Virgil van Dijk’s first full season in a Liverpool shirt has much potential from a Fantasy perspective.

The club-record £75m signing from Southampton made an instant impact on Merseyside, helping the Liverpool defence to seven clean sheets in his 14 league appearances for the Reds.

Priced at £6.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season, van Dijk and left-back Andrew Robertson are the joint-most expensive defensive assets in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Liverpool welcome West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Southampton to Anfield in the first six Gameweeks and their defenders are proving to be popular FPL purchases: all five members of the perceived first-choice backline, including Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m), Dejan Lovren (£5.0m) and goalkeeper Alisson (£5.5m), have double-digit ownership.

The past two seasons have been something of a frustration, both for van Dijk personally and for his mostly untapped Fantasy potential.

Van Dijk’s debut Premier League campaign in 2015/16 still represents his personal FPL benchmark, with the-then Southampton centre-half registering three goals, ten clean sheets, 16 bonus points and 130 FPL points overall as the Saints finished sixth under Ronald Koeman.

A serious ankle injury suffered in January 2017 cut short his sophomore season with the Saints before a transfer window tussle for his services between Southampton and Liverpool hampered his pre-season preparations for the campaign just gone. Having handed in a transfer request in August of last year, van Dijk was to start just 11 league matches for the Saints before further speculation led to his omission from Mauricio Pellegrino’s team in mid-December.

The move to Anfield has firmly placed van Dijk back onto the FPL radar, though, and the Dutch international’s form in the final four months of 2017/18 hints at greater things to come: no Premier League defender kept more clean sheets than van Dijk (seven) after his Liverpool debut in Gameweek 24.

Van Dijk’s Initial Impact at Liverpool

Despite an inglorious first league appearance in a Liverpool shirt (a 1-0 away defeat to Swansea City), van Dijk’s positive effect on the Reds’ backline was palpable.

Before the Dutchman’s arrival, Liverpool had conceded goals at a rate of 1.21 per match (the sixth-best average in the league) and allowed a mean of 1.56 big chances per fixture (seventh-best). Six other Premier League sides had registered more clean sheets than Liverpool (nine) prior to van Dijk’s capture, meanwhile.

From Gameweeks 24 to 38, the Reds conceded an average of 0.66 goals per fixture (the joint-best mean in the top flight) and only allowed their opposition an average of 1.2 big chances (joint-second best) per match. The Reds’ total of eight clean sheets – only one of which van Dijk wasn’t present for – over this period was also a division-high.

Liverpool’s defence in general improved in 2017/18 and their record at Anfield was notably impressive, with only ten goals conceded and 12 clean sheets registered (out of a total of 17) across the whole of the season.

Goal Threat

Van Dijk is surely due a goal or two this season. In 2017/18, the only defender to have more attempts on goal than the Dutch centre-back (27) without scoring was Brighton’s Shane Duffy. Twenty of van Dijk’s efforts were from set plays, highlighting his particular strength at dead-ball situations.

Van Dijk’s minutes-per-chance mean of 83.4 was also the best in the Premier League among centre-backs with more than 20 league appearances to their name.

From van Dijk’s Liverpool debut onwards, the only centre-half to have more efforts on goal (16) than the former Celtic defender was Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.

The Netherlands international was on target in the 3-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund this week and intriguingly took a direct free-kick in the 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Alisson’s Arrival

The acquisition of Brazil number one Alisson from Roma surely adds to van Dijk’s clean sheet potential. The world’s most expensive goalkeeper had a better save percentage (79.3%) last season than all other Premier League goalkeepers bar David de Gea; Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet’s save percentages, by contrast, were down at 68.9% and 61.0% respectively.

De Gea and Nick Pope were the only Premier League goalkeepers with a better “expected goals (xG) prevented” total than Alisson, who saved a net total of eight shots that he was expected to concede.

De Gea was also the only goalkeeper in the English top flight who bettered Alisson’s clean sheet total of 18 for Roma.

A Lack of Rotation Threat

For Liverpool to make a serious tilt at the Premier League title this season, then the only top-class centre-back on their books is surely a must-start in the vast majority of their domestic matches.

From Gameweek 26 until the end of the 2017/18 season, van Dijk started every single one of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures. This unbroken sequence of appearances came in spite of the Reds’ progress to the final of the UEFA Champions League and Klopp’s predilection for rotating other key members of his side, including Robertson and Alexander-Arnold (both of whom failed to start three of those 13 matches).

That van Dijk – unlike Alexander-Arnold and Lovren – has had the summer off from international duty also bodes well for his chances of a sustained run in the first team right from Gameweek 1.

      Easy cleanies?

      West Ham will probably score.

Leicester always seem to score against Pool. Same goes for Palace.

Only cs I see in their first 4 is against Brighton 🙂

Don't remember any attacking points but did ok considering settling down, new team mates etc.
With the addition of Allison too maybe there is reason now to show some faith in their ability to keep teams out. No doubt I'll be stuck in the past and still have that voice saying "but it's a Liverpool defender..."

I am not convinced that Liverpool’s style of play suits his chances of attacking return. How often do Liverpool put balls directly into the box from set pieces?

I've also went for him last year and it was bit frustrating seeing him getting close to scoring but actually never managing to get it over the line, whilst those who went for cheaper Robertson were reaping rewards.

I dont have any stats to back it up but isnt set piece delievry rather poor at Liverpool ?

    Ben Davies vs VVD.
    Who will you choose?

BDavies have some rotation issue right? But the minutes he got last season is quite good. Maybe because Rose's injury.

        VVD - 0 goals, 0 assist

        BDavies looks better right?

Your though is apreciated btw. Maybe if I want to have BDavies over VVD, I must have a stronger bench or it will kill me the another way around. Hehe

There is no doubt Davies is a great fantasy option but his rotation is a real killer and with Rose now being fit for the start of the season it is just going to get worse.

VVD for sure. No rotation. Pool should be stronger at the beginning. Spurs had 10 starting 11 players at wc. Most of them played until the end.

The reality is VVD have poor end product. 0 goals, 0 assist.

I have read great expectation about VVD one or two seasons before when he in Saint's shirt .Still cant deliver any goals.

Maybe only have 1 or 2 if he is lucky enough this season.

Decided not to go Salah-less. It's the captaincy that worries me, so if you are never going to captain either Mane or Bobby F i see no point having them.

How would you work Salah in to this front eight? My defence is locked so the only funds available there are binning Cedric and going with two 4.0's on the bench!

    Mane Sane Eriksen Neves/Jorghino Stephens
    Auba Firmino Tosun

    Firmino>Arnie frees up 2.5m still 1.0m short!

Decided last night that will go with Salah and will captain him first few weeks. Beacasue of that I've made executive decision of downgrading

I got two 6ml defenders and Mahrez in midfield so raising funds wont be an issue, also Lacazette might turn out be a good option on his own.
Truth be told its all guessing game at this point thats why I will bet on Salah to start with and deal with any other issues later should such arise.

Just personal opinion but I think I would prefer a 5.5 and 4.0 in the gk spots.
I don't fancy many cleans for Bournemouth so don't like Daniels as a pick. Actually feel the same about most of the defence tbh.
Obviously you prefer sterling and Sanchez over Kun and Abu but I don't love them. If you switched sterling to KDB then it would look very similar to a team I would make if I was told to make one for the season and I could not make any transfers

Towards the end of the season (and when City had basically won it anyway) he was playing Smalling, Jones and Lindelof so they would get ready for the World Cup. Especially Smalling who was fighting for a place in England's defence. As Ivory Coast didn't qualify he didn't play Bailly. I fully expect Bailly to be first choice CB this season.

I don´t really rate Maguire but him at United would be quite a good fpl option.
He will get loads of cs and he will probably score 4-5 goals this season.

Truth be told he isn’t a top defender. If United do pay the kind of money being reported I will be laughing my leg off until the end of the season

Exactly this. He'll be a goal threat, but with a pacey Bailly next to him and boring Jose tactics he'll pick up points. Baps too. His distribution is good and he brings the ball out well

He’s nowhere near as slow as people assume (due to his build). Also his positioning is excellent.

Has anyone ever seen him get skimmed? By anyone? Even Salah?

Robertson and Tosun, simply because of his fixtures. Arnie is the best player out of those three but I find Everton's fixtures too good to ignore.

It's not all about the fixtures. We have no idea what impact Silva will have on Everton, how quick they'll start, and whether Tosun will be any good in that system. Arnie proved himself at the end of last season, has done well pre season and does seem to be fixture proof

      VVD for guaranteed game time.
Zaha if at palace, Tosun if not. Arnie could surprise us against the big teams but very tough fixtures and a lot of new faces in the WHU team.

With Patricio you should try and get another 4.5 keeper for rotation. They have City GW3. Also need 1/2 City attackers - Eriksen to Sane/Mahrez IMO.

        • 7 Years

Cheers for the feed back, however I think sticking with one 4.5 keeper is the way to go as saves that all 0.5, Patricio may change to another one but I'm sure there will be plenty of save points there. As for a city mid, yes I agree, though you can't knock Eriksen for his points tally. Shaw is deffo just a fill in and a see.

An idea for constructive RMT discussion :

    - Post your current draft on this thread.
    - Responders are to list only the players you've included that they would NOT consider as options to start the season with - feel free to add the reason you've ruled each player out if you want.

Hopefully a useful exercise homing in on the 'problem' areas of each our teams without wasting focus on the Kun v Auba debates!

Fabianski - save the .5 and downgrade to a 4.0

Davies - would rather own a United defender for that price. Spurs slow starters and depleted team to start season.

Kenedy - ineligible to play against Chelsea in GW3. Poor fixtures.

JKing - prefer Chris Wood in that price range. Bournemouth haven’t made any standout signings. Think they will be battling relegation.

Davies as spurs decimated by World Cup, then when they are undecimated he is a lottery to start each week.

Kun as he is also a lottery to start. You are always sweating over pep’s teamsheet hoping he starts. Then if he does start you are behind the sofa waiting for him to get injured, then if he doesn’t get injured you are behind the sofa waiting for Pep to sub him early, then if all that hasn’t happened you are still behind the sofa waiting for him to score twice.

Both keepers. I just prefer the 4.0 + 5.5 option this year. Benching keeper points has shortened my life enough already 🙂

Bavies - as mentioned by others, Spurs could struggle at the start. They are yet to strengthen and nearly all have had world cup. Also didn't like seeing Davies being tried as a CB in the last match. While I think he could be great this season, I can't help but feel there are spool many better options at that price and even under it.

Im not super keen on Erik either for the reasons already outlined. He'll probably tick away as per usual though. He'd be in my set and forget season team but feel like you won't miss too much leaving him out for the first few week's.

Kennedy - hoping it's a breakout season for him but I will be waiting till the fixtures settle and Newcastle have a few games under their belt. Although for 5.0 it probably fine to start with him

Don't like king but don't know why. Would much rather spend that 6.5 on a mid and have a blank 4.5 in the forwards.

If you feel like backing spurs early doors I would look at taking a punt on Moura or Lamela. Could also punt on Walker-Peters but would need to be happy that that 4.5 could just sit on the bench. I would personally downgrade Erik to around a 7.0 and upgrade king 9.0/9.5. Bavies down to a 5.5 and keepers to 4.0 & 5.5.

Pickford - Everton defensively are a shambles. Marco Silva won’t help this aspect of their play, unless they make some good signings like Mina.

Mendy - not convinced at all. Sat on the bench for France all tournament and only got some token minutes at the end of last season for Pep. Don’t know if he’s fit enough to play a run of games.

Daniels - Bournemouth’s defence is shocking.

Might change Pickford to Allison (waiting to see what happens with Pickford to Chelsea - if he goes to chelsea then at 5m he's a bargain I think)

Who do you think will play at LB for Mendy (If they do sign a LB I may consider getting rid, but before his injury he was quality)

Daniels - I agree I had Lovren but changed it, need to find a defender at 4.5/5m suggestions?

Ederson - I can see the appeal (only nailed Man C defender). But I just think there’s so much value in the 4.5s.

VVD - with how Liverpool play, I wouldn’t be comfortable with just 1 Pool attacker.

Shaw/Holgate - look OK for now but just keep a close eye on pre-season/any new signings

Neves - think it’s a big gamble. Maybe Hughes instead.

I don’t like the way Robbo’s longest run in the team coincided with Moreno’s ankle injury problems. If they’re both fit I think Klopp gives some games to Moreno, and they could be the easier home games, with Robbo being saved for the tougher away games, games vs. Big 6, champions league etc.

VVD more nailed & well overdue attacking returns
