Granville and I make a New Year return to the ScoutCast studio, battered and bruised by the events of Gameweek 20 which saw us both inexplicably bench Harry Kane and his 18-point haul.

Having wasted our big differential and haunted by constant reminders, my co-host and I struggle to make a recovery. Spitting the pips from our sour grapes, we do our best to justify our doomed decision-making, before attempting to salve the wounds with talk of the Winter Wildcard refresh around the usual batch of regulars.

Feel the frustration via this link or swallow the bitter pill via the handy player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

  1. The case for Costa

The way I see the whole Costa vs. Fab thing.

Although Fab has more points with a lower price, you have to consider the other options in midfield. There are so many budget options that are performing, e.g. Downing, Siggy, Chadli, AJ etc. that are all decent alternatives. Then there are the two heavy hitters that are virtually essential (Hazard and Alexis). Then Walcott, Silva and hopefully ADM are all staking a claim for a midfield position.

Up front, there are less consistent scorers. Everyone will have Aguero and Kane, but apart from that, there are no consistent scorers at any price (RVP is inconsistent, Falcao lacks fitness, Rooney plays deep, QPR have poor fixtures, Giroud is also inconsistent and would mean an Arsenal double up). So for me, the third strikers place is for Costa. Yes, he his poor value but at least you know he will score goals, and he did remind us the other week that he still has 10+ scores in him.

So basically, since there are so little options up front, Costa seems the better option over Fab due to the abundance of midfield options.

Also, a lot of us have lots of value tied up in Costa that we would lose if we sold.

Agreed. I loathe Costa and honestly don't rate him all that highly. But it's the lack of options up top that has me considering him.

        Exactly.

I do rate Costa although I don't like his dirty, niggly style of play.

"I loathe Costa". Why? What has he done to you? Did he kill someone?

"I don't rate him all that highly". You are a bad judge then. Look at his record last season when his 27 La Liga goals (1 less than Messi, 4 less than Ronaldo) took Atletico to their first league win since 1996 and his 8 CL goals (same as Messi) took them to the CL final.

There is plenty of rubbish written on here but these casual comments are some of the most ridiculous.

Welcome to a site that's about Fantasy Football...not actual football.

Two possible scenarios for muppets post:

          A) He's braindead and doesn't think a Chelsea player is good at football.
          B) He was talking in FPL terms...

His behaviour minus the biting is Suarez level embarrassing.

And he's a limited player, most a poacher. Which leads to him being very hit and miss in FPL.

Have you ever actually seen him play? Or are you just talking out of you rear end?

According to the independent CIES Football Observatory, Costa is the 4th most valuable player in the world. Above Aguero, above Sterling, above Pogba, above value and above Fabregas.

They estimate Costa's current value at £66m.

Not bad for a "limited player". But you are welcome to your uninformed opinion.

They got him for that fee because he had a €38m release clause in his contract.

I assume you refer to the Playstation game which I have never played it in my life. I am probably older than you are so you misfired on that one.

I have seen Costa play live 10 or 12 times this season. So I'm talking from the evidence of my own eyes. Your opinions, however, seem to be casual and sweeping generalisations which you don't expect to have challenged.

The attempt to paint me as an unintelligent outsider ("look, it's a new user no-one's heard of") is classic bullying behaviour. But you picked the wrong person.

I don't care how many times you've seen him. Your post citing the valuations was laughable. And you actually mentioned him in the same sentence with Messi and Ronaldo prior to that. You're as bad or worse than the Fifa fanboys whether you've played the game or not.

My post re. valuations is factual. The CIES study has been reported in a number of newspapers.

My post about his goalscoring last season is also factual. The comparison with Ronaldo and Messi is reasonable too as they were by far the top three scorers in La Liga and all three featured in the UEFA CL 18-man squad of the season last year.

Meanwhile all you have to offer is bombast to support your original, ignorant comments (which were what started this all off).

I mean, what are you on about? Defending the honor of a player who behaves like a stunted cretin as if you were his agent or his mum. Bizarre. Or perhaps you are. Who knows.

And no, those are not facts. Those are fachts. After all I just saw a list of values the other day that claimed far different to yours. But yours is factual. Why? Because they gave themselves a fancy name? Jaysus.

And don't pretend you weren't drawing a line from this so called valuation to his goal scoring record in La Liga last season. It was obvious. And what does that even matter in a footballing world where David Luiz is worth 50m quid and intergal to Brazil while Miranda and Luis are left out of the squad entirely. So sod off with your fachts.

I see Fab and Haz plus defender outscoring defender plus plus Costa, will be tight but bonus points will decide it imo, also if you have a good TV you can have Aguero Kane Giroud plus a solid defense and 4 big hitter mids, ARS fixtures sway it for me too, Giroud and Sanchez double up after City looks dynamite

Yes, I agree with you, that Fab, Haz, defender willl probably just outscore Haz, Costa, defender.

However, my point that I made above is that the midfielder that you get instead of Fabregas (if you go with the second option) is likely to outscore the striker you have instead of Costa (if you went with the first option).

Good point well made. I would also dare to suggest that Costa has been under performing so far. Often new signings take a little while to adjust to the EPL, I'll predict a strong second half of the season for Costa

I wouldn't say he has underperformed, 14 goals in the first half of the season is decent, especially for a new striker from La Liga. Yes I think he'll have a good second half of the season as long as he avoids injury.

                What barren spell?

He is playing football, not fantasy football. FPL is only an inaccurate simulation of what goes on on the pitch.

On the pitch he has been adjusting to playing in a team with a very different style to what he's used to. Despite that he has 14 goals in 17 PL games. That's a 30 goal a season striker, right there. And he is now playing his best football since arriving at Chelsea.

I'm speaking mainly from an FPL point of view. His assists should increase for a start, he hasn't gotten many of those so far, and I. A team like Chelsea he should be getting more. Also he should have the ability to get more than 1 goal in a game coupled with a yellow card.

Now I'm not saying he's done badly, I'm saying he can still do better, particularly in an FPL sense

The only thing, is that are good budget forwards who are performing just as well, if not better in recent weeks, than Costa. So, it's a bit of the same thing. But, that doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to have Costa on my team. In fact, the more I think about it, it may be time to bring him in.

Perhaps going forward, those two might not produce as well as Costa, but they have been more than stellar replacements for quite a stretch. I'm definitely considering Costa more after reading the points made above. Actually just opened FPL site to tinker with the options related to getting him in.

Yes but as seen throughout the season, budget forwards have gone on and off the boil (e.g. Naismith, Ulloa, Berahino etc.) so at least with Costa at least you know what you are getting (more or less 6ppg).

Yeah. You're probably right. I have Fab, Hazard and Terry, and I'm wondering if it would be more sensible to get Terry out for Costa. Kind of a tough one, that. Any recommendations anyone?

I'd hold for a few weeks and see how Chelsea respond defensively to their loss to spurs. If they go back to their old defensive form, I'd get rid of fab for Costa.

So what if you have value tied up in Costa? The overall leader has a TV of 103.5m. It means buggerall.

The 4 highest overall scorers are Hazard,Sanchez, Siggurdson and Fabregas. Kun is 5th. So selling Cesc and opting for Costa at 2m more makes absolutely no sense.

Hazard/Sanchez/Siggurdson/Cesc/ADM is the way to go.

When did I say Cesc is the way to go?

Basically, my point is that Costa is the better option as there are less consistent options up front, whereas in midfield there are a wide array of decent options in a range of prices.

Who would the. Be a better sub? A midfielder in a 343? Or a forward in a 352? I believe it is the former. This is relevant when things change and the forwards inevitably start doing better. Having Kane and fodder as 2 of your 3 forwards is asking for trouble.

There's a perfect example. Danny Sturridge (if he returns and remains injury free which I sadly have concerns over) brings himself and Sterling on the radar (prefer Raheem when he has a striker in front of him).

Falcao is strengthening, ADM returning could place both of them on the radar, RVP's form may either improve or falter which could bring Roo back up top for a while.

Aguero returning, Bony joining (some may go for him or alternatively Gomis now that he'll have more time).

Then of course Chelsea, 3 attacking options there.

The smaller teams, will more bargains emerge? Vokes could come onto radars along with Ings etc.

                Plenty to think about 😀

Think United are a team to avoid this year.

No stand out reliable scorer, points shared and all quite expensive.

Sturridge fit and firing would be great for fpl.

Keep an eye out, I think a switch in formation is possibly on the cards and they tend to do better. Realistically there will be 3 or 4 players mostly involved in the goals, similar enough to the likes of Chelsea.

The 3rd big hitter in midfield should be interesting. Nearly all will have Hazard and Sanchez but ADM, Cesc, Silva and Theo could all compete for that 3rd spot. Seeing quite a lot of teams without Costa too.

Yes, but in that case there will only be one or two attackers you'll really want to do well. Meanwhile, bar Chelsea defender, we'll be shouting for cleanies more.

Its a bit of both really, there will be one or two attackers that you'll want to do well and one or two defenders. Bear in mind most play 7 attackers and 4 defs and attackers generally have more potential for high scores.

Same old story though. For the last few years Arsenals midfield and attack has been touted as one of the best around, but as soon as they don't have possession they fall to pieces. Still, they'll be exciting to watch, really hope Ozil finally finds his feet.

Basically said that Evans being found guilty and constantly claiming his innocence was the same as the fans at hillsborough being initially blamed for the tragedy but yet claiming their innocence. A very very very bad analogy

They do generate a f**k ton of revenue through sponsors. They are pretty sustainable imo, especially with their strong brand.

They have zero chance of signing Bale though 😀

Di Maria and Valdes signing does make them more attractive to players though. Big name signings are what United have lacked for a while.

Didn't mean sustainable financially, they are solid on that basis.

They aren't playing consistently, no game plan or format, shitty defence, RVP is not sharp enough. I can see them finishing between 4-6 this season

Finishing 3rd could be mainly due to their main rivals flopping more than they do...pool spurs etc.

Imo is how many pts they are from the top that matters

Love the way people always assume other players are just sitting their waiting to be signed as if other teams arent interedted or their current club aremt trying their best to hold onto players.

It's quite a volatile market where anything can happen. Surprises happen all the time. Perhaps a bit of wishful thinking is to blame for some of the optimism when it comes to dreaming about who your favorite club might bring in. It's just all a part of the game. A lot goes on behind the scenes that none of us could know.

pretty much everywhere in the world where it's allowed to eat pigs, had ham and cheese is a top seller. there's a reason for that. sometimes the simple ones are best.
with a little strong mustard and maybe onions, you can't beat the ham and cheese, (preferably toasted)

In no particular order, I don't presume:
              1. Meatball sub (meatballs, marinara, mozzarella cheese on a sliced open quality loaf of bread)
              2. Baguette, butter and brie or camembert.
              3. BLT - (maybe add a little sliced turkey in there.)
              4. Pulled pork and cole slaw on a bun
              5. Burger (not sure if this exactly is a sandwich. If so, you could add fried/breaded chicken or pork on a bun to the list.)
              6. Smoked brisket with any number of combos.

              Whoops, that's six.

Tough one... I'm considering getting Costa in now, but would find it hard to drop Hazard or Fabregas. But I do also really want a Chelsea defender.

So you're worried Alexis will be played 'on the wing" so your plan is to get Walcott instead.

since they're both playing the same position, Walcott playing for 2.1m less is nice.

and we know Wally is a proven FPL asset. Alexis is showing himself to be definitely, but he hasn't had a full season

That's crazy talk tbh when Sanchez is second only to Aguero in FPL this year.

Not that I don't like the Wally pick, but Sanchez is season keeper.

                        like CptCrunch said..

                        it's not Alexis vs Wally

                        it's Alexis + player vs Wally + 2m-more-expensive-player

                        OR

                        Alexis + player A + player B vs Wally + more expensive player C + more expensive player D

And with that price decrease, Azpilcueta's value increased. 6.1m for a Chelsea defender now. Awesome.

His price decreased for a reason. Faces constant rotation risk from Luis and doesn't offer much going forward.

Mourinho loves Azpilcueta. He should play nearly all matches. I'm happy to take 1-2 benches over the season, he doesn't make cameos.

Azpil is pretty good at getting baps and does venture forward quite often.

Azpi out for me. He's my third Chelsea player and I want Hazard in for Yaya.

Not sure I've had that much out of him while owning. Been disappointing.

Yeah, I hoped he'd got his rotation out of the way before the xmas fixtures. Think it might be more of the same in future, but if you don't need the funds or a third Chelsea spot then why not hold.

                  I wouldn't be, not from a 6.1m defender.

Yes he gets the odd BAP, but he often prefers to pass it to Hazard instead of crossing, hence little attacking threat.

You lot are a fickle bunch. Azpi is solid value at 6.1m. Sure, those 15 pointers from Terry are much preferred, but 4-5 games with no Terry goals and suddenly you're looking at Azpi with envy given the 0.5m+ price difference.

Before Terry went on his goal scoring run, Azpi was the che defender every one was recommending. Terry owners were fairly annoyed when Azpi got the assist and scored 7 more points over 3 matches. Of course, Azpi's will appear useless if Terry keeps on scoring, but let's also have a discussion when Terry stops scoring.

Excellent point. Terry has only recently usurped Azpi as the 1st choice Chelsea defender. People have short-term memories I guess. Luis had a few starts over xmas so that probably shook people up too.

If Pelle plays him at all this weekend given his first full training session, with a knee brace, was today then he's stupider than I realised. Aguero will wind up limping off again.

those knee braces do absolutely nothing to protect you in pivot sports. if he's ready for training he's nearly ready for real play.

Well, not nothing because then they wouldn't bother with them.

He's just ready for real training today. He'll have another session tomorrow and then Everton. He has a bit of a history of coming back from an injury and getting hurt again. I think it'd be really foolish, unless they are desperate, to play him.

There is no brace that will protect you in a pivot sport. If anything it is just for mental piece of mind.

I agree it would be stupid to play him this weekend though.

I'm not saying it will protect him in terms of rotation etc. I agree there, there's nothing really that can help that but it may just be an overall stability provider instead of protection.

Watch him play now 😉 Pelle always rushes players back.

Like Couts, Siggy, Jelavic, Cisse, Sissoko in January's past? It would have been a mistake not to. They play above their potential more often than not, due to being in such a fresh environment. They want to prove themselves.

Most will only have to ditch their third striker and a premium mid for a hit though. We all know that an Aguero (c) can more than make up for it. This would leave wildcard intact.

It depends on how your cash is spread around. You could be chasing your tail for weeks trying to reallocate funds where you want them, whereas you can do it in one fell swoop with the WC. I want to assess the likes of Walcott and perhaps Sturridge before I play mine.

I held off on Rooney because of the matchup. If ADM does play, I, for some reason, feel like it will be a better type of game for him. Rooney will likely be tucked back, while ADM will have license to bomb forward. Of course, that's if he plays. I just feel he will, but no way to really know until it comes.

That as well. Too many goal scorers and assisters at United is also a problem. Points will be spread around and ADM doesn't have much of a goal threat. Then there is his ridiculous price tag

I know one thing. When I didn't have him early on when he was on his streak, it was painful. He was so dangerous during that run that it soon became clear I had to pick him up. That's kind of what I'm hoping for now. Sometimes, you gotta take a risk in this game....and this one, I think, is educated enough for me to feel good about it. You could be right, though. 'Tis hard to predict these things.

He had an unsustainable record though. Something like 6 shots and having scored from 4 of them or something ridiculous. It was never sustainable and its typical of his general lack of goal threat.

Worthy thought process, that. I like the thought of assists coming his way if nothing else. Some good talent to dish it to, and like I said, the fixtures are pretty dandy. Guess we will see how it all unfolds. Interesting to see how Man U comes together in general. Lots of talent up front, and while the defense hasn't exactly been letting in tons of goals, it is interesting to think what the team could be with a stronger backline. I think LVG is getting the club back in shape.

If I were to use an analogy, Manchester United is like a vintage, classic car that mixes style with power. The car fell into a bit of disrepair as of late, but the improvements that need to be made to get it back to its former glory are....well....being made.

Rojo and Blind need to get back in the fold. Think they would help with the Defensive sloppiness.
