Great Expectations

Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) has the potential to be the go-to Manchester City defensive option in 2018/19 after his comeback from long-term injury.

The Frenchman was ruled out for most of last season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in Gameweek 6, but is fit and ready to go for the new campaign, at a cheaper price than colleagues Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Kyle Walker (£6.5m).

We’ve gone over the data to find out whether Fantasy Premier League managers can expect to see the Mendy who registered eight assists in 25 league matches and seven Champions League appearances prior to signing for Man City.

CREATIVE GENIUS

Mendy’s start to the 2017/18 demonstrated his huge creative potential. In the first five Gameweeks of last season, before his Gameweek 6 injury, only Premier League four defenders created more chances than the Frenchman, all of them with more starts under their belt in that period. The Frenchman fashioned seven opportunities in 270 minutes, Jose Holebas (£4.5m) eight in 360, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) nine in 369, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m) nine in 269 and Ben Davies (£6.0m) 13 in 350.

In fact, only three Man City players created more than Mendy, David Silva (£8.5m) with 17 chances in five starts, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) with 15 in five and Sergio Aguero (£11.0) with 12 in four. And despite making just seven appearances in the entire campaign, just De Bruyne and Leroy Sané (£9.5m) registered more successful crosses from open play than Mendy’s eight, with 14 and nine respectively.

Adding a further three appearances after a Gameweek 34 return, Mendy created nine chances and had five shots on goal in 361 minutes across the season as a whole. That averaged out at a key pass every 40.1 minutes, the next best in the City defence was Walker with one every 92.9. Furthermore, his shot every 72.2 minutes was the second-best in the City defence, with Danilo’s (£5.5m) 70.6 coming out on top.

DEFENSIVE RETURNS

On top of Mendy’s impressive creative potential is his ability to keep a healthy number of clean sheets. No side conceded fewer goals than Man City’s 27 last season and only Manchester United recorded more clean sheets, their total of 19 just one better than the Citizens’ 18.

Pep Guardiola’s champions sit top of our season ticker for defence in the opening six Gameweeks so shutouts should be expected. After a tricky trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 1, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Fulham are all set to visit the Etihad Stadium with trips to Wolves and Cardiff in Gameweeks 3 and 6 respectively.

ON THE MENDY

Mendy will be ahead in his pre-season development compared to everybody else. Even though he only registered 40 minutes in Russia, the training he did there with France was effectively his pre-season and because he missed so much time with the injury, his body and mind should be in a position to head back to training with his club and then competitive action without feeling burned out.

ROTATION FREE (FOR NOW)

Mendy was brought to Man City last season to be the first-choice left-back and the Frenchman looks set to make that position his own, especially in the early weeks of 2018/19. The late returns to training of Danilo and Fabian Delph (£5.5m) means that the only cover for the left of defence will be Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), who may not be at the club anymore by Gameweek 1 with transfer reports linking him elsewhere. Those factors should ensure very little rotation on Mendy’s part to begin with, as he is already with the main training group in the USA.

    RMT would be awesome.

    Schmeichel / Button
Mendy / Robbertson / Cedric / Wan Bis / Pielter
    Salah / Mahrez / Jota / Richarlison / Stephens
    Auba / Firmino / Wood

Any feedback is great I know defence is a bit weak but can't see how I can easily improve it without downgrading one of the attackers?

I generally like the team structure, but:

Would avoid Erikson over the first few weeks with all of Spurs' main players recovering from the WC.

Keep an eye on the forward situation at West Ham too; I'm sure I heard about them looking at strikers!

Not sure about Richarlison at Everton; lost his touch at Watford second half of the season (admittedly when Silva left) and won't be the main man at Everton.

Cedric I'd swap as, I wouldn't want a Hughes defender personally especially when your two bench options for the defenders are be no means assured starts.

I have a set of players which i love and dont want to dismiss, but i dont have enough budget so
    - Mikhi, Eriksen, Salah, Kdb, Agüero

    A) cut salah
    B) cut eriksen
    C) have a cheap defense

      Different at last.
Doubts about Daniels, and I prefer Holebas to KF. Schlupp could be oop.
I'd go with Fab as fire & forget and use the 0.5 to beef Jota to 7.0.
      Poss Townsend instead of Jota

    Hi All,

Could I get your advice please? I'm slowly settling on a team 🙂

    Foster,

    Coleman, Van Dijk, Tomkins, Mendy

    Salah, Marhez, Richarlison

    Aubameyang, Firmino, Arnautovic

    BENCH: Fabianski, Gunnarsson, Romeu, Wan-Bissaka

    What do you think?

Van Dijk is the one I'd be concerned about but he could be a nice differential maybe?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Is anyone considering Burnely defs?

I know people like attacking threat for any def over 4.5 but with those opening fixtures I'm confident of 5/6 clean sheets so one of those with Mendy and Robbo seems a pretty solid back 3.

Yep, Lowton assist potential. They were trolls in second half of last year though conceeding a single goal so often.

I fancy Ward so there's less chance of fatigue from the extra EL games but Lowton is worth considering too. With those early fixtures and the players being well rested I can see a return to them keeping it solid.

Lowton is going under the radar. Burnley are CS monsters in the first half of the season. I'm seriously considering switching Coleman or PVA to Lowton.

I'm pretty certain I'll be going with:

        Patricio (4m)
Mendy, Robbo, Burnley def, (WB, 4.5m)

Considering Yedlin to rotate with WB as first def sub.

My defence atm, not quite sold on Shaw, any better alternatives for 5m?

    Mendy - VVD - Sakho - Shaw - Wan B

As I said above, not sure why Burnely are totally ignored at that range. Consider one of them at 5m for solid clean sheet returns early on?

That's a fair point - and the only negative I can see in investment but surely a centre back can handle 2 games in a week? It's not like they play free flowing football either so the solidity of their midfield helps share the defensive load.

I'm not entirely sure who's likely to start at cb for them just now but the EL qualifiers against Aberdeen should clear it up. I'd assumed Mee and Ward.

ENT interested in people's opinions. Do you think I have gone to heavy in defence? I like to go more defensive early and see what happens. Especially with a lot of key players being out, perhaps suggests less goals being scored? ... anyway tried to get some balance. Will get De bruyne in when back instead of Sanchez.

    Pickford--- Stecklemberg
Van Dijk --- Mendy--- Bellerin --- Coleman --- Tarkowski
Son --- Sanchez---- Townsend--- delefeou --- neves
    Arno ---- Firmino--- Abu/ aguero (can't decide)

I think Coleman and Tarkowski are a step too far, and while I think Bellerin will do well and will start, might be best to avoid for the first two weeks until it's clear he is starting.

Will definitely be some transfer that will effect team choice. But fairly happy at the moment. Richarlsons transfer offers a cheaper option to siggy with their fixtures. Gray I feel might be time for him to step up now Mahrez has gone. Kamara is just bench fodder that I hope will start.

So what's with the whole Gayle instead of Mitrovic story? Are Newcastle all of a sudden changing their minds and planning to play Mitrovic? Because he was dead last in the pecking order last season.

It's nonsense. Fulham have zero interest in Gayle

Oh sure, I meant more from the perspective of Newcastle and Mitrovic. Is Rafa actually including him in his plans or are they playing hardball?

Newcastle have no interest in keeping Mitro. They are delaying to try and get interest from a non-PL team

Fair enough, thanks. Well, fingers crossed for your team (and for my FPL team as he's firmly in my plans if he signs!).

With the emergence of wan-Bissaka potentially nailing down the RB slot at CP and with 4m price. What impact, if any, does it have on the appeal of PVA?

I was set on having PVA but feel now perhaps to look at alternatives or downgrade to a 5m to give me extra cash to spend else where

I think if WB nails down that spot it will be hard for any of the other palace defs to prove better value

Doesn't matter what team he plays for if he costs 4m and starts regularly. Personally starting with Sakho and him and will see what happens.

WB is the only Palace defender to get, if he nails down that spot.

I have both PvA and AWB.

PvA expensive in comparison to Sakho/Tomkins/AWB but at that price range (5.5) who else would you rather have with as much attacking threat as PvA and decent opening fixtures? Often compared with Coleman, who has FPL history but with his return from injury and Silva as manager, are people expecting too much from Coleman?

I also have the added incentive/bias of being a CPFC season ticket holder so it's even more of a delight when I witness an FPL asset I own score in the flesh!

    Thoughts please-

    Begovic
    Robertson Mendy Coleman Bailly
    Siggy Mane Mahrez Martial
    Aguero Firmino

    Boruc Cedric Gunnarsson Kamara
    1m itb

Is Auba and Sane better than Mane and Aguero?

    Thanks!

True, if spending 5.5 on keeper downgrade other to branch fodder imo

I'm not in the business of having a non playing keeper.

But you have Ederson who will play every game...

In theory he will obviously, but I like to have options and don't like to have non playing bench fodder on the bench.

He looks fairly nailed to start the season in a man utd defence for 5.0m, what's not to love?

    Best Mancunian defence combo?

DDG & Mendy? Or is the 1.0 savings from Ederson & Bailly too good to pass up?

Depends what you do with the extra mil. Imo Ederson and Bailey/Shaw with the change is better

    Aguero or Abu?

Both should start in my opinion. Aguero proven quality Abu not so much in the prem but seems to be bagging pre season. Both on pens? Not sure but I'm finding it very difficult to separate the two.

Ahhh Auba. Not 100% on pens if Laca is on the pitch, wouldn't be surprised to see them share them. Auba will outscore Aguero imho.

      both to begin with.

If either aren't firing its far easier to downgrade and then it is to try and get them if they are performing
