Wales and Slovakia make their European Championship bows as Group B gets underway this afternoon.

Chris Coleman’s side head into their opening fixture having lost three of four friendlies prior to the tournament, scoring just three goals and conceding eight. Those matches were, however, played out without the exceptional talents of Gareth Bale who was involved in 81% of Welsh goals during the qualifying campaign.

Slovakia make their tournament debut and will have a simple objective of attempting to restrict Bale’s influence – no easy task. They can, however, point to an encouraging run of form that has seen them go eight matches unbeaten, which includes a 3-1 win over Germany in a friendly in May.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The South of France is so beautiful, after all what the French have been through, it's terrible to have wannabe hard men hooligans turning up causing more agog on their streets. Why don't they organise it properly and go and meet the Russians in a secluded green in the countryside. It's just pack mentality where mostly weak, feeble men, feel safe in numbers. Stick 'em in a one on one and see what happens.

Most likely. Doesn't make them weak though. Idiots yeah, but nobody knows if they are weak or not. It's just one of those things that people say to make them feel better about the situation.

Gerrard and Lampard aren't stylistically similar to those mentioned, which is why their partnership didn't work.

France didn't have one either last night, and they struggled even with players much better than we have. Balance is all important, and it has been sacrificed to shoehorn Rooney in.

Sure, I agree with you, but I've never seen a balanced England midfield. Largely because he don't produce many third-to-third midfielders, but we finally have one and he isn't played...

So frustrating having such dinosaurs in charge of the national team. 🙁

                -----------Alli---------------
                ----Kane----Sturridge---

As good as it gets with the players available in terms of balance for me imo..

Agree with all but Rooney. I'd prefer Henderson to balance it out.

And if we play a diamond, the centre backs need to split for the full backs to get forward, so Stones has to play.

And the defensive transition can't be what we did last game with it turning into a 433. Needs to turn into a 442 like Pool did with Suarez/Sturridge.

All academic really, we'll never succeed with the coaches the FA employs.

I totally agree with the last point. 2 defeats and one draw (0-0 against the mighty Costa Rica) and the FA extends his contract. If he gets a win somewhere this time we'll be stuck with him forever. 🙁

If he wanted to play with wingers (which is a good idea I think) why is Townsend not starting? He is more deserving of selection than either Lallana or Sterling.

I disagree with you about Vardy, though. He plays lone striker at Leicester in a counter-attacking team. If he starts for England he harms Kane who is more important by far. I actually think the formation tonight is the best one, just that I would question the player selection.

I would be 4-3-3 man all day if there was genuine quality in those attacking wide areas.. it's sadly lacked for a number of years now..

Seems to me Woy may have realised this and selected the squad with a diamond perhaps in mind hence leaving Townsend out who if not international standard in my eyes is a very good player.. then after the shambolic performance against Portugal he has bottled it.. should have persisted though and made it work that's what he gets a huge salary for after all...

Fair point regarding Vardy you are right that was a problem against Portugal but again he is paid to make sure that doesn't happen again

Townsend has done well at international level when I have seen him. And he's still only 24 and should be improving (as we saw when he was played regularly at Newcastle). I rate him quite highly.

But there it is, he's on the beach by now so it's all academic.

Diamond was ok in Quali, don't think it will work against better teams. Too many people in wrong positions.

I disagree mate.. Kane and Sturridge/Vardy central as they are for their clubs and Alli in the 10 as he is for Spurs continuing the Alli Kane partnership from club level.. Wilshere on the left of the diamond with a left foot brings a great balance and on his day is technically on another level to anything else England has imo...

I agree with this to a level. Kane +1 is great. I just think Alli plays too high for that formation and will leave spaces. As good as Rooney/Wilshere are i don't think they have the tactical nouse to own the midfield if we are up against someone who puts 3 in there.

Richard 2, cant remember the year tho.

He was the guy they dug up in a parking lot.

That DNA testing on proved that the current Queen is not descended from (royal family has been cuckoled at least twice since apparently)

Yes. Again, Muller plays in a much later group than Vardy for England. Therefore, you're able to switch the armband from Vardy, assuming he fails today, to Muller for Germany.

I would twist and then if you get 6+ tomorrow, stick. Unless you have Ronaldo to come on the last day.

Go with your gut on which one.
