Chris Wood (£6.5m) has the opportunity to be a cost-effective third striker in Fantasy Premier League this season.

His underlying data suggests that a clear run in the team without injuries that restricted him in 2017/18 can bring out his best.

In our latest Great Expectations piece we assess the case for trusting Wood with a place in our squads.

TOP CLARET

Our recent research into the Burnley squad showed that Wood is the club’s most dangerous goal threat for 2018/19. In the most recent campaign, no Clarets player averaged more shots in the box per game (1.5), touched the ball as many times in the penalty area (3.1) or had a higher goal conversion (25.6) than the New Zealand international. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was the only one of his team-mates to average more shots, but Wood still outscored him 10 league goals to nine.

STRONG FINISH

In the back-end of last season, Wood was boasting form that kept pace with some of the Premier League’s heavy hitters. After recovering from a knee injury to return in Gameweek 29, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) found the net more often than the Burnley man’s six times. Even more impressive was that Wood achieved that feat in fewer starts too, his seven comparing with Vardy’s nine and Aubameyang’s 10.

Over the aforementioned period, Wood ranked seventh for shots, was joint third for efforts on target and joint-fourth for goal conversion among players who had taken at least 10 shots. But crucially, only Aubameyang was afforded more big chances out of forwards.

CLEAR RUN

Wood’s first season at Turf Moor did not exactly run smoothly. Two injuries throughout the campaign limited him to just 24 starts, but a break over the summer has helped him get back to full fitness – in time to assist Sam Vokes (£5.5m) against Aberdeen in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Barnes has struggled with blisters over pre-season allowing Wood to string together some early consistency in the team.

Having a full season of starts in Lancashire should unlock Wood’s potential, considering his minutes per goal data from 2017/18 was so impressive. He averaged a goal every 163.3 minutes, almost the same as Vardy’s 162.8, who finished as the second-highest scoring forward in FPL. Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) were among the bigger names below Wood in this respect, with 179.3 and 185.1 minutes per goal respectively.

The only thing to be wary of is that Burnley’s involvement in Europe could trigger more rotation at Turf Moor than before, although manager Sean Dyche tends to avoid it where he can.

RUB OF THE GREEN

Burnley have a very favourable start to the 2018/19 season when it comes to the fixtures, which can often prove a factor in having a good overall season. With the exception of Manchester United in Gameweek 4, every match in the first eight Gameweeks for the Clarets is against a team that finished outside of the Premier League’s top 10 last season. Watford, Bournemouth and Huddersfield will all come to Turf Moor, as will United, while trips to Southampton, Fulham, Wolves and Cardiff could all yield goals for Burnley and Wood.

Girls, your team is bad because you don't have Auba, Laca, Kun, Jesus, Kane, Firmino, Mahrez, KDB, Sane, Hazard, Sanchez, Lukaku, Vardy, Mhiki, Ericksen, Pogba, Zaha, Arnie, Sessegnon, Deolufeo, Jota, or Mane and as soon as one of them scores a brace in the first week you'll be scrambling to get them in.

    Patricio,

    Salah, Mane, Mahrez, Pedro

    Aguero, Arnautovic

    Subs: Boruc, W-B, Kamara, Stephens

Pedro. Too much competition for Chelsea's RW spot at the moment.

Unless anything new happens, it'll be between Willian/Pedro, with Hudson-Odoi on the fringes (possible sub?).

Richarlison, however, is going to be playing most (if not all) matches. Just gotta hope he hits the target!

Given Everton defence conceding so much is Bertrand better option over Coleman and use .5 m to get Sørloth over Kamara or to upgrade 4.5 mid ?

You have Kamara and a 4.5 mid AND Coleman? Hmmmmm. Not for me. I would downgrade Coleman to Tomkins and get Sorloth and a 5.0 mid

Neither Bertrand or Coleman are worth their current prices, IMO.

5m is a tricky price-point. Shaw is worth monitoring for usage in the first couple of weeks. PVA at 5.5m is interesting. So are Bellerin/Kolasinac (but I personally wouldn't start with either of those).

Plenty of Burnley options at 5.0m, with the caveat of Europa League.

That's the point of pre season, there's no such thing as bad form to help you out (no reliable form indicators, anyway).

Just pick the best team possible, but also one that allows you to get onto form players relatively easily. Job done.

The problem is that you will be needing a lot of wildcards with that pace.

I'm finally happy with my team. It only has one weakness. But that's as good as it's getting, so I guess I can log off until deadline day...

Is auba that much better an option than laca?

In theory, yes. But when you consider Laca playing more centrally and 1.5m cheaper, then things become a bit more complicated.

Go for Laca then. Arsenal have decent fixtures after the first two and Laca scored vs City last season.

He's a much better player, but is he a much better FPL option? I'm not sure yet, by no means a Lacazette fan but i'd expect him to better last seasons tally, i reckon 16-20 goals. Auba is capable of 25-30 but i depends what you'll do with the extra 1.5m. Who your other strikers are makes a difference aswell, eg, if you've got Aguero, i'd say Lacazette is fine. I think you need at least one 11m striker.

If Emery sticks to 433 (which is what he usually prefers) and Laca is nailed at ST, he’s looked good in pre-season there, so I may not pay an extra 1.5 for Auba. But if he occasionally switches to 4231 and plays Auba at ST, I’m not sure he’ll play Laca.

Just drop the one with the most difficult fixture. Saves me transfers in the long run. If that's the only issue with my team I'd say I'm good to go!

I’ve seen alot of teams with Arnie and Zaha and little Kane? Is there something I have missed? Will Kane miss the first few games?

    Fabianski/Patricio

    Robertson, Ward, Cedric, Wan-Bissaka, Peltier

    Salah, Richarlison, Pedro, Neves, Stephens

    Kane, Lacazette, Firmino

    Any immediate changes to suggest?

There is a massive sheep mentality going on with Zaha and Arnie. They were some descent picks when they were listed as midfielders, but suddenly they are the main must have players because they are listed as forwards. Yes, they are cheap forwards, but they will probably deliver as they did as midfielders. The cons of following this site! Massive sheep herds coming

I wouldn't say it's a sheep's mentality, the stats back them to score points and with a reduced pool of forwards due to WC uncertainties it's a risk based approach. Who else offers nailed starts for GW1&2. Personally, I've opted for Arnie & Tosun (still monitoring), but I agree in principle that 2x £7mil forwards are better for short term planning.

Of course they will get some points, as they did as midfielders. My point is that people are blinded by their new positions in fpl and the fact that good forwards are pricey. It is a reason for that. I think there is more value in defenders with a price tag around 5.5-6.5 and also frees up cash that can be used in midfield. Maybe I’m wrong, but it is still West Ham and Crystal Palace (if it is players from big six, for instance Llorente, it’s another story) and I would personally rather have some “bigger” defenders and midfielders rather than these budget forwards. Go big with your forwards or go home (to cheapies)

Haha, can’t wait to start with the season. So funny to se all these predictions that will be failure after first game. My self included 🙂

I'm hopeful that Shaw will see at least 3 GWs due to the lack of competition, unlike TAA he'll be competing against a fit again Clyne.

      - Baines is getting older.
      - Baines was not playing as a winger. (Wing-back at the very most.)
      - Not even sure if he's 100% on pens'
      - Everton defense has been awful in pre-season.
      - Everton have supposedly bought Digne (plays LB).
