Chris Wood (£6.5m) has the opportunity to be a cost-effective third striker in Fantasy Premier League this season.

His underlying data suggests that a clear run in the team without injuries that restricted him in 2017/18 can bring out his best.

In our latest Great Expectations piece we assess the case for trusting Wood with a place in our squads.

TOP CLARET

Our recent research into the Burnley squad showed that Wood is the club’s most dangerous goal threat for 2018/19. In the most recent campaign, no Clarets player averaged more shots in the box per game (1.5), touched the ball as many times in the penalty area (3.1) or had a higher goal conversion (25.6) than the New Zealand international. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was the only one of his team-mates to average more shots, but Wood still outscored him 10 league goals to nine.

STRONG FINISH

In the back-end of last season, Wood was boasting form that kept pace with some of the Premier League’s heavy hitters. After recovering from a knee injury to return in Gameweek 29, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) found the net more often than the Burnley man’s six times. Even more impressive was that Wood achieved that feat in fewer starts too, his seven comparing with Vardy’s nine and Aubameyang’s 10.

Over the aforementioned period, Wood ranked seventh for shots, was joint third for efforts on target and joint-fourth for goal conversion among players who had taken at least 10 shots. But crucially, only Aubameyang was afforded more big chances out of forwards.

CLEAR RUN

Wood’s first season at Turf Moor did not exactly run smoothly. Two injuries throughout the campaign limited him to just 24 starts, but a break over the summer has helped him get back to full fitness – in time to assist Sam Vokes (£5.5m) against Aberdeen in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Barnes has struggled with blisters over pre-season allowing Wood to string together some early consistency in the team.

Having a full season of starts in Lancashire should unlock Wood’s potential, considering his minutes per goal data from 2017/18 was so impressive. He averaged a goal every 163.3 minutes, almost the same as Vardy’s 162.8, who finished as the second-highest scoring forward in FPL. Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) were among the bigger names below Wood in this respect, with 179.3 and 185.1 minutes per goal respectively.

The only thing to be wary of is that Burnley’s involvement in Europe could trigger more rotation at Turf Moor than before, although manager Sean Dyche tends to avoid it where he can.

RUB OF THE GREEN

Burnley have a very favourable start to the 2018/19 season when it comes to the fixtures, which can often prove a factor in having a good overall season. With the exception of Manchester United in Gameweek 4, every match in the first eight Gameweeks for the Clarets is against a team that finished outside of the Premier League’s top 10 last season. Watford, Bournemouth and Huddersfield will all come to Turf Moor, as will United, while trips to Southampton, Fulham, Wolves and Cardiff could all yield goals for Burnley and Wood.

With Douglas having officially departed, I've sadly had to drop the team which I'd set up with four city players in it, pre-Mahrez transfer.

I've built a very template team in response.

    Ederson (Steele)
    Azpi Robertson Bailly (Bamba, Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah Sanchez Richarlison Cairney (Chalobah)
    Aguero Zaha Wood

Don't chu insult my boy Tom Cairney! 🙁

On a serious note, I think he'll do really well this season and fully outscore his price tag (5+ goals, 10+ assists I'm banking on).

But your right, I could play 4-3-3 and have a less obviously weak spot.

He’s in my side because he’s such a class player and I believe he will do big things. I totally get that’s it’s a risk, that he might have plenty of yellow cards, that he may assist the assist etc, but it’s fun having at least one punt to start the season and one player new to our league too just to freshen things up. I believe he could be a candidate for player of the season and will be great fun to watch.

Re the ongoing discussion about United being so negative under Jose, it’s worth remembering that last season they went off like an express train. 21 goals scored in their first 7 league games, including hitting four on three occasions.

Then matchweek 8 saw the much criticised performance at Anfield where they drew 0-0 and the rest was history.

That rather defence minded draw against Liverpool didn’t actually seem quite so bad when put into the context of how many sides got thrashed there, my own Watford team among them!

It's problematic for them when they are not starting out with players such as Lukaku & Pogba.

I'd be more tempted by Mata of the lot of them at the moment. He's consistent, and consistently involved in attacks. Although Sanchez looked perky in the last friendly, too.

        1. willl
          • 10 Years

I fully intend to get rid of both of them after a few weeks, Martial may leave my team before the first match.

            • 9 Years

Right.... and I'm saying perhaps Mata is a better option.

    3. Deulofail
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

The express train only came into effect in the last 10 mins of the games iirc. More about the unfit opponent collapsing than United's attacking verve. I'm not convinced it was even about their stamina as it was about the opponts' lack of stamina, since United weren't able to work teams into nearly the same level of exhaustion and calamity for the rest of the season.

      1. maltasi
        • 16 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

        Very good point.

Still, I think one of the good tricks of FF is to try and find players who, for whatever reason, had underwhelming campaigns the year before but who could bounce back. The likes of Miki, Siggy, etc. Maybe Alexis will be another. United fans seem very positive about his chances. He’s had his first summer off for five years and really has an opportunity now to show what he can do. He could, stress could, be a really decent differential this season. But I do take on board all the caveats about playing in a negative United side etc.

        1. Deulofail
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 4 months ago

I'm coming round to the idea him *not* being a bad option 🙂 As I said above, he looked spritely in the recent friendly, which doesn't necessarily mean much, besides the fact he was enjoying the game (and taking control of the game) rather than throwing his hands in the air and walking everywhere. Positive signs if anything.

As fantasy football involves so much guess work, I find a managers playing style is one of the few things you can depend on. Jose parks the bus, always has, always will and I'm not willing to gamble on expensive united players when there are much better players playing much more expansive football week in week out. One less headache!

    Pickford / Speroni

Shaw / Trippier / Robertson / Cedric (Malone)

Hmm, don't really like Shaw as an FPL option. Pickford, Hazard and Pickford all came back late from the world cup so might not start for the first few weeks.

I would probably prefer Mane/Eriksen over Hazard tbh.

Yeah, Hazard really unbalances this side. One of the mid-priced midfielders (6.5-7.5) will pop, and you’ll have to do surgery to get them. I prefer getting a premium forward like Aubameyang or Agüero and downgrading either Zaha or Arnie.

    NEWCASTLE ACCEPT MITROVIC BID

Sky sources understand Newcastle have accepted a bid from Fulham for striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Serb has left their Portuguese training camp to finalise his move to Craven Cottage. We understand the fee to be in the region of £20m.

Just the whole situation with him not being priced up whilst on Newcastle's books has bothered me slightly. I get not wanting him to be underpriced, but still think it's been a tad sneaky from FPL towers not to put him in the game.

Did those prices go up also? What was the most expensive price for a player at any point during a season?

Not sure when it started but pretty sure Henry was 14 million, I might be wrong but I think Ronaldo was 13 mill at his highest. Lampard possibly 12.

Any new 4.5m mids and forwards emerge yet? I'm still on Chalobah and Kamara.

If Chelsea don't sign a striker Morata at 9m is interesting.

He is. But they will sign Higuain and Morata will go to AC Milan
