After 38 often gruelling Gameweeks, the Fantasy Football community waves goodbye to the 2017/18 season and starts preparing for the next campaign.

The Hot Topic posters look back on the key events over the last few months and start to consider which players will help earn us a flying start when the new season kicks off in August.

The success and failures of the Premier League prediction business come under scrutiny in our community article section, which as usual features the latest developments in Norwegian top-flight Fantasy game, Elitserien.

Our community tournament round-up is extended this week as we congratulate the winners across a range of leagues, cups and competitions.

The Community Articles.

Armed with a season’s worth of crowd canvassing, Hutch_James delivered his final look at how groupthink fared in terms of predicting results this season.

The underlying statistics kings of the campaign are the focus of FPL Virgin’s latest article.

But while domestic action may be over Mr Klin of Norway served up a reminder that Norwegian game Fantasy Eliteserien is available to play throughout the summer with his latest weekly preview.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The 2017/18 ended in dramatic fashion with 31 goals scored on the final day. Our “rough with the smooth” collection of your Gameweek 38 scores reveals how this action-packed 90 minutes impacted on the community’s overall ranks and quest for mini-league glory.

Stat also dropped by to reveal how this year’s rank milestones compare to last season, while Red Lightning looked at the end of season chip strategy of FPL’s top players.

Discussions also took place on how the best FPL managers across a number of seasons are defined.

Our own Hall of Fame update revealed the top managers from our leagues as well as some of their key strategies for success this season. While Zan Keroski let us know about an alternative way of measuring career achievements, with a stronger focus on more recent ranks.

FPL Freddo added further thoughts to this debate, while former Hall of Fame top ten manager Triggerlips launched his own ‘haul of fame’ which rewards multiple top 1,000 finishes, even if they were some time ago.

Triggerlips was in fine form this week with two further Hot Topics, looking at the effect of the Triple Captain chip and whether anyone had a worst best Gameweek than him.

The 2017/18 campaign came under further scrutiny when we quizzed you on your most impactful decisions made over the season. Swinner added to the discussion by asking what defines a successful season, a good rank or beating a rival.

Fusen also waded in to let us know that he has bolstered his FPL Statistico season review tool to include a section that divides up the season in stages.

Elsewhere, this campaign’s most successful formations were the focus of The Mighty Hippo’s latest Hot Topic, while Legomane pondered the importance of a great start.

Ignoring Mohamed Salah for the captaincy was perhaps one of the more obvious oversights at times this season. Given the Liverpool winger has just accrued the largest points haul in Fantasy Premier League history a price hike seems inevitable. But, we asked, how much is too much to pay for the Egyptian record breaker.

This week’s chat also featured plenty of forward thinking as managers started scouting for the 2018/19 Berbinho’s Forehead, Giggs Boson and Asquishypotato all canvassed opinion on a number of clubs as they asked how Manchester United, Spurs and Liverpool can build and improve next season.

Champions Manchester City are one team who can perhaps relax their summer activity in the market, with Fantasy Gold predicting that they could dominate the Premier League for years to come.

Meanwhile, Grooveymatt65 has already started bargain hunting with his discussion on next season’s potential cut-price gems.

Among them could be teenage sensation Ryan Sessegnon, who may well be playing top flight football in 2018/19 should his Fulham side prevail in the play-off finals against Aston Villa. Fantasy Gold urges Fantasy managers to keep a close eye on the England Under 21s international.

England’s senior squad for the World Cup, which was announced this week, came under scrutiny in Giggs Boson’s Hot Topic, in which he asked the community to name the best starting XI from this group.

The World Cup chat continued with FFFrog’s number crunching post.

Back to domestic matters, the potential reclassification of some midfielders and forwards next season gets discussed in a post from Aarono23, while discussion on potential rule changes is the focus of Scoutcaster Az’s Hot Topic, where he asks whether FPL’s assist and bonus awards, as well as chips, need an overhaul.

Az earns a further mention after scooping an award for his appearances on our weekly podcast, which picked up a raft of other accolades this week.

With no Premier League action until August Niemi recommends Fantasy managers turn to Norway’s Eliteserien to fill the gap. He has set up a new league, which started scoring this week and also put forward a list of key players to consider.

Niemi’s hard work has been duly noted by community manager Geoff, who let us know that our Norwegian football expert has joined his expanding crew of moderators, with community regular Zoumasbloomers also joining the team.

A raft of new community features are planned over the summer, many of which will be based on feedback collected by Geoff this week. We also asked what improvements Members would like to the tools available to them.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Community Tournaments

Congratulations to Gregor, who has won 2017/18’s Scout Picks community champion competition. His 33 point margin of victory, achieved in Gameweek 5, proved unbeatable. He wins a £100 Amazon voucher and a place in next season’s moderators and contributors league.

Gameweek 38’s community champion Choppers 13 lost 89-74 to the Scouts.

A score of 74 was enough to secure Az first in the FFScout moderators and contributors league, six points ahead of second-placed Jack Wain.

I snatched the summit from QPR Utd in his own FFS Frequent Summer Posters league by transfers made (42 to 45), while Dan Jeffries wins the FFS Old Farts Club league for the site’s elder statesmen and women.

Epic Fail has won Gnu’s Wigan to Me head to head contest. However, he missed out on top spot to me in the Dugout draft leg of Teddy’s Iron man competition, in which Paul Brett scooped first in the FPL Draft element.

Sticking with FPL Draft, our fixture ticker guru Pure Olivia claims bragging rights at the top of the FFScout moderators and contributors league.

In Red Lightning’s competitions, Anders Lium has won his Top 10K Any Season league, Shirin Nizar grabs the January to May league crown, Balders takes top spot in his Doubles, Blanks and Chips mini league and Stuart Blakely scoops his Opening Day contest.

Grant Barclay won Az’s £20 cash league, beating the contest’s host by one point. Meanwhile, TimothyJ, who comfortably won Az’s £5 cash league, finishing with an overall rank of 238.

If you are running a community tournament for the World Cup and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

I've had an amazing idea! 😀

This will really help us through these dark days now the FPL season is over.

    GAMEWEEK 1 SQUAD SELECTOR TOOL

It would have predicted prices for all the players (FFS is good enough to get them right within a plus or minus £0.5m margin of error).

This preseason tool would satisfy that huge urge to tinker and work on your gameweek 1 team without the agony of having to wait until mid July for the game to release.

I definitely think this is something people would pay a membership fee for.

Sterling looks good value. Think he could kick-on and become a 20+ goal a season player under Guardiola. KDB and Eriksen look fairly priced too.

Issue is World Cup and some of these guys might not start the season.

At the end of the day it's still guesswork on prices .... FIX had De Gea at 5m last season. Tbh most of their stuff is pretty dross but the rotation tool is very good and the pre-season pack helps to get the juices going. Tracking rival scores and transfers is sneakily helpful too.

I came from TFF to FPL. And it occurred to me that TFF had designed a game to fix all the common grumbles of FPL, i.e. Make transfers after line ups have been released, equal points for a centre forward goal, select more than 3 players from the same team, partial clean sheet bonus, 3 points for key contributions so there is no controversy over assists etc etc

I much prefer FPL by the way, but TFF is very good and should be a great option for the World Cup game.

It's decent if you intend to sit on your pc all summer choosing transfers. Stupid and unneccsary amount of transfers . Plus it means block defences. Kind of spoils the game as it makes it all about the defence . If you don't partake in block defence you lose out to the ones who do it and get it right ( leader board full of block defences)

That was awful at the start. They had to change everyone's points total. They messed up with using minus points for losing ball and it ended up with players on minus points at the end. After they changed it the game was brilliant

There was an article on the BBC the other day about someone entirely using software through the whole season to make FPL picks and captains. (I think they called it an AI fantasy football team or something silly.)

Anyway, the team finished 20k OR I think, a pretty respectable score. Possibly high enough to win some people's work or cash leagues. What if this tool gets used by a site more publicly next season? Is their a risk of a genuine 'template team'? Is FPL facing a potential existential threat?

This will definitely become more popular. Directly transferable analytical techniques are commonly used in the financial markets (e.g. stock market investment) that are incredibly effective and efficient. The name of the game is to increase probability of higher returns (points) while minimising risk (of losing points) using data driven analytics. I learned some of these techniques at uni and think that, if done right, it would be the most powerful way to play.

What you need to make these techniques sing is reliable data and experience with manipulating data, in this case player/team stats, the bookie’s odds and whatever else can predict points. There are simplest stories analyse data but what I’m referring to generally requires fairly serious training in academia or industry. And if money leagues get more serious, then people will be more incentivised to apply analytics in FPL.

I know of a technique used to predict price predictions and lead you to such high team value mid season that it stops being a limiting factor - apparently very effective. That’s obviously not optimal but people are making use of the data and tools they have available.

Just watched the BBC video, looks like they are doing the kind of thing I describe above. I would guess this started out as a relatively ad-hoc experiment and now they've refined the algorithm and achieved the top 1% of managers this season. Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Been looking at Yusuf's winning team. Didn’t he do well!

Yusuf’s strategy was so simple, the eyeball test, form and a focus on point scorers - in combination. Importantly he made his own decisions. He made his own luck and fate went for him. Anyone who watches football can do that. It’s what most of us do anyway.

So he won through player selection and timing. Makes it sound easy. Except you have to be better than 6 million others. Boom. Boom.

Concentrated on midfield over strikers. Although to be fair if Kane had put his chances away it would be different as he went without him till gw8. That was a huge risk that paid off. Brave so have to give him credit

If Salah costs 13-14m that's 13-14% of your budget.

    But...

If he scores 303 points again that's 12.6% of your total score assuming you score 2400pts.

Does that make it worth it for you?

FPL is a game of value prediction. As you say 13m = 13% of budget. With a score of 2500 to win FPL and removing 325 for captaincy you need to score 2175 pts raw. 13% of 2175 = 285pts. 285pts / 38 = 7.5pts per game. There may be stretches of games where Salah / Kane / KDB etc will score at that rate in which case you should bring him in.

Sure he might even go well above 7.5 ppg at times, but at 13 million (just like Kane tbf) he significantly decreases the capability of other parts of your squad to do their duty - you're relying on budget options to be consistent, which may not happen.

Projecting FPL performance from his xG/A numbers (ignoring his overperformance this season), I would pay up to 16m for him as a midfielder.

Regarding your budget numbers, Its possible to look it from a different angle. If you acknowledge that we are forced to buy 15 players at a minimum of 4.5m per player, then we really only have 32.5m to choose how to spend. In that case, Salah actually represents 29% of our disposable bank, if he were to be 14 million.

I don't mind the format McDonalds run but would prefer if they changed to X amount of transfers you can use freely during the group stages, with the deadline being 1 hour before the first game of the day.

30 transfers during group stages, a wildcard after every stage is complete and a handful transfers for every KO stage.

Probably won't happen though as a lot of casuals would use up all their transfers within the first couple of days.

The dream team game maybe better for you?

Like I mention though this format means your playing against block defences which will annoy the hell out of you.

Nah I only play official games these days. Third party stuff is annoying so I'll just go along with whatever the official game puts on the table.

I get the block defence issue but that occurs in other formats too, including McDonalds, especially in the latter stages. I think I took a massive leap up to within OR30 by backing an all Portugal defence in the last final.

It's harder to get away from it if it goes wrong in the fifa game as you only get one transfer. With the sun and telegraph people change it every game of the group games as they have loads of transfers

Without getting too political, I'd say that the capitalist imperialist blend that has characterised foreign policy globally (particularly in america however) since the 1800s is somewhere in the top 3

Speaking of block defences, did anyone else start with triple Soton defence? Forster, Bertrand, Stephens here. Looks awful in hindsight but I think they achieved most of their clean sheets in the first 5 GWs so it wasn't as bad as it sounds.

Hard to say without prices or up-to-date knowledge on who'll start. But on groups, early form etc. players I like the look of:

      Lewandowski, Isco, Muller/Werner, Cavani/Suarez

      1. el polako
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

I wouldnt bank on Lewandowski - too occupied trying to leave Bayern, really worried that it will affect his form.

Milik is your man - most of focus will be on Lewy which will leave space for Napoli's forward and his magical left foot.

        1. FFFrog
          • 10 Years

Do you not think that being his country's talisman will come first? Averaging 1.6 goals a game in qualifying is huge and he's playing 3 very questionable defences in a group Poland know they have every chance of getting out of.

            • 9 Years

In last Euro Lewandowski had to wait until quater finals (vs Portugal) for his first goal.
Yes he was very prolific during qualifiers but the last few weeks at Bayern he rather average.
My gut feeling tells me that Lewandowski will work hard and absorb most of the attention which will let Milik shine.

Belgium, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Uruguay and Germany attack for me - as many of KDB, Hazard, Lukaku, Paulinho, Coutinho, Jesus, Neymar, David Silva, Isco, Ronaldo, Andre Silva, Cavani, Werner, Sane and Muller. Defensively hard to predict but France, Russia, Spain and Belgium (perhaps also England) look good bets

Honestly I think Lewandowski will be the first name in my team. 40+ goals in past 3 seasons & 34 goals in his last 33 games for Poland and he has Japan, Colombia, Senegal in his group.

        Likewise Suarez/Cavani have easy group.

Getting the right French attacker is important too. One of Griezman or Mbappe probably.

There will be great value in Spain somewhere too. Isco, Costa or Aspas possibly

And whoever starts in attack for Germany.

Also, will be controversial but I don't rate Brazil or Argentina at all. If I was being bold I'd say one of them won't get out the group. But neither will go far.

Their entire world cup hopes will lay on him and there's every chance he'll live up to them, at least in the group stage, and get a couple of goals but he will likely be their only really performer or fantasy asset and I wouldn't back him past the groups because their defence will give out on him
