For a moment, we were beginning to believe it would never happen.

But Jonathan Moss had other ideas, perhaps, like me, he had been silly enough to overlook Diego Costa in his Fantasy Premier League squad.

We can’t claim that the Chelsea striker’s fifth yellow card and resultant one-match ban sent shockwaves through the Fantasy Football community – we were already in the brace position.

However, having navigated 11 domestic matches without an indiscretion, it looked as though Costa v2 was capable of making the Gameweek 19 curfew.

Now we have to consider our options.

The impact of the suspension is perhaps amplified by the fixture involved; the Boxing Day meeting with AFC Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge was potentially a platform for Costa to produce a big haul.

Then again, there was always the possibility that Antonio Conte would preserve the striker, if not in Gameweek 18, more likely for the visit of Stoke City that followed.

The Blues travel to Spurs in Gameweek 20 and, perched on the suspension tightrope; it would have been prudent for Conte to keep Costa out of the Potters clash and protected.

That’s perhaps a philosophical perspective on the current scenario – speculation to soften the blow.

Typically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a say in all this – he is now at the forefront of the Costa fall-out.

The Swede’s brace of goals at The Hawthorns has elevated his status and taken him to an impressive 54 points over his last six Gameweeks.

Even Costa, with his unerring consistency, pales in comparison, returning 42 over his last six starts.

The United striker had already built a case prior to his latest goals; he soared to the top of the “transfers in” column within an hour of Costa’s booking.

Clearly, with United facing Sunderland, Middlesbrough and West Ham before the FA Cup break and Jose Mourinho playing down fears the striker will be rested, Ibrahimovic appears poised to maintain his current output.

But for those who adopted Costa early, maximising his price increase, the decision is far from straightforward.

To move to Ibrahimovic now could force them to stick by the United striker beyond Costa’s return in Gameweek 19, should funds limit their option.

Arguably, Ibrahimovic deserves our faith, even if it does mean shedding Costa.

But benching the Chelsea man also has to be an option.

For many, that tactic will depend on the strength of their existing reserves or if they are willing to part with four points to strengthen in order to absorb Costa’s loss.

Certainly, with Ibrahimovic in the mood, the Old Trafford meeting with Sunderland looks a daunting prospect for his non-owners.

Similarly, should Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku deliver double-figures in their Gameweek 17 matches, they will doubtless attract some Costa traffic.

Kane visits Southampton while Costa sits in the stands, perhaps an unlikely venue for the Spurs striker to return heavily.

But Lukaku makes a trip to Leicester City who will be without both Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth in their already suspect defence. Surprisingly, the Everton striker is already fourth for transfers in before kicking a ball in Gameweek 17.

Costa has shed 50,000 owners at the time of writing. Clearly, an exodus of sorts is under way, presumably made up of those who can either avoid a big loss of funds or who are willing to suck it up, driven by the appeal of the Ibrahimovic form.

It will be interesting to see just how much of his 52% ownership will be lost and just how quickly Ibrahimovic can climb in the nine days until the next deadline.

But there is perhaps an added twist.

When you consider that Sergio Aguero’s return coincides with Costa’s in Gameweek 19, the option of climbing the Ibrahimovic rises as a means of earning precious extra funds offers an intriguing possibility.

Costa to Ibrahimovic and then to Aguero is just one potential route on the crossroads created by today’s events.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Pickford Jaku
    Alonso Lovren* Pieters* Holebas Amat*
    Hazard Sanchez Eriksen* Siggy Fletcher
    Ibra Costa Origi*

*The ones that might be leaving my team in the near future

Apart from some minor changes in my defence, Eriksen + Origi to Walcott + Benteke would look good in a couple of weeks time

Have no idea. Butland was supposed to be back a few weeks back, so I opted out of Grant on WC in gw12. But then Butland had some kind of a setback and the last I've heard he isn't coming back any time too soon. But haven't really followed it to be completely honest.

OK so Diego's thrown the cat amongst the pigeons by getting booked today. Any thoughts on these moves? I've already done Costa to Ibra to catch the price rise and will likely do Kane to Costa next week. Saved a transfer last week so I still have 1 FT and 0.6 itb.

    A) Valencia for McAuley
    B) Pogba/Mkhi for Payet (disgusted with his 2 blanks)
    C) Mkhi and Valencia for Payet and Holebas for -4 (have exact money for this)
    D) Save FT

Would obviously wait for news on Mkhi and only invest if Mourinho says he's fit. The above is assuming he is available.

    My team:
    Grant Pick
    McAuley Alonso Holebas Vert Amat
Payet Sanchez Walcott Siggy De Roon
    Ibra Kane Defoe

The first round of the cup will be Gameweek 18.

      Qualifying

The top 2,097,152 scorers in Gameweek 17 will enter the first round. If there are more than 2,097,152 qualifiers then there will be a random draw amongst the lowest scorers to see who qualifies.

I think Ibra and Aguero will score similar when Kun is back. Another big if for me is what role Gabriel Jesus will play when he arrives in Manchester. Ibras stats have been great and it was only a matter of time before they started going in and for £1.5m cheaper I think Ibra is the way to go.

No Negredo is just pure class Payet won't have a chance against that swans defence ...

Brace against Swansea today. The only man capable of such a feat

    Team for next GW.

    Heaton.
    Alonso, Holebas, Jones, Walker.
    Lallana, Sanchez, Siggy, Eriksen.
    Iheanacho*, Kane.
    Pickford, Costa**, Amat, Whelan.

    1ft, 0.6m in bank.

    Prob just change Nacho?
He would have a nice game though if he could start.

Think Nacho will do ok today and you might be happy to to hold and maybe roll the FT.

Just home from a night out on the beer. This is my ninth season playing fantasy premier league and I have to say, this has to be one of the most difficult seasons I have ever encountered. I hate it, but i also love it! It's so hard to predict, and there's lots of competition. It wouldn't be any fun otherwise!

It's by far the best season imo. Templates don't last long.

I'm in season 11 I think, and I agree. Very tough. Fpl nailing player prices has a lot to do with it I think. Also so many expensive players killing it.
I love it. As the weeks go by though the worry is slowly sinking in that I may be looking at my worst finish in a long time, or ever. Usually by xmas I have my shiit together

I think the competition just got a lot tougher this year - many more similar looking teams to ours - the reason is the unprecedented amount of spoon feeding.

spoon feeding definitely playing a big part. Killing the game. Not just in that it carries casuals but also researching blogs and tactics etc was always the most enjoyable part for me. Now it's redundant

That was always going to happen though. It's not like you could have blogs and sites like this exclusively forever

Yes it's inevitable. I mean researching myself, not coming to a site like this to get everything. What can ya do though eh

There's also the fact that there's 4.2 million players now. That is the most I have ever seen. 4.2 million. That is nuts!

It's very strange though. There's unpredictability fixture and results wise, but price changes caused by kneejerk reactions is purely a community thing, so it's a battle on both fronts! Right now I seem to have hit my stride a bit, mostly because Chelsea have become a rock for reliable results.

More and more players and more and more access/availability of very relevant/helpful info everywhere...

And probably the biggest reason- The inconsistency of teams/players based strongly on an evening of standards of teams..(esepcially the middle third).
I gave up doing accumulators this season.

Throw all these factors together and this is what you get!!

Definitely. Just hope that the dgw planning advantage we all have in the ffs community sees members really smashing it in the second half of the season.

Early days yet I know but which one of these awful options would you play next week?

    A) Cedric (TOT)
    B) Amat (WHU)
    C) McAuley (ars)

      Amat

With Payet in my team, I'm expecting a 1-0 home win

I've got the same choice but Pieters (liv) instead of Mcauley. Playing Cedric.

Is it worth a -8 (in total) over 2 weeks to do
    Hazard + firmino + Carroll + Kane -> Walcott + lallana + Ibra + costa
Would probably only do Kane -> Ibra this week but exact money for the moves so may need to do firmino-> lallana as well

My new front 7 would be
    Sanchez, Walcott, lallana, eriksen, wiggy
    Ibra, costa

I would do 3 but not the Hazard Costa move. As Costa is more expensive this should leave a bit ITB.
I considered Hazard to Costa but think I have missed the boat. Hazard still only 10 points behind Costa in overall score.

It doesn't really work without that unfortunately.

If I want to sell Carroll and get a real premium striker (and I really do want to sell Carroll and stop stuffing around with cheap punty strikers), it means selling hazard.

I won't put you off that I am well aware of the pain of the cheap striker this season.
