Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

If these three players actually have a very good shout of nailing a place in their squads, would it then be a disastrous idea to own them all? Getting 3 lotterytickets instead of just one?

Due to lack of funds - Ryan/Button combination at 8.5.

Decent keeper playing from a pretty defensive team, with a good penalty save record.

Dull choice - but there are worse out there

      Ryan - Steele

Because I'm a tight git. And I think the pts difference between budget and premium keepers isn't as large as the difference between budget and premium defs/mids/fwds.

Pelligrini loves to attack, so I'm not sure how the Hammers defence will be. The fixtures are bad too, and I don't know when I'll WC.

Brighton sit deep, so Ryan gets lots of low percentage shots to save. Amazing pts total last season for a 4.5m player. He's been underpriced this year.

With Dunk and Duffy staying at 4.5m...surely if you were going Brighton defence, one of those would be better than Ryan for the same money?

Currently on Pickford and Stekelenburg. Don't think I'll want any Everton defenders, one more spot should be enough if I want any of the mids or forwards.

Happy enough with the fixtures and save potential even in the tough games and not having to look at any big hauls left on the bench.

If I change and go with two 4.5m options one of them will probably be Foster.

      Pros

      He’s a Mourinho buy
Lukaku still in World Cup recovery mode
On free kicks to start the season.
Looking for redemption after poor start to Man Utd career
Price is cheapest he’s been in three FPL seasons

      Cons

      Price... if he doesn’t perform
Playing in a team that doesn’t match his pace, guile
Moody Mourinho turns on his own players, often

He’s in my draft team so far.

Agreed. Still has a lot to improve, missed an easy header against Club America that led to a goal, but his raw ability is amazing.

Strange that there’s no Vardy love. WC cannot explain it. Plenty played in WC and have greater interest in them. 17/18 points per 18/19 pound are equal or better than Zaha and Arnie. Tough opening fixture, but very nice fixture list follows over the next 14 weeks. Second highest scoring forward in 17/18. Consistent points yield over last few years. Do people think Mahrez departure will have a significant impact on Vardy’s output? Genuinely interested in whether there’s something I don’t know or I’m not thinking about. Thanks.

Mahrez a big factor. Vardy does his main work vs the better teams.

Cheers, gents. Had not heard the Atletico rumor. Hope Maddison can assist with loss of Mahrez from a distribution perspective. I’ve always enjoyed owning Vardy. Guess he’s a wait-and-see.

Knockaert scored the same goals & asists in Championship 2015/16 as Jota 2016/17 (same shots per game, shots in penalty box, even more chances created, key passes...)

He was valued 5.5 and failed, now Jota is rated 6.5 hmm...

Knockheart was injured for first half of season which had an impact i think. Couldnt get up to speed after that. Brighton also rubbish.

Jota is not injured and plays higher up the pitch. Wolves are not championship level team. There is something odd going on there. Neves played champs league for porto. Jota is from atletico. Patricio is a euro 2016 hero. Manager sounds brilliant.

You make some good points and i buy into the dont get promoted players theory but wolves are the best promoted side in years. Not sure it applies to them.

      Mane Dilva* Martial Ramsey* 5.0

Yep. But if Martial isn't filling me with confidence, I'm likely to upgrade to Mahrez and downgrade Kun to Firmino. Too early to say anything for sure in general though 🙂

        1. The Royal Robin
          • 10 Years

That's the thing, having both of them from the get go gives you the opportunity to downgrade - but asset stripping your team to make funds for one of them is going to be a pain. I think there is a lot of value in defence this season too. With a lot of attacking wingbacks. So 532 is what I'm looking at initially.

            • 9 Years

I mean I'm likely to make that move before GW1. But what you're saying makes sense. However, I would say that it's overstated how difficult it is to "assest strip" your team for an upgrade. It's more about which individual transfers you think you're likely to make. For example, if I'm planning to get an Arsenal/Chelsea midfielder after a couple of weeks, then I could build a team with a 7.5 mid & Aguero. Whereas if I get Firmino and Mahrez, then I'm essentially planning to have money in the bank in GW3ish when I sell Mahrez instead of spending that money on Firmino > Aguero before GW1.

            Hope that makes sense.

Possibly, but Pogba scored that in a defensive team for the last 30GW's. imagine if he was played in an attacking role. He would hit 170pts easily.

Pogba hit 138 in 25gms. That amount to 195pts over 38 gwks. Imagine the Numbers if he's set free offensively. He might very well become this years most valuable FPL-asset

When opening gwks have settled and the game has settled, i can picture him KDB and Eriksen as the most valuable, NON-captain, highpriced mids. Thats if one rates 8.0 as high ofc

Problem is, if salah or mane get un-ignorably hot, you can only transfer them for keita without destroying your team apart, which you would still have to do given huge price difference

I think the difficulty i'm having is deciding between Kieta and Robbo. Not sure i want a Liverpool double up in defence, but Kieta hard to ignore. I've got Salah, and i'll keep him for the reasons youve just mentioned, easier to get someone in thats hot that rip the team apart

If you believe Keita will reach 170, you should Get him. If you dont back Salah, make sure you Get one or two heavyhitters and be content with the idea that it might backfire bigtime if he keeps up the momentum from last year.

Just seen an interesting stat on Twitter:

Crystal Palace have never lost when Tomkins and Sakho play together. 13 games - 10 wins, 3 draws.

Wan-Bissaka could be a beast if he does nail that spot. But Tomkins looks great value regardless.

Lots of potential bargains at Palace.

If Benteke hits form, he could be a good buy. Rumours of Schurrle signing for Palace too 😯

6.5m too much for (admittedly lot of) penalties and maybe a free kick or two when Palace have great budget options (possibly including a 4m defender and a 5m striker) in every position.

I didn't have him last season (apart from FH35) ðŸ™

He is the highest scoring player at 6.5 from last season. Nearly 20 more points than Richarlison.

This was the Wolves line up for the 45 minute half. The game finished 0-0 after 45 minutes and went to penalties has per the tournament. The penalty takers for Wolves were in the following order below.

      Patricio
      Hause Coady Bennett
      Giles Goncalves Neves Buur
      Jota Jimenez Enobakhare

      Neves (scored)
      Jimenez (missed)
      Coady (missed)
      Jota (scored)
      Goncalves (scored)
      Enobakhare (scored)
      Giles (missed)

The second line up for the next 45 minutes this time against Real Betis.

        Ruddy
        Boly Batth Saiss
        John Watt Gibbs-White Doherty
        Cavaleiro Ashley-Seal Costa

Does this mean the penalty priority is going to be something like Neves > Goncalves > Jota > Jiminez > Coady? Not sure how teams usually set up for shootouts.

Was hoping would give better insight between Neves and Jota. Neves went first which was great, but would of expected Jota to be second. Jimenez and Coady went before him. Only a friendly, so dunno how much can take from it.

        Neves is the new Milivojevic.

Playing deep, penalty taker and highly owned by casuals like Jonty.

Disagree. Rude to limit his owners to dullards and casuals.

On pens, some direct FKs, great player, 3 to 5 goals expected from open play outside the box,... all this for 5.0

Casuals wont get him, I am, and trust me Im no casual

          Jota is the casuals pick.
He’s Portuguese FFS. If he was that good he would have been in Portugal’s WC squad.

He just cant stop scoring in preseason lol...
