Our members articles analysing last season are completed today with a review of West Ham’s performances. The Hammers entered 2014/15 in reasonable health, having finished 13th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, although they only gained 40 points and did flirt with the relegation zone before finally confirming their top-flight status.

Plenty of changes were made in both playing and coaching personnel at Upton Park last summer, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho brought in, while Teddy Sheringham joined up as an attacking coach. Cheikhou Kouyate and Aaron Cresswell were also signed, while Carl Jenkinson and Alex Song moved to the Hammers on season-long loans.

In this members article, we asses the main goal threats and creators in Sam Allardyce’s final year at the helm and also compare the team’s attacking numbers to the previous year.

    Liverpool pre-season round up
    Thai All Stars 0-4 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Markovic, Sakho, Lallana, Origi
    • Assists: Teixeira (2), Henderson (2)

    Brisbane Roar 1-2 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Lallana, Milner
    • Assists: Milner, Henderson

    Adelaide United 0-2 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Milner, Ings
    • Assists: Ibe, Clyne

    Malaysia XI 1-1 Liverpool:
    • Goal: Ibe
    • Assist: Origi

    HJK Helsinki 0-2 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Origi, Coutinho
    • Assists: Milner (2)

    Swindon 1-2 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Benteke, Ojo
    • Assists: Teixeira, Toure

    Formations used:
    • 4-2-3-1
    • 4-diamond-2
    • 4-3-3

The quality of the oppositions this pre-season was underwhelming to say the least but what’s impressed me:
    • The high press for large parts of the game, from the strikers and midfielders. Notably from Henderson, Milner and Ings.
    • The fluidity and understanding of Henderson and Milner, it seems their partnership has already formed.
    • The width provided by Ibe and Clyne on the right – it’s added a different dimension to our style of play.

    Be wary…:
    • James Pearce from the Liverpool Echo said that Skrtel—Sakho is the first choice CB partnership, but went back on his word yesterday and insists that Rodgers favours Lovren.
    • Hendo vs Milner could be a case of them taking turns to outscore one another in fantasy football terms
    • Ibe has been brilliant, the standout player, but he isn’t nailed. Same goes for Lallana.

    FPL prospects:
    • Mignolet, Clyne, Skrtel, Henderson, Milner, Coutinho, Benteke, when fit, are all nailed.
    • Gomez has had the nod at left back over Moreno and BR’s comments suggest he may well start the season. He comes in at 4.5m and offers a cheap way into Liverpool’s defence.
    • Henderson/Milner. Take your pick. Both are consistent and reliable. Both shared set piece duties as well. (Note: the likes of Coutinho, Firmino will also take corners).
    • I *THINK* Henderson is on penalties. If not, then Benteke is. We won’t know for sure until Liverpool get one.
    • Ibe at 5m could be a punt worth taking as a 5th midfielder. By no means nailed, but certainly a threat going forward and seems to be in favour for the short term at least.
    • Benteke at 8.5m is good value for money, in my opinion. (Considering Kane’s and Giroud’s respective prices). I also think he’ll start gameweek 1, we’ll have to look out for BR’s comments in the press conference.

I’ll post a predicted line up for the Stoke game towards the end of the week. Hope this was informative. 

      Predicted line-up:

      - Bib theory seems to have been ditched, finally!
      - BR gave very little away in the press conference.
      - Allen is out for 3-4 weeks though. Flanagan to be back by Christmas. Sturridge to be back for September.
      - Milner confirmed as vice captain.
      - This is only a prediction, so could be wrong.

      4-2-3-1.

      ----------------Mignolet
      --Clyne---Skrtel--Lovren---Gomez.
      ---------Henderson--Milner------------
      ------Ibe------Coutinho-----Lallana---
      ----------------Benteke-------------------

Of course Coutinho may miss out on a starting place for a 3rd CM, or Lovren for Sakho. But as things stand, I think this is the team for Sunday against Stoke.

After the community shield game, what's the consensus on the best Arsenal 8.5 mid :

    A) Cazorla
    B) Ramsey
    C) Ozil

Cazorla, to be honest. He's always overlooked but produced wonderfully for me last season and he seems to still be central to chances. Doesn't really matter where he plays.

Really liking Ramsey, naturally gets in great attacking positions and is better finisher by a country mile compared to ozil. With that said, already have Santi just cause of Pens +set pieces.

    The BAPs are in!....

    Ox 3
    Kosc 2
    Mert 1

    ARSENAL
Koscielny was a beast in the game with 19 CBI (16 clearances, 2 blocks & 1 interception) which was just shy of the whole Chelsea team combined (24). Mert in comparison got 8 CBI but his passing bonus edged the 1 BP over the full backs. Oxlade got the winning goal in a 1-0 game so was always likely to pick up something. Walcott misses out as the 12 BPS for the assist matches that of a defender clean sheet, but he didn't pick up BPS points for the defensive dirty work.

    Full BPS:

    Cech 23

    Bellerin 21
    Kosc 29
    Mert 27
    Monreal 25

    Coquelin 4
    Cazorla 11
    Ramsey 15
    Ox 30
    Ozil 12

    Walcott 17
    ------
    Giroud 1
    Arteta 3
    Gibbs 2

    CHELSEA
Stats wise, Hazard had a shocker of a game and got the lowest rating on whoscored and a BPS score of just 5. Courtois made 5 saves which meant he gained 10 BPS, putting him 2nd overall for Chelsea BPS. Perhaps this season goalkeepers who manage 8 or 9 saves may pick up bonus even without clean sheets as that would bring them to around 25-30 BPS in total. Matic was busy in his deeper role for Chelsea so picked up 22 BPS. Ivan was the worse BPS performer in the Chelsea defence as he had a lower pass percentage (only one under 80%) and had two shots off target.

    Full BPS:

    Courtois 16

    Ivanovic 7
    Cahill 12
    Terry 13
    Azpi 11

    Ramires 11
    Matic 21
    Willian 12
    Fabregas 14
    Hazard 5

    Remy 1
    -----
    Oscar 4
    Falcao -3
    Zouma 6
    Moses 2

    Stats from
    http://www.whoscored.com/Matches/956052/LiveStatistics/England-Community-Shield-2014-2015-Arsenal-Chelsea
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33667216

Just a note that 'Recovery' stats unavailable so BPS is not included for them but I doubt it would make that much difference. Successful tackles not defined so I have just used a rough average value from last season of 50% for total tackles. I assume 'Open Play Crosses' are successful crosses as well so 1 BPS for each of those.

No; Ozil doesn't like to shoot, Cazorla plays too deep, Walcott is not secure, Ramsey has no set pieces. I suggest Coquelin.

That Dick loves Coates.. Muniesa could be a bargain.. Mertesacker + 0.5 could be worth it over kosc.. Milner has integrated well in the pool attack.. My Fabregas +2.5 over Hazard punt may well be worth it until the Wildcard

Rooney(always starts well and will play up front)
Pelle (could explode with good fixtures like last season)
go on a good budget striker who gets the goals for their club

Anyone looking for a Sunderland defender Coates is your man. He's my pick of the 4.5m options.

Jones looks good to start season too but could be dropped/rotated at any point.

      Cheers for the info!

You reckon PvA's not worth the extra 0.5 over him? I realy want a SUN defender, I'm on PvA at the moment, but the 0.5 would work wonders in my team...

If you're not desperate for an extra 0.5m then get PVA as always good chance of attacking points, otherwise coates should be solid enough and might get the odd bonus.

He created space with his run and held the ball up well. His positional play was excellent. Far better than Walcott. Not even close

His assist was just a simple pass; the Ox did everything else. Chamberlin actually got the goal, and why would you put in a striker for a holding midfielder?

Coquelin is a DM, the team looks a lot worse without him. It is not a fair comparison.
Ox Chambo got the goal and was probably the most threatening player on the pitch and Walcott only got the assists because Ox scored out of nowhere.
I am not saying that Ox will play although I think he should.

Walcott was rubbish at ST today but so was Giroud. And he did really well there at the end of last season.

      For me it's Cedric.

      - 2 career goals in 91. He's a defender of course, but he won't be getting you many goals.
      - Right back. Don't the new BPS scoring favour centre backs?
      - Southampton also bought right back Cuco Martina. Will there be competition from him?
      - Card magnet apparently. 10 yellows last season I've heard? (Forgive me/correct if that's wrong)
      - Southampton have lost Schneiderlin, a key holding midfield player. Will they be as strong defensively?

This isn't a thread to slag off Cedric. I'd like to hear your feedback on why he's a popular pick, and also reply to the original post with some other players that appear popular on these parts that in your opinion aren't.

I can definitely see the Ritchie appeal. Bournemouth's most influential player last season. A lot of goals and assists. Seems attacking. Quite cheap.

Not in my team, but could be this year's Charlie Adam.

ALL PLAYERS WILL BLANK A FEW TIMES DURING THE SEASON. WHEN ALMOST ALL DO IT IN THE SAME GAMEWEEK, IT IS TOUGH TO TAKE, BUT THAT'S JUST THE DARK SIDE OF PROBABILITY.

I'm also wondering, an arsenal attacker seems essential, for me it's between him, ozil, and Rambo

Good argument, but I thought he seemed pretty absent from the game. Subbed off just after 60 minutes. Wouldn't have scored any bonus and had a very low BPS (see a few pages back).

Just saying, he had a very poor game today despite the assist.

Giroud played quite well when he came on for Walcott. Got into better positions, missed a few chances, but at least he got into positions for the chances. I recall one Walcott header on goal, that's about it?

I know what he's capable of, he's still in my team, but I'm not as sure of him as I was yesterday.

Yep, he was very 'absent' for most of the game, he doesn't have much of a presence playing as a striker.

But can look at it from this way too: He was "absent" for most of this game and still comes out with 6 points. If he picks up form even a little bit against a non-league champion team, then how can you not have him in your team.

Wenger doesn't care how many fantasy points he gets. Yes, he passed it to Oxlade-Chamberlain. That was one of his two passes in the whole first half. (Source: Opta https://twitter.com/OptaJean/status/627853524781670400)

Sanchez didn't feature. There's a lot of competition in the Arsenal midfield and if he keeps underperforming, he won't get the chance against weaker teams.

Gone off him as it stands, doesn't look good up front and I doubt he will play the full 90..it's the uncertainty that has put me off though, if he was playing the full 90 and on the wing I'd have him in.
