Election fever gripped the community this week in its search for a Scout Picks champion in what proved to be the closest contest yet. We look back on that campaign, whilst also checking in on the activity surrounding the frantic deadline day dash Ultimate Fantasy Premier League managers faced. Elsewhere, we revisit a love letter for Leighton Baines and consider the balance of perception versus reality. As ever, we throw in all the latest members tables, hottest topics and hear news of a new team-based quiz taking place soon.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 4 proved was pivotal for those playing the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game as the transfer window closed and managers made their final squad changes before January. Loans are still available up to then, but may not be needed if managers can get their selection right. Luckily QPR Expects Glory was on hand with this excellent guide to picking the right UFPL players for the next few months.

This weekend’s matches were also important for those looking for key differentials. The Puntmaster is proving quite the soothsayer with his regular trio of gambles and this week Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was among those coming into sharp focus in his crystal ball for Gameweek 4. Arvin-ation is another regular “punter” and offered up a trio of midfield options ahead of Gameweek 4.

With 15 % ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, Leighton Baines is hardly a differential. Christina argued, though, that his ownership ought to be higher. Here’s his passionate defence of the Everton man who repaid the faith with a strong haul in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, AZ took a look at the promoted teams’ defences to see if any budget friendly differential defenders had emerged as enticing prospects.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

As British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond took part in some frantic last-minute campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, we had our very own dramatic battle on the hustings. In our tightest contest yet to find a community champion for our Gameweek Scout Picks, Arvin-ation prevailed over rival Doosra by a nail-biting 105-104 votes. This was our biggest poll yet, with the community offering up 20 candidates to choose from. Watch out on Monday when the morning’s daily hot topic will launch the search for a Gameweek 5 community champion.

There was more campaigning against homophobia in football this week by the charity Stonewall. It has been urging footballers to show their support for their campaign by wearing rainbow laces. Thanks to the efforts of Tinkerman, our community also showed their support for the campaign by adopting a range of brightly coloured Gravatar images.

Facer chipped in with another of the week’s popular posts – our resident injury expert correctly assessed that Aaron Ramsey would shake off his injury and start.

Diego Costa was, of course, another player to recover from an injury doubt for Gameweek 4 – with devastating effect Pepin pointed out that, with such a high ownership, his hat-trick this weekend presents the season with its first game-changing moment, particularly for those that captained the Chelsea striker. Why is Pardew for Kinnear took this issue further, showcasing how a raft of highly owned, high scoring players, also including Cesc Fabregas, have the potential to ruin the season.

Impressed by QPR Expects Glory’s guide to the UFPL transfer day, 7 Shades of Smoke consulted his abacus to come up with this detailed look at where the smart money should be invested in the game. This will be worth looking back on in January when the transfer window reopens.

Finally, we asked to what extent perception clouds our sense of reality over a player’s potential. Inspired by a raft of posts critical of Danny Welbeck’s goal-scoring ability, despite statistics showing he is one of the Premier League’s most accurate strikers, we asked which other players cause a blind spot. For Goonerbyron, Yaya Toure remains a no-go zone, while for Athletico Timbo, Mario Balotelli is a player he remains reluctant to recruit; the showing against Villa certainly backed his stance.

The Members Tables

My goals imminent table, which seeks to predict potential goal-scorers based on goal attempts so far, claimed a couple of notable victories this weekend after correctly anticipating strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Pelle. Members are urged to keep a close eye on this table during the week to gain an insight into Gameweek 5’s under-the-radar potential high scorers.

Elsewhere in the members area Saintkeratinsins constructed this interesting look at the most attacking midfielders so far this season based on attempts on goal. Goal threat was also a focus for Burdinho in his look at the key performance indicators for forwards, midfielders and defenders.

Shots in the box remains the key criteria for assessing attacking potential for Banana Shaquiri, meanwhile Sk42ers looked at more negative attributes of strikers by delving into indicators such as bad touches and big chances missed.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Freak dropped in to bring us news of an intriguing new team-based quiz competition he has planned. More details can be found here. Meanwhile, to take part in discussion on another team-based competition, the FFS UEFA group’s Hockey World Cup, please visit their dedicated competition article here.

Argh, I've got a headache with choosing my starting defenders for GW5:

    Krul / Bego
    Colo - Caulker - Chambers - Ivanovic - Duff

which one I should choose (I think I won't choose 2 players from Newcastle):

    A) Bego / Colo - Caulker - Ivanovic
    B) Krul / Chambers - Ivanovic - Duff
    C) Krul / Ivanovic - Duff - Caulker
    D) Bego / Colo - Duff - Ivanovic

    Hi All,

Anyone got any suggestions for my team?

    De Gea / (Gilks)
    Clyne / Debuchy ** / Pieters ** / (O'Shea) / Caulker
    Fabregas / Ramsey / Sterling / Sigurdsson / (Schneiderlin)
    Rooney / Costa / Naismith

    1 FT, 0.3 ITB.

    Debuchy looks the biggest worry?

Yeh, your midf and forward line is template, but Debuchy is out for a while. Don't fancy any QPR defenders - there's plenty value in the mid-price defender market.

Wanna get Baines in for Terry.. Love Baines and i have the patience for him(always keep him for a looooong time and dont mind occasional 2 pointers even at that price). However, considering i play 3 at the back and the rest of my defense atm for this week is

    Clyne(swa) Chester(new) Caulker(STK) Duff(SUN) ..

does it make sense getting him and benching 2 from those? or just keep Terry and get rid around GW 8 for Baines.. By then Chelsea's defense may look better too

Note: Forgot to mention it would be for a hit 😳 .. so repost

Terry to Baines for GW8, I reckon. Terry might drop 0.1 more (but might not) but as long as this isn't an issue I'd wait.

Yep.. Cheers all. thought as much. Really dont like owning Terry atm but it's not the end of the world. gonna bench him this week out of anger. IF he scores/gets a CS or both i'll just be happy he did somethin worthwhile even if i dont get the points 🙂

    Lost on last page:

In the short term if Haz is rested for Champo fixtures, Siggy might outscore him, but over the season I'd expect Haz to outscore Siggy, but Siggy to be better in terms of ppmillion. So it's horses-for-courses really. I'd want to get Fabby in soonish, however.

McCarthy turned down Liverpool, City and Swansea because he wants to play first team football. He said he made up his mind after talking with 'arry. This suggests he was promised 1st team football, a theory strengthened by Redknapp heaping praise on him in a recent interview.

    I think we'll have a playing 4.0m goalkeeper soon 🙂

Would you actually field him? On yesterday's evidence, QPR are an absolute shower.

I'd probably take him over Krul, though.

For 4.0m, 2-3pts is good value.

For 4.0m he's a no brainer, better than a deap keeper.

Hello guys, should I transfer out Mata for Fabregas or Rooney for Costa? Next GW chelsea have City away so I think they'll find it hard to score there.. and on the other side there's Man United playing Leichester.. I'm really confused!

anyone not captaining Costa next week? It seems ridiculous when they are playing City but his form is so good.

also: still struggling with 3 from: Vert, Evra, Duff, Shawcross, Naylor

Assuming Debuchy is officially confirmed as out for a number of weeks...

    I'll do Fonte to Chambers

But I have 2FT's so should I also do...

    Schurrle to Eriksen
    Dzeko to Lukaku

    Or

    Both for a -4pt hit??

Why is ADM essential after one game? People are considering removing players like Ramsey, and Sterling, who have performed well on a number of occasions this season. I remember after GW1 everyone was raving about Ramsey, and Sterling too. Same thing with Sterling last week. Both have been the best options from their respective clubs, with Sanchez also offering good value at Arsenal. So against a very weak QPR he gets a goal and an assist and looks brilliant. Surely any less would have been a disappointment?

Sterling did the same against a strong looking Southampton, and has scored well since. Ramsey has scored well throughout this season and in pre season, and notched an assist in addition. The price is also a factor, he is 1M more expensive than Sterling and 0.5M more than Ramsey.

I'm not saying he is a bad choice, he is a brilliant pick. But no way is he essential. No way is it worth forking out Ramsey or Sterling or even other performing players for the matter, to get him.

I did not watch it, but there is no way a player can be essential after one game. Do you thing he will play like that in his other 32?

Honestly, I think he will (or to be more accurate, will be United's Player of the Season). He won't score a semi-fluke goal too often but he will lay on at least as many assists as Fabregas, There are rotation issues over a number of the United point-getters, but I think DiM is a nailed-on starter. Blind and Herrera really solidified things in midfield but aren't the best FPL prospects; DiM is, imo.

        The very definition of essential;

'a thing that is absolutely necessary.'

In FPL terms, that would mean necessary to get a decent rank/gameweek total.

There are options such as Fabregas, Ramsey, Sterling, Hazard, Sanchez, Mata and much cheaper options like Mirallas, Tadic, Chadli and Eriksen.

Owning Di Maria is NOT essential, ffs.

it's the panic caused by not owning a player every week.. when sterling/Ramsey score a goal next week they'll become essential again. Personally i'm giving Fabs/ADM/Sanchez another week of monitoring before i get one of em in for Eriksen

This game is nothing without the kneejerkers.

But then again, it's very frustrating when the kneejerkers got rewarded , i.e Dier & Schneiderlin. AArrghhh!

I was not swayed by the likes of Dier and Schneiders, nor Dyer or Chadli, nor Falcao. DiM has shown me enough to be convinced. The great thing about FPL is we'll be proved right or wrong at the end of the season. I wildcarded this week and bagged 81 points but it won't be until May that we can tell each other "told you so!". However, I'm content to play him every week until you guys belatedly catch onto my coattails 😉
