After listing the players in our Scout Picks Squad earlier this week, the time has come to reveal our Gameweek 3 selections.

With a large chunk of our £83 million budget tied up in two seemingly undroppable strikers, the search for value dominates our thinking.

Budget-friendly options from Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Brom are called upon as we head into the weekend with another top-heavy set of picks.

As with last season, a community champion will be going head-to-head with our weekly picks. Both teams have the same budget restrictions.

West Brom stopper Ben Foster (4.6) let us down last week after conceding to twice to Everton at home. But with Middlesbrough visiting the Hawthorns this weekend, we feel the fixture demands his inclusion once again. With nine saves already, the 13.0%-owned keeper also offers us another viable points route should he concede for the second week in a row.

All three of our defenders offer the prospect of points at both ends of the pitch. Having netted in Crystal Palace’s midweek League Cup win over Blackpool, Scott Dann (5.5) looks in the mood to replicate last season’s five-goal form. A home clash with Bournemouth also offers a strong chance of clean sheets – the Cherries have registered just 17 goal attempts so far, the third worst in the Premier League. Dann is also a strong differential this week, with just 6.7% FPL ownership.

Virgil Van Dijk (5.5), who is owned by 11.6% of FPL managers, is another with an eye for goal, scoring on three occasions last season. He faces an injury-hit Sunderland side that have yet to pick up a point under David Moyes.

Hull have been this season’s surprise package so far, with victories over Leicester and Swansea. The Tigers face a far tougher test at home to Manchester United tomorrow night, which propels Red Devils right-back Antonio Valencia (5.5) into our thinking. Although left-back Luke Shaw (5.6) emerged as the more attack-minded defender within United’s ranks at home to Southampton last Gameweek, we are sticking by Valencia, who put in a strong performance in Gameweek 1’s away trip to Bournemouth.

Despite the tight budget we have found room for one premium midfielder.

It was a close call between Eden Hazard (10.1) and Riyad Mahrez (9.5) to fill this role, but we’ve decided to opt for the Chelsea man. No side has conceded more shots both in and outside of the box in the Premier League than Burnley this season. With a goal and assist already to his name, a home clash against the Clarets offers the third most popular FPL midfielder a golden opportunity to add further attacking returns.

Ross Barkley is the fourth most transferred in player in FPL, with 190,000+ new investors this week. This has seen his price rise to 7.7 and ownership increase to 17.7% on the back of a goal, assist and a 15-point FPL total this season. Saturday’s encounter with Stoke marks the start of a strong run of fixtures for Everton, making Barkley a shrewd investment for this week and beyond.

Nathan Redmond (6.1) offers an out of position option for Southampton’s home encounter with Sunderland. Stationed up front alongside Shane Long, the summer signing from Norwich has already netted on his St Mary’s debut and sits joint second amongst midfielders for shots inside the box. So far, he’s sitting in 12.1% of FPL squads.

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend (6.5) is another budget-friendly midfield option, who is joint second among midfielders in terms of goal attempts. If new Palace striker Christian Benteke grabs significant minutes against visitors Bournemouth, the 5.7% owned Townsend could also see a boost in his assist potential, given Alan Pardew’s penchant for crosses.

Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.7) are the culprits behind our penny pinching this Gameweek. With three goals and two sets of maximum bonus each they seem indispensable on current form. It is little wonder that both are now owned by more than half of all FPL managers.

The Manchester United frontman travels to a Hull side that has conceded 41 shots already this campaign, while Aguero is at home to a dejected West Ham side that tumbled out of Europe last night and have doubts over star man Dimitri Payet.

With little cash left over we have opted for West Brom’s Salomon Rondon (6.5) as our pick of the mid-price strikers this Gameweek. The Venezuelan faces a Middlesbrough side that, along with Burnley, has the joint worst record of conceding shots in the box. Rondon, meanwhile, is currently third in the shots in the box table. Just 3.7% of FPL managers have him in their side.

Arsenal’s Rob Holding (1% ownership) is our bench option at the back. The Gunners collected a clean sheet away to Leicester last time out and, at 4.5, he offers a cheap route into a rearguard that served up 18 shut-outs in 2015/16.

We’re also backing Dusan Tadic (7.4%) for Southampton’s home match against Sunderland. Eight shots on goal and as many key passes in just two appearances suggest he’s been very unlucky not to get amongst the points for his 4% owners.

After building up his fitness and committing his future to Everton, for this season at least, Romelu Lukaku (9.0) hosts a Stoke outfit that have conceded five times in the first two matches. With veteran Shay Given still deputising in goal, the 6.1%-owned Belgian could be in line to open his account at Goodison tomorrow.

The Community Champion

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

This week’s champion is Jac The Cat who has selected a 3-4-3 formation of Foster; Valencia, Stones, Souare; Ozil, Mane, Pogba, Redmond; Kane, Vardy, Costa.

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - GAMEWEEK 3

New week, new gameweek! Gameweek 2&3 results will be presented together late next week as I'm still in Miami.

    ****** WHAT IS IT? ******

For those of you who haven't been around or aren't aware, every evening prior to the start of the gameweek FFS releases their picks of players for the gameweek, "Scout Picks", as well as 3 differentials before the first games to separate yourself from the crowd.

This is your way to have a bit of fun and challenge those scout picks with a set of your own (read instructions below). This will always open the day before the gameweek starts around 8pm, and whilst you don't have to play weekly, the more you play the better chance you have of winning!

Gameweek winners will also be awarded a spot in the Community Roundup article.

    ****** INSTRUCTIONS ******

Everyone can have their own scout picks (there is no limit on team value) but with one simple rule,

YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE PLAYER FROM EACH TEAM
(yes, two of your players at least will be on opposing teams).

You can only have ONE submission, and your FIRST submission will be what is accepted. You also must respond DIRECTLY to this post (not to a reply on this post). FFS Scout Picks are automatically enrolled. Teams must comply with FPL formation rules and be submitted in an easy to read format, e.g.

    GK
    DEF DEF DEF
    MID MID MID MID
    FOR FOR FOR

Deadline for this gameweek is Saturday 27th August, 12.30pm.

    ****** SCORING ******

Regardless of number of applicants, scoring will be done by the following:

    1st place: 3 points
Top 4% of the population will rank "second" and score 2 points.
Top 10% of the population will rank "third" and score 1 point.

There is also a bonus point which everyone is eligible for. Essentially, if you score higher than FFS' Scout Picks AND Differential Picks (i.e. 14 players), you will be awarded with a bonus point regardless of whether you were in the top 3 scoring positions or not.

Welcome to the game, and good luck.

    Foster
    Valencia Stones Amat
    Hazard Lamela Deulofeu Ramirez
    Aguero Zlatan Vardy

    Jaku Capoue Friend Kone

    A) Kone > 4.5 defender (WBA?) and bench Amat
    B) Deulofeu > Redmond
    C) Ramirez > 5.5 mid

Depends - are you in the market for a non-playing fifth midfielder? Then I would stick in the £4.5m bracket - Capoute the man of choice around here. Between the two in question, Gaston R has undoubtedly higher fantasy potential.

  9. Salah’s Sonnet
    • 15 Years
    9 years, 11 months ago

Looking for some advice please lads.

I'm definitely wildcarding during the international break, but is it worth to do it now considering my team below?
Also put together a team that it could be beneath it.

    Current team:

    Forster - Jakup
Stones - Jagielka - Valencia (Friend, Amat)
Barkley - Coutinho - Hazard - Routledge (Capoue)
    Gray - Aguero - Ibra

    Possible WC Team:

    Pickford - Jakup
Stones - Williams - Valencia (McCauley, Amat)
Barkley - Hazard - Pogba - Redmond (Capoue)
    Negredo - Aguero - Ibra

If no to a wildcard, i'll most likely have to take a -4 to shift Coutinho, when i would already using the WC after this GW.

Very unsure on what do really, thoughts? Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Juventus has been about to sell one of their 3 CB's, and it appears that you don't actually rate Sakho - foolish of you - but only Thiago Silva and Chiellini out of those are better than Sakho, and even that's style dependent. Sakho is ahead Koscielny for France, btw.

                    No I don't. I think all of Juve's CB's are better.

But you think Sakho is bang average and there's 15 PL defenders better than him. That's why there's no point! 🙂

So you jumped in, only to agree with what I was saying? Nice one Mub.

                      I named around 12 didn't I?

Alderweireld, Kompany, Koscielny, Smalling, Zouma, Stones, Vertonghen, Otamendi, Williams, Fonte, van Dijk ...

Those were some of the names iirc.

Bear in mind I'm debating with someone who claimed Mama Sakho was in the "top 3 CBs in the league", I'll just ask, which names from there would make the list of CBs that Sakho is better than? As I said, Jürgen disagrees. 🙂 He prefers Klavan as I said he would.

Lol at pretty much that whole post.

Wait, you're saying Mamadou Sakho is better than Bonucci? 😆

You're right I don't rate him, and it appears to me that Jürgen himself obviously doesn't agree with the "Sakho is world class" fan-club you seem to be a member of 😉 I thought the only members of that were Liverpool fans.

About how much Klopp rates him, just check it, Sakho has been his no. 1 defender during his whole Liverpool stay.

This is all about Sakho missing a couple of deadlines while injured.

But I didn't expect you to actually know anything, anyway, so not surprised.

Sakho was literally the 1st name on the teamsheet, but Klopp is ruthless and Sakho was late to 2 meals and missed a few therapy sessions so there's the explanation. But you know, he's bang average and there's 15 PL defenders better than him.

And now he isn't the first name on the teamsheet, because Jürgen is (potentially), according to reports, sending a world-class CB to Stoke.

Liverpool were never convincing with him in the team either. Every man and his dog knows Pool struggled with aerial balls into the box, so he wanted improvements, hence buying two new CBs and possibly sending him packing.

                    Sakho is better than Bonucci.

And I'm the one who doesn't know anything. 😆

It sounds like klopp has an issue with his attitude IMO. It will be a short term loan to a prem club.

I get that he has an issue with Sakho's attitude, he made it quite clear imo as well, but if so, there should be takers bigger than Stoke, and they can't really just force him to go to Stoke. If they push him out the door, he may choose to go somewhere else instead.

Yup, but again, if they're pushing him out, they may not be able to control where he goes. He could as well request a transfer if he's been treated like that. I know I probably would, in his place.

No other pressing issues, Gray -> Rondon look OK?

    Foster
    Valencia - Stones - Terry
    Mahrez - Firmino - Lamela - Redmond
    Aguero - Zlatan - Gray

    Heaton - Friend - Capoue - Amat

I'd rather Firmino -> Barkley and then Gray -> Tekkers next GW.

Not sure where to use my free transfers:

    De gea (Jakob)
    Stones Valencia Fuchs (Amat friend)
    Redmond hazard Townsend lamela (Ibe)
    Ibrahimovic aguero gray

    Gray to rondon?
Gray to negredo but then need to free up £200k to do it?

    Cheers in advance,

Who cares though. I only read/enjoy reading Scout Picks because I like to compare my team to the Scout Picks team. If anything I think that article could just lead to "casuals" taking hits to get in players that are in the Scouts GW selections - which would be good for "us".

    Foster
    Shaw Stones Friend
    Tadic Hazard Eriksen Redmond
    Aguero Zlatan Gray

    (Jaku, Amat, Smith, Watson)

What is everyone doing with Eriksen? My heart says Pogba but my head says get him out for Barkley.

Eriksen is the type of player that you have to hold for the long term and forget about. You won't be able to time his points, but over the course of the season he will deliver. Worth monitoring his position / minutes / production if the new bloke Janssen keeps starting, though.

Yeah it's the possible reintroduction of Janssen that was worrying me, especially with Alli coming back in to the side. Think I'll just grit my teeth and keep for another week, especially when you factor in Liverpool's garbage defence. Thank you for your reply

Evening all! Maybe its the Desperados Nocturno in me talking but I'm going to slap my lads on the table and throw Bolasie into the fray on my WC, only reason I'm pondering not doing it at all is cos he may not start! I think Koeman is a like-minded slap-the-lads-on the table kinda guy though, and will start him… Thoughts? BTW Desperados Nocturno is niiiice….

Apparently short term loan to gain fitness but I don't buy it. Klopp is ruthless, and Sakho messed about on the tour 3 times so who knows what happens. Boss defender and fella like, everyone loves him, such a shame he messed around. Let's see what happens I guess
