Chris Wood (£6.5m) has the opportunity to be a cost-effective third striker in Fantasy Premier League this season.

His underlying data suggests that a clear run in the team without injuries that restricted him in 2017/18 can bring out his best.

In our latest Great Expectations piece we assess the case for trusting Wood with a place in our squads.

TOP CLARET

Our recent research into the Burnley squad showed that Wood is the club’s most dangerous goal threat for 2018/19. In the most recent campaign, no Clarets player averaged more shots in the box per game (1.5), touched the ball as many times in the penalty area (3.1) or had a higher goal conversion (25.6) than the New Zealand international. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was the only one of his team-mates to average more shots, but Wood still outscored him 10 league goals to nine.

STRONG FINISH

In the back-end of last season, Wood was boasting form that kept pace with some of the Premier League’s heavy hitters. After recovering from a knee injury to return in Gameweek 29, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) found the net more often than the Burnley man’s six times. Even more impressive was that Wood achieved that feat in fewer starts too, his seven comparing with Vardy’s nine and Aubameyang’s 10.

Over the aforementioned period, Wood ranked seventh for shots, was joint third for efforts on target and joint-fourth for goal conversion among players who had taken at least 10 shots. But crucially, only Aubameyang was afforded more big chances out of forwards.

CLEAR RUN

Wood’s first season at Turf Moor did not exactly run smoothly. Two injuries throughout the campaign limited him to just 24 starts, but a break over the summer has helped him get back to full fitness – in time to assist Sam Vokes (£5.5m) against Aberdeen in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Barnes has struggled with blisters over pre-season allowing Wood to string together some early consistency in the team.

Having a full season of starts in Lancashire should unlock Wood’s potential, considering his minutes per goal data from 2017/18 was so impressive. He averaged a goal every 163.3 minutes, almost the same as Vardy’s 162.8, who finished as the second-highest scoring forward in FPL. Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) were among the bigger names below Wood in this respect, with 179.3 and 185.1 minutes per goal respectively.

The only thing to be wary of is that Burnley’s involvement in Europe could trigger more rotation at Turf Moor than before, although manager Sean Dyche tends to avoid it where he can.

RUB OF THE GREEN

Burnley have a very favourable start to the 2018/19 season when it comes to the fixtures, which can often prove a factor in having a good overall season. With the exception of Manchester United in Gameweek 4, every match in the first eight Gameweeks for the Clarets is against a team that finished outside of the Premier League’s top 10 last season. Watford, Bournemouth and Huddersfield will all come to Turf Moor, as will United, while trips to Southampton, Fulham, Wolves and Cardiff could all yield goals for Burnley and Wood.

It's different without being mental. Not for me though. I think Zaha will end up POO.

And Brighton keeper for 38 weeks doesn't appeal. I did try to go for that extra premium mid but realised needed 4.5/4 GKs and baulked.

          1. stat
            8 years, 2 hours ago

I'm not stuck with a Brighton keeper for 38 weeks. I can easily restructure my squad when I inevitably WC early on. Zaha has been playing up front in pre-season and has been looking really good so I don't think he'll end up back on the wing. However I'm undecided between Zaha and Tosun but went for Zaha based on his form.

              • 11 Years
              8 years, 2 hours ago

Yeah. I worry Tosun needs a goal from all these chances or Niasse could get the nod. If Tosun can just get ONE against a proper team as he's obviously first choice as it stands. He was in my team and might be again but ... mmm. I rate Zaha but to me he's a winger and I think he'll end up back there at some point.

I think he COULD be brilliant. Remember Kane's breakout season when he started as the Europa League guy? Foden needs ta chance at the big league. We'll never learn how good he can be 20 mins at a time.

Been shuffling around Palace players for a while. Great fixtures and a number of good value options on paper. Had PVA for a while, but surely Schlupp playing midfield at 4.5 is a better option? Just hoping he is actually gonna he nailed there.

Yeh I’ve got AWB as well, but really just because he’s the best 4.0 option I can find. I don’t think it’s worth PVA and Schlupp though. Don’t like double up defence unless it’s United with superb fixtures or something.

Why is Robertson in more teams on here then VVD at the same price?

    1. Worsle90
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 2 hours ago

Assists, probably. Although VVD has a goal in him.

    2. stat
      8 years, 2 hours ago

Possibly because VVD was unlucky not to get any attacking returns last season, and Roberton's PPM (5) is vastly superior to VVD's (3) but that's obviously not taking the fact that VVD spent 21 GWs at Southampton last season.

His PPM since he joined Liverpool is 3.8. Robertson's PPM in that time is 6.45.

      1. stat
        8 years, 2 hours ago

Which is still obviously in favor of Robertson, but I think VVD will get a couple attacking returns next season and he's probably likelier to play more minutes barring injuries.

Interesting that GB’s post is very in line with my current thinking:

    Ederson (Stekelenburg)
    Robertson Tarkowski Lovren Tomkins (Wan-Bissaka)
Hazard De Bruyne Mane Eriksen (Stephens)
    Aubameyang Wood (Quaner)

Will start with a different City mid if KDB doesn’t make it back, and then swap. Definitely looking to have the midfield carry me this season.

That is a sick team. I think best Salahless I have seen. I have Mo, a more expensive back line, Arnie rather than CW, and a 5.0 in place of your 4th mid, but your midfield makes a compelling case for going without the Egyptian. Well done.

    A) Sane & Morata

    Or

    B) Mahrez & Lacazette

    Rest of team

    Ederson (speroni)
VVD - Coleman -Shaw (hoedt - AWB)
    Salah - Mane - Moura - Richarlison - Sane/Mahrez*
    Wood (Quaner) Morata / Lacazette*

If Mahrez is out for a couple of weeks then it's likely that he'll get a few starts until Sterling is fit

Sterling and Mahrez provide far too many rotational complications for me

I'd rather my 7.5m player get rotated than my 9m/11m one.

I'm confused as to why Sane hasn't come on as a sub yet.
Saving him for the Community Shield?

Based on 2018 form Bernardo should definitely be the starter. Was on fire in the second half of the season. Great WC performances too. Definitely a superior player to Sterling, nothing against Sterling though!
