A starting price of £6.5m for a midfielder who plays for a club newly promoted to the Premier League is an eyebrow-raiser.

But then, Diogo Jota – who has UEFA Champions League experience and 14 Portugal under-21 caps to his name – is no ordinary, Championship-level midfield workhorse and Wolverhampton Wanderers are no naive top-flight rookies.

While survival will be the primary target for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side next season, the West Midlands club has significant financial resources, access to a well-connected super-agent, an intelligent head coach and a gifted young squad that should see them hold their own in the Premier League.

Jota was one of six astute loan signings made by Santo last season (including centre-half Willy Boly and striker Leo Bonatini), all of whom played a part in Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder’s contribution was as important as any Wolves player’s in 2017/18, with Jota finishing as the Championship winners’ leading goal-scorer on 17 league goals.

Jota has made his move to Molineux permanent over the summer, the deal having been agreed with parent club Atletico Madrid in January.

While fellow Portuguese star Ruben Neves (£5.0m) – sitting in over 15% of Fantasy Premier League squads – is the most popular Wolves asset in FPL at this early stage, Jota has also attracted significant investment – his ownership of 8.1% is higher than that of Theo Walcott, Richarlison and Cesc Fabregas, among others, in the same price band.

The History

Having spent his formative years with Gondomar SC and Pacos Ferreira, Jota began his senior career with the latter club in 2014/15.

Scoring one goal and assisting another on his debut in Pacos’ 4-0 cup win over Atletico SC Reguengos, Jota then went on to make ten league appearances for the Primeira Liga side, scoring on a further two occasions.

An excellent 2015/16 season in which he scored 12 Portuguese top-flight goals led to a move to Atletico Madrid, but the young attacking midfielder was not to make a solitary appearance for the Spanish giants.

A season-long loan with Porto in 2016/17 saw Jota in and out of the first team, with 12 of his 27 league appearances coming as a substitute. The youngster was on the scoresheet on eight occasions, three of which came in the 4-0 win over Nacional early in the season.

Jota’s first taste of Champions League action peaked with a goal in the 5-0 win over Leicester City in December of that campaign.

That Wolves were able to convince the young Portuguese midfielder to move to a side playing in the English second tier in the summer of 2017 demonstrated the club’s financial muscle and ambition.

As well as scoring on 17 occasions, Jota registered five assists across Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign.

The Prospects

Playing much of last season on the left of a front three in Santo’s unwavering 3-4-3 formation, Jota has also, on occasion, been deployed as the spearhead in the Wolves attack.

Jota indeed started as the nominated “centre-forward” in Wolves’ 1-1 friendly draw with Ajax, with fellow Portuguese wingers Helder Costa and Diego Cavaleiro flanking him.

It remains to be seen in which position Jota starts the season and all eyes will be on Wolves’ remaining four pre-season friendlies to ascertain further clues. Jota certainly has competition up top: Mexican striker Raul Jimenez has arrived from parent club Benfica on a season-long deal, while Wolves have made Leo Bonatini’s loan move a permanent one over the summer.

Bonatini scored on 12 occasions in 2017/18 but all of his goals came in the first half of the season, with the Brazilian striker subsequently enduring a five-month barren spell and losing his place in the side.

Santo may, meanwhile, decide to gradually ease Jimenez into English football following his loan move. The Mexico international is far from guaranteed to plunder league goals: in four seasons with Atletico Madrid and Benfica, Jimenez has not hit double figures once.

Jimenez’s physicality and ability to bring his team-mates into play may ultimately see him lead the line, but Jota is a goal threat in whichever position he plays. The Portuguese midfielder, indeed, scored in the 2-1 win over Basel on July 10 while drifting in from the left flank.

Jota’s total of 120 goal attempts last season was unsurpassed by any other Wolves player (only Brentford’s Ollie Watkins had more in the Championship), as was his minutes-per-shot average of 30.3.

Eighty-three of Jota’s 120 shots were from inside the opposition penalty area; those tempted by Ruben Neves’ budget price should note that the £5.0m-rated midfielder only had three efforts on goal from inside the box.

Jota also edged his compatriot in terms of creativity, producing 53 key passes to Neves’ 37.

Appearing in 44 of Wolves’ 46 league matches last season, Jota looks like a fairly nailed pick this time out – something that can’t be said for several other midfielders in the £6.5m price bracket (Juan Mata, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Erik Lamela etc).

Wolves face only two of last season’s top six sides in the first ten Gameweeks, a run of fixtures that includes home matches against Everton, Burnley, Southampton and Watford.

Whilst spending £6.5m on a midfielder playing for a newly promoted side constitutes something of a “punt”, this is a Wolves squad with a wealth of international and European experience to their name. The step up to the Premier League should be far less daunting for Jota and co than it will be for the average top-flight new boys.

      I’d go for A.

Also because there is a lack of good 7.0 striker options and a plethora of good 6.5 mid options imo, in case Jota/Zaha doesn’t work out and you need to get rid.

I have noticed that we know many important things only after Gameweek one so isn't it wise to save 0.5 in the bank so that we can transfer in some players after Gameweek one because at that time that player's price might have increased by 0.1??

    1. seanraggettheader
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

Maybe. I suppose the flip side is you take that 7.0m player because he's 0.5 cheaper and the one everyone is transferring in is the 7.5! You're also assuming you're in a position to directly move from a player to another when in reality it might be more of a shuffle (say Mane scores a hat trick first day, which is not impossible).

      1. OverTinker
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

No, one may need to transfer in another player of same price but he can't do that since he hasn't got 0.1 in the bank. And that price will keep on going up.

I mean the other thing is if you're that worried to make the transfer in GW1 when someone has scored points, just beat the price rise?

Can always catch the price hike, 0.5 ITB is a good move otherwise too

I think Aubameyang can wait to Gw3 if Aguero looks nailed..

With Salah the prime Gw1 (C)

Aguero looks the prime (C) for Gw2

Bank Gw2 transfer if possible, then reasess Gw3

I took a short look at most 4.5 keepers to see who are good at penalty saving. I didn´t look at more expensive ones since they provide worse value overall and they are not getting in my team for now.

This is what I found (not just premier league pens, but whole career)

    Bettinelli saved 12/32 = 37.5%
    Forster saved 11/30 = 36%
    Matt Ryan saved 11/31 = 35.5%
    Etheridge saved 5/17 = 29%
    Gunn saved 3/11 = 27%
    Gomes saved 14/53 = 26%
    Fabianski saved 10/40 = 25%
    Losl saved 10/40 = 25%
    Guaita saved 7/33 = 21%
    Rui Patricio saved 13/62 = 20%
    Foster saved 9/48 = 18%
    McCarthy saved 2/18 = 11%
    Hennesey saved 5/43 = 11%
    Begovic saved 4 /40 = 10%

This might be helpful when deciding which cheap keeper to pick. Some keepers, like Gunn, have small sample size so those stats might not be very meaningfull but keepers that has faced a lot of penalty kicks might have picked up something along the way. Others, like Begovic and Hennesey don't seem to have picked up much penalty saving skill over the years so they might be best avoided if you want to earn some points, especially if they have bad defences as well.

Hope it helps someone. I will keep an eye out on Forster and will reinstate Ryan next to Fabianski in my team for now.

Jota is MUCH younger and more highly rated.

I don’t think Jota will score 15+ but he’s young and improving with good experience for his young age. I think 6.5 is a bargain and he can grab 8-10 goals and 4 or 5 assists.

Potential means nothing. Results mean everything. Better off getting Zaha or Arnie for 7.0m up front and downgrading Jota to a £4.5m.

Had my heart set both Aubameyang and Agüero from the get go.

Recently I dropped Agüero and currently have just Aubs in my team.

But is he the right one to drop? Going into week 2, Agüero at home to Huddersfield really is captain material. A good performance against Arsenal and we’ll be taking a hit to bring him in. A good performance, even a couple of goals for Auba in week 1, and he still has a difficult fixture in week 2. If that happens, I’d still fancy Agüero in week 2 (as long as he plays).

So... this has surely been asked 100 times, but...

    Agüero, Aubameyang, both, or neither?

I thought I saw something confirming that Aguero will be returning to training on the 30th July - can we be that confident that he will start?

Salah is away to Palace in gw2. He could easily outscore Aguero.

      1. TheDonald
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

Salah could, but it’s surely good to own both if they’re both fit.

I’d have thought that’s ample time to get prepared for week 1 for aguero. If he’s not looking likely to start, I’ll remove, but if team news hints at him playing, he’d be the one player I’d be pooing it over not owning.

Certainly good to own both - but at what price to the rest of your squad?

You'll only captain one of them each week.

Full disclosure: Ignore me - I sold Aguero last season the day before his massive haul against Leicester. For a hit. I bought Aubameyang.

Both long term probably is not worth it because they are so expensive and therefore provide bad value per million. They do get lots of points, but you can only captain one.

Therefore I would say one is enough, and I think it is really 50/50. I'm tempted to say Aguero, but City have other good options as well for less money.

I have Auba btw but support Arsenal so there you go.

442 with Kun, Auba and Salah looks quite decent, no? Something like:

    4.5 4.5
    Robertson Bailly Douglas Cedric Tomkins
    Salah Mahrez Sigurdsson Cairney 4.5
    Kun Auba 4.5

I like it, but of course you rely on the GKs you choose at 4.5 and your bench doesn't offer much in case someone in your 11 fails.

Neverthless, Robbertson, Bailly, Douglas, Salah, Mahrez, Sigurdsson, Kun and Auba, all in one team is great.

You could also downgrade Mahrez to D.Silva or Kun (who will rotate) to Firmino and upgrade the third striker or the goalkeeper.

A great choice, potential for great returns but guaranteed frustration. There's Robbo and Firmino, maybe Keita to compete for our Liverpool picks. 12% ownership not a differential.

I hear you mate, really hoping he changes his ways this season but he's so stubborn I doubt it. Allison is a real coup for Liverpool, he's a real class act, could play in a back three he's that good on the ball. It's hard to admit being a MUN fan but LIV are beginning to look the real deal.

Van Bissaka has played every pre-season match for Palace so far, chosen ahead of Ward - including a match when Roy said he would play his strongest team available.

Has played well too. Only concern is Ward recently signed a 3 year contract.

Will switch Zaha to Tosun or Arnie if he leaves.

Well aware that Martial and Shaw are short term. Happy to move them on to Arsenal assets in GW3.

Hopefully Begovic can pick up some save points. Rotates well with Fabianski who looks like the pick of the 4.5 keepers to me. If Schmeichel goes to Chelsea I'll get him and a 4.0 instead.

My case for 4.5 4.0 keeper combo compared to Rotating keepers is that the cheap keepers usually get hauls / particular more save points against better teams rather than teams who they may be better than but the opposition may knick a goal.

For example say you had a Heaton / Marshall rotation in 2016/17

Heaton has united away and Marshall has Watford at home so your certainly going to start Marshall. Heaton goes on to get a stupid number of saves and a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw and Marshall gets 0 saves as Hull lose 1-0 from a Michael Dawson own goal. It's just frustrating to have save points / clean sheets on the bench and imo its therefore more beneficial to bank 0.5 and just have a 4.5 keeper with 4.0 fodder an play him every week.

I'm assuming he's willing to sell Shaw for the best option if he's likely to lose his place.

That said, with 2 City mids, Mendy, Bailly and potential for Burnley to rotate for EL, I think your bench needs to be a little stronger, Sadio 🙂

For me as players it's not even close - Arnie. But if you consider fixtures it becomes tighter. Arnie sets up goals too, Wood doesn't. And Arnie isn't potentially competing with Vokes and Barnes around Europe.

Ha. Even if he was £14.0m he'd be the first name in my squad with that rate of chances. Fixed!

      Damn. Good. Job.

One of my favourites I've seen on here. Small preferences to consider like Arnie or Zaha, Cedric or Tomkins, maybe the 0.5 for Coleman to Mendy, Jota or Richarlison but nothing that you're not already aware of.

Perhaps consider Jota to Costa, Deulofeu to Richarlison and then you also have a 0.5 for Shaw to Bailly or Mahrez to Sane if he's looking more nailed - if there is such a thing in a Pep side.

      8.

It's hard to have 10 because there's always going to be a weakness somewhere with the 100m budget, but the midfield of Martial/Mkhi/Jota seems a bit risky. One not nailed and out of favour last season, Arsenal a slight unknown quality (don't begrudge the pick) and one new player to the Prem. They could all do well, but give me an Eriksen or similar all day (I guess that's out of budget)!

Thanks for the advice. Eriksen is definitely an option, so I’ll try to squeeze him in there
