After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Watford under Silva: Highest xG involvement = Richarlison
Watford post Silva: Highest xG involvement = Deeney

I know his finishing is so so bad pre&post Silva, but he's gotta be the main man at Everton now right?

PS: Sorry for sharing member's data, but not sure how to make this statement otherwise.

Stick to my plan, its a marathon not a sprint.

        Dont over think.

        Stop taking hits, d1ckhead.

Hold premiums, class is permanent form is temporary.

        Shunt out the others.

On subs, put the lads in who at home.

        - Iwobi here too.
        - Selling KDB for Mkhi because I had 2FTs and nothing to do.
        - Wildcarding from my 523 team to the template in GW10 (I think) because I bought Coutinho the evening before he got injured or something. Had enough other other issues for this mistake to catalyse a 30pt immediate loss from the WC

        1. Deulofail
          • 9 Years

          - starting with Kane instead of Lukaku, and sticking with him for too long, captaining frequently. (Went without for the last half of the season and did well despite his hauls)

            - Regarding Iwobi, I failed to sell him in time before his price dropped after GW1, giving me a 99.9m squad 😆

In other words, mistakes I won't make again: not sticking to the plan, not adapting the plan, reacting too soon, reacting too late, reacting to nothing.

In other words: mistakes I will make again. 😆

        A) Don't try to be clever for the sake of being clever by taking unjustified risks.

        B) If a risk doesn't pay off, don't take another unjustified risk in an attempt to immediately make back lost ground.

        C) Remember there's plenty of opportunity

Not jumping on the Salah wagon early enough.

        Too many hits.

        Started with a premium defense.
I think a premium defense is something best left to be built upon a WC, when you know how teams/players are performing.

Not captaining Salah whilst in form, while simultaneously hoping that Kane will come good against sides he should at least be getting a brace minimum against.

I have not. I guess I have been living under a rock. Well I think I might be switching 4.0 keepers. Steele seems to be a future investment while Button is the actual keeper than can be called upon when needed.

Depends on position. Defenders I plan for long term stability.

Attackers I try and catch early form, so there are usually 2/3 places in my team in constant transfer in/out...

              Foster - Ryan
              Robertson - PvA - Mendy - Coleman - WanB
              Salah - Ramsey - Eriksen - Richarlison - Chalobah
              Auba - Tosun - Kamara

What would you do with the extra 0.5 ITB?
              A) Keep
              B) Get Alisson/Ederson as a set & forget - meaning that I won't be able to double up on Liverpool/City in attack
              C) Upgrade Chalobah to someone like Hughes so I have a stronger 1st sub
              D) Eriksen -> KdB and hope he starts GW 1
              E) Coleman -> Smalling. Mourinho seems to love him and Silva's sides aren't known for keeping clean sheets.
              F) Something else

Well gents, rejigged my team a little bit: Swapped out Siggy + Coleman + Patricio to Richarlison + Mendy + Pickford.
Was set on Siggy by a mile over Walcott but the mill saved on Richarlison seems sensible to start with?
            Hows she looking?

            Pickford
            Robertson/Bailly/Azpi/Mendy/PVA
            Salah/Mahrez/Richarlison

Not really mate, its just Richarlison under Silva is exciting and as much as I.like Siggy, cant fully justify the 1.0 more!
Was always debating whether to go Patricio or Ederson.for City defensive cover but a punt on Mendy appeals.
Pickford and Stek set and forget mightned be a bad plan.

Not really. Warnock already has a well organised functional defence, and has added young promising talent in Murphy and Reid to hit teams on the counter.
They’ll be battling, Ralls on set pieces could be golden.

I think your team is right. A Man City clean sheet is not guaranteed against Arsenal and playing in a back 4 Mendy is not guaranteed attacking returns. With a 4.0 keeper you have to play Ederson. However, not sure about 2 City defensive options. It might limit who you want in attack later.

It's a punt, but compare his output under Silva to afterwards. Something like 105 v 23 points.

Burnt out after a 14 month season too.

Sure, his finishing is shite, but there is potential there. Easy to hop on, or hop off at that price regardless so it won't matter much

still young and a little bit raw, expect big things from him this season. The 6.5 looks good value with EVEs fix and as much as I want to punt on Siggy, I feel Rich looks the better option now.

Some people are very positive on his prospects. That he has all set pieces minus penalties & is nailed is very cheap.

I honestly don’t know him at all but he’s another 6.5 on the watchlist. Along with about 17 others

            Thoughts on willian?
Considering chelsea rejected big offers from barcelona, he seems a key part of sarri's team
            But still has limited gametime?
Hazard will play LW. They will likely get a new CF
            Kante and jorginho as CM
Willian may be first subtitute choice again this season?

Will ask a couple of things which I'm thinking for:

            - Expect Mendy, Bailly to be nailed on, right?

            - I have 7.0M to spend for a midfielder -- what about Mkhi from the beginning?

            - Don't know how Pep will rotate his midfielders... Who do you think will be nailed on except KdB after he takes his rest?

            - Arnie's in my current team despite WHU tough fixtures. Is he in yours? 🙂

            - Have no Man Utd attacker and any Chelsea, Tottenham cover at the moment. Is that going to be a problem?

And now it's a done deal.

              - Yes
              - Take a punt on someone else like Pedro, at least for the first couple of games. Mkhitaryan from gw3.
              - Unfortunately.. None. But given Mahrez age and form, he could be. But it's risky
              - Nope. Too tough fixtures for my liking. I have Aguero + Firmino + 4.5
              - .Probably won't hurt you with United because of Mourinho. Spurs have tough fixtures. Regarding to Chelsea, I've already mentioned Pedro

Thanks for answering all my questions.

                - Why do people suddenly start to like Pedro? He didn't play that well in the previous seasons.

                - Currently have Sane, but wondering whether to downgrade him to Mahrez because every penny maters IMO.

                - Firmino was in my previous draft but then ditched him to strengthen my midfielders.

About Pedro. Imo people think that Pedro should fit nicely into Sarri's team plans. Sarri likes to press high and he needs players who have pace and are willing to run and press. And also in Chelsea there are many players who were in WC (Hazard, Willian, RLC) and maybe need some rest. Also transfer rumours for Hazard & Willian

Next season, David maybe will not play every game, that's why the squad has to be big," said Guardiola.

“He's played more due to his absence, more energy in the legs. The decisions are taken day by day and it is what it is.”

For the 7m mid- I'd go Townsend (great stats late last season) or Richarlison as a punt for 6.5m (maybe Pedro if the new system suddenly suits him more).

Starting with D.Silva myself from City. Hoping he is nailed at the beginning at least but plenty of other options if not- Pogba, Ramsey.

Charlie Austin for me @6m up top. If he gets on the pitch and stays a bit fit he will score. That extra 1m helps too.

Sanchez in for me atm from those teams you mentioned. It means going Salahless tho. Hoping Mane, Sanchez, D Silva, Firm up top can make up for going without Salah.

                I already have Richarlison.
Gotta monitor Pedro then because you're the second guy who mentioned him.

I like Charlie Austin too but he's a big injury prone... Do you think he's going to be nailed on? Praying for him to stay fit as much as possible.

Going Salahless gives you flexibility but I won't go without him...

              - Who knows? But the potential upside for Mendy means I'm choosing him and mentally preparing myself that he'll miss the odd game.

              - I'm currently on Jota/Richarlison - but keeping 0.5m itb in case I want to switch to Mhiki. Auba probably enough for the first two weeks.

              - Who knows? But I'm going with Mahrez. Think he is a more complete player than both Sane and Sterling and potentially more versatile too.

              - Yes. Have Bournemouth, Wolves and Everton in first five gameweeks - so not all bad.

              - Same here. Very comfortable with the situation - but am monitoring potential bargains at Chelsea. Am going Mane over Firmino, as that allows for a quick swap to Eriksen, if required at some point.

                My midfielders are:
                Salah Sane Mkhi Richa Jota

ARS first two fixtures look bad but can’t see a better 7/7.5M option at the moment...

Hi Arndff_ - off the back of your message I have just set up an FPL-specific Twitter account - @Reuser5.

Was tempted to go with Mhiki from the beginning too, but overall I think there are still too many questions about him to justify putting him in for those two difficult fixtures. Having said that, I'm not a fan of planning transfers, especially at this early stage of the season.

My midfield is currently: Salah, Mahrez, Mane, Jota (Chalobah) with 0.5m ITB.

Stop thinking all 15 will play. 3 or 4 defenders, 4 or 5 mids, 2 or 3 fwds.

Lloris Lovren Young Trippier probably back late from the World Cup.

Daniels might not be a starter with Rico coming in.

Neves has 4.9 written all over him.

Jorginho is a defensive mid and will probably never score.

Masuaku listed as a mid now, so his points total from previous years is misleading- they've also brought in loads of new players so we don't know how they'll line up.

I'd start again if I were you.

                Thanks dor the feedback.

Neves on penalties, good fixtures, 5.0 is not a lot

Same as Jorginho, only 5.0, guaranteed starter and I think he could be golden differential, he will play in front of kante and could get some asissts and goals.

Masuaku costs 4.5, a decent bench option. If he continues playing on thr wing like last season I have no worries.

Defence is the real problem, still thinking about what to do here.

Jorginho at Napoli - 133 games 2 goals.

I personally think he’s a terrible FPL option. He takes up a liverpool slot, and would be doing well to get near what Pogba got last year, yet Pogba is generally derided as a bad FPL pick.

He’s supposed to be an absolutely fantastic player though, could be a very shrewd signing from Klopp.

Just not FPL material due to circumstances beyond his control.

I'd lean towards Martial, could lead the line in the first couple of fixtures if Lukaku is eased back after the WC.

Out of those you've listed, can't believe it but I might go for Lamela. (Probably due to the fact you would be moving him on soon after regardless).

I would probably revert to Richarlison /Siggy at the last minute though.

Eriksen over City mids from the off?
Guaranteed to start, could be on pens when Kane isn't playing, and even with Spurs' absentees they should be able to score against Newcastle and Fulham.
I guess Sane, Mahrez and David Silva are probably going to start the season as well but I don't want to have to use a transfer on a City player because he's out of favor.

City mid for me. Away to Rafa's Newcastle isn't a great fixture.

Rafa's teams are always tough always feel he is very underrated these days.
Great job with Newcastle with very limited players.

Prefer Mane over then for the start. But Eriksen isn’t a bad option.

Good points, but I suppose it is if you think that Eriksen can still get among the points with a Spurs second string around him for a few weeks?

If I was betting I would back against Spurs for value until the team settles down again.
                Also Spurs fixtures seem mixed.

toss up between Eriksen and Sane for myself

I'm only on Sane due to fixtures and better PPM record

Newcastle at home aren't an easy side to break down

Eriksen managed to get 2 assists against them last season. Newcastle didn't concede that many goals at home but they only kept 7 clean sheets in home games - as many as Southampton and less than Swansea + Huddersfield.

Ironically I posted the wrong statistic - they did keep 7 clean sheets at home but it was more than Southampton, Swansea, and the same as Huddersfield (I was looking at goals scored instead). Oops 😛

Kane won't miss more than one.

                    Newcastle is a tough game.

Not a bad option, but I do prefer the City options

Eriksen got 2 assists last season in GW 1 against Newcastle away.
Sure, it's not the easiest fixture but nobody in their right mind would start a Newcastle defender at home to Spurs.

True. Newcastle improved as the season wore on though. I wouldn't really want to start a Spurs attacker in that game tbh

Am I alone with this problem overrating mediocre players? I started draft with fwd line Tosun, Zaha, Arnie as I think there could be Value in all of them. Now I'm strugling to change one of them to an actually great player like Firmino, Auba, Kun etc. because of the Value I see in them. Not saying that I'm going to stay with that frontline, just looking for some peer support.. 😛

Well you could pick a 'value' team and keep cash in the bank for when you want to switch to the more popular picks.
It depends how much you trust your judgement one or two of them are surely going to be worth it?
Just go with your gut and don't be swayed by others if you think you prefer your choices.
There is nothing more annoying in fpl when you don't make the transfer you were thinking of and they score big.
