Our last glance at Gameweek 2 highlights Sergio Aguero’s irresistible display against Chelsea and Everton’s improvement in the final third, whilst the champions’ sluggish start to the season has made their prime Fantasy asset surplus to requirement for many.

The Player

It took Sergio Aguero just ten seconds to convince Jose Mourinho that Chelsea were in for a torrid time at the Etihad last Sunday.

Slipped through for a one-on-one with Asmir Begovic, the Argentine fluffed his lines on that occasion but ultimately tormented the champions with seven attempts on goal, grabbing his first of the season with a display that forced the Blues boss to haul off John Terry at the break.

Overlooked by many for the start of the season due to his late return to summer training, the race is now on to acquire Aguero in light of his weekend performance. Already snapped up by over 195,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers this week, the City striker has risen to 13.1 as we look to his fixture-proof appeal to arrest – what has been for many – a poor start to the Fantasy campaign.

With Raheem Sterling adding speed to the City flank and David Silva dazzling in the middle, City look a force of nature right now. Having fired six past West Brom and Chelsea – sides that racked up 16 and 17 shut-outs in 2014/15 respectively – Manuel Pellegrini’s men are in irresistible form and, in Aguero, they possess a player capable of unlocking the meanest of defences.

The upcoming schedule could hardly be kinder, either. With a trip to Everton preceding clashes with Watford, Palace, West Ham, Spurs, Newcastle and Bournemouth, Aguero’s armband appeal could barely be stronger. Finding the cash to acquire him looks vital as we turn to the reliable Argentine to fire our ailing Fantasy sides back up the rankings.

The Team

It’s easy to forget that Everton finished fifth in their first season under Roberto Martinez in 2013/14.

With the added hassle of Europa League duties to contend with last time out, the Toffees struggled to cope with a packed schedule that even saw them flirt with the relegation places before steadying the ship in the final few months of the campaign. Having stuttered to an eleventh-placed finish last term, the Merseysiders can concentrate solely on domestic matters this year.

Judging by their 3-0 win at St Mary’s last Saturday lunchtime, a lack of European action could prove beneficial for Martinez and Fantasy managers alike. The Saints conceded a mere 13 times at home last year but were swept aside as Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku tore apart Ronald Koeman’s backline. At a time where many highly-owned assets are struggling to justify our collective show of faith, the Toffees duo have already served up two goals and an assist apiece as Everton waste no time in reminding us of their capabilities. Factor in the 5.1-priced Arouna Kone’s goal and pair of assists from the right and it’s easy to see why the Merseysiders have been subject to major bandwagons at the start of the season.

Can they maintain these displays, though? Up next is a perfect storm of form versus fixtures which is set to test the Merseysiders’ mettle. Having emerged from St Mary’s triumphant, Everton now face an extraordinarily tough run (MCI, tot, CHE, swa, wba, LIV, MUN, ars) which may well limit their potential. Whilst many will be prepared to hold until the schedule smiles kinder in Gameweek 11, their weekend display suggests that Everton may be an altogether different proposition under Martinez this time around.

The Talking Point

As Chelsea struggle for any semblance of form at both ends of the pitch, Fantasy managers are deserting Eden Hazard in their droves.

After just two rounds of fixtures, the Belgian’s mere two attempts on goal have persuaded many to look elsewhere as Jose Mourinho’s men stumble out of the blocks.

Certainly, there are no shortage of in-form alternatives. City’s aforementioned run of fixtures has elevated Aguero, David Silva, Sterling and Yaya Toure in our thinking, with many seeking to acquire two or even three of Manuel Pellegrini’s main men in light of their opening displays. With Alexis Sanchez looking electric on the Arsenal left, Hazard’s lofty 11.5 price tag is proving the obvious source of funds to facilitate such moves.

There’s no doubting Hazard’s quality. He has, after all, racked up 14 goals and ten assists in each of the last two seasons and will eventually return to our radars but with Chelsea currently toiling, we cannot afford to carry a premium-priced player as a passenger right now. With Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez boasting both the returns and underlying statistics to justify his inclusion as a viable fourth midfielder, the decision to part company with the Belgian has been made that little bit easier.

Structuring our squads to offer an easy route back for Hazard looks a sensible option and the acquisition of either Silva or Sanchez opens an easy route for his return. For now, though, the exodus is picking up pace as we place our faith in the form players until Hazard, and Chelsea, can rediscover their title-winning spark.

Can see plenty of people moaning about their pre WC team outscoring their WC teams this time next week.

Not much risk, as at least the W/C allows us to load up on the desired 3 City players and still punt on Rooney plus hold Haz if desired.

Are the majority of people who don't want to wildcard this week, looking at doing it after gw 4 in the int. break? Or even further down the line?

If it's the former, i'm not sure current wildcarders are at too much of a disadvantage, given most even welcome the idea that the wildcard be scrapped. Got to remember the fixtures were really awkward, making it hard to get a squad you really liked prior to gw 1, plus the uncertainty of sanchez and aguero. Both are fit and firing now, so it's much easier to build a squad around them if you wanted. Can save a free transfer ahead of gw 4, and then also get 2 frees during the int. break to lessen the advantage the gw 4 wildcarders have, and even take a -4 for a mini-wildcard if some of your picks don't turn out to be too great.

    tl;dr:

I think when you wildcard is overrated, it's more important to just pick a good squad that you're happy with, and when you complete it, that there's no doubts about returning players, or players you want later on.

i'm planning on WCing between GW 13 and 19. Means i only have to handle a WCless team for under 20 GWs. People WCing now got to survive till GW 32 or so without one in order to make full use of the bench boost chips etc

Yes, that's all true. However do you think surviving till gw 32, is as scary as it's made out to be? Higher valued teams could get by easier, and nothing wrong with taking the odd hits down the line.

I wanted to save it for later (for the inevitable transfer/form crisis) which happens at some point. Or last week I played it after the close of transfer window which was really effective. So I'm so reluctant. But even with Aguero already in my team, I am really, really tempted to try and steady the ship now.

I agree, I think the key after an early WC is to bank next transfer to keep always 2 up your sleeve. Then like you said there is always the option to 'mini' wildcard for -4 or -8 point hit. I fully expect to earn much more than 8 points over next 5-7 weeks on my WC team. It's a bargain in the long run and with the changes to the second WC rule imo.

Agree with you. Covering the hits over the next 5-7 weeks with your wildcard is a good point, and i'd be confident of doing that too.

My plan was to WC after GW4 for the International break, but last night I realised there was very little advantage to waiting the extra 2 weeks given all the price rises I'd be missing out on. Have gone for the WC this week and had the same thought as you: 2FTs for the int break should be enough.

WC'ing now seems a bit like a manager bringing on a sub after 5 minutes after going 2-0 down to two freak goals

After gw 11 was the plan.

      Sticking to it for now.

Though I gree with you on WCing now rather than next gw or gw 4 as the price movements are mental and some form players having good fixtures have emerged.

Aren't price changes going to be mental GW4 as well though? Not only because it is twice the length due to international break, but those WC'ing now will assumingly save FT GW3 and use 1 or 2 GW4, and WC transfers don't count towards price rises/falls so will be more movement if people have WC'ed already? Plus transfer window is still open, and international period = injuries as well?

I'll wait until my team needs it. No planned date to use it.

I'll have Sanchez, Aguero + 2 other city attackers by GW4, so am hoping it's just my defence that needs to be fixed GW5 onwards!

Arsenal vs Liverpool - Disregards any of their players as my captain.
Even though aguero is back i have him in my side but can only see him maybe getting 1 goal id be tempted to say that lukaku will get more points this week than aguero.
United's only real forward is rooney who i had as my captain the first 2 gws and have no lost hope so thatll probably be massive karma against me so he may be the best bet.
Chelsea have started poor and will find it hard away to west brom, tony pulis is a class manager and will have his side firing to go and continue chelseas bad start.
So out of the top sides nothing is really that appealing in my opinion.
Therefore i may go for something outside the box to see if it pays off and gets me an advantage on people in my league! Fingers crossed.

Just think he's been figured out. Will be triple teamed most games. Not a prospect this year as he was last. But ofcourse there will be games where he goes nuts but i dont think it'll be against a Pulis side.

Not looking like thrashing anyone at the moment tbh, and Pulis might go for a very compact structure.

Hazard a decent pick in that match, but I wouldn't back him to get anything over a goal at the moment.

      B.

Firstly Hendo has some sort of niggling injury.

Secondly Hendo seems to be the withdrawn mid out of him and Milner.

Thirdly, Payet is on a majority of set pieces, we aren't really sure what Hendo is on these days with Milner and Benteke lurking about.

    Kompany Vs Kolarov,

Firstly I'm no expert at formatting so please bear with me :
So far from 12/13 until this weekend the most any City defender could have played is 10440 minutes, I've done some very basic digging into our 2 men of the moment, I found it useful and thought I'd share it.

Key points, neither player has come remotely close to playing all games at any point during the last 3 campaigns (Kompany injury and Kolarov rotation). However they are both currently in cracking form there is still an inherent risk with either player.

    Komp Kola
    Mins 6813 4702
    GS 7 4
    A 1 14
    CS 29 23
    OG 2 0
    YC 17 11
    RC 2 0
    Baps 17 26
ppm 0.042 0.059 (points per minute)

Kompany has missed 14 games in 14/15, 15 in 13/14, and 10 in 12/13 through injury. Kolarov has missed 14 games in 3 seasons through injury. Kolarov also has a higher ceiling, hoovers baps and is on set-pieces.

Kompany averages attacking returns (Goal or assist) every 851 minutes, Kolarov averages returns every 261 minutes.

TLDR: Kolarov is at risk if he messes up (due to Clichy lurking), but realistically the way he is playing at the moment (especially linking with Sterling) Pelle would be an idiot to bench him. Also Kompany's injury record is far from good, I wouldn't even be surprised if Kolarov played more minutes than him this season!

Anyway there you have my lunchtime ramblings, I'm sure they made more sense in my head!

Thanks for the effort here, some good reading.

Problem I have is this thinking that because Kolarov has been playing well Pellegrini would be an idiot to bench him.

I think we've thought similar in the past and it always happens. I know there's the end of last season to look at but Clichy had an injury - might just not wanted to have risked him.

Unfortunately after 2 weeks we don't know a whole lot which is why I'll probably go Kompany. If Kolarov does nail that spot though he would be about as close to essential for a defender as you can get.

True, it is worrisome. My logic is that Sterlings pace is causing opposition defences hassle and thus not highlighting Kolarovs occasional defensive lapses . I'm taking the gamble personally but can also appreciate why some my be cautious.

Rotation might strike when CL comes in 4 weeks...

I can see Kolarov being the CL man and Clichy the PL man (if fixtures easy)

For security go for Kompany for flair go for Kolarov. Clichy is a pain

You're correct Kolaov is the flair pick, however I wanted to point out that Kompany is very unlikely to remain injury free all season. This point adds a question mark, as he cannot be as nailed as everyone thinks when he spends on average just over 28% of each season in the treatment room.

Interesting ramble. I subbed in Kolarov for Koscielny this morning. For some reason I thought that Clichy was still injured until I realised 5 minutes ago he was on the bench against Chelsea. Hope your right and that Pellegrini sees sense and doesn't drop him whilst he's performing so well. However, I can see myself wildcarding in a couple of weeks, and Clichy will still be in the back of my mind.

While I was looking at chances created I thought I'd share the players I looked up. Only 2 matches in so have to look at who has played who etc and who's to come but it's quite interesting:

    Tadic - 17.6
    Ozil - 19.9
    Cazorla - 21.1
    Shelvey - 21.1
    Montero - 24.7
    Kolarov - 26.7
    Silva 26.7
    Mahrez - 26.5
    Albrighton - 27.4
    Eriksen - 38
    Payet - 38.4
    Hazard - 47.3
    Fabregas - 56.7
    Mata - 63
    Coutinho - 175

I was mainly looking at midfielders but stuck Kolarov in there as a comparison. Surely Swansea/Leicester can't keep it up?

Ask yourself this.. do you see Chelsea challenging for the top 3 spots this season? If you do think this then you have to expect them to get points over the next 8 games and not average 1 point a game like they have.. If you think that then you got to expect goals? so defo get Hazard. Unless this is an alternate reality where Chelsea is just gonna play not to get relegate

Apologies for the delays people, but I've finally gotten around to putting together the Dead Team Competition spreadsheet for this season.

Note I haven't sorted out the scoring macros yet so the first proper update will be a little bit further off (it's not like the teams are going anywhere 😉 )

The spreadsheet can be found here ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vN0eDYVIOMSO3RSqDuw500qBTCyGgddym5bqM2tPumA/edit#gid=623776028 ) and I will endeavour to update it weekly once I've sorted the scoring system.

Everyone's teams can be found on the "Teams" tab (sorted alphabetically from the left). There are 396 teams so it will take a while to scroll over... You can also search for your name and it will take you there. I also left the "Quick Search" tab there so you can simply select your name from the list (again alphabetical) and it will display your team below (this might get bogged if loads of people are using it).

If there are any errors then let me know pronto.

Good luck and enjoy the competition!

    Crystal Palace (H)
    Everton (A)

      Fair enough against West Brom

      Palace can score, very attacking

Everton (and former Chelsea boy Lukaku) won't be easy

Arsenal will be out for goals as well

      Newcastle should be a CS

Soton depends on what team shows up

I did think he'd do that against City as well tbh. Tightening up will happen, I've no doubt, but I won't be shocked if it takes a while. Some of those defenders started to show their age in recent weeks, and the decline can be rapid.

Azpi still not a bad choice for those fixtures though.

Following on from the hit topic about Shaqiri; I expect him to do well at first, but he will soon be found out by fullbacka as they catch onto his unusual dribbling style. It's been consistently shown in the Bundesleague that whilst he has very quick feet, he always aligns his lower torso in the direction he is about to turn, giving advanced warning of his intentions.
    Shaqiri; his hips don't lie.

    I'll get my coat.

hard to ignore the price difference as it makes a difference where else you'd put it.

Either way I would probably still say Ozil as you'd expect Arsenal to score more then West Ham and both players seems similar as in they will get lots of assists but few goals.

I think the general consensus is that Man U look more solid and stable this year. I feel that they are more about LVG's possession and less likely to concede then the last couple of years. That and you can get Shaw/Darmian for 5.5/5.6

so is the theory that wildcard transfer ins do not impact the price rises still just a theory? how about the FFS community test it - considering we have a huge amount of wildcarders this week, why don't we all decide on a random player with low ownership and also not near the thresholds on either end, mass transfer him in and see if his price changes? as the wildcard is on anyway, he could be easily transferred out before the deadline.

we would finally know for sure whether wildcard transfer ins count for price rises or not. and if they do, a low ownership player could go up 0.2 giving us an extra 0.1 to spend too.

I would say based on what happened last season and what is now happening this season we can conclude with a high probability that wild card transfers do NOT impact price rises..
Last season in the week where most activated wild cards.. price prediction sites had players sitting on over 100 % for days... and the same is happening this week..

best practice is to get everyone who wants to wild card to just go ahead and do normal transfers and activate the wild card after the last price rises of the gameweek ( Sat am UK)

I keep seeing a lot of WC teams with Gomis and Diouf over Benteke.

Can people really see them outscoring Benteke?

Gomis has started brightly and Diouf has had a lot of chances and they're cheper enabling peole to upgrade elsewhere.

Is it crazy to be on WC and not have Mahrez?

And I don't mean for price rises during the week, I mean to actually stay in my squad.

Not crazy, there are many good options in midfield. He does look excellent value though.

I thought his stats were excellent last year but he never got a decent run in the team .

I'm looking at a Sanchez, Yaya, Payet and Ayew midfield. But I also want one of Sakho or Gomis so I don't know if it's wise to double up, or go with Mahrez instead or even Diouf

Haha I thought the same thing earlier.. he's the top point scorer in the game so far but surely it can't continue. Or is he the budget player of the season? 😀

Nope; I would be worried not going without him though.

The attacking stats for Leicester so far are impressive. That coupled with their fixtures, I'd go for him if I didn't have more pressing issues

      Not crazy at all.

Mahrez won't carry on this form over the season.

Ahaha look out for an article that I'm posting on Fantasy YIRMA tomorrow (will share it on here). A big part of it is fear of missing out on another Ramsey/Yaya.

Even he didn't do it for the whole season (I know he was injured) but he hasn't been able to recreate that form since.

Basically in no PL season has a midfielder from outside the top 4 scored more than 20 goals, and Leicester probably won't finish top half.

If Mahrez finishes with more than 10 PL goals he will have done amazingly well, and if you don't have him yet, you've already missed out on 2 of them.

I can't believe my eyes when looking at Kolorov's stats. He completely dominating.
I'm very tempted to get him in with the spare funds to swap to Kompany when he starts getting benched.

Yeah he is on fire - no way he will be dropped at the moment. Best full back in the league.

You know what, Ive never owned him. Even with a rise from Kompany last night, I think I'm going to treat myself to some Kolorov.

This is what agonisingly tipped me towards Kolarov in the end. He's a BAP magnet beast machine.

      Komp - 2 goals - 2 BAPS
      Kol - 0 goals, 0 assists - 4 BAPS

Given that Kol's attacking prowess is far more sustainable then I think you've got your answer.

Plus I know the risks, I am getting him knowing full well he could be benched, but how could any manager consider it.
Plus, love the "bap magnet beast machine" bit.

Apologies, I meant Kolarov instead of Kompany to enable Silva over Yaya
