Scout Picks

After listing the players in our Scout Picks Squad earlier this week, the time has come to reveal our Gameweek 3 selections.

With a large chunk of our £83 million budget tied up in two seemingly undroppable strikers, the search for value dominates our thinking.

Budget-friendly options from Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Brom are called upon as we head into the weekend with another top-heavy set of picks.

As with last season, a community champion will be going head-to-head with our weekly picks. Both teams have the same budget restrictions.

West Brom stopper Ben Foster (4.6) let us down last week after conceding to twice to Everton at home. But with Middlesbrough visiting the Hawthorns this weekend, we feel the fixture demands his inclusion once again. With nine saves already, the 13.0%-owned keeper also offers us another viable points route should he concede for the second week in a row.

All three of our defenders offer the prospect of points at both ends of the pitch. Having netted in Crystal Palace’s midweek League Cup win over Blackpool, Scott Dann (5.5) looks in the mood to replicate last season’s five-goal form. A home clash with Bournemouth also offers a strong chance of clean sheets – the Cherries have registered just 17 goal attempts so far, the third worst in the Premier League. Dann is also a strong differential this week, with just 6.7% FPL ownership.

Virgil Van Dijk (5.5), who is owned by 11.6% of FPL managers, is another with an eye for goal, scoring on three occasions last season. He faces an injury-hit Sunderland side that have yet to pick up a point under David Moyes.

Hull have been this season’s surprise package so far, with victories over Leicester and Swansea. The Tigers face a far tougher test at home to Manchester United tomorrow night, which propels Red Devils right-back Antonio Valencia (5.5) into our thinking. Although left-back Luke Shaw (5.6) emerged as the more attack-minded defender within United’s ranks at home to Southampton last Gameweek, we are sticking by Valencia, who put in a strong performance in Gameweek 1’s away trip to Bournemouth.

Despite the tight budget we have found room for one premium midfielder.

It was a close call between Eden Hazard (10.1) and Riyad Mahrez (9.5) to fill this role, but we’ve decided to opt for the Chelsea man. No side has conceded more shots both in and outside of the box in the Premier League than Burnley this season. With a goal and assist already to his name, a home clash against the Clarets offers the third most popular FPL midfielder a golden opportunity to add further attacking returns.

Ross Barkley is the fourth most transferred in player in FPL, with 190,000+ new investors this week. This has seen his price rise to 7.7 and ownership increase to 17.7% on the back of a goal, assist and a 15-point FPL total this season. Saturday’s encounter with Stoke marks the start of a strong run of fixtures for Everton, making Barkley a shrewd investment for this week and beyond.

Nathan Redmond (6.1) offers an out of position option for Southampton’s home encounter with Sunderland. Stationed up front alongside Shane Long, the summer signing from Norwich has already netted on his St Mary’s debut and sits joint second amongst midfielders for shots inside the box. So far, he’s sitting in 12.1% of FPL squads.

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend (6.5) is another budget-friendly midfield option, who is joint second among midfielders in terms of goal attempts. If new Palace striker Christian Benteke grabs significant minutes against visitors Bournemouth, the 5.7% owned Townsend could also see a boost in his assist potential, given Alan Pardew’s penchant for crosses.

Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.7) are the culprits behind our penny pinching this Gameweek. With three goals and two sets of maximum bonus each they seem indispensable on current form. It is little wonder that both are now owned by more than half of all FPL managers.

The Manchester United frontman travels to a Hull side that has conceded 41 shots already this campaign, while Aguero is at home to a dejected West Ham side that tumbled out of Europe last night and have doubts over star man Dimitri Payet.

With little cash left over we have opted for West Brom’s Salomon Rondon (6.5) as our pick of the mid-price strikers this Gameweek. The Venezuelan faces a Middlesbrough side that, along with Burnley, has the joint worst record of conceding shots in the box. Rondon, meanwhile, is currently third in the shots in the box table. Just 3.7% of FPL managers have him in their side.

Arsenal’s Rob Holding (1% ownership) is our bench option at the back. The Gunners collected a clean sheet away to Leicester last time out and, at 4.5, he offers a cheap route into a rearguard that served up 18 shut-outs in 2015/16.

We’re also backing Dusan Tadic (7.4%) for Southampton’s home match against Sunderland. Eight shots on goal and as many key passes in just two appearances suggest he’s been very unlucky not to get amongst the points for his 4% owners.

After building up his fitness and committing his future to Everton, for this season at least, Romelu Lukaku (9.0) hosts a Stoke outfit that have conceded five times in the first two matches. With veteran Shay Given still deputising in goal, the 6.1%-owned Belgian could be in line to open his account at Goodison tomorrow.

The Community Champion

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

This week’s champion is Jac The Cat who has selected a 3-4-3 formation of Foster; Valencia, Stones, Souare; Ozil, Mane, Pogba, Redmond; Kane, Vardy, Costa.

I have no problem with this site working with FPL. Good for Mark. What annoys me is paying my £15 and seeing this site be on the decline as @OfficialFPL etc is on the rise.

ICT Stats... Paid for access on FFS. Now taken away and free in FPL.

Scout Notes... Apparently not a worthy article anymore. Yet @OfficialFPL produce a dedicated video for League Cup news.

And Mark says he's quit his video games job to invest his time here?

@OfficialFPL followers get to ask Mark questions directly and get answers - THIRTY-FIVE 'Scout Says' tweets in the last two days.. Only EIGHT comments on FFS in the same period... most only due to people questioning why he's too busy to reply to gripes from his paying customers, yet he can tweet away for @OfficialFPL. THAT'S where his time has gone.

    😕

PPI calls might soon be over but... "Have you been mis-sold FFS membership this season?" could be a thing of the future.... #refund

This is how I feel. The people following OfficialFPL on Twitter and reading all the "Scout Says" comments have to be pretty motivated to begin with. These aren't "casuals" getting a leg up; it's probably the same fools on here reading the comments over there.

I paid for membership because I think this is a great site, with good information, and interesting points of view and banter, and I like to support it. I also feel like I have access to running data in a custom way that I wouldn't have otherwise.

If Mark parlayed this site into something larger for himself, good for him. Maybe it just means that other old heads that people also respect--like Jonty--will need to post more to allow members to feel as if they are getting some sort of special treatment.

I'm not disputing it's a great site - but it's in decline. Not a big deal if you're here for free, but clearly you're not a member who has paid for its content.

Hi Bobby...not sure if you seen my comments today but I'll address your points.

The Premier League wanted to use the ICT and make it available to all FPL managers not just our members. We license to them but I'm going to add them back into the custom tables only so that those members who miss them or had tables with them previously, can have them and slice by GW until the Premier League introduce this feature - which they will eventually. The ICT has been removed from our members promotional stuff (it was removed in pre-season) and we won't be promoting it as a members feature from now on. I wasn't aware how the ICT was going to be implemented by the Premier League until season kick-off so I couldn't discuss this on FFS. This was obviously difficult for me and I regret not being able to be more open on this but it was tricky.

Scout Notes - already talked about this and said that we're bringing them back for midweek but not for Sundays and Mondays as I think there is too much overlap with Treatment Table, This Much, Digest and Lineup Lessons. We now have the Stock Check which Paul and I write Saturday and Sunday as reaction to weekend matches - I feel this is far better than the Scoreboard which was basically just a scrape from the FPL page. Last season we didn't write an article Saturday and Sunday evening so I think this is an improvement.

Regarding my time - I now have more time to absorb fantasy football full time so my input into my articles and the commissioning of other writers articles should be stronger. I also have more time to comment on the site as seen earlier today. I never posted on FFS once during the day in the last two years unless I had a day off work.

I'm not in charge of the FPL social media accounts and I don't post directly on to them. The Scout Says items you refer to were done in a 30 minute surgery today - not spread over the day. I answered a lot of questions in 30 minutes. I did this over Skype with the folk managing the social media for the Premier League.

Quite happy to arrange surgeries on here if folk want them - but we've never done them and never thought them necessary for folk playing the game at your level.

Finally, again, I have to stress that I can't control or restict the Premier League's ambition to create and communicate FPL content. I'm helping them produce it becuase I really have no choice - I either took the opportunity or I watched them achieve the same results without me. At least this way FFS has a chance of benefiting from my involvement with the Premier League and the fact that I now really do live and breathe Fantasy Football.

I'll answer any more questions folk have here when I can and I'm always available via email mark@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

If you think I don't care about folks reaction in the last few weeks then you're not inside my head or in my company when I read some of the comments. I am deeply affected by it and I am going to do all I can to re-align FFS and make sure that it remains at the forefront of the FPL community, existing alongside what the Premier League produce. .

However, I also have a familry that relies on me and the new venture with the Premier League - I have to find a balance and I hope you stick with my while I look for that. Thanks.

        Thanks for getting back Mark.

I'm pleased to hear the community feedback is being taken on board with regards to ICT and Scout Notes.

Personally, the surgery style thing would be great. As you say, some of the questions on twitter are basic. But when you produced the 'Big Question' articles with replies from the Scouts, these were some of the most popular pre-season articles. A scaled-back version of this would be interesting to a lot of people I'm sure - you only have to look at the Scoutcast hot topics to see how much people value your opinions on the big issues.

Like I said, I've got no problem with the way you're progressing with FPL. We'd all do the same. My only gripe was if this site was seen to suffer as a consquence - but it's pleasing to see this is being addressed. I happily stumped up my membership fee early in pre-season after being a happy member of the site. That small contribution doesn't mean you have to answer to any of us individually but it's hard not to vent frustrations if you feel the product isn't what it was - I appreciate your response though.

Congrats with taking FFS to another level of relevance and best of luck for the season.

Thanks. Sadly I didn't have much choice to but to see how the Premier League material was going to work and then adjust FFS accordingly. I knew I was doing more and I helped plan the editorial but the scale of the social media side, plus the TV show has surprised me.

It's going to be a challenge and I am going to need to spend time to get more help to adapt the site and its content so I can't promise it will happen overnight - we've already got updates to roll out on the redesign to get done before we can move on any of that.

It's tough but I promise you I'm as committed to FFS as ever and I want to put more time in - certainly more so than the last two years in which I had to switch off 9-6 - that was very very tough.

    Heaton (Jakupovic)

Fuchs- Valencia - Targett (Amat) (Friend)

Mahrez - Hazard - Redmond - Ramirez (Capoue)

    Gray - Aguero (C) - Ibrahimovic

Good scouting and yeah that just confuses it. I think it must be Robinson though since he is the one named a sub for PL matches.

I'd play Capoue, but you could justify the hit for Rondon if you aren't wildcarding soon. He's got a nice run of fixtures.
