Election fever gripped the community this week in its search for a Scout Picks champion in what proved to be the closest contest yet. We look back on that campaign, whilst also checking in on the activity surrounding the frantic deadline day dash Ultimate Fantasy Premier League managers faced. Elsewhere, we revisit a love letter for Leighton Baines and consider the balance of perception versus reality. As ever, we throw in all the latest members tables, hottest topics and hear news of a new team-based quiz taking place soon.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 4 proved was pivotal for those playing the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game as the transfer window closed and managers made their final squad changes before January. Loans are still available up to then, but may not be needed if managers can get their selection right. Luckily QPR Expects Glory was on hand with this excellent guide to picking the right UFPL players for the next few months.

This weekend’s matches were also important for those looking for key differentials. The Puntmaster is proving quite the soothsayer with his regular trio of gambles and this week Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was among those coming into sharp focus in his crystal ball for Gameweek 4. Arvin-ation is another regular “punter” and offered up a trio of midfield options ahead of Gameweek 4.

With 15 % ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, Leighton Baines is hardly a differential. Christina argued, though, that his ownership ought to be higher. Here’s his passionate defence of the Everton man who repaid the faith with a strong haul in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, AZ took a look at the promoted teams’ defences to see if any budget friendly differential defenders had emerged as enticing prospects.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

As British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond took part in some frantic last-minute campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, we had our very own dramatic battle on the hustings. In our tightest contest yet to find a community champion for our Gameweek Scout Picks, Arvin-ation prevailed over rival Doosra by a nail-biting 105-104 votes. This was our biggest poll yet, with the community offering up 20 candidates to choose from. Watch out on Monday when the morning’s daily hot topic will launch the search for a Gameweek 5 community champion.

There was more campaigning against homophobia in football this week by the charity Stonewall. It has been urging footballers to show their support for their campaign by wearing rainbow laces. Thanks to the efforts of Tinkerman, our community also showed their support for the campaign by adopting a range of brightly coloured Gravatar images.

Facer chipped in with another of the week’s popular posts – our resident injury expert correctly assessed that Aaron Ramsey would shake off his injury and start.

Diego Costa was, of course, another player to recover from an injury doubt for Gameweek 4 – with devastating effect Pepin pointed out that, with such a high ownership, his hat-trick this weekend presents the season with its first game-changing moment, particularly for those that captained the Chelsea striker. Why is Pardew for Kinnear took this issue further, showcasing how a raft of highly owned, high scoring players, also including Cesc Fabregas, have the potential to ruin the season.

Impressed by QPR Expects Glory’s guide to the UFPL transfer day, 7 Shades of Smoke consulted his abacus to come up with this detailed look at where the smart money should be invested in the game. This will be worth looking back on in January when the transfer window reopens.

Finally, we asked to what extent perception clouds our sense of reality over a player’s potential. Inspired by a raft of posts critical of Danny Welbeck’s goal-scoring ability, despite statistics showing he is one of the Premier League’s most accurate strikers, we asked which other players cause a blind spot. For Goonerbyron, Yaya Toure remains a no-go zone, while for Athletico Timbo, Mario Balotelli is a player he remains reluctant to recruit; the showing against Villa certainly backed his stance.

The Members Tables

My goals imminent table, which seeks to predict potential goal-scorers based on goal attempts so far, claimed a couple of notable victories this weekend after correctly anticipating strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Pelle. Members are urged to keep a close eye on this table during the week to gain an insight into Gameweek 5’s under-the-radar potential high scorers.

Elsewhere in the members area Saintkeratinsins constructed this interesting look at the most attacking midfielders so far this season based on attempts on goal. Goal threat was also a focus for Burdinho in his look at the key performance indicators for forwards, midfielders and defenders.

Shots in the box remains the key criteria for assessing attacking potential for Banana Shaquiri, meanwhile Sk42ers looked at more negative attributes of strikers by delving into indicators such as bad touches and big chances missed.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Freak dropped in to bring us news of an intriguing new team-based quiz competition he has planned. More details can be found here. Meanwhile, to take part in discussion on another team-based competition, the FFS UEFA group’s Hockey World Cup, please visit their dedicated competition article here.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that the hand heart shape celebration from Di Maria is cringe worthy unless a) he did it before Bale or b) he did it before Mo Farah ( I thought Mo was the original but only because he got showed it on A League Of Their Own )

    A) Best defender (6.5 or less) for a one week punt?
    B) Is Haz -> Fab worth a FT for this week only, or is it better to get aforementioned defender in so Wisdom doesn't have to play?

Didn't get many minutes and United already were up 4-0 when he came on so they weren't as aggressive as in the first half... so hard to judge him really. He had one clear scoring opportunity which he promptly shot into Green. He could kill it next time though, who knows. Di Maria didn't overly impress in his debut vs Burnley and look out that turned out.

Thinking about a similar move myself. But for now I'd probably err on the side of caution in that it's too early to say. I think Di Maria will be awesome this season, but QPR really weren't up to anything at all today and just how good Utd are remains to be seen imo.

He's probably the opposite of those two adjectives to be honest. Strong and quick. His main issue is how erratic his final ball or shot can be. But as has been discussed he hasn't had a proper run of games up front, so until that happens the jury will be out. I think he'll be good for Arsenal though.

he's nothing like sturridge that's for sure. sturridge is infinitely more skilful with the ball at his feet. welbeck seems more one-dimensional, more of a one-twos player and running onto things in front of him.
i wouldn't call him weak or sluggish (albeit i'm taking those words literally which may not be the way they are written). we'll find out a lot more about him in these next few months anyway. an extended run in a position which suits him most

    A. Hazard + Ulloa (1.5 mil in the bank)
    B. Fabregas + Pelle (.2 mil in the bank and 4 point hit)
    C. Fabregas + Ulloa (2.2 mil in the bank and 4 point hit)

May be sooner than people might realise. Apparently Mane was a player that Koeman and Reed highlighted as a target from very early on in the window, suggesting he was seen as a priority, or at least someone who could play in the same role. Throughout the window Koeman kept reiterating his search for a more natural wide option. Mane seems to be the kind of player Koeman was talking about.

The Sunderland defence was decent last season, I'm not sure what's happened. No CSs so far.

They've been really poor at the back from what I've seen, worse than they were last season under Poyet. Going forwards, van Aanholt looks a brilliant pick, but he's a pretty shaky defender, whilst O'Shea and Brown are in their mid-thirties now, and seem to be regressing season on season. The next three fixtures are tempting, but I've decided to avoid them for now.

seems a good time to get the jovetic 3 man city strikers into 2 (possibly even 1) headache dealt with and sell. silva i think will be gold if he keeps playing off 1 striker but 1 game at the emirates is not enough evidence that you'll get more than just the chelsea game there in the near future. overall, yeah why not. go for it, but i'd still try and wait until after the european games if possible, despite di maria and pelle not being in europe, just in case a couple of your big players get injured in midweek

Baines and Ade have Liv and Ars both away in gw6 though. Still worth it, even though I may need to use the FT on Ade next week? Fwiw I'd be captaining Ade against WBA

How likely is Chester to start tomorrow? Thinking he could be dropped for Dawson. Cheers 🙂

Yeah, I hope he's not dropped either. Got Coloccinis majestic 0 points coming in if Chester doesnt play 🙂

It'd force me to play my WC which would be rather annoying. Anyway I would expect him to start especially as they tend to play with 3 CB's

Argh, hope it doesnt force you to WC mate! But, Hull have brought in a lot of attackers in the transfer window, and I think Bruce may switch to a back 4 to try and accomodate them all, but if he does, lets hope Chester starts anyway. Good luck! 🙂

I just realized but isn't Mata's position the same as Oscar's? If so, how come mourinho couldn't find a way to fit him in his system?

Mata is much better than Oscar if you ask me.

At the time Mourinho thought Oscar was better. Probably because he has a better work rate defensively.

Really? I never see Oscar defending but then again I'm not the special one

Well he ran around a lot more when he didn't have the ball. That counts as working harder apparently.

oscar much more mobile and way better at winning the ball back. one of the reason i like oscar most is he proves how stupid the assumption you have to be a big hard man to win a size 5 bit of leather back

Mata is a passenger. Oscar tracks back and makes lots of tackles. Made an v of 2.3 tackles per game this season. Mata makes an average of 0.3

No... To play in the hole for Mourinho, in a 4-2-3-1, you're a part of the midfield three, and are expected to work hard defensively - not Mata's strong point, but something Oscar is much better at - the guy in the hole sits deeper than the two players out wide.

At United, in a 3-4-1-2 or a 4-4-2 diamond, he's one of the three most attacking players, along with the two strikers. He doesn't have to sit deep or work hard to indulge for attacking wingers who don't track back - there's also an extra player sitting deeper than him in the middle of the park to cover for him - either as the third centre back or holding role that Blind played today. This frees him up to be more attacking, which plays to his strengths.

Oh ok I see. So the "in the hole" position isn't exactly the same role for United as it is for Chelsea

Man U ain't great at clean sheets - almost gave one up today - and i don't know how nailed on he is with Shaw Rojo Evans, Rafael all able.

Jones will come back as the right-sided CB, leaving him to then compete with both Evans and Rojo for a spot. LVG likes him, but not sure that extends to starting him when all CB's are fit.

Great effort on the United lineup btw. Was a gutsy call to go with the narrow diamond but you nailed it.

Cheers. Jones was pretty pivotal to the 3 at the back, and doubt LVG would've been comfortable playing 3 left footers in the three with him and Smalling out. Diamond was only way to realistically have Mata and two strikers i thought. LVG confirmed Rafael was fit, so saw him and Shaw as the ones to provide the width.

      OK cheers all.

I was confused because Blackett has been getting 90 all season, even when Jones was fit.

They have changed to a back 4 now because of the new signings. That means only 2 CB's so Evans and Jones will likely take up that mantle.
