Our series of summer members’ articles continues this afternoon as we assess what’s on offer at the managerial merry-go-round that is Watford.

To begin with, we analyse the Hornets’ performances on a team level, checking out last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas of improvement. Following that, we take a look at the players to pinpoint their key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on new manager Marco Silva’s impact on his former club Hull City after an impressive stint at the KCOM Stadidum during the second half of 2016/17.

Watford parted company with Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of 2015/16, scoring 40 times on their way to finishing in thirteenth spot on 45 points.

Yet the now-departed Walter Mazzarri failed to improve upon those performances in his only season at the helm. The Vicarage Road outfit scored the same number of goals but picked up just 40 points, ending the campaign in seventeenth position.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What are your thoughts on doubling up on defences?

Found myself with a Southampton and Bournemouth double up somehow 😆

Mathematically your actually better off with defensive double ups? I think anyway, say you have 3 defenders and a goalie. If all four of them are from different teams, your relying on 4 teams gettingcleansheets. If two defenders are paired and the other defender is paired with the keeper your just relying on two clean sheets. I might be being special here but im sure halfing the risk is better no? Or is it more complicated then that?

Comes down to whether you would like to put all your chickens in fewer baskets. Increase variance in doubling up.

That's a very special way of looking at it. If you have 2 double ups in defence, you're looking for 2 clean sheets. Nice rewards yes but if you get none, you get no points.

Spreading across 4 teams, gives you 4 chances of getting a clean sheet which mathematically is better than 2. And going for the bap magnets from each defemce will also add up when these teams decide to get cleans

Mathematically the expected value is the same if we consider the probability of a clean sheet to be the same for all the defenders involved. Let's say that probability is 1/4. The expected number of clean sheets for two players on the same team is 1/4*2=1/2. The expected number of clean sheets for two players on different teams is 1/4*1+1/4*1=1/2. Doubling up has the same expected output, it just increases the chances of the extremes (0 and 2 CS) while removing the chance of a middle ground (1 CS).

So I went to chelsea today and obviously came away disappointed but more then the result is the growing concern about how unprepared we seem to be for a nightmare first 2 months, here's a few things I saw about us today

1 - the defence will be as solid as last year, especially when bakayoko comes in for Fabregas , the chances created by Arsenal were where they had men over in midfield because Fabregas didn't have the legs, with two athletes screening the defence it will be a solid team

2 - no Willian! Willian has been in my team since day 1 but he was dire today, lost count of how many times he lost the ball and was replaced after 70 minutes, that may of been due to pedro being sent off and he wanted to give musonda game time, but don't fancy the risk, he didn't take many set pieces either which was one major point possibility for him

3 - morata will come good. Say what you will about the missed penalty, and he did miss a couple of half chances but overall I thought ht was good when he came on, he won flick ons and his movement looked good, definitely would have him over lacazette

4 - the major issue is the squad size, much has been made about the need for signings but it became very apparent today, the squad needs improving if we are to compete and if we do make signings before the end of the month I cannot see Chelsea competing

Agree about Willian today, but Gunners have some mental thing going over them right now. Look at fixtures and who Willian will be going at. But overall, Chelsea isn't figuring in my team yet.

You seem to have gone backwards since last year

Morata I don't think is as good as Costa - always been a back up option, Conte doesn't seem overly impressed!

Matic is better than Bakayoko I reckon

Lost Ake who was a good squad option as well as Terry

Plus you'll find it a lot more difficult having to manage CL midweek once that kicks in.

Yes, Chelsea were surprisingly undercooked vs Arsenal, and on paper they have lots of problems, but then there's Conte. He won't sleep or eat until kicking them into some sort of serviceable shape, just like last season.

West Brom only got 6 clean sheets last season, and have lost Darren Fletcher and McAuley has aged a year.

They've signed Hegazi, who has generally played well in pre-season, but I think his lack of pace will be a problem, even in a deep defensive line.

It's a Pulis team, so many are banking on them to be defensive beasts, but there is little sign of this so far...

Lots of save points for Foster then, exactly the point of a budget keeper.

Mind you slow players like Mertesacker seem to do okay, so maybe I'm wrong about Hegazi. I did watch him get destroyed against Bristol Rovers though...

Well who knows what this season will be like for TP and the WB defence but if you look at the number clean sheets last year by club, I would take a hard pass on Foster.

I have been an Arsenal fan for 5 years and a writer for 2. From the Community Shield win yesterday, I can see how we will line up on Friday.

    Cech
    Holding(Mertesacker)-Monreal-Kolasinac
    Bellerin-Xhaka-Ramsey(ElNeny)-Ox
    Ozil-(Iwobi)Welbeck
    Lacazette

Kolasinac might start in the LWB role which would mean Mertesacker will come to the 3 man defence having no place for Chamberlain or Bellerin. Given than Ox has been in wonderful form, AW should look to adjust the formation to include all our in-form players. However, Bellerin is not in a very good touch, he is a key part of the playing XI.

Holding has impressed and we have labelled him as the future captain material. But, Mertesacker's presence will mean a presence of a leader.

El Neny has played Oop in Defence in Preseason and had played beside Xhaka yesterday. The combination brought the best out of both. So, however, least likely, El Neny could get the nod ahead of Ramsey.

Further forward, Ozil will surely come back to the team. Which means either of Iwobi, Welbeck or Sanchez will feature. Wenger should go to Welbeck for a more attacking threat to support the new arrival Lacazette.

Which leaves with the answer everyone is wanting to hear. Yes, Sanchez is less likely to start on Friday. But, surely, he will come from the bench in 68ish minutes. He should feature regularly from GW 2.

FPL prospect-wise: Kolasinac looks the best option. If he plays in the LWB role, he will get involved in the attack. We see what we can do from headers too. So, spending 6.0m on his shouldn't make you regret on a long term.

When it comes to attacking, I would just wait and watch. I would like to rule out Ramsey because he is not clinical enough. One name, for now, would be Lacazette. But, it is his first PL game, so he will not be explosive and is expected to be subbed in 68ish minutes. From GW 3/4, Sanchez should get some heavy transfer ins. Ozil is a cheaper option, but again, not explosive like similarly priced Mane.

I got to thinking about a previous post on points per match and I decided to break it down into points per 90 minutes played. Here are the results of some of the top players from last year and most likely to be picked this year. I find it a better gauge. Switching positions obviously changes it up a little.

    Forwards

    Jesus 9.26
    Kane 7.99
    Aguero 6.55
    Lukaku 6.00
    King 5.90
    Firmino 5.29
    Vardy 5.17

    Mids

    Son 7.59
    Sanchez 7.39
    Coutinho 6.91
    Pedro 6.81
    Hazard 6.76
    Ali 6.67
    Mane 6.26
    Debruyne 6.22
    Eriksen 6.21

    Defense

    Alonso 5.82
    Cahill 4.86
    Walker 4.73
    Azpi 4.47
    Bertrand 4.41
    Valencia 4.35
    Daniels 3.94

    Goalies

    Lloris 4.28
    Heaton 4.25
    Courtois 3.92
    DeGea 3.85

Anyways...just bored and decided to post my results. Use at your own risk!

All measures have their issues, including p90, although I always prefer it as a raw indication of potential. Did you do Fabs, he works out at 8.13. Obviously the players near the top of this measure will tend to be those who have played fewer minutes in some way so caution must always be used.

So, I guess you went for Kane and Jesus like me, based on your own stats?

Of course, Lukaku in better company now, but also Champions League distraction.

No faith in Lacazette or just no room at the in? The nailed on striker at Arsenal tends to rack up the points.

Based on 'Points per 90 kings' Lacazette is not included, but of course he will score a lot of points. Just waiting a little bit to see how he is performing..

I use to go fixtures over form so maybe I squueze him in when fixtures becomes better.

Understandable. Love to have a player in the friday game though xD

I've found that form for me is a better indication of potentiall points than fixtures, that being said no one really has form right now because pre-season is a lottery.

Mourinho emphasizes on defense and considering Man U fixtures you might want to involve either DDG or any other defender. Other than that I would be wary of having 3 Saints in my team because of uncertainty over their returns early in the season.

Basically this is a call for Bailly at the place of Bertrand with my 0.5. I like Mutd defense, but I have hard time finding someone totally convincing. Valencia is very expensive and last year he didn't delivered as expected, Bailly has close to no offensive value and, finally, Lindelof doesn't seem (atm) completely nailed...

Hiya, I've been tweaking for a while now so thought I'd ask for thoughts on my team:

    Foster-Elliot
    Trippier-Cedric-Ake-Lejeune-Hunemeier
    KDB-Salah-Zaha-Ritchie-Carroll
    Kane-Lukaku-Gabby

Feel like its quite a balanced team that minimises initial risk. Main areas of weakness I feel are around the uncertainty of the Southampton guys but unsure of who to replace them with that would be better. Also waiting on the Trippier scan news.

Any comments welcome, thanks in advance!!

I am not saying it has, I am just curious. It's certainly increased defender (for wing back) prices, which has therefore meant you can't get a decent attack/midfield.

        1. Albert_Luque
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

I think there's always been an element of high priced defenders (Baines and Vidic for example always used to be 7m). I think the growth in popularity of the 3-5-2 in football means that there are more expensive attacking full backs, but in terms of an impact of FPL, it just means there's another potentially fruitful strategic choice to be made (high value defence v reduction in mid/forwards)

I'm doubtful it'll make much impact this season and that Mids and Forwards will dominate the scoring, and am starting with a balanced 3-4-3. Not hard to adapt to though if I'm wrong, few transfers/hits and it'd be sorted.

Don't rotate low lvl attacking mids.

Hard enough to predict when heavy hitters score let alone players of this ilk. (Source - See Bookies Anytime Goals Odds)

Also, very hard to replace them as typically anyone worth buying costs more & in turn, we'll need 2x FT's to replace them.

1x a downgrade to fee up funds
      1x to find their replacement
