Chris Wood (£6.5m) has the opportunity to be a cost-effective third striker in Fantasy Premier League this season.

His underlying data suggests that a clear run in the team without injuries that restricted him in 2017/18 can bring out his best.

In our latest Great Expectations piece we assess the case for trusting Wood with a place in our squads.

TOP CLARET

Our recent research into the Burnley squad showed that Wood is the club’s most dangerous goal threat for 2018/19. In the most recent campaign, no Clarets player averaged more shots in the box per game (1.5), touched the ball as many times in the penalty area (3.1) or had a higher goal conversion (25.6) than the New Zealand international. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was the only one of his team-mates to average more shots, but Wood still outscored him 10 league goals to nine.

STRONG FINISH

In the back-end of last season, Wood was boasting form that kept pace with some of the Premier League’s heavy hitters. After recovering from a knee injury to return in Gameweek 29, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) found the net more often than the Burnley man’s six times. Even more impressive was that Wood achieved that feat in fewer starts too, his seven comparing with Vardy’s nine and Aubameyang’s 10.

Over the aforementioned period, Wood ranked seventh for shots, was joint third for efforts on target and joint-fourth for goal conversion among players who had taken at least 10 shots. But crucially, only Aubameyang was afforded more big chances out of forwards.

CLEAR RUN

Wood’s first season at Turf Moor did not exactly run smoothly. Two injuries throughout the campaign limited him to just 24 starts, but a break over the summer has helped him get back to full fitness – in time to assist Sam Vokes (£5.5m) against Aberdeen in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Barnes has struggled with blisters over pre-season allowing Wood to string together some early consistency in the team.

Having a full season of starts in Lancashire should unlock Wood’s potential, considering his minutes per goal data from 2017/18 was so impressive. He averaged a goal every 163.3 minutes, almost the same as Vardy’s 162.8, who finished as the second-highest scoring forward in FPL. Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) were among the bigger names below Wood in this respect, with 179.3 and 185.1 minutes per goal respectively.

The only thing to be wary of is that Burnley’s involvement in Europe could trigger more rotation at Turf Moor than before, although manager Sean Dyche tends to avoid it where he can.

RUB OF THE GREEN

Burnley have a very favourable start to the 2018/19 season when it comes to the fixtures, which can often prove a factor in having a good overall season. With the exception of Manchester United in Gameweek 4, every match in the first eight Gameweeks for the Clarets is against a team that finished outside of the Premier League’s top 10 last season. Watford, Bournemouth and Huddersfield will all come to Turf Moor, as will United, while trips to Southampton, Fulham, Wolves and Cardiff could all yield goals for Burnley and Wood.

    Help is needed please

    Hey Guys

In your opinion who is the best 4.5/5.0 DFs to have from the following teams

    Bournemouth
    Brighton
    Burnley
    Cardiff
    Fulham
    Newcastle
    Southampton
    West Ham

    Any ideas would be welcomed

      Yikes, what a question.

      Bournemouth - avoid defence imo.

Brighton - Dunk at 4.5 is decent shout, missed loads of good chances last year, would like to think he'd put a few more away this season.

Burnley - Lowton, most attacking threat (assists) and nailed.

Cardiff - Fear they'll lose a lot of games 1-0, Morrison has great goal threat from headers at 5.0 but wouldn't want to spend that much on what I believe will be the 20th placed team this season. Maybe Bamba at 4.5 as a sub who will definitely play?

Fulham - We don't have any defenders with a goalscoring threat, and doubt we'll keep many clean sheets. (I hope we win by outscoring our opponents, as we did last season!)... if forced, our full backs Christie and Le Marchand at 4.5 look most attractive.

Newcastle - Lascelles best and only option at 5.0 imo, but wait for Fabian Schar's price as he has great goal threat from set pieces.

Southampton - Cedric or bust at 4.5, Bednarek at 4.0 one to look out for if nailed.

West Ham - Fredericks at 5.0 has brilliant attacking threat, but think Diop at 4.5 is a better investment for value.

      Ake
      Dunk/Duffy but not yet
      Lowton/Ward
      Morrison gets goals I think
      Ream maybe
      Lascelles
      Cedric Hoedt 4.5 Bertrand 5.0
      Ogbonna/Diop

Have just had a momentary lapse of madness

    Schmeichel
    Azpi, Otamendi, Bellerin
    Salah, Eriksen, Mahrez, Cairney
    Arnie, Zaha, Firmino

Just downgraded Aguero/Auba for Arnie - enabled me to upgrade defence. I'm hopeful that Schmeichel could be Chelsea bound and I think Cairney could be a good punt.

    Subs: Stekelenburg, Malone, Peltier, Stephens.

I'm figuring that I can do without a Premium Forward as will be captaining Salah for ever more.

Good thinking or doomed to failure?

"I'm figuring that I can do without a Premium Forward as will be captaining Salah for ever more."

I agree with this train of thought.

However, I'm not sure you have necessarily optimized the rest of your team with the leftover cash. Otamendi may be prone to rotation (maybe not in the first couple of weeks); Bellerin has tough opening fixtures. Two fairly weak midfielders.

Squad is looking a lot better now, cautiously optimistic that him signing will see us safe from relegation this season.

Would love it if we could get Mawson over the line too, but not convinced we'll win that fight.

How do you think we'll line up GW1? For my money:

      Fabri
      Christie Odoi (Mawson) Ream LeMarchard
      McDonald
      Seri Cairney
      Sessegnon Schurrle
      Mitro

You've got weak bench. Need few more signings, atleast one more winger IMO.

We've actually got quite a few wingers on the bench (Ayite, Kamara, Kebano) however they're definitely not up to standard for starting games. Impact players from the bench.

The area we need to improve our depth is defence, we're fairly shocking back there.

Kebano and Kamara are good as back-up wingers imo. If anything it is the back-ups at CM that we look a little weak.

Imo it looks like it’s more value in the 6.5/7.0 price bracket amongst the forwards compared to the midfielders. Arnie/King/Tosun/Zaha should score better than Jota/Sessegnon/Mhki etc. I like Richarlison as a 6.5 mid though.

With lots of interesting premium midfielders, should we invest more heavily in midfield and have a relative cheap attack?

    1. Dannyb

One premium attacker plus Arnie or Zaha I reckon is the way I'm going.

Other way around. There are many good 6.5-7 mids, not so many good strikers. What makes Zaha and Arnie good options at 7? That is probably the limit i'd pay for them as mids where they had access to more points so what makes them more attractive this season as strikers?

Because as soon as one of Auba, Aguero, Kane, Laca, Lukaku, Firmino scores a brace, you'll break this team to get them. It has no flexibility, your funds are too spread out.

Your point about inflexibility is completely false. I have plenty of expensive midfielders which can be downgraded to fund a premium forward.

Even Azpi/Shaw can be downgraded to a degree.

Sure, it will may take 2 transfers, but I do not plan to go gung-ho with immediate transfers.

              - Auba & Laca have two tough opening fixtures
              - Aguero has ARS/HUDS. Could definitely score, but he's not actually nailed.
              - Kane not back from WC just yet. Barely anyone here has him & at least I have Eriksen
              - In place if Firmino I've gone for Mané as Bobby hasn't even joined up with the team yet. No issue starting with Mané.

I agree with Drip Doctor, and I think your counter arguments are vague.

First of all you got Mahrez, and you point out, that Agüero is not actually nailed? Well - Mahrez is not exactly more nailed than Agüero?

Arsenal might have two tough fixtures, and I would advice against investing in any of their defenders, but they might be the only top team ready to starting their best 11 (Liverpool close to do the same). City, Man U, Chelsea and Spurs are not even close doing that in the first 2 weeks. My point is, that Arsenal attack should on paper score more goals against City, Chelsea & West Ham than West Ham (Arnie) will against Liverpool, Bournemouth and Arsenal?

Doctors point about flexibility is about how hard is it for you to get a premium striker (let's say around 11 mil)

                Would be Mahrez -> 5.0 and Zaha/Arnie -> 11.0
Your heavy defense and the opportunity to downgrade those won't help you much unless you do Azpi -> 4.0 and Zaha/Arnie -> 9.5, but that is not exactly a dream scenario. If you won't a premium striker I would say, that you would need to make 3 transfers unless you got some dough banked up and ready to be used.

That is why it is always nice to atleast have 1 premium defender, midfielder and attacker. Then you can always do it with just 1 transfer if it is urgent.

Neither. Prioritising nailed starters (bar Shaw & maybe Mahrez).

Would have (and may still) started with Aubu/Laca if not for their first two matches. Aguero is certainly an option, but Jesus is always a bit of a worry.

We're arsenal good or PSG poor in today's game?? Scoreline suggests some improvement in arsenal, fiery lacazette ...review from anybody who watched the game would be helpful

Also, how are Chelsea looking ?..any assets to monitor?

B-team PSG, really - with a lot of youngsters. Arsenal looked good, and the younger members of the squad did their bit, as well. Aubameyang assisting and Lacazette scoring is what you take from this game, FPL-wise.

Morata is getting less impressive by the touch - looked sharp in the first 10 minutes but not so much since the goal. Could be pacing himself in a friendly but will be interesting to see if he can turn it back on again.

Lol. I get that all the time. I've just tinkered for thefirst time in a week or so, and figured I could do better without. No doubt I'll change my mind again soon, but I'm fancying the mid-budget strikers less and less as pre-seson goes on, so like that selling Salah allows the upgrade to Vardy/Morata/Firmino/Lacazette with money to spare.

PVA could be someone better, then it would be ok. I dont like having a 4.0 keeper, you know that whoever you pick will turn out to be shite, give yourself two rolls of the dice.

Fair enough. PVA happens to be one of my favourite FPL options this season (at least before it's started anyway). Hoping for good things from Palace so long as Zaha stays, though I'd be disconcerted if he does end up playing wide instead of up front.

Yeah, the keeper situation is undecided, but if Schemeichel goes to Chelsea, then he kinda picks himself, and I don't want a rotation option for him, so I'd take the risk with a 4.0. If Schmeichel stays at Leicester, then I'll go for two 4.5s, most likely. Cheers

Neither Arnie/Zaha started last season as forwards. They are now. Their scores picked up once they began playing the forward roles (and Zaha was injured for a fair part of the season.)

Bonus points vs. Extra CS/Goal points is of course a factor.

...but so is form. Both are banging them in, in pre-season.

Lack of other options at striker level.
Lack of playing 4.5 strikers, so it’s risky to have a 4.5 slot in that position.
They should get more bonus points as strikers.

I agree though, I’m not over the moon with either of them as options.

    Hello everyone!
It’s that time of the year again where we are less than two weeks from the beginning of the EPL. Because of this, I decided to write about 3 or 4 friendly games that might be of interest to some of you, as I did last year.

    RENNES – EVERTON
Everton began their pre-season with a 22-0 destruction of Irdning in a game that was a total mismatch and the Toffees have since gone downhill with a draw against League One side Bury, another with Lille, a narrow defeat to Porto and a surprising 3-0 loss to the newly-promoted Blackburn Rovers.
After a surprisingly pleasant season last year in which they finished 5th in Ligue 1, Rennes have been back to work in pre-season ahead of the new campaign, having started playing matches in mid-July. Like the Toffees, Rennes began their pre-season with a 9-0 destruction over the Austriac club Lienz. They lost the following match to last year’s Europa League semi-finalist RB Salzburg 3-0. The following week they narrowly lost to 3-2 to Anderlecht.
For this penultimate friendly game, in the Stade Municipal de Vitre, Marco Silva rolled out his usual 4-2-3-1 formation with: Maarten Stekelenburg; Seamus Coleman, Phil Jagielka (c), Michael Keane and Leighton Baines; Idrissa Gana Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin; Sandro Ramirez, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison; Cenk Tosun

    TACTICS
Defensively speaking, Everton tries to condition the construction of the opponent's offensive game by pressing high up the pitch. When the ball is on the opposing midfield, Sigurdsson presses one of the centre backs, as Everton plays in a 4-4-2 formation. When Rennes were able to get past ther half of the pitch and have the ball in the Everton’s half, the Toffees defended in a usual 4-4-1-1 where Sigurdsson joined Gueye and Schneiderlin. Marco Silva's team also tries to shorten the width of the game. For example, when the ball is on the left side of the field, Coleman and Sandro come together into the centre of the pitch.

In offensive terms, Everton relies heavily on the vertical movements of Coleman and Baines and the inner movements of Sandro and Richarlison. When Keane or Jagielka have the ball, Coleman and Baines almost play as wingers and Sandro and Richarlison move close to Sigurdsson, making a type of a 2-2-5-1 formation. Because of that, what happened many times during the game was one of two things: 1) Keane or Jagielka tried many long passes to Baines or to Coleman; 2) Keane or Jagielka tried short passes to Richarlison or Sandro, who got the ball who tried to reatin the ball under pressure, return the pass to Gueye or Schneiderlin for them to put the ball in Baines or Coleman.

    1st HALF HIGHLIGHTS
15th min: Good save from Blues keeper Stekelenburg who blocks Benjamin Andres' crisp header after a cross from the left side of the Toffees’ defense.
19th min: Everton have the ball in the net through Tosun - but it's chalked off for a push from Richarlison who had nodded the ball back across goal, after a cross from the right from Coleman.
24th min: Another swift attack sees Richarlison skip past a challenge and play in Sandro. The Spaniard drags his effort wide and it flies a few yards past the post.
28th min: GOAL FOR RENNES! Everton are caught out on the counter-attack, after a lost ball from Gueye. James Lea Siliki ventures forward on the left wing (Coleman was in is usual position way way forward up the pitch) and his centre is converted at the back post by Benjamin Bourigeaud. 1-0 to the home side.
31st min: Richarlison, once again, offers some spark on the far touchline. He weaved and skipped past three challenges before being upended 25 yards from goal. Sigurdsson took the resulting free-kick but the playmaker couldn't get his attempt up and over the Wall
34th min: Richarlison again involved as Everton push for an equaliser. He went down under a clumsy-looking tackle inside the box but the referee waved away any penalty appeals.
35th min: GOAL FOR RENNES! The hosts double their lead through Jordy Siebatcheu, again from another left-winged cross by James Lea Siliki. This time was Jagielka who did a wrong pass in his own half. Coleman was already bombing forward so the right hand side of Everton didn’t have any cover. 2-0 for Rennes.
37th min: Richarlison has gone close to pulling one back with a sliding shot which he couldn't quite keep down, with the ball flying just over the top, after a cross from Sandro.
41st min: Tosun goes within inches of scoring with a glancing header from a wide Sigurdsson delivery from a indirect free-kick.
45th min: GOAL FOR EVERTON! The Blues pull one back right on the stroke of half-time through a fantastically-taken finish from Richarlison. He forced his way into the penalty box and drills a low finish across goal and inside the far post. 2-1 is now the scoreline.

    2nd HALF HIGHLIGHTS
49th min: What a goal that would have been from Seamus Coleman! He carried the ball a good 30 or 40 yards, this time from the right to the centre, before seeing a left-foot shot rise just over the crossbar.
63rd min: Denis Will Poha scuffs a shot at Maarten Steklenburg, after a great play from the right attacking side of Rennes. It's the first save that the Everton keeper has had to make in this second period.
75th min: A high boot from Richarlison catches Hamari Traore on the body, towards the shoulder area he is brandished with a yellow card.
75th min: Substitutions for Everton: Gueye --> Tom Davies; Sandro --> Mirallas; Tosun --> Niasse
77th min: GOAL FOR RENNES! This time from the left hand side of Everton. Leighton Baines was way to up the field… Well you know the rest. The home side restore their two-goal lead through substitute Faitout Maouasse. The pacy player got away down the right flank and slide a low finish to the right of Steklenburg in goal.
79th min: GOAL FOR RENNES! The French side strike again, this time through James Lea Silki. A ball was lost in the centre of the field by the Toffees and Coleman was already bombing forward. The Rennes’ midfield who recoreved the ball only had to pass to Lea Silki who made a run between Jagielka and the space left by Coleman. 4-1!
88th min: Another effort from Richarlison. This time volleying over the target with an acrobatic attempt after a great combination between Coleman and Mirallas on the right hand side.

    CONCLUSIONS
As many of you must have noticed, Marco Silva's team have plenty of weaknesses in two crucial moments of the game: offensive construction and defensive transition. What happened many times was that Gueye, Davies, Schneiderlin and even Jagielka, lost the ball in a very critical position, causing Rennes to launch dangerous counterattacks. Adding to this, none of the defensive midfielders occupy the space left by Coleman and Baines, making the Everton defense an easy prey to runs made by the attacking opponents in those same areas of the pitch.
Coleman was involved a lot in the Everton attacks, making numerous crosses. In contrast, although Baines was in attacking areas, the Englishman did not make any cross at all during the game.
Richarlison is clearly the danger man of the Toffees’ attack.
Sigurdsson was a bit disappeared from the game.
Sigurdsson was the Mr. Set Piece. He took all the corners, indirect free kicks and direct free kicks.

As always any question is welcome. I will, in the near future, try to make more round-ups of these kind from other games
