Joshua King (£6.5m) scored his first goal of pre-season on Friday ahead of a campaign that could see him return to his best.

He was a revelation in 2016/17 when, classified as a midfielder, he registered 16 goals, three assists and 178 points while operating as Bournemouth’s centre-forward.

His follow up to that was disappointing by comparison. Shifted to a forward on Fantasy Premier League, the Norwegian international scored half-as many goals, provided three assists and amassed a total score of just 110 points.

However, some underlying data from the second-half of the season suggest an improvement in his fortunes in 2018/19.

CHERRY ON TOP

We may have recently revealed the goal threat of Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) and the injured Junior Stanislas (£6.0m), but it does appear that King was unlucky not to score more often in 2017/18. No Bournemouth player registered more touches in the box than King (140) and none of his team-mates had more shots there either (1.2 per game). His 21 shots on target was also a club-high, while only Fraser (16.7) had a better goal conversion rate than him (15.7). Furthermore, King scored more big chances than anyone else at the club (six), even though Callum Wilson (£6.0m) was presented with more of them. Last time around King was still the joint-top scorer with eight goals, but he could easily improve on that in the upcoming season.

CREATIVE STREAK

While the cheaper Wilson matched King’s goal tally in 2017/18, where the Norwegian has the advantage over his colleague was creativity, which could well justify spending an extra £0.5m on him this season. King created 38 chances last term, which ranked second among the Cherries, behind only Fraser and, crucially, double that of Wilson. It is no surprise then that King registered twice as many assists as his English colleague, with just Andrew Surman (£5.0m) and Jordon Ibe (£5.5m) putting up more.

END OF SEASON FORM

King did not start 2017/18 particularly well but was one of the many players who performed much bette in the second-half of the campaign. Between Gameweek 1 and 19, King was involved in just 23 percent of Bournemouth’s goals. From Gameweek 20 until the end of the season, he was involved 50 percent of the time. Considering the Cherries’ appealing early fixtures, especially at home, King could establish himself as an important figure in the opening 10 fixtures. A trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 looks the hardest, although the Cherries were still 3-0 winners there last time, while Cardiff, Everton, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Southampton will all visit the Vitality Stadium in the early months.

SELECTION ADVANTAGE

King could start the 2018/19 campaign as the first-choice centre-forward at Bournemouth, although it’s early days yet. So far, King has been involved in all three of the Cherries’ pre-season matches, featuring from the beginning on two occasions. Meanwhile Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) has two starts, three appearances and a goal too, but Wilson has featured just once. Furthermore, King racked up more starts that any other Bournemouth forward in 2017/18 (27).

King is definitely an option with those fixtures

But there are so many options in that price bracket suppose this also makes it easy to change if one does flop

The teams I’m building consistently leave me with 1.0. As of now, there are a large number of WC players who seem like they will miss GW1. I’m trying to maximize the number of nailed players in my squad so as to avoid the early WC. As a result, it seems like I always have MITB. I don’t expect that these WC players will come back en masse fit and firing. Some will. So I think I’ll be able to filter them into my squad slowly as they come back and show form. I hope that will allow me to avoid the early WC. Of course, this plan could get shredded.

With Robertson and Mendy in my team, probably wise to have a solid, nailed 4.5 def option on the bench (not Palace).

Sol Bamba of Cardiff a decent differential option? Good player, defensive team, grabs the odd goal and possible bonus points if Cardiff park the bus?

Dont think he is good enough to make the jump back up to premier league, however, could be a decent pick if like you said they just park the bus which i would imagine they will

They also played him infront of the back 4 on occasion last season

However, regardless of parking the bus, i seriously struggle to see cardiff keeping many clean sheets, woeful team

Thanks - maybe better off going for solid, proven options like Duffy/Dunk then.

Avoiding Cedric unless he is ready for gw1. And Tomkins not an option as I also have Sakho and Wan-Bissaka.

Im in the same boat as you, on cedric currently but looking to offload to a different 4.5, and also already have Wan Bissaka

Currently tinkering between jagielka and dunk, dunk has security of starts and goal threat, jagielka has the fixtures, ideal world will be cedric confirmed to play Gw1

Not to be swayed by a single (previous) article and I have been an advocate of Wolves players as bargain of the season material... But! I am very tempted to set Robertson and Van Dijk as a defensive Liverpool double-up and leave it. Starting with Salah so that’s my three places, while assuming attacking value can be found elsewhere (other than Firmino).

This means no gamble on Jota yet which is a shame but it’s safer to monitor Wolves. Ederson could become Patricio around GW10, similarly Cedric could become Boly, Doherty or Castro if they are defending well, and finally Richarlison to Jota.

    Ederson (Hamer)
    VVD Robbo PVA Cedric (WB)
    Salah(c) Richarlison Mahrez Cairney (Ward)
    Aubameyang Aguero (Kamara)

Is anyone else using double Liverpool to begin with and does anyone have any particular pros/cons sentiments? (Besides what was written above!)

      • 10 Years

Liverpool play attacking football and are nowhere near as good at the back without the Van Dijk-Lovren tandem.

I’d want Liverpool attackers and the beauty is Salah, Mane and Firmino will always play when fully fit.

      1. Il Papera
        • 9 Years

Yeah I do totally agree their attacking threat is immense, though I’m assuming Lovren will be back before long. 7 out 14 CS when VVD played and both have an attacking threat, which is my idea behind the 6.0 price being incredible value while I’m hoping to find a relatively cheap attacking midfield to supplement Aubu and Aguero. Cheers 🙂

    Thoughts?

    Fabianski (Hamer)

    Robertson Bailly Cedric (Peltier Wan-Bisaka)

    Salah Sane Jota Richarlison (Cairney)

    Aubameyang Firmino King

Strong team. I think Fabianski might find it tough going in the opening run aside from save points potential, Patricio might be an option there to begin with as I think Wolves will be either a) quite solid or b) have the same saves potential.

Cheers. Given I've got a Cardiff player, a Wolves player and a Fulham player, I'm reluctant to get another Wolves player as I don't want to bank on the newly promoted teams too much. If he does well, I may make the switch.

Yeah that’s my thoughts too. Too much uncertainty and was big on Wolves but when looking at my team I realised how many punts there were compared to sure fire point animals (to coin a term!)

Hoedt is the best defender fpl-wise from Southampton.

What’s going on with Monreal? Not in the squad today. Read that he could return to Spain as his contract expires at the end of the season. If he left Kolasinac would be gold dust at £5m!

But he had a child, no? Is he coming back for the tour?

If they do sign a winger though I’ll go right of him. Good place holder for Mkhi gw3 if he only plays first two.

I think you need to set and forget one of those keepers. Rotating is very hard to get right.

None of your three big hitter defenders are nailed.

I don't think Neves is a good FPL pick.

Downgrade Davies and Laporte to defenders who are more nailed and work from there. Maybe upgrade Neves or Kamara.
