After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

He lasted about 5 days which is a good effort.

In all honesty, after watching United on Sunday and reading he actually wants to leave, it seems not worth it. Would only be for a couple of games but a load of other punty options at that price.

Am I alone with this problem overrating mediocre players? I started draft with fwd line Tosun, Zaha, Arnie as I think there could be Value in all of them. Now I'm strugling to change one of them to an actually great player like Firmino, Auba, Kun etc. because of the Value I see in them. Not saying that I'm going to stay with that frontline, just looking for some peer support.. 😛

Could be a great tactic. Kun/Kane not nailed and Auba’s first games are tough + new manager.

Well you could pick a 'value' team and keep cash in the bank for when you want to switch to the more popular picks.
It depends how much you trust your judgement one or two of them are surely going to be worth it?
Just go with your gut and don't be swayed by others if you think you prefer your choices.
There is nothing more annoying in fpl when you don't make the transfer you were thinking of and they score big.

Depends on many things such as price, injuries, position etc.

For example I've kept hold of 4.5 defenders for pretty much half a season even though it turned out they didn't play.

Defenders/GKs can stick in my team far too long even when they underperform... there is always a Mid/Fwd problem to sort out, which seems to take priority. Whether it should is a different questions

Depends on position. Defenders I plan for long term stability.

Attackers I try and catch early form, so there are usually 2/3 places in my team in constant transfer in/out...

Everton making a lot of changes is a damn good thing. It went so wrong last season. Could be a very strong year if they can get out of the gates - never recovered from awful opening fixtures and a terrible Europa run last year.

It is rare for a successful team to make so many changes IMO. They have a new RB (Coleman back from injury), a new LM (Richarlison), a new forward (Tosun), a new RM (Walcott) and a new manager all in the last 6 months. And they are still looking at more signings.

Even when he was on form early last year his finishing was awful. Could look at that as a positive that if he has improved there he could be great. Kind of Sterling-lite.

Its a risk but all 6.5mil players are, its an intriguing price point.

        Robertson - PvA - Mendy - Coleman - WanB
        Salah - Ramsey - Eriksen - Richarlison - Chalobah
        Auba - Tosun - Kamara

What would you do with the extra 0.5 ITB?
        A) Keep
        B) Get Alisson/Ederson as a set & forget - meaning that I won't be able to double up on Liverpool/City in attack
        C) Upgrade Chalobah to someone like Hughes so I have a stronger 1st sub
        D) Eriksen -> KdB and hope he starts GW 1
        E) Coleman -> Smalling. Mourinho seems to love him and Silva's sides aren't known for keeping clean sheets.

Agreed Cedric plays for Southampton who just avoided relegation.
Daniels is not likely to be an assured starter for Bournemouth. In particular if they go 3-4-3 he's old.
        Plus Bournemouth are poor defensively.

Who are the better 6.5 midfield options? Currently looking at Jota, Pedro (depending on what Sarri does), Deulofeu and Richarlison.

Will probably need to have a couple of 6.5 mids to make the most out of the 3-5-2 formation I'm thinking about playing.

That's true. Had very few players from promoted teams at the start of last season myself, and missed out on some points early on.

I really don't know what to expect from Fulham. Think they can do well, but at the same time it looks like they're short on players in a few positions. Getting Mitrović back would make a lot of difference.

There is zero chance Shaw cements a place imo, and I'm not sure he's worth it for a couple of weeks.

He was nutmegged by a San Jose Earthquakes player right in front of Mourinho. Young will be rushed back as soon as physically possible.

I'm not sure getting nutmegged means he won't play.

It might be because he's shite.

And so he should be. I know you all hate Young on here but he's far better than Shaw imo.

I would rather get nutmegged than take bird poop in the mouth. Either way both are crud. Worth a gamble for first and then transfer out for a plethora of other defenders in that price bracket.

Just a nuisance who constantly asks the most mundane questions. Either a 10 year old child or a man child who doesn't realise how much of a twerp he is. Apart from that seems a nice enough chap. By the way, A.

    Repost due to reply fail:

    Foster - Ryan

    F) Something else

      What about Ederson,
      Bavies, Sane in, then
      Foster, Mendy, Eriksen out

      ???

    A) Auba, Mahrez, Delufeo
    B) Aguero, Mhki, Martial

Do we think Mahrez will start the first 2-3 gw's?
