Riyad Mahrez bags a goal and assist as Leicester see off Chelsea at the King Power. Jamie Vardy nets his fifteenth goal of the season but is now just one yellow card short of a single-match ban. Eden Hazard limps off for the champions as Loic Remy emerges from the bench to notch a consolation.

Mahrez and Vardy Deliver Again

Leicester City returned to the summit of the Premier League by virtue of a 2-1 home win against Chelsea. To nobody’s surprise, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were the architects of the Blues’ downfall: the pair combined for Vardy’s opener, before Mahrez curled in a sumptuous strike from an acute angle to double the hosts’ advantage. Marc Albrighton notched his second assist in as many outings and seventh of the campaign to reaffirm his budget potential. The 4.9-priced midfielder ranks joint-third for assists (seven) this term and boasts seven more points than any of his counterparts priced 5.0 or below.

There were fears that the Foxes’ momentum would be stymied once they embarked on a difficult run from Gameweek 14, yet Claudio Ranieri’s troops have dispelled that fear in emphatic fashion. As such, while their upcoming trio of fixtures (eve, liv, MCI) look tough on paper, it would take a brave man to bet against Leicester prolonging their record of scoring in every league fixture – particularly when Mahrez (18) and Vardy (17) are leading the field with regards to goal involvement.

The Foxes will be without Robert Huth for their trip to Goodison, though – the German fell off the Suspension Tightrope after earning his fifth caution of the campaign. Vardy’s booking last night took him to four yellows for the season – he must avoid incurring the referees’ wrath in the next three Gameweeks or will face a one-match ban.

Remy Strike Not Enough for Chelsea

Chelsea plummeted further into the abyss with their fifth defeat in seven outings. To illustrate the extent of their current malaise, the Blues have posted as many losses this term (nine) as in the past two combined. Aside from charting joint-second-bottom for home defeats (four), Chelsea have chalked up a solitary victory on their travels, which will be music to the ears of Manchester United and Crystal Palace ahead of upcoming visits from the champions.

Looking at Chelsea’s Fantasy output at the King Power Stadium, Loic Remy entered the fray at the 65-minute mark and went on to net a consolation goal (his first of the campaign) 12 minutes later by way of Pedro’s assist. The latter came on in the 31st minute for Eden Hazard, whose decision to remove himself from the proceeding has his manager worried:

“I don’t know what is wrong. The only thing I know is in 10 seconds he made the decision himself. It must be a serious injury because he just left the pitch and just made the decision not to go in. His first reaction was ‘I can’t’ and I was going to make the change. His second reaction was ‘I want to try,’ and when he goes on the pitch, first step he immediately says ‘I can’t do it.’ It was him in a few seconds who had three different perspectives, but clearly he couldn’t do it.”

The Londoners now gear up for back-to-back home ties (SUN, WAT), but one would be hard pressed to make a cogent case for any of their attacking assets. With four clean sheets in the last six in all competitions, though, the likes of Kurt Zouma (5.4) could still prove a viable option at the back.

So, I did a little review of team form last week, and I had a few requests to follow up on that analysis to decide how good it turned out to be. Here are the results. As you can see it’s a mixed bag, but it did throw up a few wins. I’ve put in brackets the pre-match percentages and how that translated into a prediction. I then put the result and whether the prediction could be considered a HIT or a MISS. Some could be considered both…

Norwich vs Everton = (21.5% vs 28.5%; Low chance for CS’s, fairly even) 1-1 = HIT
Palace vs Southampton = (27% vs 40.5%; Decent chance of Southampton CS) 1 – 0 = MISS (although it was only 1)
City vs Swansea = (34% vs 0%; Zero percent chance of a Swansea CS, they conceded twice) 2-1 = HIT
Sunderland vs Watford = (21.5% vs 21.5%; low percentages for CS, even) 0-1 = HIT/MISS (imo; an even game, but short on goals)
West Ham vs Stoke = (26% vs 25%; Even game; 1 in 4 chance of a CS) 0-0 = HIT
Bournemouth vs Man Utd = (19.5% vs 33.5%; Man Utd favourites & likely to score) 2-1 = MISS
Villa vs Arsenal = (13% vs 47.5%; Strong Arsenal CS chance & goals) 0-2 = HIT
Liverpool vs West Brom = (36% vs 35.5%; predicted even game, but low scoring) 2-2 = HIT/MISS (it was even in the end, but more goals than form would suggest)
    Tottenham vs Newcastle = (53.5% vs 33.5%; Tottenham win & CS; but low scoring) 1-2 = MISS/HIT
Leicester vs Chelsea = (28.5% vs 7%; Good chance of Leicester goals, little chance of a CS) = HIT

So from these numbers I Identified a few highlights, let’s see how they hold up:

    - “City have a very strong chance of a goal” = WIN; of course they scored!
    - “Very good chance of Arsenal scoring AND getting a CS” = WIN; Villa are just awful…
    - “Very strong chance of a Spurs CS” = LOSE; I think Newcastle surprised everybody there
    - “Very good chance of Leicester goals” = WIN; obviously Mahrez & Vardy with the goods once more
    - “Good potential of a Southampton CS” = LOSE; they didn’t get the CS but did only concede one
    - “Decent Chance of a City CS” = LOSE; Wasn’t too much of a surprise that Swansea got a goal
    - “Man Utd more likely to score than you might think based on recent form” = WIN; They do tend to pick up the odd goal even though it feels like they don’t & Bournemouth can’t defend
    - “Liverpool vs West Brom not as clear cut as the fixture first seems” = WIN
    - “Spurs not as likely to score as you might think” = WIN(ish); they only got the 1. Spurs don’t score many at home (weirdly) and Newcastle (one or two results aside) can be quite resilient.

    My Strategy for this GW:

    - “Reconsider captaining Kane – The fixture looks like a plum tie. However, Newcastle may be more resilient than you’d expect” = WIN; I didn’t captain Kane, and I’m glad I didn’t
    - “Get in another Arsenal midfielder. This one does seem a little more obvious, but I was on the fence about getting in Ramsey; now I think I’ll do it” = WIN; I got Ramsey in for a hit. Well worth it.
    - “Double up on Leicester? It was tempting to drop one of either Vardy or Mahrez; maybe this isn’t such a good idea” = WIN; Kept both in the Starting lineup. Good call.

So, as you can all see, like much statistical analysis of football, there is some success and some failure. On a whole though, I think there are some useful ‘nuggets’ of information put up here. I was particularly pleased at assessing Newcastle being more resilient than people expected; it felt like, on Friday, I was the only person not predicting a Spurs whitewash. Liverpool v West Brom and Norwich v Everton being even matches are a nice touch too.
Would love to know what people think…

Those are good presnts for literary-minded tykes. I recall being enraptured by the whole experience of being a protagonist in something other than tragedy, for a change 😀

Dropped from 21k to 54k last night..

        I got 51 points with Kane (C).

        Brought in Alderweireld and Moreno.
        Played both Silva and KdB.

        Bench:
        Hennessey = 8
        Wollscheid = 8
        Mahrez = 13
        Zouma = 1
TOTAL = 30 on the bench

Ramsey was my only bright spark.

Same with me and Hazard. that's the thing about having good fifth mids. I still prefer bench pts anyday than staring at the likes of westwood knowing that 2 pts is all he'll ever get.

                Exactly.
Ighalo is my perfect 5th mid, problem is he's doing so well I have to keep playing him, which relegated Mahrez to 5th mid and hurt me big time..

Gotta get braver with benching the big boys.
Kane or KdB on the bench for me this week.

Subbed out Ighalo for Kane because I was scared of ownership/captaincy in top 10k which actually wasn't high at all. Benched Vardy for Coutinho. Still have Fabianski since GW3.

Had I not made a transfer at all and played Vardy over Cout, I would've had an additional 17 points. Even if I'd benched Vardy would've still been 12 points better off.

Igahlo --> Kane (c) turned out to be a nightmare.

Not only did I lose the 5 points that Igahlo scored over Kane, but it meant that I didn't captain Lukaku, so I missed out on another 7. 12 points down on a transfer is never good.

        My woe is signing Moreno!

6pm Friday eve waiting at school to pick my 6yr old daughter up from her xmas party, whilst killing time I convinced myself to get rid of Saylor and get Moreno in to give me five fit defenders for Xmas. I was originaly saving the transfer to have a pair this week to bring Aguero back for Benteke. Told myself it was the wrong week to do this, so got Moreno in for the home WBA fixture, consequently Simpson relocated to my bench and Nyom shuffled along to 2nd sub....

So Kolarov not starting meant Simpson subbed in for 2 rather than Nyom for 12 had I of sat on my hands.. ðŸ™

Still at least the team is sorted.

A captain fail on Kane for 47 overall and yet another slip in rank to 1.3m. Horrid!

James Ollerenshaw, this week's joint leader of TorresMagic's Last Man Standing with a GW score of 88 and GW rank of 9th, is also up to 2nd in Top 10k Any Season and into the overall top thousand.
James captained Lukaku and also had double figure returns from Mahrez, Nyom, Butland and Ramsey.
All these points, and he still has Aguero on the bench!

Ciaran Treacy, leader of the FFS League, has moved up from 5th to 4th overall with 76 points this week and now leads all twelve of his mini-leagues.
And, like world number 3 Byron Gillespie, he has not yet played his Bench Boost or Triple Captain chips.

This is a bit of a longer term one so not sure if this would fit in with your theme but here goes.

Last season I was very culpable of keeping players for longer than necessary when the fixtures would go rough, so I started doing the opposite this year, attempting to jump off bandwagons ahead of the game.

Took out Mahrez and Vardy for Coutinho and Kane . Coutinho has thus remained injured and scored me 2 this week, and Harry Kane has got 2 yellows in 3 matches. Meanwhile Mahrez has 4 goals and an assist, and Vardy has 2 goals and an assist.

        Lesson learnt. Form over everything

Chucky 77 says Despite team news telling me that none of my £30.1 million of Man city assets were starting (Aguero, Kolorov, KDB), things somehow turned out for the best.

The weeks transfer had been Ayew > Ramsey, while my Captain was Lukaku, good scores from them both plus, Butland, Ighalo, Mahrez, Ozil and Cresswell all helped. The cherry on top however was Nyom coming of the bench with 12 points to replace Kolorov.

Gameweek total 88 (no hits), putting me inside the top 1000 for the first time 🙂

The idea that in this day and age of micro-tech that any referee performance can be good is a fallacy. They will always get decisions horribly wrong because they lack any real support technology wise. Coupled with the unbearable attitude of most professional footballers and the easy scapegoat of the sole, controlling individual - it is quite literally the impossible job.

Pros of Mahrez - incredible away record and strong track record of huge points hauls. He has assists and goals in his locker

Pros of Lukaku - playing at home. Less double digit scores, but is in great form, plus Leicester's defence will be Huth-less.

Mahrez - Better away stats, more explosive, Everton's shaky defence

Lukaku -.Leicester are 3rd for most crosses conceded left and right (Baines/Deulofeu) and 1st for most headed goal attempts all season. Although Leicester's defence has improved in the last 6 game weeks...

If we are going to storm the top 10k en masse this season with the template squad up there at the moment looking like this with most players at over 50% ownership and some (Mahrez) up to 98%, how are we going to breach this?

      Cech - Butland
      Kolarov - Alderweireld - Smalling - Bellerín - Dann
Mahrez - Özil - Barkley - De Bruyne - Coutinho
      Lukaku - Vardy - Ighalo

Is it going to be a case of picking up the template and waiting for those up there to make mistakes or going to have to rely on picking from the slim pickings of differentials available out there?

I'm treading water 30/40 points away and all I can think of to get ahead of this mob of solid picks is to keep going back to Aguero & Wally and hope for the ppg form of years past when they're fit and playing. Other than that do we hope Mourinho gets sacked and Chelsea finally return as viable assets? Are we waiting for big moves in the January transfer market? Or is this just a waiting game to play the DGWs like we know we can?

I always try to look for the next big move, but now I've played my Ramsey card, I just can't see it this week.

              Well I'm going with:

              KdB - Ozil - Rambo - Wijnaldum - Mahrez
              Lukaku - Ighalo

with Kane on the bench as he's horribly out of form (only 6 SoT in his last 4 games against easy enough opposition..)

I get that most wouldn't want to bench Kane, but for those without double Arsenal midfield, and not wanting to get Rambo in for City, he's a good short term option.

If you want to bench a 9.8m player, why don't you just sell him instead of getting a pricey 5th mid?

                  Because selling him would mean

                  A) cost me 4 points,
                  B) I would be bringing in a player that I would want to play and I would have to bench someone that I don't want to bench..?
                  C) IF (and big if) Kane picks up form again against Saints, I have him for next week.

Not sure why his price tag dictates whether you have to either play or sell, they can fill a bench spot nooo problem. I should have benched Silva over Mahrez last week but chickened out due to price. Cost me 10 points.

As much as I'm considering him, that is a very misleading stat. He's blanked in half of those games

Blanked vs Leicester, Stoke, Arsenal, Watford.

Villa and Everton are a lot less secure a the back, a combined 3 CS away from home.
Plus you could also say that, even though Wij isn't the most consistent, he's a lot more consistent at home, and he's explosive when he does return points.

That's true, and I do think he's a good pick, especially over the next few. But I'm just presenting the other side of the argument - it's not like he's been scoring points in every home game

Yup, not trying to deny that it's a punt, but he's done enough to warrant a gamble if people are looking to break the trend, like the initial post by Balders was saying.

                He's definitely not template anyway..

Hmmm he is going to be involved in nearly every Newcastle goal but how often are they going to be playing Norwich at home? I know the same question can be said of Aguero vs Newcastle but at least City look like creating goals anywhere.

Well, my starting XI this week was:

        DDG
        Bellerin/Alde/Moreno
        KDB/Ozil/Mahrez/Coutinho
        Kane/Lukaku/Giroud

Pretty much, on paper, as watertight as it got, and I dropped from 14k to 32k, so people at the top with a "template" team can easily fall away just through one or two errors. No one has the exact same squad as you, so there will always be ways to make ground.

Pick the players who score the points and you'll end up in and around the top. It might take longer if they're heavily owned but for now at least I'd keep it simple and rise steadily.

I don't really buy into this template terminology. Even 'template' teams are different, it's extremely rare to have two squads the same.

Obviously, keep popular picks like Lukaku, Vardy and Mahrez if they're firing. But you'll always have a few positions in the squad where you'll find natural differentiation.

Captain picks are a great weapon too, even if I've not been very successful this year! Went KDB's 1 pointer this week ðŸ™

        2) Others losing patience in highly owned players and getting rid just before they turn the corner
        3) Injuries/rotation/5th bookings destroying the template over the Xmas period

Aguero should be back in training today.

If Hazard isn't seriously injured then Mourinho may well punish him for walking off last night.

        1. Last Christmas, I gave Agüero a part
But the very next day, his hamstring gave way

          Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me Agüero, will you surprise me?
Well it's been that year, for most a demise, see?

I posted the team sheet and sent it
With a note saying "I Believe You" - I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you scored for me now, that hamstring gave pain

Last Christmas, I gave Agüero a part

Im ranked over 1m and was sitting on a small green arrow before last night. I got 14 points from last nights game and now im sitting on a red arrow. The ownership of Vardy and Mahrez is ridiculous. Can only put the drop down to dead teams leaving the arm band on the Leic mob.

      Morning folks!

I believe this season has proved that we should always be following the form players, regardless of fixture and price.

Look at Mahrez, Vardy, Igahlo, Lukaku, Ramsey, Ozil.

Don't make excuses about how someone is 'due' or they have great history (see Aguero. Kane, hazard etc). Sometimes we should just stop over thinking things and think like a casual! 🙂

Lack of ManU or Chelsea players has been key. Cuts out a huge source of points we have been used to in previous seasons. From Rooney to Drogba from Lampard to Ronaldo - both these teams have been integral to our success.

I'm expecting that to change next season though when Prem League teams get more money from their new deal.

Another big change this season is that about 20 English clubs are now amongst the 30 richest in Europe, and it isn't just the big ones who can afford to find, keep and buy good players.

As a result, there are very few easy games now (except perhaps when playing Villa), so fixtures count for much less than they used to.

Hmm... Not tooootally sure about that.

        - KdB has gone up and down in form, lots have sold him before big hauls.
        - I sold Kane just before he started scoring and got him just as he stopped.
        - Ramsey had useless form beforehand but his positional change turned that around.

I think there's a mixture of form players and fixture players.

I disagree. You haven't been following the form players properly! 😛

Why did you sell Kane? Ramsey has been showing form for the past two weeks! His new position has helped him immensely imo. Like the Ramse of old 🙂

            Haha probably not! 🙂

I sold Kane as he went 6 weeks without a goal or an assist and looked off the pace...
Like he does now after I got him back 😛

Ramsey you're probably right, the signs were there, I'm just glad I had him this week 🙂

Kane's stats were good, as was his form. A blank against a poor Newcastle team was a surprise.

If we just went on form, then everyone would have missed Aguero's 5 goal haul against Newcastle (but how many had him as captain instead?).

What constitutes form? If Ighalo blanks for 3 weeks, should everyone get rid? what is the rule?

Personally I think Watford will struggle with their upcoming fixtures, and Ighalo and Deeney's points will drop off. Form is often linked to fixtures and to confidence (also linked to results and thus fixtures).

Can't really include Kane in that final paragraph, he got 46 points over 4 GWs a few weeks ago. Agreed with the wider point though, history needs to be consigned to the dustbin somewhat.

His form has regressed immensely over the past few weeks. Compare him using the comparison tool weeks 11-13 vs 14-16

Which is exactly my point. Why continue to hold a player who has regressed so much when there are other, in-form players firing on all cylinders. Holding for a good fixture hoping that he will do something? Wrong imo.

I'm not talking about form for the entire season so far. Take the example of Kane and compare him using the comparison tool weeks 11-13 vs 14-16. You can clearly see a regression, to the point where he's not worth owning anymore. Sure, you could give him a few more games in the hope that he does find some form but why both when there are better players out there who are in-form?

I just submitted a brief article exploring this over the season as a whole so far.

One thing I would add here is that form, by definition on the FPL site, is 4 weeks long. Some recent posts on here about attackers and especially defenses have been looking at 2-3 weeks to say whether someone is in form or not. That could soon turn into whether they have scored or conceded the previous week, which I think is a bit too quick a reaction.

Even form over 4 weeks can be misleading. Some players might just have a purple patch or a few slices of luck or a run of favourable fixtures.

But if a player has shown consistent form and points over most of the season so far, then there is a good chance that this might continue.

Couldn't agree more. Took me waaaaaay too long to get on the Likes of Ozil, Vardy & Lukaku this season all based on them being historically poor picks. I owned Ozil & Vardy last season and got virtually nought from them.

It's a mentality that has left me way behind in OR and all my ML's

totally agree, had players do well in what was thought to be a diffucult game, had cs when not expected, assists or goals to, havent cap mahrez igahlo maybe cause there cheaper plays, or not at big clubs, and seem to have tricky fixtures so we all go for the agureo kanes kdb ozil etc
igahlo scored more for me last 2 games than kane, chose not to cap him, lessons learnt, armband on mahrez this week, and sticking to it ! good luck all

Couldn't agree more! Since I have been following this site and all the comments and I have slipped to the bottom of my league. By prioritising what might happen and who is due, instead of just looking at form, I have lost out big time! Thinking I have insider knowledge has backfired because it's all just speculation. The only thing that you can really trust is form and who is actually racking up points.

      Time to consider Mahrez captain?

Am chasing a 50 point gap in my minileague, sure my rival will (C) big Lukaku...

      (Achingly) Team(plate):

      Butland
      Dann Moreno Dawson
      Ozil Mahrez KdB Barkley
      Lukaku Kane Giroud

Annoyed I didn't think of Mahrez this week.. surely that Everton game will be goals galore... right!??

Cheers man - yeah I know Lukaku is the no brainer, but I'm thinking it might be a good little differential to have Mahrez's points doubled... Just not sure. Will keep checking here for others' opinions/stats! (and then probably bottle it and go back to Lukaku)

Yep, a bit like Silva in the sense that you probably have to either hold him, or just go without completely. Will occasionally pop up with a huge haul.

      probably a question for scoutcast
but why do keepers never get bandwagoned ?
      butland has gone 11,10,6,2,7,11
if any outfield player under 5 mill had this run we would be buying him at crazy speed.

          you think they are tough?
plus stoke have proven they can get CS against better teams in the same way an outfield bandwagon scores against better teams and we still buy them.
what I am trying to work out is are we conditioned into thinking keeper transfers are bad

I do, but that could work in Butland's favour in terms of save points.

I think the ship is halfway out of port with Butland at this stage, looking at when Foster is back for WBA..

You're right though, there is some preconditioned attitude towards GK transfers, there's normally not as much upside but Butland is currently disproving it.

Mine was probably the other one I mentioned - ditched KDB for his 16 pointer, then bought him straight back for 3 points over 2 weeks. That WC cost me hugely.

Because clean sheets are so unpredictable.

One slip and they are gone. At least with goals you have 90 mins to get one without any issues of mistakes made during the game. Much more fun to cheer on a striker than a gk.

Agree that Butland should get more recognition though.

              understand that
but even in comparison to a defender, look at how we all chased WBA, spton defenders before because the team were getting regular CS and their players had 20-30% rise in value
Strange that it is now stoke with added save and baps a regular occurrence, but he only has a steady stream of buyers.

Mahrez has his fingers in all the pies with pens, set-pieces, 5-pt goals etc... He has quality and technical ability.

I did think Vardy would regress though. He runs around like a madman. Doesn't the man tire?! I think he's performing above his level imo

      Hennessey -- (McCarthy)
Alderweireld --- Moreno --- Simpson --- (Ryan Bennett, Targett)
      KDB --- Ozil (V) --- Mahrez --- Barkley (Mane)
      Kane --- Lukaku (C) --- Aguero

      2FT,
      0,4ITB

Shipping Targett out this week finally. I know my defense needs lots of upgrading. For who? Baines? Who else to ship out?

What about Wollscheid? Have Hennessey as a goalkeeper, little afraid of doubling up with Ward. I like Cresswell with his attacking potential but he is very CS shy for now.

Thanks for you help GK, appreciate it. Cheers.
