Virgil van Dijk’s first full season in a Liverpool shirt has much potential from a Fantasy perspective.

The club-record £75m signing from Southampton made an instant impact on Merseyside, helping the Liverpool defence to seven clean sheets in his 14 league appearances for the Reds.

Priced at £6.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season, van Dijk and left-back Andrew Robertson are the joint-most expensive defensive assets in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Liverpool welcome West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Southampton to Anfield in the first six Gameweeks and their defenders are proving to be popular FPL purchases: all five members of the perceived first-choice backline, including Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m), Dejan Lovren (£5.0m) and goalkeeper Alisson (£5.5m), have double-digit ownership.

The past two seasons have been something of a frustration, both for van Dijk personally and for his mostly untapped Fantasy potential.

Van Dijk’s debut Premier League campaign in 2015/16 still represents his personal FPL benchmark, with the-then Southampton centre-half registering three goals, ten clean sheets, 16 bonus points and 130 FPL points overall as the Saints finished sixth under Ronald Koeman.

A serious ankle injury suffered in January 2017 cut short his sophomore season with the Saints before a transfer window tussle for his services between Southampton and Liverpool hampered his pre-season preparations for the campaign just gone. Having handed in a transfer request in August of last year, van Dijk was to start just 11 league matches for the Saints before further speculation led to his omission from Mauricio Pellegrino’s team in mid-December.

The move to Anfield has firmly placed van Dijk back onto the FPL radar, though, and the Dutch international’s form in the final four months of 2017/18 hints at greater things to come: no Premier League defender kept more clean sheets than van Dijk (seven) after his Liverpool debut in Gameweek 24.

Van Dijk’s Initial Impact at Liverpool

Despite an inglorious first league appearance in a Liverpool shirt (a 1-0 away defeat to Swansea City), van Dijk’s positive effect on the Reds’ backline was palpable.

Before the Dutchman’s arrival, Liverpool had conceded goals at a rate of 1.21 per match (the sixth-best average in the league) and allowed a mean of 1.56 big chances per fixture (seventh-best). Six other Premier League sides had registered more clean sheets than Liverpool (nine) prior to van Dijk’s capture, meanwhile.

From Gameweeks 24 to 38, the Reds conceded an average of 0.66 goals per fixture (the joint-best mean in the top flight) and only allowed their opposition an average of 1.2 big chances (joint-second best) per match. The Reds’ total of eight clean sheets – only one of which van Dijk wasn’t present for – over this period was also a division-high.

Liverpool’s defence in general improved in 2017/18 and their record at Anfield was notably impressive, with only ten goals conceded and 12 clean sheets registered (out of a total of 17) across the whole of the season.

Goal Threat

Van Dijk is surely due a goal or two this season. In 2017/18, the only defender to have more attempts on goal than the Dutch centre-back (27) without scoring was Brighton’s Shane Duffy. Twenty of van Dijk’s efforts were from set plays, highlighting his particular strength at dead-ball situations.

Van Dijk’s minutes-per-chance mean of 83.4 was also the best in the Premier League among centre-backs with more than 20 league appearances to their name.

From van Dijk’s Liverpool debut onwards, the only centre-half to have more efforts on goal (16) than the former Celtic defender was Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.

The Netherlands international was on target in the 3-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund this week and intriguingly took a direct free-kick in the 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Alisson’s Arrival

The acquisition of Brazil number one Alisson from Roma surely adds to van Dijk’s clean sheet potential. The world’s most expensive goalkeeper had a better save percentage (79.3%) last season than all other Premier League goalkeepers bar David de Gea; Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet’s save percentages, by contrast, were down at 68.9% and 61.0% respectively.

De Gea and Nick Pope were the only Premier League goalkeepers with a better “expected goals (xG) prevented” total than Alisson, who saved a net total of eight shots that he was expected to concede.

De Gea was also the only goalkeeper in the English top flight who bettered Alisson’s clean sheet total of 18 for Roma.

A Lack of Rotation Threat

For Liverpool to make a serious tilt at the Premier League title this season, then the only top-class centre-back on their books is surely a must-start in the vast majority of their domestic matches.

From Gameweek 26 until the end of the 2017/18 season, van Dijk started every single one of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures. This unbroken sequence of appearances came in spite of the Reds’ progress to the final of the UEFA Champions League and Klopp’s predilection for rotating other key members of his side, including Robertson and Alexander-Arnold (both of whom failed to start three of those 13 matches).

That van Dijk – unlike Alexander-Arnold and Lovren – has had the summer off from international duty also bodes well for his chances of a sustained run in the first team right from Gameweek 1.

Is Lucas Moura likely to cement a starting role at Spurs this season? What do we think will be Poch's first choice starting XI?

I think he’s nailed for the start and has great quality! He’s in my team for the first few at least with a view to switching to Mkhi or one of the inordinate number of wait and sees in the 7-7.5m bracket.

I wouldnt worry so much about rotation with 4.5M mids as they offer little attacking threat more often than not anyway try to pick players who are the most nailed on to be in the starting XI so they at least pick up appearance points for sure if you need them

There’s the valuation piece, but then here’s also the fact that neither player are really good enough. Good squad additions maybe, but not players you build a team around, and Utd do not need any more squad fillers at this stage

I am pretty sure that Mourinho is trying to destroy our once great club.

          Another completely unnecessary signing (Willian).

Dont watch Leicester enough so cant really comment on Maguire although have to say he looked during World Cup.
Willian however is a great player and I think he was mistreated at Chelsea, I can easily see him nailing a starting role on the right flank at United.

Ok maybe great is a bit too far but apart from Sanchez he is better then all United's wide players.

He’s a shade behind Lingard imo, Lingard was much more productive last year and is a few years younger so has improvement to come. Martial has much more potential. Rashford has as much if not more threat, and is only about 20. Mata is not very mobile so not really a fair comparison. But I’m not excited about Lingard, Martial, Rashford or Mata so I sure as hell do not want another player of that ilk bloating an already bloated squad. Mentioning fees of 65m just makes it surreal which is why I’m actually hoping it’s some sort of elaborate windup by Jose.

Martial - we dont really know what he can do, out of Jose's favour.
Rashford - should be played up front.
Lingard - had a decent spell last season plus good WC but can he deliever goods week in & out ?
Mata - you've said it yourself

In my opinion trio of Sanchez - Lukaku/Rashford - Willian would be stronger than any any combination of above without Brazilian also dont forget he can score from free kicks.

That’s crazy talk, I think you’ve been taken in by the fashionable Willian hype. He’s not an upgrade to Lingard or Martial, both of whom scored more than him, in less minutes than him last year.

Plus the original point is that he is not what Utd need - Utd need a great player, not a another squad player like Willian, who goes into an already bloated pool of wide men.

Sabotaging the club for the next manager so he can say everything was fine when he left, they were in second etc. Whereas in reality they wer e19 points behind city last year and probably worse this year with these signings. Fred is another one it’s hard to get excited about.

Trying to create a set and forget defence (including GK) for the first 4-6 GWs:

    Budget: £22m

    A) Shaw, Baily, Van Dijk & Alisson

Seri's a gamble, would have Salah (but someone's got to provide the assist, so Mane for me provides good value). A lot of the attention will be on Salah, so Mane might flourish this season? Wishful thinking?

From watching Liverpool games since he signed he is targeted at every corner, he got a goal on his debut but it was an FA Cup game v Everton so didn’t get any FPL points.

I hope he will start converting some of the chances this season, and I just don’t like the way Robbo will lose games to Moreno if they are both fit. And they would likely be the easier plum home fixtures where Klopp can rest Robertson

I’d back VVD to outscore Robertson, will be an interesting battle

Agree from what I saw he was getting his head on corners. Just he was last season too but failing to put the ball in the net and losing the baps for chances missed. One to watch but think I prefer Robbo

3 easy routes to making a killing in fpl, no matter how good or bad you are

1 - appear on scoutcast ( proven tactic)
2 - Put FPL in the front of your name and go on Twitter
3 - self proclaim that you are the best in the world.

          Foster, Fabianski

          Robbo, Mendy, Cedric, Zanka, Peltier

          Salah, Eriksen, Mkhi, Sessegnon, Kenedy

          Aguero, Tosun, Zaha

Really want Arnie but his fixtures are horrid...

Don't think I like double city Def. Keep Ed downgrade/It's to whoever else you like, Manu def??
With no Salah I think you need at least one of Kun, Abu, Kane. I struggle to see who you'll captain each week.
If going with a 5.5 gk, I wouldn't bother with a 4.5 on the bench. Its a nice attempt at something different alright

How are you so confident with Arsenal and Unai Emery?

There are only a few examples where a team performs good / better after a long-term manager leaves. Check the history books how teams almost always perform worse when their long-term manager leaves.

I am talking of at least a decade. Teams who played under the same managers for at least a decade almost always, always performed worse when the manager was changed.

Of course, there are a few exceptions to prove the rule. But why do you think Arsenal will be an exception?

I think Wenger had already started taking them into decline in terms of under performing. They've got a good squad and there's a good number of what would be the first team that were fairly new under Wenger, so new manager to them wouldn't be a big change.
                Time will tell though

-- A little bit more money on the bench for my taste. But that's not a bad thing necessarily, because I lose points many times with a poor bench and unexpected ommissions of first team players.

-- Kane will probably not start in GW1. Wait and watch.

-- Upgrade Ryan Fraser. An extra £1 there could significantly improve your points.

Overall, I like your team. Non-template and effective.

Are you worried about having TAA, Mané, Firmino as your Liverpool slots?

You are very exposed to Salah, Robertson, and/or VVD doing well... and things seem to have lined up for those 3 to do very well.

I have a similar forward line, but Laca instead of Auba as I will always captain Salah so don’t see value in an 11.0

Also have a Mili think he’s a great pick

            Bailly, PVA, Coleman very solid

Would prefer extra city mid to Eriksen but Eriksen very good obviously

I’d rather be late than early with Richarlison after last year!

Thoughts on putting all your defensive eggs in one basket? I did this with Southampton a few years ago and they ended up with the best defensive record in the league, giving me more transfers to sort out my attack based on fixtures.

On this point, if you had to have only one team of defenders in your fantasy team who would you choose? Bear in mind the cost of them

Very high - Mili is an FPL God. 6.5m for a 10 goal midfielder is unheard of value. Also considering he started the season OOP at centre back when De Boer was there, and Palace basically lost their first 5 games, he had a very impressive last 30 games of the season.

From memory he wasn’t even on penalties all season either as bentekkers took one off him & missed it!

Can score DFK’s & is a good header from corners...

I think FPL have underpriced him to be honest. No indication the supply of fouls will decrease if Zaha stays. If Zaha goes it would be a different story though

Exactly my views. There's so much value this year at 6.5, irs really difficult to spend the funds.

          Rui P 4.0
          Mendy Robertson Tarkowski 4.0 4.0
          Salah Silva Pedro Richarlison Ward
          Aguero Laca Tosun

How’s this looking? Happy not to spend heavily on defenders as there’s some starting fodder this year

Downgrade tarkowski and upgrade one of the 4.0, so you have 2 4.5.
Not sure about Silva and I'm not convinced ward will be a starter once the season kicks off. The rest is nice
