Our series of members’ Monitor articles on Wildcard targets continues this evening with a look at Manchester United’s number one, David De Gea.

As has been the case for almost the entirety of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, the Spaniard sits on top of the positional rankings and is the most owned goalkeeper overall.

However, despite that, De Gea has rarely featured at the summit of our Watchlist rankings until this point, with his two double Gameweeks and kind schedule now a major factor.

De Gea has accumulated 144 FPL points, six points clear of his nearest challenger (Manchester City’s Ederson), while an average of 4.8 points per match (ppm) is bettered only by Burnley’s Nick Pope (4.9ppm).

Amazingly, De Gea is now just five points short of Tom Heaton’s league-leading 149-point haul recorded last season – despite the United keeper still having eight matches left to play.

More impressively, should he maintain his current per-game averages, De Gea even looks poised to break Joe Hart’s single-season record of 166 points recorded in 2011/12 – when the City keeper combined 17 shutouts with 99 saves.

On the basis of these numbers, it would seem impossible to argue that anybody but De Gea belongs between the sticks of in our squads over the final eight Gameweeks.

Digging deeper into the keeper’s numbers, however, highlights a surprising decline in output.

Never been pissed so much before at my internet

I’m playing FUT Champions knockout tournament on FIFA 18, reaching the final after three fantastic wins of 6-3, 6-1 and 5-2

I’m winning the final 4-3 and I’m ecstatic because I’ve never qualified for FUT Champions weekend league before on XBOX, and it would be the biggest achievement of my club in FIFA that year

Rooney makes it 5-3 with a splendid long shot, and then the game buffers, and pauses for about 30 seconds. And then, it disconnects. First I assumed the opponent simply raged quit but then I got a message from the game saying I had lost connection to the EA servers...

I thought it was some sort of joke, it wasn’t. I’d lost the final due to TalkTalk internet or EA’s dodgy servers. Felt like Lampard’s ghost goal in 2010 v Germany all over again

I know it’s just a game but that was painful

    TL;DR: don’t get TalkTalk WiFi

cheers for reading if you read this far

I have all my chips and I am FH 34, WC 36 and BB 37.

TC is a single gameweek, most likely 35 or 38.

Anyone who knows me, knows I spends a ridiculous amount of time researching and analysing these things, and I think it is the best strategy on offer.

I don't like it either but Salah and Aguero have proven it can work.

I just see such obvious flaws with the standard WC 32, FH 35, TC 37 strategy.

I don't disagree. But I think the net gain of FH34 and BB37 significantly outscore a TC in a DGW.

I'm not sure about everyone else, but I fancy my chances to pick a good TC candidate in a DGW (say, Mahrez in GW34 or Kane/Sterling/Silva in GW37) than maximise my BB.

Of all the chips, BB, seems to disappoint the most.

I think he stands a higher chance if Conte doesn't see him as invaluable for the FA Cup match. Maybe he starts Pedro with Hazard in that game?

I'm not sure I'll go with more than Alonso, and I'm not even expecting him to start both in the league. Courtois or Rudiger, may be worth it.

The current thinking has Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham playing their second fixture in the midweek of 37 in London. Unless this is staggered over 3 days or the whole GW is played from Friday - Thursday I just don't see this happening. The alternate solution is to probably have one or two games on played in 36. You could potentially have mouthwatering fixtures like Chelsea (swa, HUD) and/or Tottenham (WAT, NEW) falling in GWK 36.

The official communication says matches will be scheduled around 37 could just as easily be a few days before. IMO, there is no way 6 matches will be scheduled in the midweek. In Ben Crellin's sheet if you look at the historical data never have they had more than 5 rescheduled games shoe-horned into another week. This probably means we may still get an alternate strategy for using our remaining chips.

That really depends on how many games each broadcaster has left their in quota. We've already had 5 friday night kick offs which was what they had last season. So it's not necessary that they will use it again.

The fact that they haven’t yet allocated the games to 37 gives support to this view 🙂

Ofcourse, my whole post is about just a possibility that has not been completely considered.

From the remaining fixtures probably only Swansea Southampton game wouldn't be on TV normally so I doubt the broadcaster's will let the fixtures clash and their ratings drop.

          Agreed.

The advertising revenue from premium games must be huge, so why play all the remaining blanks during the same midweek where they all clash with each other. All of the 31 blanks didn’t go to 34 so we have some precedence

... but it would be so funny to see a few go back to GW35 🙂

I suggested something along these lines a couple of weeks ago, but was batted away by the groupthink that all fixtures will drop into 34/37, just because.

Really don't see that PL has any control over TV agreements, if Sky/BT prefer to move one or two fixtures to another week, then that's exactly what they'll do.

Just as well everyone is saving their WC for next week to get the full lay of the land... 😯

Fair enough, but I'd recommend that a good lesson learned this season would be not to 'dead-end' your team for the blanks next season..WC is the most powerful chip, and forcing your own hand into a WC rather than waiting to see all the options for the run in was a popular mistake IMO... to be fair, it seemed like a genius move when it was conceived but with hindsight it has hamstrung a lot of squads in the weeks running up to the blanks (with Walcott etc), and forced a WC immediately after the blank. 🙁

Thats a fair point. But those wildcarding now can build a little flexability into their wildcards if they wish, to help deal with any surprises too, without compromising it too much

Still happy with that move. Only the Salah haul makes people who planned a bit silly but a 15 point advantage is a good ranking boost over a normal team. But your point about "dead-ending" your team holds valid more now where even those on wild cards and all chips need to be flexible for all scenarios.

If you fill up your WC team on 34 double players you will be without any option but to FH in 35 and is a strategy that only works for those without TC. Whereas if you have all 3 chips left you'd like to build your team for probably a FH 34, TC 36 and BB in 37.

Someone would still need to reply to the RMT's in a RMT topic of a forum for it to be a success. If everyone answered more RMTs than they posted then things would work well. I don't answer many A,B,C questions unless the answer is obvious.

Right, not going to overthink it so I've made one wildcard draft and I won't revisit it properly until Friday evening when we have some more team news. Not even going to ask for an RMT as I know the template already 🙂

The one main issue I'm left wrestling with until then:
    Alonso + Dunk
    vs
    Christensen + Vertonghen/Smalling

Really can't decide if Alonso's attacking threat offsets the lower chance of clean sheets that Dunk brings to the party.

You've got the gold plated template though 😉

Besides I always think 'the template' is a misleading term. Basically you could put two RMWCTs together that had a lot of differences between them but they'd both be called template because they come from the same pool of 25 players that are getting picked repeatedly. Obviously both could score wildly differently, select different captains make different transfers, etc. By the end of the season they might have drifted 60+ points apart in the last 7 weeks.

Template? I don't worry about it too much 🙂

Looks good when you put it that way 🙂 I just feel that sometimes my opinoin gets easily affected by popular voices here and sometimes I regret it. But indeed a “template” is a template for a reason

Yeah, I ignored all the RMTs when the fixtures came out until I'd had a chance to think through my own plans with a clear head. I ended up with something pretty template-y anyway because as you say, it's there for a reason - it's mostly made up of the percentage picks.

I think there's just as much of a risk of being different for the sake of it!

Well yes, I'd probably go down the Vertonghen route if I went B unless the press conferences confirm he's first choice somehow (hugely unlikely, I know). Christensen similarly would need some sort of news to make him a safe pick.

Hard to choose Chelsea and Brighton ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham/Man Utd though!

it depends on the other defenders, Is dunk going to play at all? Personally dont seem more than 7 points difference between Alonso and Christensen, but there will be a bigger difference between the other pairing

Dunk would likely have to play some weeks, yes - there would probably be some sort of rotation between him and a Burnley defender for most of the rest of the season (insofar as it's possible to plan that far ahead)

There's a case for both. I think Christ + Vert/Small certainly looks better, but Alonso + Dunk gives you much more flexibility. In some cases (certainly mine) having money tied up in Alonso, as opposed to Christ + Vert/Small allows you access to that money much easier than it would if you had money tied up in the latter. Add the fact that Kane is likely to be on our radar's come GW37 Alonso + Dunk makes greater logical sense imo.

      1. GreenWindmill
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

That's an interesting point - spreading the money out does make it harder to retrieve if necessary. I was planning on ditching Lukaku if Kane/Aguero looked good to go after GW35 but maybe there'd be other options if I had an easy downgrade elsewhere.

        Cheers, nice input.

I love how people with all their chips somehow feel superior 😀 We'll get to GW37 and their will be some boasting that they have the FHC to release in the final GW.

I'm sure the same people never spent their pocket money, and play "keeping up with the Jones'" with their neighbours.

If you aren't WCing this week and are instead doing it in 33 or a later week, don't fret. Everyone here (WC used or not) is going to provide their input and comments for you when that time comes for you to play it. We certainly aren't going to bitch and moan like some have been over the last while about those who are asking for assistance re: their WC teams.

Is bench boosting in 34 just because it is a double gameweek simply a waste of the BB chip with such a poor bench in most WC teams ? Has the DGW fever set in again ?

It all seems to be driven by Kane in 37, but surely there are alternatives for the TC?

    1. QuintonFortune25
      • 9 Years

Much easier to be certain of getting 13/14 DGW players for 34 than it is for 37. I tried to build one for 37 and cover City, United, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and it was too expensive especially with my 102.4TV. I plan on getting 13 (plus Auba and Salah) DGW players then getting a few dirt cheap players to help fund a really strong 11 for GW37. And yeah probably TC Kane

Benches are usually poor’ish no matter when you use BB, but at least in GW34 we’re more assured that the players will play, whereas in GW37, who knows. Plus time is running out, just as good using it now as it is later.

I guess, but hiw much better can you do? Most of the funds will be pumped into your main playing 11 anyway. I don’t think a bench could be the much stronger than any week playing it earlier.

Alli to Son, Hazard to Willian, Lukaku to Vardy, Mikhi to Arnie, Pogba to Lingard, Sane to Silva, Son to Mikhi, Kane to Auba, Alonso to ... etc .... easy to squeeze some cash out of a team for a better bench and even potentially get more points with a bit of luck ?

A stronger bench at the time of the greatest risk of rotation doesn’t sound like s bad idea either ?

Sounds like you have a healthy team value.

Unfortunately, my starting point is the cheaper options!

FH34 lets me afford players like Hazard that I don't
                have a chance of owning.

Not really a good TV, but downgrading one of the 7/8 premium players on WC in 36 to get a better bench in 37 is something I will explore.

A nailed Ramsey in 37 instead of Mahrez etc basically finances a great bench 🙂

One minor bonus to consider by not FH35 is that we get one additional FT to tinker with our sides prior to 37.

Handy for Kane's potential return in a week when many others will be taking hits.

I think those that WC in 32/33 and FH in 35 will be a little dissapointed with what they inherit 3 games later in 36 - 3 games without a transfer in FPL is a very long time 😉

2 games in 34 and either a league game in 35 or a FA Cup semi for quite a few players ... have you ever gone 3 games without a transfer before ?

My FH served me up with Kane and Ayew with red flags when my team was returned to me, I shudder to think what an extra game would have resulted in 🙂

I wouldn't say waste as such - but to max out on dgw players does compromise the points you get from weeks 35 and 37 - for the sake of maybe 15-20 points.

FH can be used to navigate 35, but Brighton and Burnley fodder aren't going to be much help in 37.

I'm WC32, FH34, BB37 (TC Salah against WBA), and setting my team up to make the most of some great fixtures in 32-33 and 35-37. FH34 allows me to put all my funds into the strongest DGW candidates without spending any additional money on fodder.

4 pointers from 4 nailed players on your bench would mean 16 points. Any other returns are a bonus. Can't see many getting nailed players starting 2 matches in 37.

If wc now, due to your current team line up being weak for the next few weeks then why not bb close to the wc?

Also I'm yet to see a 37 bb team that looks better than a 34 one.. In fact those that push this strategy seem to consider it strong in theory without even specifying a line up.

No right or wrong, just worth considering the options though.

        What’s your bench in 34 ?

Fixtures not set in 37 yet, league and Cups status not clear so pointless to speculate on an actual team, but more choice of games, better fixtures and you can carry extra £££ on your bench if you want to strengthen it with just one week left.

Yeah no right or wrong at all.

But as you said so many unknowns for 37 that it's too much of a risk for now. My post 31 team is a mess was wanting to wc for weeks! My bench likely to be Mariappa Chillwell and Barnes. All with decent fixtures around the double

These moves for Smalling are slightly strange. Starting the last 8 is obviously solid but Rojo, Jones and maybe Lindelof all knocking on the door now for the double. DDG and possibly Bailly the only United defence that's safe from rotation for me. Don't even think Valencia is safe from those 3 games in 7 days.

                professional fortune tellers..
yes they state the nailed facts of the past but the availability of options available now has changed plus FA cup does not mean that nail nature will prevail
                but it might...

seems to have nailed a role = not 100% nailed, for me.

I absolutely agree, and yet i've still opted for Smalling (below), i just hope i can squeeze as many games out of him as possible, or that United rack up the clean sheets making it unlikely to change in defence.

Clean sheet this weekend. No clean sheet (probably) against City. Who knows for 34. If you can fit him in without damaging the rest of your squad then maybe I see it. Slightly risky that's all

When Jones smalling and bailly are all fit nobody know who is first choice

They were all fit at the start of the season. There's your answer.

No there's the answer to "who was mourinho preferring in defence at start of season?"
Granted it does give some perspective to people who think smalling is nailed

Nah, managers change their preference throughout the season. That's just standard managing

Is that the technical term? 😉

You'll be surprised at how long managers carry their preconceptions of a player.

              Sure!

Of course, and in saying that, Smalling is far from being Mourinhos favourite

        darmian!
you remember jose squeezing out his defenders at the end of last season as the fixtures piled up
he is a failed charecter but the backs to the wall brings out the best/worst in him
        .......DDG is my united defender

I'd be surprised if Bailly would be the one not to play

So would I but it wouldn't be the first (or last) time mourinho surprised me by not playing bailly

You're probably right Champ. I'm still tempted to get Bailly in and double up with De Gea on wildcard

Yeah I'd feel pretty safe with bailly. Just know there is a risk there.

That 8th attacking spot you're convinced on?

    Ibe 8 - 1694' | 211' per return
    Gud 9 - 2304' | 256' per return
    Bar 6 - 1612' | 268' per return

A return is a goal or an assist

Anyone who says Gud is the best is wrong, he might be 😆

How many CSs are Alonso's owners expecting till end or is it only attacking returns that matters?

TOT, WHM, bur/sou, swa, LIV/HUD, new

Feels like only 2-3 CSs in those fixtures... 😮

Any reason not to get Bellerin instead of Monreal/Mustafi for next 2 fixtures?

Mustafi less prone to EL rotation.
