Excess baggage checked in, deckchairs reserved and sun block applied – the Scoutcast team are all ready to hit the beach.

Smack in the middle of Gameweek 37, with points flowing from all angles, not even Hal Robson Kanu’s late goal can upset the pre-vacation mood.

Stringing five men across the midfield, Luke and Az join Jonty, Andy and myself for a bumper end of season episode as we tackle another volley of questions from you, the community.

We conduct a post-mortem on the flurry of chips, weigh up the Gameweek 38 punts, put together our final day Wildcard XI and take a look back on our own personal highs and lows of a topsy-turvy season.

After 128 minutes of that lot and sunstroke already setting in, we even forget to chat captains and transfers come the end, only to make amends later.

    It does mate, i'm finding these swings are never going in my favour. Whatever about Alli and Davies, I should've known better to ditch Kane on my WC....playing differentials has hurt me. Hopefully lesson learned...but prob not 🙂

        To be honest it comes down to hits for me, they never work out they way they do for some people on here. I took a -8 in GW 28 and ended up with OR 121K.....that was my last hits of the season.
        
        I had Eriksen Alli double for a while but always had Kun over Kane. I gambled and used my WC in 34 to try and utilise all 3 DGW's as best I could which worked for 3 MU players in 34 but bit my in the arse in 37 with DDG and Rashford.

  Hard luck. For next season I'm getting high ownership quality players in the top 10k, eg Bavies and avoiding punts. Gabbi, Negredo and friends messed me up badly (15k, should have done better).

    Ya I feel the same....its like a season of what could have been. I started going differentials after one criminal mistake in GW 24.....held onto Kun and captained him when I had 2 FT. I used them to sort my DF instead of switching from Kun and Diomande to Lukaku (great fixtures) and Jesus (who exploded on the scene). Kaku netted 4 and Jesus 2 and Kun got a 1 pter off the bench, stupid decision on my behalf and turned into a 50 pt swing and I raged transferred for about 2-3 weeks taking hits and getting differentials. Calmed down then and played the long game and gradually climbed back up the ranks. Lesson learned

  If players are level on points, fewer transfers mean a higher OR. If you don't feel you're improving your team (including the bench), then not doing anything could give you an extra boost in rank.

    Going to jump in on this while I have the chance. One addition that I have personally thought would be useful is the ability to look back at the history of my previous seasons including the option to view individual GWs. Seeing the OR rank for each year is useful, though it doesn't tell me what team I started with in GW1 of 13/14 or how much points Payet (TC) got me in GW37 last season. Having more continuity from season to season would make the game much more complete in my view. This is especially important with the price changes from year to year and various position changes.
    
    I think it should be easier to join leagues and contact other players through the site. For instance, could the site add a search feature akin to the HoF search on here? I would like to look at my friend's team without him having to link his team through another platform.
    
    In terms of how the game itself plays, I think it fares quite well and has improved steadily over the years. I used to think the AoA was dreadful, but there have been several occasions where I felt I could have used it.

    Someone commented here the other day about having 'defensive players' as opposed to the classification of defenders. I think that's a really good idea. Although it's not that 'clean', I think it would bring loads of players into the game. For instance, if Kante, Dembele were brought in as defensive players and scored 4pts for a clean sheet like a defender they would become 'live' rather than just ignored. Of course they would have to be priced appropriately (6.5-7m perhaps?) but it would offer loads more choice, in terms of players and formation...

  1. I wonder if this was a freak season when it comes to price changes. I hope FPL have some good back end data to see if it was through more active players or not. If so the algorithm might need changing
  
  2. I don't want the chips binned but I want to see them mirrored like wildcards so you can use one in first half of season and one in second
  
  3. Not sure what hugely needs changing here. What did you have in mind?
  
  4. Some need to change I think. Firmino, Milner to name a couple.

      I don't like them solely because they destroy H2Hs - particularly in GW37 which can be a semi-final, depending on how your H2H league is set up. If there was a way to provide the non-chip scores for H2H matches then I would be happier with them.

    1. I like the price changes - although they've been really active I think it's also helped to make the game more interesting. Cheaper priced players are not affordable enablers for everyone. Quicker rises for the likes of Kane, Alli, Mahrez etc in previous seasons would have made the game much harder and more interesting. It also gives an extra element to think about. I know it can be frustrating, but I think it creates a positive dynamic. Having to choose between sucking up value loss or chasing money has been a good challenge - and people doing both strategies have been burned at different times...

    3. I like the scoring but make a suggestion below about defensive players instead of defenders...
    
    4. There's always a few every season, this feels pretty standard.
    
    Overall I think tweaks rather than revolutions is the way to go. It's a hugely popular game for a reason, and big changes risk ruining it IMO.

  If scoring goals in a losing game can get u points, keeping a 45 min cs should also fetch you 2 points. 2 points per half is better than a lumpsum 4 per 60 mins

  Roughs: Selling Coutinho, Gabbi's return of a big fat zero.
  Smooth: Everything else I guess but especially Sanchez (c) and going with Azpilicueta over Alonso.
  
  Having played my WC back in GW28, I had to take a few hits from GW35 onwards (28 points-worth in total). But the net return on those hits was 62 points. Ridiculous. Pity I couldn't get anything right the previous 20-odd gameweeks 😀

  Bit of a nightmare; weeks and weeks of planning went into this and saved my BB chip... ended up with a red arrow dropping from 57k to 58k. Sold Harry Kane to get Costa in. Before last night's match, I was around 40k. Horrible end to the GW after so much planning. Been overtaken in a couple of cash leagues at the worst time.

  Got 33 points from my bench, but everything else pretty much a disaster as I somehow managed a sub 100 score. Dropped to 160k OR.
  
  Having Hazard, (C)osta and Vardy instead of Sanchez, Jesus and Kane didn't work at all!
  
  Punts on Sterling (also had Sane) and Bertrand (also had Stephens and Yoshi) didn't pay off.
  
  Last few months have tried a lot of differentials in terms of players and captain picks as a last throw of the dice in my ML. If they had paid off I'd have been happy, but pretty much all failed!

  Thought I was heading for a rough one when Anichebe went off and Stephens didn't play the first game, but moving Hazard out for De Bruyne at the last minute proved to be an excellent idea and getting rid of Alonso too early all those weeks ago led to Azpilicueta scoring me 20. Add in the Sanchez, Jesus and Kane points and I ended up with 209 - feeling pretty smooth this morning 🙂

  Best GW since I joined FPL 2 seasons ago. 201 points. I was 30 points behind the leader in my mini league in GW 36 and now I led with around 100 points. My rival had a disastrous GW with TC on Hazard. While I TC Sanchez (who delivered 81 points) + Kane Haul, Jesus, De Bruyne and he didn’t have any of these players.
  
  Brilliant move on removing Hazard to De Bruyne.
  
  Wildcard in GW 36 really helps to shape the team for the double in GW 37. I have no woe this GW. It’s all joy and it one GW can turn things upside down.

  Rough: My calculated risk to go without Sanchez blew up massively in my face. I've now lost substantial leads in both my MLs and now chasing by 15 points, one of my rivals TC Sanchez and its been a bitter blow. Jesus and Kane were successful but rivals had one or both of them.
  
  Not really a smooth but I now have a chance to make some desperate final day maverick moves, the question is whether to take a -4 really go for it.

  smooth; 169 points without BB, and went from 45 k til 24 and i extended my lead in ML to 48p (he does have BB but he must do at least a -8 to get a decent side out). Alexis captain ofc, actually made the switch back to him from Jesus so happy with that-). Picking Monreal over Kos another smoothy,and first three digit GW ever, my second season playing.
  rough; alonso benched, and hazard blank(watched both matches and i honestly can´t believe how he managed NOT to get any points, pure unluck i say-), defence was ok ish, but could have been so much better, but everyone above 5 points so cant´t really complain. Alonso over Azpli certainly a bummer.

What is the secret of an amazing FPL season? I'm heading for my 10th consecutive top 100k finish and 4th top 10k finish, but I'm yet to break the top 1k - what turns a good season in to a great one?

a) it's about getting consistently lucky
b) eradicating the mistakes

  From my side I think trying not to chop and change every week helps. Saving your FT and doing 2FT's every other week can really help. Also, watching loads of games of course is very important. I'd say from your options C is the closest, with some of A and B 🙂

  I've been top 20k 7 seasons in a row now, 4 of them have been top 10k. Currently 2 points off top 1k.
  
  It's about getting on the bandwagons early imo. Also watching a bit of actual football helps, you can spot something on Match of the day that isn't shown up in a players stats

    Kids ruined my football watching time and concentration - you are right though, does make a massive difference. Hadn't appreciated how far up the pitch Bavies and Alonso were playing until you actually watch them play - bought both the first time I actually saw them play

      I watched Chelsea and noticed Alonso not only getting forward A LOT but getting into the box and having several chances. I bought him straight away and a few weeks later he scored twice.
      Been my signing of the season, along with Bavies who I got the minute Rose was injured and he's averaged 5-6 a week.

  I think at a point it becomes about luck. As you rise through the ranks, the luck Vs skill ratio swings in lucks favour. Still skill involved but can't foresee Kane scoring 4 for example.

  I disagree that it's about luck. Yes, getting very lucky can get you in the top 1k if you are also competent and diligent but to be a competent manager who has the occasional lucky season - is that enough of an aim?
  
  Eradicating mistakes is more important as long as you define what a mistake is correctly. Captaining the player that scores less isn't necessarily a mistake. Sanchez rather than Kane this week, for example, wasn't a mistake, it was a sound decision. But basing your DGW strategy around Gabbiadini when it was (should have been) clear that Puel would rotate at Southampton? That was a mistake. So really it's about being honest and self-critical in order to improve your decision-making and reduce bias.
  
  Apart from that I think you have to be brave. The top 10k are herd-like in many ways. They will say they aren't but they mostly are. Not necessarily in terms of copying others (though some do, they call it "the template") but in terms of thinking and playing in a similar way to their rivals.
  
  The trick is to try to spot when the herd is making a mistake (FFS is a very good place to observe what the trends are) and to deliberately create variance on those occasions. Reducing variance (captaining the top of the poll, considering ownership and effective ownership when making player decisions for example) has its place and the top 10k generally do a lot of that. But a key route to beating them is to pick your moments and then to be brave. If your judgement is good enough and your luck isn't terrible (and as long as you have the basic competence in the first place) then you have a good chance of a top 1k finish.
  
  FPL has changed. It used to be that competence and diligence would get you into the top 5k. VR is a good example. But with the dissemination of information and knowledge having become as wide as it now is then you need an edge. And that edge is your judgement and your bravery in exercising it. That's my viewpoint anyway.
  
  Doubtless there will now be a queue of hypocrites shooting slings and arrows that have nothing to do with this post. Be my guest, lads. 🙂
  
  PS - just to define my terms... By "top 10k" I don't mean those that are in the top 10k in GW10. I mean those that will be in it after GW38. That's why FFS is so useful for someone that sets out to beat them. Because there's no better place to read what those managers are thinking and are likely to do. Couple that with the excellent FPL Discovery site (thank you Smarty Pants!) and that's your basic espionage system in place. 😉

    I must say that Ruth_NZ summarises what it takes to get a great OR very well indeed.
    
    If you ask me the question on what it took to get into or around the top 1k so many times, I would struggle to put my finger on it. But reading the above post has highlighted to me how I have done it. So I agree with his post spot on.
    
    A defining example of being brave for me this season was GW19, when everyone said I should get Costa in for Kane after Costa had returned from suspension, and Kane had blanked in 2 easy home games. However, I had a big feeling Kane was about to explode, and the rest is history. It's these moments when going with your gut can be very rewarding.
    
    I would also add to Ruth's post to say that success is also determined by sticking to your natural style of play, whether it be Dullard or Maverick. Both styles can do well, but FPL managers tend to do better when they play to their strengths. I tend to be dullard with the odd maverick moment. Jonty has stated many times that he struggled this season when he tried to be a Maverick, when he is a natural Dullard.
