Wildcard fever has taken grip of the community over the past week. While some are currently brandishing the chip in anticipation of a boost in value and points, others are clinging to it and are all too happy to rain on their parade.

Our community discussions also took in transfer deadline day antics, the search for value in midfield and whether Harry Kane will ever find the net.

The Spurs striker’s underlying figures came under scrutiny in our Members’ tables summary, and we finish off our round-up with a look at those who have no need to Wildcard from their vantage point at the top of our community leagues.

The Community Articles

Today saw the launch of our latest community writer of the month vote, where we ask you to name your favourite scribe during August. The winner of your vote will receive a £20 Amazon voucher.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topic

Mark’s decision to activate his Wildcard sparked a flurry of discussions over the optimum time to use this valuable chip and which players to target.

The timing of his move, during the first international break, received a mixed response from the community and even shock from one of our fold.

Some who had endured a tough Gameweek – as detailed in our latest rough with the smooth Hot Topic – were among those who felt the time was right to wipe the slate clean with their team.

But Mlexer believes Wildcarding this early can be fraught with problems, with price rises stalling and too many issues still left unresvolved around team selection, rotation and form.

Your Mum’s Athletic has also noticed a slow down in the FPL transfer market and is pessimistic that the sort of dramatic valuation changes seen in 2016/17 will be replicated over the new season.

The transfer window is a key issue to take into account over the coming weeks. Dreams dropped by ahead of yesterday’s deadline to canvass the community’s views on the ideal moves they would like to see take place. As transfer deals unfolded Andre94PT gave us a detailed scouting report on Swansea’s new loan signing Renato Sanches.

But during the morning after the night before the community began to realise that the deals which failed to materialise could prove to be the most significant, with Pirlo’s Pen particularly jubilant about Marcos Alonso’s starting prospects following Chelsea’s failure to capture another left wing-back.

Another issue for Wildcarders to ponder is whether Harry Kane can live up to his 12.5 price tag, considering he has yet to score this season, despite breaking goal attempt records. Dino believes poor quality shooting is the reason behind his failure to find the net, while Poodle thinks the Spurs forward is lacking confidence.

Chris White added to the debate to highlight how the England striker is at the centre of a ‘casuals versus veterans’ battle due to his poor returns from such stunning underlying statistics.

Champions League rotation and Swansea City’s line-up are among other outstanding issues highlighted where more evidence may be required before Wildcarding, according to our discussion.

The community is far more certain about the ability of Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino to offer value following his reclassification from midfielder to forward over the summer. A19 asked for your views on how he can be best used – as part of a premium packed forward line, or as a replacement for a heavy hitter such as Kane?

Red Lightning is among those pondering whether an expensive three-man frontline can offer genuine value for money.

The fate of Kevin De Bruyne appears to be another certainty after adopting a deep midfield role and failing to produce points for his hefty fee. FC5750HC delivered the news that even the Belgian himself admits that he is now a defensive midfielder – a change of role that has already prompted 156,000+ FPL managers to part company with him this week and force his price to dip to 9.9.

There were further defensive problems and solutions provided in our discussion on the favoured backlines, while Jac the Cat asked for views on the best budget midfield options.

Value was also on the mind of Marcus, who has been highlighting some strong Fantasy options to suffer a price loss.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Members’ Tables

Ambergambler has taken a look at the most successful set-piece takers, with some additional useful statistics thrown in recgarding crossing.

Elsewhere, G-whizz has been examining the underlying statistics of strikers, with a certain Spurs forward producing some particularly eye-catching underlying numbers.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

In the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league Greenwindmill has taken top spot off Evs. Meanwhile, in the Moderators and Contributors FPL Draft league, I remain top after victory over Az, but face a stern test in Gameweek 4 when I take on our resident draft expert, second placed Andy.

QPRUTD is top of his own FFS Frequent Summers Posters league with a score of 197 after the first three Gameweeks. He is hotly pursued by Jallegre in second on 192.

Meanwhile, the Elite64 “who’s who of Fantasy Football” league has a new leader, with Don Tierney snatching top spot.

Dave Hughes has taken the lead in both Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league and PDM’s Top 1,000 Any Season contest. With a rank of 2,981, he looks on course to notch his third top 300 finish across his 12-season FPL career

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, Shaps hit the top score in Gameweek 3 with 86. There are over 3,700 teams left after 235 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 32.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

I think they've had a reasonable window, though I'd still sooner punt on Charlie Daniels or a Swansea defender.

The "Alonso will outscore a 7m mid" rubbish. Irrelevant imo. It's how he scores compared to other defenders and their price.

Alonso will experience rotation somehow. He won't be able to play every single CL/PL game

        Not a fair comparison.

A 4.5 mid is bench fodder. Which means in that case you're playing your 7m defender every week.

But a 4.5 defender is not bench fodder. Which means you're only playing one of those players each week and the other is benched.

You cannot compare a starter + bench fodder with a starter + starter. It's not fair.

      He'll score at least 170

Probably 180+ if he stays fit all season.

Hoe many do u think other defenders will score?

I guess he meant Fabregas can outscore Alonso if they both get the same amount of pitch time, which wasn't the case last season. That's irrelevant to their positions.
(I don't rate Fabregas as an FPL option either, unless I'm convinced he's absolutely nailed).

I don't have a £7m mid. But Fàbregas will score more goals than Alonso, and there are cheaper defenders playing on the wing.

                  2016/17:

                  Fàb: 1340 mins played (5 goals, 15 assists, 4 cleans): 121 points

                  Alonso: 2693 mins played (6 goals, 5 assists, 15 cleans): 177 points

If Fàb nails a starting position he outscores Alonso. Not dissing your player, mate. Just saying there are more lucrative players for around the £7m mark.

7m is too much to spend on a single defender. Not that he's gonna get double digit scores every week. I had Alonso last season and I don't have any plans to get him in any time soon. If I do go for a Chelsea defender, it's gonna be Luiz at 6m or Azpi (BAPS machine) at 6.5m.

      1. Sims
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

No point in going big at the back and not getting alonso

Makes sense if you go for a different tactic and get cheaper defenders but alonso is obviously worth .5 over azpi

.5m can make A LOT of difference to your squad. I know people who had to destroy their squads at times last season to get an essential player of their choice and they were .5m short. That being said, as I mentioned, Luiz is gonna be my first preference if I consider a Chelsea defender at all.

Think it is a useful comparison,

Alonso + 5.5m mid vs 7.0m mid + 5.5m def is perhaps more relevant than using a 4.5m benchmark.

However, the risk is that if Alonso is injured there will be few premium defenders as alternatives, whereas there will be more 6-7 midfielder options. So this becomes a team structure/flexibility issue.

It depends if you chose to play 4-3-3 but with Alonso as an effective midfielder.

      Then two 4.5/5.0 fodder midfielders.

Alonso should outscore many 7.0 mids and it's possible to get away with doing that as long as the remaining defenders are ok.

      1. Cok3y5murf
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

If you believe Alonso will outscore 7.0 mids and want to use him as a 'mid', then you may as well go with 5 at the back. Almost all defenders outscore mids at their price. Luiz will outscore most 6.0 mids. Bertrand will outscore most 5.5 mids. If you don't believe me, go take a look at their scores last season. Defenders are better value for their prices than mids, period.

So why are we discussing Alonso like he is doing something that other defenders can't?

Exactly. There's just a lack of intellect here with some people.

Alonso will outscore 7m mids, yes. But David Luiz will also outscore 6m mids. Yet no one talks about him. Alonso though is 'essential' because he has attacking potential. BS! All that matters is total points.

Alonso is more or less fairly priced. He is just as valuable for 7m as Bertrand is for 5.5 or Luiz is for 6.

Thanks, I shipped out Kane in GW3 cos he was pissing me off and is too costly. Just hope he doesn't punish me away to Everton, unlikely though I think! Will need to somehow bring him back in once he starts firing on all cylinders. Unfortunately I had to acquire 2 x 4.5m midfielders and Chalaboah seems to be one of the best in that price bracket. I think Trippier is definitely going to be a problem very soon, will need to ship out possibly next GW. I don't mind having a non-playing 5th defender, but the 4th defender should be playing. Annoying how Mbemba picked up 9 pts last GW but he was on my bench!

He's looked pretty attacking so far, good chance he gets some decent hauls. Just the game time is the concern.

Seems pretty nailed on so far and Pep likes him. However, given Pep's tinkerman nature and the upcoming CL, I would avoid City assets. I got burnt by Aguero (c) last week!

Does the signing of Sanches possibly jeopardise the playing time of Carroll? What are your thoughts on who might get the boot for him also considering Clucas is rated by Clement

Who knows. You'd think Sanches came here to play as much as possible and to be the first name on the team sheet.

      Check this:
      https://www.swanseacity.com/news/one-europes-elite-young-talents
      https://www.swanseacity.com/news/clement-delighted-renato-reunion

“Having moved from Benfica to Bayern Munich, he has not played as much as he would have liked. But this move to Swansea and the Premier League will provide him with a real positive development experience. As a player he is a dynamic, powerful central midfielder who I believe has all the attributes to suit the Premier League.’’

Also: “They felt Swansea was a place he could be coached and developed - and where he would play more regularly.’’

Yeah I'm 100% concinved he will start almost all of their games just wondering in place of who right now. Should us Carroll owners be worried or happy that there's a hard working mid next to him

Carroll takes their set pieces and should provide good ammo for Tammy/Ayew/Bony, so hopefully he keeps his spot. Seems Clement rates him.

    Getting bored so.. RMT

    Foster, Elliot
    Kolasinac, Cedric, Hegazi, Mee, Hunemeier
    KDB, Mane, Mkhi, Carroll, RLC
    Kane, Lukaku, Gabbi

    1FT

KDB to Alli is gonna be done surely. Anything for a hit?

    1. goonerdoz
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

I would avoid Arsenal assets given their current form, Kolasinac to a Man Utd defender or Alonso if you have the cash? KDB surely has to go, to Alli or Eriksen or the impending Hazard. I would also flog Gabbi for say Firms.

I am thinking the same.. but don't wanna ship a defender with a hit. And I can't do Gabbi to Firmino without a -8

KDB, Kola, Gabbi to Alli, Jones and Firmino for a -8 is viable

Luckily you only have one FT otherwise it sounds as if you would get rid of Kolasinac.

I'm going to WC and he's currently in my team, I'm in 2 minds atm as to whether to keep him or not, but as long as Wenger has fully recovered from his mental breakdown of his last team selection I expect him to start the next game against Bournemouth and I wouldn't have any qualms about him facing Chelsea after that either...

Sorry for the constant self plug, but I've written a comprehensive article on the talking points for the gameweek just gone. This part covers a potential defensive must-have, Chelsea throwing up more options, whom to pick from the Liverpool merry-go-round, a team which surprisingly has many options to consider, what to do with Kane and more. Give it a read. Part 1 link in the comments.

I'm going with him in my wild card team. He should come good very soon

This is my WC team atm, also have 2.2 ITB, how can I improve this team?

    Foster (Elliot)

Alonso - Jones - Cedric - Naughton (Simpson)

Alli - Salah - Pogba - Brady (Carroll)

    Kane - Firmino (Abraham)

I could upgrade Abraham to Morata, but to do that I would have to downgrade Alonso to Davies, Simpson to Mbemba and Brady to Atsu.

I really like this. Personally to upgrade I would get Jones out for Valencia, who is more nailed, more attacking and you can afford him.

Lack of city not worry you?

Bony will surely need to get fit. Has he even played football in six months?

Worth actually going Lacazette over Morata for a few weeks due to fixtures and then swapping if Morata looks better in few weeks?
