After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Mendy vs. Ederson is a dilemma. I would like to go Patricio Mendy if I knew Mendy was fit, but I have visions of him being a nightmare to own missing every other game. If he was definitely starting GW1 I’d get him no doubt but might go for the safe option with Ederson

After a lot of tinkering and discussions on here, that's the best team I managed to have with this front 3. Thoughts?

    Patricio
    Robertson Mendy Cedric
    Salah Dilva Jota Cairney
    Auba Kun Arnie

    Boruc Chalobah WanB Diop

I quite like it. I'd rather have Mahrez instead of Dilva but can't find the 0.5 and he can be downgraded to Pogba who I quit fancy when he comes back. By that time one of the striker will be probably gone anyway if one of them flops but I prefer to start the season with all 3 as I think Auba or Kun could really punish non owner

I don’t have a lot (any) facts to back this up. But I have a hunch they are going to do extremely well this year & punch well above their weight.

They look like a good well ran organised unit with quality and team spirit and a good manager. Very tempted to triple up on them.

It's got to the point now where they've signed one too many players, one too many 'star names' that may disrupt the squad QPR style.

Hopefully the transfers are well thought out and they can gel together. I can see them doing well, but I can also see it going horribly wrong for them.

I really hope not... have they signed others now as well as Moutinho & Patricio? I think both of those will actually be good signings though as they would join the little Portuguese enclave that Nuno seems to have built there so shouldn’t be bad for team spirit etc. You never know though the wheels could come off.

            I am optimistic though!

Outside of Moutinho and Patricio, Jota has been amazing for us and it’s good to see some FPL managers including him.

Douglas is another decent option. Took corners and free kicks last season but whether he will do the same now we added a few more players remains to be seen.

How would you rate Jota vs. Groß? Is he in & around that lebpvel, or a little below/above?

Im assuming he can make the step up but it’s a bit of guesswork without him having played any FPL games, but the OOP factor is very attractive

          Too true.

We’ve certainly got spirit by the bucket load.

After a horrible start with our new Chinese owners two seasons ago, they learnt a lot and started last season with what has turned out to be the best signing of all which is our manager Nuno. Very astute and intelligent guy if you watch some interviews.

Can never be sure how all of what has gone on will transfer into a PL season, but realistically we should be an outside chance of playing in Europe in 19/20.

Having said that, as a new PL team, just staying up would be nice.

Nice. Are you going with your two star men in Jota & Douglas? I’m thinking of those two plus maybe Patricio if Menday is Nailed for GW1. It’s a double up defensively, how foolhardy is that? Wolves were very defensively sound last year, right? And Nuno is a defensive manager first & foremost, similar to the way Mourinho always goes out not to concede rather than to score? Or is he actually more focused on carefree attacking & double defence is suicide?

    Which option sounds best, please?

Sane + Ward (4.5 Cardiff mid)
    or
Elyounoussi + Maddison (or any two middle of the road 6.5/7.0 punts)

NB: Ward would get a starting spot (otherwise Quaner, Wan Bissaka, McDonald).

Alternatively, Ward could be Dale Stephens.

If you have 14.0m for 2 starters I think you need to go down the 6.5/7.5 route...

You could do worse than Jota & Martial.

If it has to be a city player then maybe Dilva/Mahrez and... I actually can’t think of a worthwhile 5.5... drop down to Cairney/Ralls/Wiltshire/Neves/Costa etc?

      1. TheDonald

        Thanks for your feedback.

Got Mahrez and Aguero already. Was going for the Man City triple up, but even though it could work out, in the back of my mind I know it's probably reasonable to put all my eggs in the Man City basket and go for a 4.5 who might not play anyway.

That said, Sane is a pretty safe choice. I feel like whoever I go with in the 6.5/7.0 category is just a couple of punts anyway. Even Jota & Martial are pretty punty.

Ah right, what about Mendy or Ederson for the third city slot? Might diversify a little bit, as you would still have 3 city but would also pick up points for their cleansheets

I'll likely fill a 6.0 slot with Mendy if I don't go for Sane. Currently on Rüdiger, but VVD, Davies are also good options.

Over the course of the season, the 6.5/7.5 could well prove more fruitful, as there is alot of value there. The problem is we don't know who they are yet, as there are no guarantees at that bracket.

For me, it's safer starting with a more stable & premium player, and then down grading if you deem it necessary.

Of course. But to start the season, I'm wondering whether it's better to spread the risk by having more teams represented. I think Jota and Richardson are both equally likely to score well, but the fact that it would change my team to 1x Wolves 1x Everton rather than 2x Wolves is appealing to me.

hello all, what do we think of this?

        Ederson (Stekelenburg)
        Cedric Shlupp Daniels (Wan-Bissaka) (Douglas)
        Salah Keita Pedro D.Silva (Kenedy)
        Firmino Aguero Zaha

        Couple of worries i have:
Defence looks fairly week but its 5 starters just no big hitters
3 liverpool 'attackers' but i really fancy Keita to take the league by storm, almost criminal to leave Salah out, and no other striker around 8-10m that offers the value firmino does
Lack of Spurs and United but i expect their teams to start slow due to World Cup exploits

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That defence is criminally bad, Pedro won't start and Sarri doesn't like him, Willian, Mkhi and Siggy likely to be better options than Keita

It’s not definitely 5 starters. New left back at Bournemouth threatens Daniels’ position.

Am I the only one doubling up on Siggy & Richarlison? Siggy should be on all set pieces, will be much more suited to Silvas style while Richarlison's points tally under Silva was very impressive. Reckon they are two bargains, considering the attacking football Silva likes to play.

Either one is a punt in my view. I still think silva is yet to prove himself. Both is far too much imo

I have thought about pairing both but this is Everton we are talking about. There may be more potential in a more attacking team like arsenal or chelsea. Then again the adv of having both is you could drop one or the other at any given moment in time and I think you may not lose much anyway in GW1 as team selection a bit of a lottery elsewhere at present. Both guaranteed starters for GW1

          What’s wrong with my team??

          Foster, Patricio

          Mendy, Robertson, Tomkins, Cedric (wan-bisaka/4.0)

          Salah, Mahrez, Richarlison, Mikhi, Cairney

          Kun, Firmino, (Sørloth)

Should allow me one decent bench player every week and two palace cheapies who should be playing and w good fixtures. Not sure on whether Mikhi cash could be spent better on another mid or upgrade Sørloth to e.g Arnie/Zaha and downgrade Mikhi to Will Hughes fx?

The 3rd strikers 7 or under look every bit as good as the equivalent midfielders, if not better

I dont see a whole pile wrong with it. The defence and goalies not to my liking but difficult to solve considering the money spent on midfield and attack.

You have salah and robberson so I think no need for firmino then..

Firmino could become Arnie and either use cash on defence of 3rd striker...

Solely because he’s now under Silva again?

The 5m to 7m price bracket is somewhat lacking at present so any decent player at 6.5 will always get a mention. Richarlison was an option eben before he reunited with Silva. His competition is Pedro Milo Dacoure Mata and the like. All okay but Rich a match for any of them. Morw difficult I think to find value for money but sure a few none will suspect will set the early pace. Richarlison a decent shout of that lot
