With the third international break of the season upon us, we’re afforded time to assess the leading contenders in the Fantasy Football Scout leagues across a variety of games. With leagues in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Ultimate Fantasy Premier League,Sky Sports and Sun Dream Team, there’s plenty to catch up on.

FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE

Jon Mjelde surged to the top of our Scout League – and 20th in the overall rankings – by way of a 64-point haul this Gameweek. His decision to captain Romelu Lukaku paid dividends, while Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane also found the target. Although all four of Jon’s midfielders drew blanks, clean sheets from David de Gea, Virgil van Dijk and Aleksandar Kolarov bolstered his score.

Despite posting 60 points (15 above the average), Mark Kalafatas was displaced from the top spot following the last round of fixtures. The 29th-ranked manager opted for a 3-5-2 set-up, deploying Vardy and Lukaku as his strike partnership. Manuel Lanzini (1% ownership) proved to an excellent differential, while Mesut Ozil carded a handy eight points.

Samuel Slennet – who sat at the summit when we last penned a leagues round-up – sits in third place by virtue of a 57-point Gameweek. Samuel was rewarded for handing Vardy the skipper’s armband and also profited from Jack Butland’s and Daryl Janmaat’s shut-out points.

Amassing 72 points, Chris Rigden propelled himself into fourth place. A back four that included the likes of Butland and Scott Dann combined for 31 points. In the attacking positions, Ozil, Lukaku and Vardy (captain) brought home the bacon.

Rounding off the top five, Panna Fricker (65 points) also excelled on the defensive front after plumping for double Manchester City coverage (Bacary Sagna and Kolarov). Captain Harry Kane and Vardy complemented her defensive returns.

We’re pleased to say we sit in top spot in the League of Leagues as we look to defend our title for another season. To join this league use the code: 600-520

FPL MEMBERS SCOUT LEAGUE

Jon Mjelde is also the frontrunner in the Members League and boasts a 34-point lead at the top of the leaderboard.

Andrew Dougan retained his second spot from last Gameweek with a tally of 48 points. Although his Alexis Sanchez captaincy failed to hit the mark, Vardy, Lukaku, Butland and Kolarov came up trumps.

Third-place Marsel Levi was left frustrated by Wilfried Bony’s early withdrawal but still managed to accrue 50 points. Beyond a Vardy captaincy, Kolarov, Ozil and De Gea were his key performers.

The curiously named Zunker 1 will have some tinkering to do in the wake of injuries to Mamadou Sakho and Dimitri Payet. Nonetheless, they notched a respectable 48 points, owing to a Lukaku captaincy and solid returns from the likes of Vardy and Marcos Rojo.

Trev Grant edged into the top five after picking up 49 points. Owning Payet and Bony thwarted his progress, but a captained Vardy, Kolarov and Chris Smalling rescued his Gameweek.

ULTIMATE FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE

Panna Fricker’s success extends to Ultimate Fantasy Premier League ladder, where she sits in the gold-medal berth. A 60-point Gameweek elevated her to a total score of 932 – good enough for second in the overall rankings.

John Donnelly is hot on the heels of Panna with 928 points, having relinquished the top spot due to a disappointing 30-point haul. Ryan Evans slipped into third position with a score of 920, despite beating the 43-point average by five points.

Michael Wong ended this Gameweek on 915 points after tallying 63 points – no one in the top 50 surpassed that total on the weekend. Dean Howard retains a place in the top five but is now five points adrift (910) of Michael Wong.

To join this league, use the code: 1258-516.

SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL

Alan Wood (826 points) has taken a commanding lead at the peak of the Scout League, with Mark William (792) 34 points back in second place. Jeff Payne (783) is clinging onto third by a one-point margin yet has chalked up five more goals than Alan Wood.

We currently sits in fourth spot in the league of leagues as we look to defend our crown. To join this league use the league name: FFScout and the code: 8009000

SUN DREAM TEAM

Jeff Payne (776 points) enjoys a 10-point lead at the top of the table, with Chris Smalling (93) tallying the most points among his 11-man squad. He’s profited greatly from a back five comprised entirely of Manchester United defenders, although there’s work to be done with injuries to Luke Shaw and Payet.

David O Byrne (766 points) fronts the chasing pack. Amassing 103 points, Graziano Pelle has been his star man, while Alexis Sanchez’s 87 points have also been impactful. A 23-point gap between him and Tony H. (743) has opened up, with the latter harvesting 187 points from his two-man strike partnership (Harry Kane and Pelle).

Nigel Dodds (739) has loaded up with seven of Louis van Gaal’s troops, including Wayne Rooney (104 points). He’s fending off the challenge from Tim Mongiat (738), who’s just one point adrift of fourth place and also possesses a team with a distinct Man United flavour.

Bear in mind when you snipe at people that you may be putting down a child. People of all ages play.

Ah now, I am only having a bit of fun above at template posts.

In my defence if posters maybe checked above or below or on a previous page there is a very strong chance, in fact there is a 90% chance, of a Payet or price change query being answered already on a plate for them. I am not sniping at people not knowing it's more the laziness of not having a wee look around first. Agree with the sentiments of your post though.

Maybe Leicester can finish top 6... Remember Newcastle's effort for the top 4, Leicester's team is almost as good as that Newcastle team.

Also the top 4 are lacking quality bar City and Arsenal due to injuries and poor form (chelsea).

On that bombshell, surely it's worth keeping Vardy for the whole season? A worthy challenger to Harry Kane's status last year.

Yeah i do. Aside from squad depth, Leicester also lack a defence. I think they'll continue to score plenty as that's their style this season. Chelsea are awful right now, but could pick up points in the favourable fixtures now, i just don't see them staying this bad. Also they'll surely spend in Jan.

Perhaps so. I don't think you can go wrong with selling him, and finding someone with easier fixtures. But also, i see the reasons to keep, as he was bought cheap and Leicester are capable of scoring in these tough games.

True. But with Leicester and a manager in Ranieri, they stand the best chance.

Also its worth noting that changes occurs every 5 years. New top 4 will emerge, remember when Man City were nothing.. Also Liverpool lost the top 4 status.

Spurs also broke into the top 4 under Redknapp but a lot of people said can they keep this up?

my point is a team with a good attack can do very well, no matter how bad their defence was.

we would have won the league had our defence been decent, but even with the a bad defence we still managed to challenge the title. I know we had Suarez but still.

I don't think you can throw Chelsea and top four in same sentence anymore. As things stand it's City/Arsenal battling for title with Utd/Spurs/Pool the big guns going for top4. Leicester could sneak in but what they lack is squad depth and a couple of injuries could see them drop.

      1. sully29

United aren't going to be battling for the top four, they're a few steps ahead of either Liverpool or Spurs. You're right about Leicester though, the lack of depth in their squad will inevitably burn them out. Even just an injury to either Vardy or Mahrez would damage them quite a lot.

        1. djenzio
          • 11 Years
          10 years, 1 month ago

yeah, it's possible that they will have no injury but the problem with them is they are more vulnerable than bigger teams and have no depth, if they can keep Mahrez/Vardy fit they will do well.

I see Mahrez as a better option than Vardy as season keeper.

The simple reason being, there are 5 slots in the midfield as compared to 3 in strikers.

Even though Vardy is doing wonders and so as Leicester, when their form fades away and other strikers are doing good, you'll be wanting to drop Vardy for some other striker, not so the case with Mahrez, who most of us bought as their enabling midfielder anyway and can keep with those two extra slots being there.

Not hugely bothered about predicting where Leicester will finish as I don't think it is really relevant when deciding whether to keep the Leicester duo.

Glad someone agrees with me on Vardy's potential as a season keeper though! Following on from my piece last week on this topic I have recently submitted another article looking at their upcoming fixtures.

I very nearly got him as a Hazard replacement 2 weeks before his goal vs Everton. He's been a decent option for a while IMO.

As a West Ham fan he has been playing better than Payet lately and likes a shot.

He looks a quality player, he's cheap and (reading between the lines of some of the members' posts) I suspect his stats are pretty good too? Seems happy to take a shot anyway.

A midfield with Lanzini and Mahrez will look pretty weak after this week, once Mahrez struggles against better opposition

Everyone buying Lanzini is looking at him as their fifth midfielder.

Already dropped Mahrez though. Leicester aren't going to keep this up forever, they have dodgy fixtures and I already own Vardy.

Not that I'm getting Lanzini mind. Just having a look...

I expect Mahrez to keep ticking over points that are a good return relative to what I can sell him for with nothing in his range coming close to matching him.

Why are Leicester so unfashionable that people keep predicting the end as next week (only for them to return)?

Because they're overperforming right now, they're not that good a team.

Problem is predicting when the downturn will come but a nasty run of fixtures like they have ahead seems as likely a time as any other.

              Overperforming?

They are a good attacking side in a league not overflowing with good defences.

Fixtures tighten yes, will Mahrez return 200+ FPL pts? No, obviously.

But he will return better than anything I can get for his selling price. And if its the case he dries up there's no need to consider it IMO. Every Aguero Sanchez team needs enablers.

Until he dries up there's no need to consider it.

If they scores one goal its often a Vahrez.

They could lose 3-1 and score a Vahrez.

On pens, set pieces, playing no.10 - Mahrez is my favourite player in my FPL team. With good reason.

              Over performing??

Without giving too much away the stats beg to differ,. Yes welfare opposition, but still putting 2 past Arsenal and running half the league ragged despite going behind does not mean they are overperforming.

Yeah I don't fancy west ham for many attacking returns over next three.

I was looking at him as a fifth mid even before Payet got injured so I'm interested and will be back for him when things ease up.

No idea, playing for a team with bad attacking fixtures, who lost their main creative outlet, are in bad form, & are in for some serious regression (albeit it begun 2 weeks ago) with their unsustainable conversion rates.

It's not that simple, West Ham have been very lucky with their conversion rates (was nearing 55%) this season & their deviation from xG is crazy. They've been lucky this season, not bad, but lucky. Without their best chance creator, they'll need to get some serious boost in midfield.

  5. Baseline BPS Update

    10 years, 1 month ago

After the chat about Ozil and assists and BAPS I went back and updated my baseline BPS calculator. This is a stat dump for the top 40 midfielders and forwards, with a filter on a minimum of two attacking returns so far this season.

This is baseline bonus points so it strips out BPS for goals assists and cards. You'll notice that this is largely filled with midfielders but bear in mind when adding back in BPS, forwards get 24 for a goal whereas mids get 18 for a goal. All assist are worth 9.

Aha to clarify, I think he will start 80-85% of games, but you would have to be prepared for occasional rotation (particularly around Christmas I would imagine). If you have a strong bench then it may not be a big problem.

18/24 points for a goal 9 for an assist 😉

In all seriousness though BAPS at Arsenal are a nightmare especially with the most active defenders in the league:

Yeah fair enough. But you'd have to fancy Ozil to pick up attacking returns in the next few, and with that baseline he'll surely have a sniff around some BAPS

Yep and my interest in him has turned a corner tonight with these conversations, alas I don't have a Payet to get rid of. Instead I'm tossing up Giroud as a stop gap between Bony and Aguero as that word 'coverage' in the Arsenal attack.

At the other end, shot off target, offside and 'big chances missed' monsters:

      Pellè 3.3
      Rondón 3.2
      Costa 2.7
      Gomis 2.7
      Benteke 2.5
      Sinclair 2.3
      Mitrovic 2.0
      Walcott 2.0
      Jerome 0.0
      Murray -0.3
      Agüero -1.2

Joint 3rd most big chances missed:

          8 - Giroud
          7 - Walcott
          6 - Sanchez, Aguero

Just how many assists should Ozil have? 😮

Once saw an article on him which I thought hit the nail on the head. It said that Giroud is superb at doing everything a striker should, except for the 2 most important things, i.e. have pace to get in behind defenders and be clinical with his shooting.

He's a decent striker but he will never be good enough as the main front man for a title winning team....

        Niice Tony.
I was in 3rd year in college. I spent that summer working on a lovely Greek island called Paros as a barman in a beachside bar.
Ireland won the match and the owner, who was a massive crook and owned everything and everyone, on the island treated, me to the best single malt I've ever had. On board his yacht with lots of glam greek young wans.
Greece had a mare WC that year but he kept giving me the night off to watch matches with him as he felt I was a lucky Irish charm.
Meanwhile I was drinking his bar dry for free and riding all around me like a wild buck.
        Good times 😀

Tony Parkes (Blackburn Rovers) lobbing a young Peter Shilton from the six yard box in a night cup match at Ewood on Wed 29th August, 1979 v Nottingham Forest.

Forrest were a top club, winning the European Cup that year and Rovers were in the Third Division yet we managed to draw 1-1

          He was Mr Blackburn Rovers!

I still see him from time time shopping in Blackburn.

Perhaps we need him to come out retirement as caretaker manager 😉

Venky's sack Boyer after selling three top players and him not being able to buy replacements due to the transfer embargo...pathetic.

Coming from a family that adores football, I was interested in football at a young age.
In 2002, a family member had told me about a player in the Brazilian national team that had been injured for almost 2 years. I was 6 at the time.
I wanted see how that player would react, especially as that same person told me that Brazil had struggled to qualify for the world cup.
I watched Ronaldo play during that WC with passion I hadn't seen before, especially for a player that had been previously injured.
His goal against Turkey, I think, was the one that made me look at football from a different and closer perspective.
Then, I started to watch his pre-injury videos which were not live...
Today, I have in my videos library an entire section for Ronaldo 🙂

The 1985 FA cup final winner, Big Norman scoring that extra time goal to clinch the trophy. Unbelievable!

Also Robbo's in the semi-final replay was outstanding.

Utd basically beat the two best teams in Europe to win the FA cup that year, as Everton had already won the Cup Winners cup and the Division 1 title, and Liverpool were the European cup holders back in the final against Juve.

      Hence my grav! Stormin' Norman.

The 1998 World Cup, when I was 7, was when I really fell in love with football. It was initially my Dad telling me about this prodigy Ronaldo, then getting to watch him play, but Bergkamp's goal against Argentina was when I saw how beautiful the game could be (it may well be my favourite goal of all time).

Thought I'd get your thoughts on the use of stats in football .

    1) How do you feel about statistical football analysis as a whole? Does it provide value?
    2) When is it useful? When not?
    3) Do we have any idea how clubs actually use statistical analysis to value players? Set up tactics? 4) What can’t statistical analysis capture?

      1) Yes they do bring value but only when interpreted properly
      2) A bit vague, depends on what you are looking at really
      3) They probably look at opposition weaknesses and look at ways to exploit it eg slow pace of Terry/Cahill = start Walcott and use pace as much as possible.
      4) Anything tactical

      1. samaael
        • 15 Years

one of the guys from analytics fc has done number study on tactics. He worked out that teams that change tactical approach more aren't as effective as teams that largely keep the same tactic. I think his name was tom worville.

individual defensive effectiveness from a player is more of a analytics enigma

Chopping and changing tactics all the time wouldn't be effective I agree. I think a team can maintain a particular style but then put on the breaks when necessary etc. I think back to last season when Chelsea's strikers all got injured and they went all pragmatic and looked to keep clean sheets. At the switch of a button they went from a great attacking team to a great defensive team.

we have to understand the difference between raw stats and statistical analysis. raw stats are largely useless unless given context. Statistical analysis is an amazing tool. Concepts like total shots ratio, pdo, total shots on target ratio, expected goals, game states are incredible and slowly becoming mainstream.

It is believed most big clubs have stats departments but don't really use them effectively in a true analytical strength. There are some high profile examples where clubs are using them significiantly (Brentford, that club in Denmark). The Opta sports forum is coming up in Feb where clubs interested send reps and amateur analysts present proposals. Very interesting. I've been incorporating analytics into fantasy for awhile.

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

      1) We're still in early early days, think Paul DePodesta only just being hired in Baseball. Yes it does provide value when used sensibly.
      2) Initial phases of scouting and valuing players.
      3) Varies club to club, Midtjylland and Brentford are publicly showing themselves to be relatively advanced. Man City and Arsenal are definitely above and beyond though behind closed doors (e.g. StatDNA). Tactics in specific cases maybe. Think Barcelona taking short corners, Mourinho teams conceding a relatively large number of corners for number of attacks faced, Atelti not having a man on the post. Maybe this is a result of numerical analysis, maybe its just coaches having a good sense of the game.

      4) Lots and lots and lots *at the moment* postioning, defensive pressure etc

yeah paul riley has worked out expected goals and keepers' underperformance and overperformance. it is a terrific study. I dont have the website on hand.

I think with defenders, it is difficult to say a defender is better than another defender because of stats. It is the Paolo Maldini effect.

Its hard for sure as save% repeatability needs several seasons though looking at keeper positioning when making a save/conceding a goal seems like a fruitful avenue

Fair point Bald, I've been hearing more of this 'StatNA', but it seems so under wraps. The only time I've heard about it in the mainstream was in a guardian article a few years ago.

Ah yes, Barcelona's switch to building up from short corners, & goal kicks was always interesting (due to propensity to lose aerial duels perhaps?). Good to see it's had a big influence on other teams.

The underlying stats are pretty horrendous as well!

Add the fact that he only scores from open play and may well be forced to play more defensively once Hazard finds himself and it all seems most odd.

Just reading through some comments this morning, I didn't even know that I had submitted the statsbomb stuff, pure accident. It's a great site where I was e-mailing a friend about it as he was asking me about FPL-related matters. I was suppose to be submitting a review of 'what the bookies say'. Must have copy and pasted from office.org the wrong page. Apologies if I have offended anyone, let's move on hopefully

            Noob quesiton

Bought Payet at 7.6 - My current selling price is 7.9 - Current price is 8.2
Should he drop (which he will) to 8.0 lets say, will my current selling price still be 7.9 or will it also decrease gradually as the current price decreases ?
Clarification on price falls according to cp and sp would be greatly appreciated.

            Cheers

              >>If the difference between your Purchase Price (PP) and player's Current Price (CP) is "ODD" then the drop does not affect your selling value.

              >>If the difference between your Purchase Price (PP) and player's Current Price (CP) is "EVEN" then the drop effects your selling value by 0.1

If United step up their creativity even a touch I think they're a sure bet for top 3 and strong contender for top 2 or even a title challenge. I feel like Man City and Arsenal don't have solid defenses so much as they have some solid defenders that make things tick, whereas Spurs and United seem to have more of a system that different pieces plug into neatly.

Or I could be crazy 😉

that being said, I don't think Spurs have enough quality to finish in the top 5 unless Kane has form like last season

Poch is a defensive manager, Spurs fans want to see exciting football. I don't find Spurs exciting to watch. I also feel, Spurs defence can be got at. Stats will argue against my comment.

Giroud missed some guilt edge chances on Sunday.

We haven't been exciting to watch since Redknapp, but Redknapp was a terrible coach. AVB was just boring us to death without even giving defensive resoluteness. With Poch, yes it isn't exciting but we actually look like we know how to defend. Believe me, that is new territory for Spurs. And we're playing solid football and look calm on the ball. No flashy players but everyone knows their role and plays it well.

If their main players stay fit I think it's possible. They are one of the better attackng teams in the league and have a reasonable defence too.

In hindsight it was a stupid move from me to take the armband of Vardy and give it to Mahrez "on a punt". Of course he'll take them.

That doesn't seem to be what Morgan is explicitly saying, he appears to be saying that, while this run continues, if there is a game in which Leicester get a penalty and Vardy hasn't scored yet, he will get it.

After it happened last week this seems pretty obvious doesn't it? If he's about to equal the record I don't see why Mahrez would take them after he gave the last one up.

What happens after the record business is over is a different story

Because he's only got 2 assists in his last 4 games? Surely his points potential is still up there, and would be more consistent than the likes of Coutinho?

For 10+, 2 assists isn't cutting it. Just sell Coutinho when he loses form. You can get plenty of cheaper players matching his last 4.

Could that run just be a blip though, I mean every player has them. And with Aguero/Silva back, wouldn't his assist and scoring potential go up?

I get what you're saying though, I guess I'm reluctant to sell when I purchased for 10m, in case I want him back if he goes his early form

I initially thought it was an overreaction by a few to "only" 2 assists in 4 games, but then everyone seems to be saying to transfer him out... I think I'll stick to see how he goes with Aguero/Silva back.

I think he's just an easy makeweight since he doesn't have an FPL history like Sanchez does, for example. People that don't know him from Germany are quick to assume that good production is just a blip and not part of the norm.

I'm most likely sticking with as well and probably looking to sell Kolarov to fund Aguero.

                    and cheers!

Personally I'm sticking. Even against villa, he should've had a goal and there was a ball through to sterling which if it was aguero would've been an assist.

Having aguero and silva back will help him IMO too

All things considered, which pair would you rather have from now till the end of the season?

            A) Pelle and Kane

            B) Lukaku and Kane

            C) Aguero and Ighalo

Can someone explain the Alli appeal?. Isn't he a rotation threat and plays Dm alongside Dier? He has no attacking threat. I remember 2 of his assists came from Eriksen free kicks.

Lukaku is the better option but Ighalo is better value. Really depends on the team structure you want and what you'd do with the extra cash.

All things equal, you'd say Lukaku. But I think the best way to look at these is to give an example of how you might spend the extra 3m

Example; Lukaku and Bolasie or Ighalo and Ozil

            @SEPP BALDERS
Just read your post about Ozil last page.
About BPS, a big adjustment this year, affect BPS: Shot on target: player will be not awarded +BPS for shot on target anymore.

But Shot off target = -BPS

another big adjustment: you wont get -BPS for losing the ball at all (big reason Costa didnt get many bonus last year, he lost the ball everytime).

and in last seasons, -BPS for losing the ball often adjusted after the games, so BPS (PPI) changed a lots after the games. But this season, it is still changed but not much because they dont get -BPS for that.

              Hi mate

I don't think I will bench Pelle at home. Would prefer Mane I think, he will probably arrive late back from internationals

As for another keeper, I can't see it happening until Jan WC. Would prefer to use FT's elsewhere

Playing bench boost this week i think. All my players have pretty good fixtures and with my two FT's I can make it so none of my forwards and backs play each other.
Better playing it in this circumstance than waiting for a double gameweek hey?

It isn't a case of having 15 dgw players but you can replace your cheap players with dgwers and play them without benching your premium single gameweekers.

Well, it amounts to the same thing. Bench boost means 4 of your players who you'd normally bench get points. They could all be dgwers without having 15

Just play it in a dgw - doesn't matter how many are playing doubles. Not worth dismantling your team for this chip though.

I just cant think of a situation in a DGW that would have more than 7 chances for clean sheets in defence and more than 8 chances for attacking points. Would need to have a fair few playing a double with both being great fixtures.

I'm on the same boat as TM and think it isnt that useful in DGW as you are never going to have more than 11 playing twice in the one week.

Their defence was awful last year but they look a lot better. Lloris is a great keeper too.

Spurs are Spurs. They will mess up sooner or later.

As a Spurs fan I have to agree with this

                That's like saying

                Villa are Villa
They will stay in the premier league

It's looking like it. Biting the bullet and getting Rose in, looks good value especially with those fixtures.

Pochettino has created a system for them in which they can tick along without any one player standing out.

This is good enough for a mid-table finish IMO and unless he plays Eriksen centrally and Kane stays on form for much of the season, I just can't see them finishing top 4.
