Great Expectations

Mendy creativity could make him essential Man City defender

Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) has the potential to be the go-to Manchester City defensive option in 2018/19 after his comeback from long-term injury.

The Frenchman was ruled out for most of last season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in Gameweek 6, but is fit and ready to go for the new campaign, at a cheaper price than colleagues Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Kyle Walker (£6.5m).

We’ve gone over the data to find out whether Fantasy Premier League managers can expect to see the Mendy who registered eight assists in 25 league matches and seven Champions League appearances prior to signing for Man City.

CREATIVE GENIUS

Mendy’s start to the 2017/18 demonstrated his huge creative potential. In the first five Gameweeks of last season, before his Gameweek 6 injury, only Premier League four defenders created more chances than the Frenchman, all of them with more starts under their belt in that period. The Frenchman fashioned seven opportunities in 270 minutes, Jose Holebas (£4.5m) eight in 360, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) nine in 369, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m) nine in 269 and Ben Davies (£6.0m) 13 in 350.

In fact, only three Man City players created more than Mendy, David Silva (£8.5m) with 17 chances in five starts, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) with 15 in five and Sergio Aguero (£11.0) with 12 in four. And despite making just seven appearances in the entire campaign, just De Bruyne and Leroy Sané (£9.5m) registered more successful crosses from open play than Mendy’s eight, with 14 and nine respectively.

Adding a further three appearances after a Gameweek 34 return, Mendy created nine chances and had five shots on goal in 361 minutes across the season as a whole. That averaged out at a key pass every 40.1 minutes, the next best in the City defence was Walker with one every 92.9. Furthermore, his shot every 72.2 minutes was the second-best in the City defence, with Danilo’s (£5.5m) 70.6 coming out on top.

DEFENSIVE RETURNS

On top of Mendy’s impressive creative potential is his ability to keep a healthy number of clean sheets. No side conceded fewer goals than Man City’s 27 last season and only Manchester United recorded more clean sheets, their total of 19 just one better than the Citizens’ 18.

Pep Guardiola’s champions sit top of our season ticker for defence in the opening six Gameweeks so shutouts should be expected. After a tricky trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 1, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Fulham are all set to visit the Etihad Stadium with trips to Wolves and Cardiff in Gameweeks 3 and 6 respectively.

ON THE MENDY

Mendy will be ahead in his pre-season development compared to everybody else. Even though he only registered 40 minutes in Russia, the training he did there with France was effectively his pre-season and because he missed so much time with the injury, his body and mind should be in a position to head back to training with his club and then competitive action without feeling burned out.

ROTATION FREE (FOR NOW)

Mendy was brought to Man City last season to be the first-choice left-back and the Frenchman looks set to make that position his own, especially in the early weeks of 2018/19. The late returns to training of Danilo and Fabian Delph (£5.5m) means that the only cover for the left of defence will be Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), who may not be at the club anymore by Gameweek 1 with transfer reports linking him elsewhere. Those factors should ensure very little rotation on Mendy’s part to begin with, as he is already with the main training group in the USA.

Are you sure about that ? Seems like Alonso matches exactly the same to Ghoulam in terms of his attributes.

        https://www.whoscored.com/Players/82062/Show/Faouzi-Ghoulam

At Napoli Sarri played a system where the right back stayed back and tucks into a back three enabling Ghoulam to push up. Alonso might not end up in the opponents box as often but he could still have a very attacking role.

At PSG the backs were super attacking. But with Mbappe and Neymar sometimes the space wasn't available. But if Özil plays as a winger Bellerin have all the space. And the key factor with the tactic of Emery is attacking backs. Dani Alves 7 assists in 2063 minutes. Meunier 4 goals and 4 assists in 1573 minutes.

Strong side. Too much on the bench perhaps. Surely you'd want to play Arnie. Schlupp and Cedric could play most weeks too. Also looks like a few early transfers with Shaw and Lamela not nailed in full strength sides.

Because most people who pick a team don't try to be as clever as everyone on here. He jumps out as a player who will over perform vs his price and he was in my initial team just like he will be in most people's teams in my work league.
Then we overthink it - bad opening fixtures, may not start, £6.5m has more options available...
We all drop him and blame 'the casuals' when he gets a goal and 2 assists vs City and everyone laughs at us for getting a player 'no ones ever heard of' from a promoted team instead.

Shaw is a transfer waiting to happen and you don't want to be wasting them at the start of the season.
Burnley have a nice opening run of fixtures so you set and forget up until your first wildcard.

I definitely tend to plot out a strategy in blocks. Be it int breaks to reassess and use accumulated FTs or a WC or blocks of fixtures before swapping big hitters to those with a great run of home games to try maximise returns for investment.

Obviously this doesn't always work because you get bandwagons/injuries/under performing players or teams.

Here goes. Feels like I'm struggling a bit with balance and getting enough firepower up on top. Concerned about Jesus/Agüero long-term rotation risk and Arsenal's set up/fixt, but feels risky to not have Aub. A bit of gambling on Everton's start, thinking to upgrade either Wally or Lamela with Mikh in GW3 depending on which do best/nailed for the foreseeable future. Also, Arnie's move to front and harder fixtures makes me go with Zaha as of now.

Any opinions on this draft? Cheers.

    Ederson - Begovic
    Azpi - Baines - Mendy - Daniels - Wan-B
    Salah - Walcott - Mahrez - Lamela - Stephens
    Bobby - Tosun - Zaha

Final 15 games of the PL season:

    Robertson - 4 shots, 15 key passes, 29 clearances

Van Dijk - 18 shots, 5 key passes, 83 clearances.

Is there a case for VVD over Robbo? Almost no chance of VVD being rested/rotated. Probably a bigger goal threat and more likely to get baps through his defensive work and passing numbers. Robertson is more creative and far more likely to assist however. I think it's closer between them than the RMTs on here suggest.

Robertson played less minutes and got more bonus points last year.
Van Dijk does seem to have been very unlucky to only get 3 ppg.
22 attempts in the box and no goals seems a bit unlucky as well.

Those bonus come from his attacking returns though. Kind of what I'm saying is VVD's score could/should have been boosted by a couple of goals. The fact he got 0g0a looks like it might be an anomaly

There'll probably be nothing much between them throughout the season, which is why I'm taking both with Salah.

I find it confusing how people see value in Firmino at 9.5 when there are 2 other Pool players at the back for 6.0 who will likely score around the same as him (5 ppg) this year.

Too expensive when you can only captain 1 of them, imo

What is the point in getting Mendy in gw 1 v Arsenal?
There is likely to be goals in the game and it will be just two points the most likely points.
Much prefer a man united defender bailly or Liverpool defenders Robertson and VVD.

Well for one because the season isn't one game week long.

The point is not to mess up your team because of 1 bad fixture in the first GW.

Exactly, it's not like you need to worry about subsequent gameweeks when picking team.

Lots of Lamela in teams - surely in direct competition with Moura, then Son once returned?

I think most people who have him know he's a short term pick.

Hard to tell which, or both, will get the nod this season ... both about equal in pre-season scoring too

He seemed to be clearly ahead of Moura at the end of last season.

Big fan of Mendy. First on my imaginary teamsheet for this year when last season finished.

How much do we think is too much to leave on the bench/ITB if we have:

    1) 11 nailed starters with an assortment of hard and easy fixtures over the next 3 weeks.

    2) 9 nailed starters and 2 who are unsure on starts

If I think the 11 players in my starting line up will do well I couldn't care less how much money is on the bench.

For example I will probably bench Robertson and Van Dijk when they play City.

I think you need 2 players that cost 5.0 or more on the bench unless you somehow have a team with no rotation risk. I personally cant make a good team that has no rotation risks. Theres simply too many new managers, new players, world cup player uncertainty. Top it off with City being a minefield and a bench seems necessary.

Is their any obvious changes you’d make to this team ?

    Ederson
    Davies Robertson Shaw Coleman
    Pedro Salah Richarlison
    Aubameyang Arnie Aguero

Subs: Boruc, Wan B, Cairney, Gunnarsson

Good defence but rotation a big problem after first few GWs. Pedro a risk

Thoughts on this 3-5-2? Kinda starting to like it alot. Would really fit in all three of Kun, Auba and Salah but guess it's not worth since you only can use one captain

    Ederson
    VVD Robbo Bailly
    Pedro Mkhi Salah Mahrez Jota
    Zaha Aguero/Auba

    4.0, Cedric, Wan bissaka, Kamara

    1) Mane and 4.5 bench fodder forward (play 3-5-2)
    2) Firmino and 4.5 bench fodder mid (play 3-4-3)
