Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

A four-goal blitz against Tottenham last time around has ensured Sergio Aguero is this week’s runaway leader, with almost 50% of the votes cast. Up to nine goals for the season, the Man City forward has netted in six of his eight appearances so far, and up against a West Ham side with a single shut-out all season (at home to QPR), Aguero has already risen 0.2 in price heading into the weekend deadline.

Graziano Pelle is some way back in second spot. The Southampton striker has earned just under 16% of votes cast as he prepares for the visit of Stoke – bearing in mind his last three appearances at St Mary’s have returned 13, 9 and 15 points in the FPL game, though, the Italian looks a viable option. Team-mate Dusan Tadic earns 4% of votes after serving up a goal and four assists at home to Sunderland – the playmaker has now produced 34 points in the last three in front of his own supporters.

Diego Costa remains in contention for the league leaders’ trip to Old Trafford. Only 4% are considering the Chelsea forward with the armband due to Jose Mourinho’s mind games, but if given the chance against United’s dodgy defence, he has to be considered, having netted in all but one of his seven appearances.

Raheem Sterling is an armband option for some as Liverpool prepare for a home clash with Hull. Having scored or assisted in five of his seven starts, the youngster has remained a consistent option – after moving to the lone forward role against Real Madrid in midweek, he’s persuaded 3% of Fantasy managers to hand him the captaincy. Gylfi Sigurdsson is similarly backed for Swansea’s home encounter with Leicester, though is struggling for form, having blanked in four of the last five.

Further down, Arsenal and Spurs are overlooked ahead of enticing showdowns with Sunderland and Newcastle. Danny Welbeck (3% of votes) and Alexis Sanchez (1%) face a Black Cats backline that shipped eight to Southampton last weekend, whilst Christian Eriksen (1%) and Nacer Chadli (0.8%) will be looking to take advantage of a Magpies defence that have kept out their opponents just once in the last six.

People seem split about whether to keep Costa or get rid. I want to wait for the pressers tomorrow of course but have one eye on price changes tonight.

Are Pelle/Baines/Sakho likely to rise, or Terry/Lovren/Costa to fall tonight?

Costa will probably fall. Personally I think it's worth taking the price drop and waiting for more news tomorrow. You'll be sick if you dump him tonight and he ends up starting and scoring a brace against Utd's "defence", all for the sake of saving 0.1m

Arsenal fans - any suggestion that Welbeck could be rested/ dropped for the weekend against Sunderland?

Seems to have played a lot of minutes both in the league and Europe. Sanago or Sanchez leading the line a possibility?

I ask because I drop either him or Fabregas this weekend. Cheers for any insight

wowsie that is a tough one. i have neither but of those it's fab on the bench for me although inhate having that much money on the bench. he's the least explosive and whatever about united playing poorly, it's still the hardest fixture of any of your front 8.

Don't think he'll be rested. After this game he will have a week off. Plus we have very few alternatives, what with wilshere suspended. Sanchez is needed in midfield I believe. Welbeck will only not start if podolski plays. Can't see it myself.

Unlikely, Arsenal need both Sanchez and Welbeck to play.

He is almost certain to continue up top, he did score in the last game in the league too despite being poor last night. NoGo is injured as per normal and Wenger not a fan of Poldi up top. Sanchez been very influential coming off the wings and on the counter attack, I think Wenger wants to make sure he is not isolated playing up top on his own. I dont see much changing until Theo comes back tbh (He might be on bench but I think Burnely will be the first minutes he gets)

    I have:

    Krul/Maannone
    Chanmbers/Williams/Clyne/ShawX/Jags
    ADM/Tadic/Sigs/Hazard/Obertan
    Pelle/Ulloa/Costa

I'm thinking about Costa -> Aguero. Any thoughts, compelling reason not to do so? I realize I'm paying a premium for Aguero, but that can't be helped.

Have you cash in bank for straight swap??
I'm trying to get him in as well but all my suggestions are met with no.

If you haven't cash in the bank.... I'd downgrade ShawX/Williams and use it to do Costa to Aguero

    Logical?

    I have Costa, Aguero, Wellbeck.

The way I see it, its a no brainer to do Costa > Pelle tonight.

Financially, I'd lose £0.1m on Costa before deadline, and potentially make £0.1m on Pelle.

I have 2 FT so if i save the other, I can afford to buy Costa back for QPR.

Even if Costa plays vs Utd/QPR, Pelle should outscore him.

Yeh and you could do Welbeck > Costa next week.
