Our series of members’ Monitor articles on Wildcard targets continues this evening with a look at Manchester United’s number one, David De Gea.

As has been the case for almost the entirety of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, the Spaniard sits on top of the positional rankings and is the most owned goalkeeper overall.

However, despite that, De Gea has rarely featured at the summit of our Watchlist rankings until this point, with his two double Gameweeks and kind schedule now a major factor.

De Gea has accumulated 144 FPL points, six points clear of his nearest challenger (Manchester City’s Ederson), while an average of 4.8 points per match (ppm) is bettered only by Burnley’s Nick Pope (4.9ppm).

Amazingly, De Gea is now just five points short of Tom Heaton’s league-leading 149-point haul recorded last season – despite the United keeper still having eight matches left to play.

More impressively, should he maintain his current per-game averages, De Gea even looks poised to break Joe Hart’s single-season record of 166 points recorded in 2011/12 – when the City keeper combined 17 shutouts with 99 saves.

On the basis of these numbers, it would seem impossible to argue that anybody but De Gea belongs between the sticks of in our squads over the final eight Gameweeks.

Digging deeper into the keeper’s numbers, however, highlights a surprising decline in output.

Could someone explain to me how all the top defenders in the watchlist are all players I have never heard of (besides smalling)?

I've got Alonso, Daniels, Davies, Ogbonna and Van Djik, and besides Alonso i've got not one of them.

Is it mostly because of upcoming DGWKs?

How are you supposed to keep up with all the defensive team changes? One minute, Davies is hot, then the next he doesn't even get a mention...same for Van Djik??

Yeah true Rainer. I would still have 9-10dgw players in gw34 with the dgw players with a very good fixture ie Baines, Salah, Arnie, Auba et al. Then 8-10 in 35 without hits...

    Chasing the GW34 perfect side.
    WC this week?
Does anyone want United defenders vs City in GW33?
Does anyone want Spurs players this week?
Do people really want a strong bench for 32 and 33?
Do you really want to discard the 3 Pool players most people have to get in DGW's with good fixtures?
Do you really want to accommodate double DGW players to cover GW37 when the there are still 5 juicy single GW's with other alternatives?
Arsenal have great fixtures. Do people avoiding them due to a lack of DGW in 34 run a risk?
I change my mind all the time but when on a downer these questions come up.

I don't have the FH chip and not been hurt so far.
FH34 can be good but I can get there without it.
Use the FH chip limits a bench boost and 37 is a risky BB.
However, one can get luck with the right choices GW37.
City last home game in GW37 will be a bumper show IMO.

Just about to post something on this.
I'm slowly resigning myself to losing Firmino, it's decision time on Salah now or whether those are my two GW34 transfers.

Yeah it’s a toughie, as it would pretty much allow me total freedom then to really go for DGW forwards, and my ML win.
        Risky business.
I could always lose him later like you say with GW 34 transfers, but just feel it’s best i make a decision this week about it.

I feel the same - am going for an alternative strategy to accommodate Firmino and Aubameyang long term:

          FH34, BB37. TC Salah against WBA/Stoke.

Just gave it a quick look, yeah it’s certainly a viable alternative plan, i do not have FH though, so that’s the only reason really i feel like i need to look a bit more aggressively into the future with who i’m going to pick.

        Firmino x 2 games v Vardy x 4 games.
        Firmino x 2 games v Lukaku x 4 games.
That's what it looks like it's boiling down to and the answer is pretty straight forward.

It all depends on the replacement.

I think I am a bit more likely to lose Salah myself but all options are open. I'm pretty settled on a GW35 FH now so that would make losing them easier.

I do think keeping Liverpool players in GW34 is very reasonable, though. The GW34 fixture is excellent.

I am struggling with Auba-Vardy-Firmino OR Auba-Vardy-Lukaku as my WC team.

If I keep Firmino it means I am forced into a transfer in GW34 (Auba -> Lukaku) but I probably get Alonso instead of Christensen/Smalling in my side.

But why can't you keep Auba in GW34? I will be. 🙂

If I wanted an United attacker it would more likely be Sanchez than Lukaku.

                  Yes, it's a great fixture. That's why it's a tough decision.

They play the 2nd leg CL against City 4 days before. If Liverpool go out it makes it more likely that I'd keep Salah/Firmino. If they go through I'd more likely let those two go, or at least one of them.

                        • 10 Years

Yes, I think so though I'm not super keen on either.

Sánchez has actually had better numbers and a higher xG than Lukaku over the last weeks and apparently he has pens too. He has found it a bit tough settling in at Old Trafford by his own admission but does anyone believe that his class won't out soon enough?

Sánchez and Lukaku are virtually the same price and if you look at combinations then (for example) Alexis & Barnes will only cost you a tad more than Gudmundsson & Lukaku (a combination that is getting a lot of mentions) and a fair bit less than the Groß/Lukaku combo. There is also a nice tweak there whereby Barnes could easily become Ayew in GW37, giving an extra doubler (and pretty clearly the best Swansea attacker). If I were on wildcard I'd be looking at something like that probably.

My reservation is that United's attacking play isn't really firing and there is a case to think that both players may actually be over-priced. If I had to have one or other it would probably be Sánchez. As it stands it will probably be neither.

Forget all this overkill bollocks. Just look at whether or not they are good individually, if you think they are then they are also good picks together.

Personally I don't trust Lingard so wouldn't get him, but that's a separate issue to it being "overkill".

I would make sure you have the strongest gw34 dbgw team. I have 12 dbgwers for gw34 and 6 sgwers for gw35. Will do 9 for minus 4 or even 10 players for minus 8 if the players I bring in are there till gw38

The key in this game is knowing when to move forward. Son and Firmino (to a lesser extent) can have explosive scores but also a number of 2s in a row. Firmino is in excellent form and is excellent value but I am unsure he will outscore Lukaku who has 8 games left while Firmino has 7 left, including 1 he may be rested for if Klopp's history is any indication. 8 vs 6 games I'd go with Rom.

-21 is for Brighton. It's 21 for Leicester. But that's still among the lowest.

Well I don't really follow those numbers every week, but just something to consider. And 21 is one of the lowest I've seen. Why risk a hit?

Well I remember either him or G-Whizz saying that they wouldn't bother with anything less than 200. So 21 means it's going to be a low scoring tight game.

I suppose he will surely get a few games during the run in for the first team seen that he is now fit enough for the u23s especially when Liverpool have a top four spot secured for sure.

Coming to the conclusion that I'll be losing 1million in value transferring out Firmino & Otamendi.

The final decision is on whether Salah stays or goes.
The way I'm planning to play the season out then Salah is a goner apart from FH GW 35 then bring him back in GW36.
Losing that value is a stinker but I guess it's all relative.

Actually as it turns out if I transfer out Ota & Firmino I'll have the option of shifting him for GW34 but bring him back after FH in 35 so actually it's not that big a deal and I'll have a better idea if it's crazy then.
Playing the fixtures, but we'll see. It would most likely be for MunU player or Hazard who'll both have 2 games to Salahs juicy Bournemouth at home.

One of my defender spots is tricky.

Money for Smalling or Christensen but iffy about both.

        Could be Mustafi.

Swansea an okay 34 fixture and good enough double in 37. Probably better off just getting the cheaper Fernandez though

It's actually a good plan, saves a transfer down the line too, great double 37 and nice 38

1 less match for the 34 BB is only small issue. Not sure Im that bothered though

Any defenders from top teams with a double that are 5.8 or less?

Currently got Verthonghen and Dummett but could maybe split those two better

      Christensen and Smalling.
