A number of midfielders are amongst this evening’s members piece, as we take a look the in-form options at Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham and Tottenham. We also cast an eye over Diego Costa’s recent form, assess Sergio Aguero’s displays compared to recent campaigns and take time to assess QPR’s in-form frontman after another impressive showing in yesterday’s narrow defeat at the Bridge.

Can anybody see any way that Poch can resist Kane's inclusion now ?..and if he notches when he get's a start will there be any going back ?

Doesn't matter, a goals a goal. The fact is the whole team played better with him in it. He's heading for a collision course with the fans soon is Mr Poch...

I don't understand that! It does matter since a deflected free kick says basically nothing about the player. But if the whole team played better then fair enough!

How many goals involve a bit of luck somewhere down the line ? quite a few...The fact is he grabbed the ball and was prepared to be the one getting the bit of luck...

              Both Spurs goals were lucky

Chadli was woeful, but still popped up on the right place to get himself a goal

the team played better when Villa were reduced to 10 men. Until that point Spurs were toiling. It was the sending off that turned the game, not Harry Kane imo.

This is exactly the kind of FPL transfer that is bound to end in tears. He starts the next game, doesn't score, then doesn't start after that, then has a great fixture, maybe he'll start (?), and so on.

Given that he chose to start Soldado over Hurricane today... I won't be surprised if he's on the bench come next GW. Most unfortunate cos he looks like their best forward.

I'm curious, why does everyone seem to think that Soton will suddenly start to struggle playing at home to the likes of Everton and Man U?

Just because their fixtures are tougher doesn't mean their form will start to suffer.

(I didn't mean for that last bit to rhyme)

Fixtures over form for me unless you're talking about a Suarez/Bale type destroyer. With tougher fixtures, I expect southampton to score less and concede more so I'll no longer want to be tripling up on them. Their assets have reasonable enough price tags that they're not must sells though.

      1. Bartowski
        • 15 Years
        11 years, 1 month ago

They've conceded five goals all season. That's half as many as the next best.

My point is that if Chelsea had tougher fixtures everyone wouldn't suddenly dump their defenders even if there was a good chance they might concede.

Chelsea are (or were) a different animal though. In years past, they've been able to shut out even the best teams. Southampton don't have that track record. In general, I would be looking to sell a defender if he had a patch of really tough fixtures coming up and he had a premium price.

      1. Bartowski

Everton couldn't score at home to Swansea, Man U got a late goal against the next best defence in Chelsea and have struggled to break down the likes of West Ham and Everton at home.

I think the assumption that Soton will definitely concede to these teams (playing at home) is based more on ingrained reputation than the current situation.

(That last bit rhymed a bit as well, I must have been a rap star in a previous life).

I'm a Saints supporter, and they have certainly looked very good this year. The only worry is that defending against the likes of DiMaria, Falcao, Rooney and RVP is quite a different proposition than defending against (say) Sunderland. Having said that, I'm still hopeful. They have been very organised, and Koeman has done an amazing job. I think they are creative enough to score against anyone........

Because most have 2-3 Soton players at the moment, and usually 1-2 out of Clyne/Bertrand/Forster. They'll surely start conceding goals in that period.

Even last year, they started exceptionally well and then fell back to "upper midtable" position as their fixtures got harder. They'll probably do a bit better this year, but it's a hard enough run to avoid having more than 1 Soton player.

I'd keep Pelle (maybe), but get rid of the rest.

will expand that and say i think there may be merit holding onto their attacking assets but by the time the tough run comes you will be able to cash in on the likes of clyne and bertrand for over 5mil which i think is more than they will be worth at that point

Southampton don't play United at home until GW 15 and Everton until GW17. Before that they face City at home and Arsenal away, and starting in GW19 it's Chelsea and Arsenal at home and United away. So far, the schedule has given Southampton a pretty easy ride, they've lost to the two best sides they've faced (Liverpool and Spurs) and drawn against West Brom, and in GW 13 we'll begin to see what they're really made of. I think I'll watch that from the sidelines and put some Hammers on the pitch instead.

Urgh. I have been away and just logged in. I woyld be gloating about a great haul of points and moving up 1.4 million places in a few gameweeks, but the sad thing is that i have sterling absolutely bucketing money.

However, he has lost so much this week that he won't drop again, so all thos transfers out from now on will just reduce his ownership, making him something of a differential. Maybe i should hold for one more week (have been saying that for three weeks.

                  Costa, aguero, pelle

Not costa, surely? Although i have chelsea 'coverage' in hazard. This week this midfield was immense but i am considering this as a one off. Can't be complacent! nice team. Tough decisions there. Seems like Pelle or Costa has to go, but who would be their replacement?? Could blow up in your face either way. Pelle > Sakho gives u double WHU attack which is tricky, plus he has a good fixture - captain candidate even.

Damn, wouldn't want to be you. Think you spread TV around a little too well...

I'm riding it out but only because I haven't figured out a replacement yet. I mean ADM would be an obvious choice but then who do I downgrade Eriksen (who I also want to lose) to? Don't fancy Downing. I thought of Mirallas but he's out for a few weeks...or I could punt on Ameobi if he continues to get gametime. But that's one to watch. It would eventually allow me to swap Pelle for Costa with the cash saved though...

I'm rambling but in short I need to wait to see who the best replacements are. I think

I would stop the rot and take the hit. They are a lesion you must remove.

The longer you hold on to them, the more limited your future moves will be. I've been stubborn 2 weeks too long with Sterling over Sanchez because of 2 'decent' fixtures.

Regret it but swallowed my pride and sold. Admit a mistake was made, correct it.

Yep, thanks that's sound advice. I'm not averse to back-tracking if I think I've made a mistake, but I'm trying not to worry too much about TV this season also. Same, i did feel conflicted as well. Purely a move based on price swings as I had to sell Tadic as well to fund the trade up to Sanchez. But oh well, can't hate the player...and we can't hate the game.

Haven't bothered about TV so far this season but this particular trade was abit too compelling - given Sterling was on the ropes for many and literally was an explosion imminent...esp with ready made, clear alternatives who are sure to rise 🙁

We talk about trying to get on players who explodes on points, but sometimes it's also the players who are about to be culled en masse that are key!

Sterling and Eriksen are certainly in that category..values will plummet. Just off a wildcard too! Oh well 🙂

I'll have a look at Chadli then, since you're both saying it. Cheers. I just feel embittered by my Eriksen experience I think...and another Spurs mid seems sideways. But he is cheap..

No it is certainly sideways...but the funds it frees up allows a massive upgrade. That is the clincher for me. It's sort of just a wasted transfer, but looks a good route into upgrading Sterling from my seat on the couch 🙂

Sometimes, this game is like the stock markets. Ride the waves of the market and on stocks that people are bullish on. Downing/Chadli are the popular enablers to allow Sanchez in at the moment.

No point being stubborn about certain players only to be hit by price drops and lost points.

Yep, and it's the point losses that smarts most. Sometimes I think having a lower team value can save you from getting in fools gold type players, which otherwise you could have afforded. In fact Eriksen over Chadli might be a case in point. If only my TV had been still lower, I might not have made the mistake 😉

Yeah...we've all been there and done that - picking the pricier players only for the cheaper ones to perform! Tried to kick that bias but it's a hard habit to kill.

I'm still mad. Let's pick on the signings.

      The good: none.

      The okay-ish:

Moreno: Has been at fault for 2 goals in 10 games but he's looked promising going forward and is looking to be a good left back. An upgrade on what we had last season and for 12m, he looks to be a good buy.

Manquillo: Hasnt been outstanding but hasn't been a dog, like Johnson. Offers zilch going forward but he's a good 1 on 1 defender. Can hold up a man, is strong but still has a lot to learn. A 2 year loan should see him develope nonetheless.

Can: Injury hit start to his life at Liverpool but when he's played he's looked promising. Very strong, quick and can breakup play. I'd have him in the first team to be honest. Passing needs to improve, though.

      The bad:

Lovren: For his mum's sake, I won't rip into him that much. An absolute arrogant mug who's been at fault for most of our goals. Had a good season at Saints, maybe down to having Wanyama and Schneiderlin in front. He's been awful for us, 20m FFS. Poor business. Our defence has got worse and it's down to Rodgers + Lovren.

Markovic: maybe harsh to chuck him in with the bad. But at 20m, you expect something. All this "potential", "promising" malarkey, it's quite clear we needed first teamers. He hasn't played much but when he has, he looks afraid and timid. He's 20 and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, needs a year or 2 to settle. A bit similar to the Lamela situation.

Lallana: he's in the bad because yet again, his price tag. Good with this feet, good passer and pleasing on the eye. Always felt he's just good at playing fancy ball but has no numbers in his game. At 25m, Isco was available in the summer. Both on the same wages, too. A bit of perspective; I'd rather have Cazorla over Lallana. Cazorla is a bench player for Arsenal, and they're our competition. Says a lot.

      Undecided:

Balotelli: Yes his body language is poor. Yes he shoots a lot. I will judge him after he gets a run of games with Sturridge. The one game they played in, he did very well. The strange thing with Mario is that he does a lot of defensive work, but looks lazy when attacking. Seems like he either fires hot or fires cold. Still needs time and the Sturridge partnership will give a clearer idea.

Lambert: I had 0 expectations of him. Let's he honest, he's only at Liverpool to complete the fairytale story. That being said, 4m and he's the least of our worries. Just hope he gets his goal sooner or later.

A lot of these signings are average or below. I probably would've signed none of these if I had a say. I'm a huge fan of Brendan but I don't trust him with money. A director of football could be the solution (as with Udinese, Roma), or it will make matters worse (Spurs).

Players I would've tried to sign would include: Begovic, Sagna, Caulker, Howedes, Diame, Fabregas, Schneiderlin, Isco, Milner, Bony, Tevez.

For the record, I think this is our best XI

        Mignolet
        Manquillo Skrtel Sakho Moreno

          Borini Sturridge
          Sterling
          Coutinho Gerrard Henderson
          Moreno Sakho Skrtel Manquillo

          Flanagan Skrtel Lovren Moreno
          Henderson Lallana Allen
          Sterling
          Sturridge Balotelli

Couts been quite good recently though.

Still have Skrtel in the first XI?
He's not had a terrible season, but i think he has to be dropped if we want to progress, he cant play the high line that Brendan wants.

          Mignolet
          Flanagan, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno
          Gerrard,
          Henderson, Lallana/Coutinho
          Sterling
          Sturridge, Balotelli

Stick with the diamond that we had success with last year, give Balo/Sturridge partnership a chance when Danny is fit, and hope the defence improves. Rodgers is at least playing a consistent CB partnership which will hopefully improve over time, with Lovren and Skrtel together, maybe they'll establish a rapport?

        My opinion:

Good: Moreno, Lambert, Lallana (overpriced), Manquillo, Can
Bad: Balotelli, Markovic (could get good), Lovren

Shame the players I rate "good" are the ones that hardly play. We need two upfront.

        Nice post man.

Fabregas being signed for 30m and Lallana 25m is pretty laughable, but Lallana really should be given more starts... Isco would have been insane, as would Cazorla, but was Isco actually available?

Balotelli firmly in the bad bracket for me. 🙂 Appreciate your case for him though.

        Good post. My thoughts:

        The (potentially very) good:

Lallana: if picked more often, and crucially in the same side as Countinho. Didn't have a pre-season and will come good. No way Isco would have left Madrid for Liverpool. Same goes for Fabregas, Players want to play for teams consistently in champions league/challenging for titles.

        Jury is out:

        Can: Needs time.

Moreno: Agree. Worrying that he could have avoided both mistakes by using his right foot! Ricardo Rodriguez would have been my shout but he would have cost double.

Manquillo: Great defender (far better than GJ). Limited on the ball but should model himself on Ivanovic who is effective through good movement rather than dribbling etc.

Lovren: Unneccessary signing if he is seen as the left sided CB (already have Sakho). Should play right of Sakho, Defence looked better in the few games they have played together. Front foot defender which is needed when pressing.

        Markovic: Shown nothing.

Balotelli: Despite body language, he has actually been working hard. Problem is decision making and shoot on site policy killing attacking moves. Can come good if taught to get head up and pass. Needs to run behind more.

        Lambert: Needs game time.

Players you would've tried to sign would include: Begovic (No) Sagna (Yes) Caulker (No way) Howedes (Yes) Diame (Yes, squad) Fabregas (wouldnt come) Schneiderlin (Definitely) Isco (wouldnt come) Milner (wouldnt come unless starter) Bony (improvement on Balotelli) Tevez (wouldnt come)

Liverpool also missed their chance to sign Eto'o. So far, he's doing much better for Everton than Balotelli is for Liverpool.

      Since when Pellegrini managed Spurs?

"10 touches in the box by Nacer Chadli in Tottenham’s win at Villa earlier today. Manuel Pellegrini opted for Roberto Soldado alongside Emmanuel Adebayor up front but as the average position map highlights, Chadli (number 22) was the furthest forward of any Spurs player on the ball, with Christian Eriksen (number 23) far more withdrawn in possession before being replaced at the break. As Spurs prepare for some kind fixtures, the 6.5-priced Chadli is now up to third amongst midfielders for touches in the box this season (50, behind Hazard and Sanchez, with 59 and 58 respectively) and is subsequently top for shots (20) inside the box. Furthermore, his six big chances are joint-top with Sanchez amongst midfielders and goes some way to explaining just why he grabbed his fifth goal of the campaign earlier today."

For what it's worth (not much), I have the same front line and Downing too. He has done me proud.

Only slight drawback with a more expensive front three is that I now have a (too) cheap MID for the upcoming GW:

          Fab, Sanchez, Downing, Wanyama (Boyd)

But they all have good fixtures so I'm willing to take that risk.

I got lucky once when Costa was out and Wanyama added 6 to my total as 1st sub.

I'm now hoping he'll get another start against LEI this week.

The island protects the source of time like a cork. The light seeping out is 'the arrow of time'. When they release more light(the wheel) they travel through time and space. The black smoke is the past. You can see the person's past in the smoke when they confront it.

Yeah, when you looked at his History and previous prices, he's ridiculously priced at 10.2 atm! but I don't like his role nowadays plus ADM is arguably a better pick at 10.1 cheaper.

Same, have held off Sanchez for long enough. A couple of GWs ago it was a question of Baines or Sanchez in...got Baines in.

Last GW it was deciding whether to bring Sanchez in for Sterling but felt wasn't worth a hit.

Lesson learned - just got him in anyway this week..feck it if he has tough fixtures! 😀 Downing isn't too shabby a pick for the fixtures I guess!

In my work mini league, one of the lads let his 12 yo son play in it. The swine was leading for half the season last year with Yaya and Ramsey 🙂 I caught him in the end!

As usual, I had a terrible first 4-5 weeks but am now pulling myself up the rankings.

Anybody else tend to follow this pattern every year?

I'm genuinely considering next year just picking a starting squad with all the highest % ownership players. At least I can guarantee an 'average' start that way!

I guess that could be something to do with enforced wildcarding/ proactive transfers (because you are forced to sell)

            Or just complacency?

Mind you a friend of mine has quit this year. no transfers for the last 3 weeks because he got about 30 points in the aguero4goal week. That's a shame because I'm sure he could've pulled it back.

Wildcards have saved my bad starts

              Wildcards ruined my good starts

This is nothing on last season though. I was around 2 millionth after 5 gws last year, and only entered 100k in about GW35, finishing 28k.

            What a grind!

It does seem that wildcards are best used early rather than holding.

This year I was sure I'd hold onto it, thinking my team was OK. Then last week I spontaneously (and probably unsensibly!) activated it and it worked wonders. Don't think I'll ever hold it beyond GW10 in future.

Last year or maybe the year before that, the FPL winner used his WC in gw2!

I was thinking about holding to it for the DGWs but had to play it as my team was completely shite

        5.5k yay! 😀

Why does Moore (0min) show up in my point-squad when Duff (1point) was my second sub while my first sub Hutton didn't play either??

lol, yea! Not doing remotely as much trannie wise compared to my last two seasons - must be luck and the lack of hits I guess!

                No 9 in Germany tho!!!
