Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

    Hi guys.

Anyone care to run the rule over this mob/

    Pickford
    Mendy Robertson Shaw
    Salah Sane Siggi Jota
    Aguero Firmino Kamara

    Stekelenberg Wan-Biss Stephens Peltier

Main bone of contention being Aguero or Aubameyang and what to do with Shaw as and when Young gets back in

I really feel that the best plan this season is to get sure starters, forget world cup doubts and plan an early wild card.

Apart from the the first two, I do this every year 🙂

I always Wildcard early too, ore heouh necessity than plan though. It generally works out well luckily... I think around GW3/4 we have plenty of data to go on, but each extra week you can wait up to the second international break GW7 is a bonus. Holding it any longer I never see the point of really, as he second one kicks in GW19 anyway

Always playing an early wildcard is different from planning an early wildcard.

The former is circumstantial. The latter is just throwing it away when you can instead pick good nailed players and save it for a better time.

So trying to go for a balanced team, how does this look?? Any suggestions???

    Ederson
    Pva, shaw, bertrand
    Martial, neves, Mkhitaryan, salah
    Aguero, wilison, kane

    Bench, speroni, stephens, peltier, zanka

Bertrand is wasted money, better go gor Cedric if you need Soton cover. As far as I know Bertrand played as a centre-back during friendlies

Would not start with Kane. History and those last 2-3games at the WC is enough to wait and see with him. Notorious slow starter.

Martial would be my other concern by easy swap if he doesn't do it.

    3. Netley Lucas

Kane looked dreadful as the WC progressed

    4. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Salah, Aguero, Kane is some serious firepower... could be lethal.

Although I would rather have two 9.0ish players instead of those two, particularly City mids and Firmino/Mané as I think they’ll keep pace within 3-4 points of Kun/Kane, and you can’t really captain Kun/Kane with Salah... otherwise it’s a bit of a waste of 13.0m but this is just my thinking it could be totally wrong.

Wilson I would not be going near with a barge pole though, he blanked for about 10 consecutive games after his hattrick last year from memory, albeit he does have a nice fixture GW1, but does he start or is King or Defoe, or 2 or all 3 and who takes pens etc.

Martial is a good punt for now!

Ballsy but I like it. I’m personally unsure if Kane will start the season and don’t like Bellerin although he’s capable of switching it on at any time.

    2. Good effort.
prefer a 4.5 keeper & Robertson to Alis

Best attempt at a team with 3 big hitters

    Patricio
    Mendy Robbo Shaw Tomkins 4m
    Salah Martial Richarlison Ciarney Hughes
    Auba Kun Zaha

343 /433 with the 2 5m mids and Tomkins rotating.

Martial and rich for if they end up going to Chelsea and Everton. Rich has had a break so shouldn't burn our as fast and is now used to the league and in arguably a better team. Martial will be a bargain if guaranteed games. Only issue is if Shaw loses out but Tomkins can cover.

I personally see no use in the 3 big hitters, not enough value if you're not captaining them, eg think firmino + mahrez would be better value than aguero + martial

      1. JamTart
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

I've seen this theory a lot on here and I'm doing my best to get behind it. My issue is I really like the idea of those 5m mids rotating since both could do well and im not sure where I would spend the additional funds other than maybe adding pogba or somebody after the WC guys are back.

What would you suggest out of curiosity?

        1. Stats Don\'t Lie
          • 11 Years
          7 years, 4 months ago

I personally am very fond of flexibility at start of the season, ie easy jumps between price brackets onto bandwagons, for example

A front line like Auba, firmino, zaha would be the ideal of flexibility, allowing an easy jump onto a bandwagon in any price bracket.

In your current teams case if say sanchez/eriksen do well you'll have to sacrifice at least one of your big hitters, since the jump from auba to a firmino is 1.5, youd probably be looking at downgrading all the way to the mid priced wood/zaha/arnie bracket for sufficient funds, this now completely comprises yoyr team structure in my eyesa and gives you money that could have been better utilised elsewhere starting the season.

          Hope this helps!

            • 11 Years
            7 years, 4 months ago

As an example, here's what I came up with as a rather flexible budget distribution:

            5.5, 4.0
            6, 5.5, 5, 4.5, 4
            13, 9.5, 8.5, 7, 5
            11, 7, 4.5

            7 years, 4 months ago

Yeah that makes good sense. Thanks for taking the time to write out the long response.

I'm half committed to an early WC once bandwagon and WC players come into it anyway but I guess your strategy doesn't have to rely on that. I'll definitely consider it

            1. Stats Don\'t Lie
              • 11 Years
              7 years, 4 months ago

Idk, might just be my fairly cautious approach but to me a WC shouldn't have to be planned, it should be a necessity, should be there for when all your players suddenly go off form or you get 4/5 injuries. If you've planned and prepared well enough you should be able to make any changes you want in your team without needing it, using a max of a -4

      2. JamTart
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

Realise my point was badly made since the example you gave have the same value... it's been a heavy weekend.

But if I dropped auba and went with salah as my only 10m+ I don't know where I would spend the money.

Idk if a strategy like this has crossed people's minds, but are there any WC players you know you will want in a couple of weeks but are just not gonna be fit to start the season? Could it be worthwhile getting them in early and just benching to avoid future transfer hassle? Especially seeing as teams like watford cardiff and wolves have a decent few opening fixtures and could then easily be relegated to a permanent bench fodder role? Could also present a good opportunity to bargain hunt and build value perhaps?

Losing a pre season game after spending all that money is unforgivable.

    Klopp out.

not sure how this may be relevant as it's easy to search up anyway, but these are the top 10 currently most owned players:

    1. Salah - 47.2%
    2. Firmino - 37.6%
    3. Kane - 33.5%
    4. DDG - 30.5%
    5. Zaha - 30.4%
    6. KDB - 27.2%
    7. Trippier - 25.5%
    8. Aubameyang - 24.6%
    9=. Fabianski - 23.8%
    9=. Arnautovic - 23.8%

indeed, I think many newbies are basing their team on players who performed well at the WC or scored the most last year

Except today's article was noting that a lot of these are active. Loads of people this week transferred in the likes of Maguire, Trippier and Kane!

I'm mystified by the 4m defender Malone. No one's (sensibly) mentioned him here yet he's in 11% of squads!

Reckon DDG will slip out of top 10. Can see Robertson and VVD making it 4 Pool in tip 10.

Casuals will keep DDG #1 keeper for sure.
To be fair, he is the most secure of a water-tight United defence, even if he's not on my watchlist.

I agree as many start tinkering more with their squads and stop insisting with the auto-picks

in the rankings, currently Robertson is no. 20 and VVD no. 30, with 16% and 13.7% ownership respectively

Yeah, not much to learn from early pre-season. Teams usually play their best XI in the final pre-season game though, so that's a good indicator.

Expecting to see a lot of City goals from GW2, considering Sane is in the team:

    Aguero / Cairney (for example)

    or

    Mahrez / Arnie (or Zaha)

What will be the new Chelsea line-up? Chances of Fabregas / Pedro nailing a starting spot?

    1. Ask Yourself

Fabregas no as Jorginho has his spot but Pedro maybe if Willian leaves

Sarri played Jorginho as a deep lying playmaker for Napoli in a midfield 3.

I know that they are getting rid of the wingback system and moving to 4 at the back. Alonso and Moses attacking returns will be impacted.

    3. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

      Sarri loves a 433.

Jorginho will likely be the holding player, Kante box-to-box, and then one creative role for either Fabregas, RLC or Barkley.
We'll know a lot more after the transfer window and community shield.

      1. Ask Yourself
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

The creative role requires pace and energy to press which Fabregas does not have. He’ll be jorginho’s back up at regista
