the week’s popular posts – our resident injury expert correctly assessed that Aaron Ramsey would shake off his injury and start.

Diego Costa was, of course, another player to recover from an injury doubt for Gameweek 4 – with devastating effect Pepin pointed out that, with such a high ownership, his hat-trick this weekend presents the season with its first game-changing moment, particularly for those that captained the Chelsea striker. Why is Pardew for Kinnear took this issue further, showcasing how a raft of highly owned, high scoring players, also including Cesc Fabregas, have the potential to ruin the season.

Impressed by QPR Expects Glory’s guide to the UFPL transfer day, 7 Shades of Smoke consulted his abacus to come up with this detailed look at where the smart money should be invested in the game. This will be worth looking back on in January when the transfer window reopens.

Finally, we asked to what extent perception clouds our sense of reality over a player’s potential. Inspired by a raft of posts critical of Danny Welbeck’s goal-scoring ability, despite statistics showing he is one of the Premier League’s most accurate strikers, we asked which other players cause a blind spot. For Goonerbyron, Yaya Toure remains a no-go zone, while for Athletico Timbo, Mario Balotelli is a player he remains reluctant to recruit; the showing against Villa certainly backed his stance.

The Members Tables

My goals imminent table, which seeks to predict potential goal-scorers based on goal attempts so far, claimed a couple of notable victories this weekend after correctly anticipating strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Pelle. Members are urged to keep a close eye on this table during the week to gain an insight into Gameweek 5’s under-the-radar potential high scorers.

Elsewhere in the members area Saintkeratinsins constructed this interesting look at the most attacking midfielders so far this season based on attempts on goal. Goal threat was also a focus for Burdinho in his look at the key performance indicators for forwards, midfielders and defenders.

Shots in the box remains the key criteria for assessing attacking potential for Banana Shaquiri, meanwhile Sk42ers looked at more negative attributes of strikers by delving into indicators such as bad touches and big chances missed.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Freak dropped in to bring us news of an intriguing new team-based quiz competition he has planned. More details can be found here. Seems like a fairly intelligent group around tonight. Would like your opinions.

    A) Ramsey -> Di Maria with my FT
    B) Henderson/Ivanovic -> Di Maria/5.0 defender for -4

    A) seems like the best option, but Liverpool are so tame in attack without Sturridge that it renders Henderson somewhat useless.

      I wouldn't trade Ivanovic, goal and CS against City away last season. I did Ramsey to ADM last week

      Maybe Henderson will see these next 2\3 games as his chance to shine...... But maybe he'll revert back to type and play like the Henderson of old and be pretty useless
      And although im a Iva owner ( 1 week late) i think over the course of the season B would be the best bet dependng on the Def in question (Bertrand imo)

    DZers!

    1 FT. What to do? Hold on to it or make a transfer:

    Krul (Gilks)

    Taylor, Clyne, Caulker (Coloccini, PVA)

    Fabregas, Siggy, Sterling, Ramsey (Albrighton)

    Adebayor, Diego Cosa, Aguero

    Any advice greatly appreciated!

      Good team. Most people will play Colo but you still have Caulker, apparently. Be patience/brave with him, or use your FT if you lost it already.

    Took a 4 point hit last week and it paid off in spades. Mata/Jovetic = Costa/Schneiderlin.
    43 points for the two. 84 points for the week with more to come. Now inside the top 10K.
    This weeks 4 point hit. Kelly/Ramsey = Raphael/De Maria.

          Don't forget that they have played everton, chelsea, and arsenal in the first 3 weeks though. I was looking at this myself last week because I was interested in Moore. Considering they have played those teams, they only shipped 5 goals. Chelsea put 6 past everton alone.
          As a fellow pelle purchaser last week I thought I'd give ya a little heads up.

            Have a look at the number of shots they conceded inside the box against Stoke as well... Clearly shows that either that keeper had a stormer or they were lucky to come away with a clean sheet... You give that many chances to Rooney,RVP,Mata,Falcao,ADM and you'll be punished...severely!

      How about Terry?

      Yep it's the way Mour play (2-0 win at Anfield last season was only 1 example), but there's something wrong about CHE defence this year. Old legs? No Cech to yell at them? I don't know, but it's frustrating as an FPL owner.

          I'm deciding between Welbeck and Pelle atm.

          I don't fancy Welbeck away at Villa or against Chelsea though. And as you say, QPR could be fruitful.

            He will get points but it causes comprimises elsewhere

            Looking forward to see Welback against Dortmond. Really want him to get an Arsenal goal under his belt, to male him nailed. Shame he missed that sitter against city

              What do you think of my current WC draft?

              Schmeichel - McCarthy
              Baines - Rafael - Chambers - Duff - Hutton
              Di Maria - Fabregas - Sterling - Siggy - Boyd
              Rooney - Costa - Pelle

              .
              Keepers are the weak point but I'm hoping for saves from Kasper, and starts from McCarthy.

    Need to trade out Debuchy as he is injured.

    Already have Clyne, would u go for a ManUTD defender given their fixtures coming up?

    If yes, who? Im thinking Evans maybe...

    Caulker -> Hutton
    Debuchy -> Cahill
    Ings -> Naismith
    -4

    Makes sense?

        I can't afford Baines sadly

        This is my team so far:

        Bego Gilks
        Debuchy Lovren PVA Caulker Baird
        Hazard Sterling Siggurdson Ramsey Westwood
        Costa Ings and Rooney.

        I'm also considering getting Cline and Pelle.

    Surely I need to use the FT after a disastrous GW, but can't really justify any move. Should I use it on Terry/Hazard? Am I mad to think that CHE can get a result at City? 2.9 itb btw.

    Krul Elliot
    Terry Clyne Chester Hutton Wisdom
    Hazard Ramsey Sterling Siggy Marney

    Thoughts appreciated.

      Either

      A) Hazard to ADM (expect ADM to outscore Hazard comfortably over the next few weeks)
      B) Terry to Baines
      C) A and B both

    Long time lurker on this site. Have done FPL for a couple of years but usually run out of steam towards the end of the season. Trying to give it a decent crack this season but not off to a great start. Have Mutch and Sturridge who absolutely need to go this week, and would very much like to get on Fabragas. Considering:

    A) Mutch --> Fab, Studge --> Ulloa (-4)

    B) Mutch,Caulker,Ramsay,Studge,Naismith --> Fab,Duff,Boyd,Pelle,Rooney (with WC)

    0.1 short of doing Mutch, Studge --> Fab, Pelle. I am super wary of the poor upcoming fixtures for Arsenal and Everton but want to be on Welbeck in the medium term. Rest of team should be linked. Any ideas?

    Krul Elliot

    Sterling Ramsey Mata Sigurdsson Marney
    Rooney Costa Adebayor

    A) Caulker Cahill > Rojo+Duff

          😀

          PVA has Stoke,Burnley,Swansea and Palace in the next 5 so a decent chance of both defensive/attacking returns there... and Baines is,Baines.... 🙂

    Hey guys, seems to be some good advice flying around here tonight. Not disastrous this week, but seeing as Man U are finally up and running I need some advice.

    Bego / Myhill

    Baines - Cahill - Chambers (Moore - Baird)

    Ramsey - Sterling - Siggy - Fabregas (Mutch)

    Costa - Balotelli - Naismith

    Pretty unhappy with Mario, but he's got some good fixtures coming up. Don't want to have to take more than a -4...

    Thoughts on my wildcard team? Do you think its too weak in defence? Any suggestions would be great!

    Forster (Hamer)
    Bertrand Wilsonl Duff (Taylor Moore)
    Ramsey Di Maria Fabregas Siggy (Marney)
    Costa Aguero Pelle

    0.3 in the bank

    thanks heaps guys

      As close as it gets in my opinion. I don't have him (I have Hazard) but historically he normally performs very well in the first half of the season compared to the second half (can't remember who posted the comparison but it was quite telling).

      So if you don't have him, I would jump on him quick.
