Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

Yep. But if Martial isn't filling me with confidence, I'm likely to upgrade to Mahrez and downgrade Kun to Firmino. Too early to say anything for sure in general though 🙂

      1. The Royal Robin
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

That's the thing, having both of them from the get go gives you the opportunity to downgrade - but asset stripping your team to make funds for one of them is going to be a pain. I think there is a lot of value in defence this season too. With a lot of attacking wingbacks. So 532 is what I'm looking at initially.

        1. Deulofail
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 4 months ago

I mean I'm likely to make that move before GW1. But what you're saying makes sense. However, I would say that it's overstated how difficult it is to "assest strip" your team for an upgrade. It's more about which individual transfers you think you're likely to make. For example, if I'm planning to get an Arsenal/Chelsea midfielder after a couple of weeks, then I could build a team with a 7.5 mid & Aguero. Whereas if I get Firmino and Mahrez, then I'm essentially planning to have money in the bank in GW3ish when I sell Mahrez instead of spending that money on Firmino > Aguero before GW1.

          Hope that makes sense.

    Your thoughts

    Fab. 4.0
    Mendy. Coleman. Daniels. Cedric. Lovren
    Salah. Eriksen. Mkhitaryan. Deulofeu. 4.5
    Aguero. Auba. 4.5

Lovren will be on bench whilst one of Cedric or Daniels plays, till lovren is back in team. A great value

Not sure Lovren walks straight back in if Liverpool keep CS in the first one or two games, which is possible.

If I go Mahrez instead of Eriksen. I can upgrade Lovern to either VVD or Robertson.

But Eriksen trumps Mahrez I reckon.

Many will disagree, but for me you have one big-hitter too many.

Not a fan of the popular Daniels pick at all. Would rather have Tomkins/Boly.

Would be concerned about playing Deulofeu each week.

I actually think there is good value in 5.0m midfielders this year.

Attacking, nailed players who may be on set-pieces.

Looking at having 2 in rotation for 10m - Costa, Hughes, Kenedy, Cairney, Pritchard etc.

Gotta do something to combat the woeful lack of discussion efficiency around here. Content is otherwise treagically irrelevant or lost after a few minutes 🙂 I won't stand for it!

Baines, really? Then I should switch Coleman to Baines.

Don't quote me on it, but Siggy has not taken one yet for Everton, and last season Rooney started on them until he was ousted for missing a few and then Baines took and scored 2 in the remainder of the season.
I assume from that he is still on them.

not sure im getting the Arnie love - the usual price for a West Ham striker over the past few seasons is about 6m
I get that they will probably be stronger this season with new manager and good signings

but he's coming in at 7m and has these fixtures in the first 10
liv BOU ars WOL eve CHE MUN bri SPUDs lei

tell me im wrong but I just cant see a bandwagon forming. wk 11 onwards however, Wilshere/Yarmalenko/Arnie all look like good ways to invest funds

for me, Zaha looks a better bet at that price point, or even push the funds into midfield and upgrade that 5th mid to Mkhi

I have a feeling he's going to do pretty well - they've upgraded all around him, should be more attacking, and the guy is a great finisher with both feet...dare I say fixture proof!?

I'm personally going for Auba & Kun, and I'm likely to downgrade one to a scoring Arnie, Firmino, Tosun or even King which will allow me to upgrade the other to Kane if I want to.

This, basically. I currently have the possibility of Mendy/Robertson/PVA > Bellerin/Kolasinac sometime after GW2, but it's a but early to be tempted into the Arsenal defence with better options who have better short-term fixtures and are also good long-term options anyway.

After a couple GWs, I might be after 2 of Lacazette, Mkhitaryan, Ramsey or another Arsenal player to join Aubameyang, and it's much more likely I can make a reasonable informed decision after the season has started.

Second draft for the season. Confused whether I should spend 6.0m on Iheanacho, or just downgrade to Quaner / Kamara and redistribute the funds in defense / midfield.

    Fabianski / Foster
    Coleman / Cedric / Daniels / Tomkins / 4.0m
    Salah / Mahrez / Mkhitaryan / Walcott / Deulofeu
    Aguero / Firmino / Iheanacho

Thanks. I would like to tinker. But, I am also believing that this is going to be the breakout season for Iheanacho. With Mahrez out, it would be more direct balls from Albrighton. Benefits for Iheanacho, I reckon.

    Giles Goncalves Neves Buur
    Jota Jimenez Enobakhare

    Neves (scored)
    Jimenez (missed)
    Coady (missed)
    Jota (scored)
    Goncalves (scored)
    Enobakhare (scored)
    Giles (missed)

The second line up for the next 45 minutes this time against Real Betis.

      Ruddy
      Boly Batth Saiss
      John Watt Gibbs-White Doherty
      Cavaleiro Ashley-Seal Costa

Does this mean the penalty priority is going to be something like Neves > Goncalves > Jota > Jiminez > Coady? Not sure how teams usually set up for shootouts.

Was hoping would give better insight between Neves and Jota. Neves went first which was great, but would of expected Jota to be second. Jimenez and Coady went before him. Only a friendly, so dunno how much can take from it.

      Neves is the new Milivojevic.

Playing deep, penalty taker and highly owned by casuals like Jonty.

Disagree. Rude to limit his owners to dullards and casuals.

On pens, some direct FKs, great player, 3 to 5 goals expected from open play outside the box,... all this for 5.0

Casuals wont get him, I am, and trust me Im no casual

        Jota is the casuals pick.
He’s Portuguese FFS. If he was that good he would have been in Portugal’s WC squad.

He just cant stop scoring in preseason lol...

He's about 20, that's why he wasn't in Portugals WC squad - you could say the same of Neves.

Does anyone think a 4-5-1 formation is viable? I've seen a few people start to look at playing 5 at the back to accommodate both Aguero and Aubu up front, but what's your thoughts on picking and sticking with one of them and having a strong defence and midfield (which is frequently touted on here as having more overall value anyway).
