Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

Idk if a strategy like this has crossed people's minds, but are there any WC players you know you will want in a couple of weeks but are just not gonna be fit to start the season? Could it be worthwhile getting them in early and just benching to avoid future transfer hassle? Especially seeing as teams like watford cardiff and wolves have a decent few opening fixtures and could then easily be relegated to a permanent bench fodder role? Could also present a good opportunity to bargain hunt and build value perhaps?

Yes, I'm getting KdB and Mendy on the assumption they won't play GW1. As you say, the likes of Bennett, and Wan-Bis, Ralls and Cairney are fine to pitch in before relegating to your bench.

Expecting to see a lot of City goals from GW2, considering Sane is in the team:

What will be the new Chelsea line-up? Chances of Fabregas / Pedro nailing a starting spot?

    1. Ask Yourself

Fabregas no as Jorginho has his spot but Pedro maybe if Willian leaves

Willian had gone to Barca for 67million. Agreed today.

      2. Piggs Boson

Sarri played Jorginho as a deep lying playmaker for Napoli in a midfield 3.

    2. Homo Neanderthalensis
      • 12 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

I know that they are getting rid of the wingback system and moving to 4 at the back. Alonso and Moses attacking returns will be impacted.

    3. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

      Sarri loves a 433.

Jorginho will likely be the holding player, Kante box-to-box, and then one creative role for either Fabregas, RLC or Barkley.
We'll know a lot more after the transfer window and community shield.

      1. Ask Yourself
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

The creative role requires pace and energy to press which Fabregas does not have. He’ll be jorginho’s back up at regista

  11. DantheManinaPan

I want to have a look at a certain set of stats.

The idea is to set the "price above base" of each player (i.e. Price - 4.0 for defenders and price - 4.5 for attackers) and then find the number of points per player excluding appearance points. Then I would divide one by the other as a measure of value.

    1. I'm absolutely certain this has been done before. If you know of someone/somewhere that has done it, then please let me know!

    2. If not, then any tips how do organise the data. Excel the best choice?

    3. Do you think this will actually provide a good measure for value.

I'm aiming to follow the Salah (c) + Auba/Aguero + optimal value everywhere else strategy, and this would be useful for comparing e.g. cheap vs premium keepers and 7.5 vs 9.5 mids etc.

    Thanks!

I have my doubts about it, but not actually looked into it myself.

Surely a 4.5m player would have infinite value, because they are at the base price and effectively cost zero?

So playing 4.0/4.5 players have infinite value cos you're dividing by zero?

Latest draft. Wat do you think?

    Pickford - Stekelenburg
Smalling - van Dijk - Vestergaard - Aké - Mee
    Sané - Mané - Mahrez - Martial - Cairney
    Aubameyang - Tosun - Reid

But I kinda like that. Makes me able to adapt during players coming back from WC and over international breaks. Otherwise I will most likely have to use an early WC.

Lots of good players in there, I like the goalkeeper pairing.

Don't like the defence. Vestergaard and Ake to Hoedt (maybe even Bednarek) and Daniels if you want to cover those defences. Smalling not nailed/good enough for the price.

I like Reid but don't fancy him to do that well and their fixtures aren't the best.

Sane and Mahrez both good but I'd probably just go with one of em.

Fair points. Just like the fxitures (Aké and Vestergaard), and looking to play it safe with first choices.

Smaling, Martial & Mahrez/Sané will soo enough be: Mkhi, Cheapie & Sterling 😉

Smalling is nailed the first 3 GW's or so 😉

Like the look of Neves, Cairney, Kenedy and Costa at 5.0.
Hughes is also popular at that price.

At 4.5 there isn't much, Romeu, Stephens or if you're feeling more punty Chalobah or even Ward from Cardiff.

Personally I don’t think Emerson will start ahead of Alonso but otherwise I like the team and the punt on Pedro

Auba and mikhi, too much to have both for first hard two GWs?
Mikhi spot, maybe Jota, Walcott, but Sessegnon have better first three GWs

have Sanchez , he can become KDB after the first couple of games if he doesn't do the business so its no big deal having him

    Thoughts on this draft lads?

    Pickford, Steklenberg
    Mendy, Robertson, Cedric, Wan-Bissaka, Peltier
    Salah, Sanchez, Silva, Jota, Delofeu
    Aguero, Zaha, Quaner

    (3-5-2)

    Cheers all 🙂

Looks pretty good mate to be fair.

Personally I think Sanchez is way over priced. I’d go for Eriksen +1M or double pool attack with Mane + 1M.

You could then upgrade Pickford to DDG, or upgrade a mid or whatever.

Are people worried about Alonso's place on the Chelsea team with the arrival of this new coach ?

Yes. Even if he keeps his place he'll be much more pegged back as well.

I have Auba, Aguero, Salah and Sane all in my current draft.

In your opinion(s), will this make my team too unbalanced and, if so, who would you axe?

      Yes

I would axe Salah cos I like the flexibility up front

Aub or Kun? This is driving me insane. Kun has the fixtures but he's likely to be rotated with Jesus, as per. I feel this could be Aub's year too, but going without Kun will be scary in GW2.

Same thoughts here. Which is why I've got both atm. Need some bargains to emerge over pre-season for it to be viable really.

          352 atm.

But if Fulham buy a RW, Kamara won't be an option, so I'll switch to 343.

          Ryan - Button
          Robertson - Bailly - Douglas - Wan-Bissaka - Peltier
          Salah - Mahrez - 6.5 - Jota - Deulofeu
          Aguero - Aubameyang - Kamara?

I've got Aguero for the first 2 weeks, and then I'll decide whether to bring in Auba. I get the feeling I'll be switching between those two all season.

Mate I was going mad trying to decide between them, and then when talk of Kane being back I went into overdrive.

In the end the only cure is to get all of them 🙂 Feels good after.

I think Auba can match Kun, if not do better. However, I don't think any Arsenal midfielder will get close to the returns of KDB, Sane, Sterling, Silva etc.

      Auba + City mid(s) imo.
